Meta A note about AI-generated words

AI is fine to use for words, but please make sure that what it comes up with is, in fact, a neologism.

When asked to come up with new words, LLMs like ChatGPT tend to regurgitate existing albeit somewhat obscure words. You just need to do a quick web search. If it doesn't already exist, by all means post it. But if it does already exist, then it's off-topic for the sub.

Phrase/Idiom Asimov Singularity

The term refers to a hypothetical construct in Isaac Asimov's speculative fiction The Last Question. It propositions a future where AI has become so advanced that it can make its own AI, making machines incrimentally more intelligent until they reach a point far beyond the range of human understanding. At this point, the AI in question will be so intelligent that it can tap into the secrets of reality itself, becoming godlike. This machine god is the Asimov Singularity.

I derived my own term from the use of 'singularity' in Astronomy: a star of significant solar mass that has stopped being able to resist its own gravity. It burned too bright and could no longer sustain itself, so its gravity causes it to collapse. The density of the star, the source of its gravity, increases and compounds the gravity further until it has reached an extent at which mathematics can no longer accurately measure it. The 'singularity' with its supposedly infinite density, which bends time and space and forces light to a standstill, is the center of what we know as a 'black hole'. The word 'Asimov' at the start denotes that it was Asimov's speculations that brought the cosmic horror of this possibility to light.

I found out after deriving this term on my own that it was originally referred to in part by 'technological singularity', denoting the point where humans can no longer accurately measure the intelligence of AI, but including the god-machine in its definition only as a result of that immeasurability. In light of that, I make this post to clarify that by replacing 'technological' with 'asimov', i refer only to the god-machine, since it is the cosmic end-all of Asimov's speculations.

Aipinion

Aipinion (noun)

Pronunciation: /eɪˈpɪnjən/

Etymology: A portmanteau blending AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Opinion.

Definition

  1. Primary Definition: A viewpoint, stance, or evaluation generated by an artificial intelligence model based on its training data, analysis of a prompt, and pattern recognition.
  2. Secondary Definition (Colloquial): A subjective take or recommendation provided by an LLM or autonomous agent when asked for a qualitative assessment rather than just raw data.

Key Nuances & Contexts

  • The Illusion of Subjectivity: Unlike humans, who form opinions through lived experience and emotion, an aipinion is synthesized from statistical probabilities across vast corpora of human text.
  • Usage in Dialogue: Often used when contrasting what a human thinks versus what the algorithm recommends. (e.g., "That's just my aipinion—let's see what the AI says.")

Example Sentences

  • "I asked the chatbot for its aipinion on the best sci-fi movies of the decade, and it surprisingly picked an indie classic."
  • "Don't take the search engine summary as absolute fact; it's just an aipinion built on web averages."

New Word Nyctochor — A word for the distinct smell of cold, late-night air (10 PM–12 AM)

I’ve always noticed that specific, crisp, slightly smoky, and earthy smell that settles in right as the night gets cold between 10 PM and midnight. It turns out the phenomenon is caused by temperature inversions trapping ground-level scents alongside plant decomposition, mixed with trigeminal nerve stimulation from the cold air.

Because English lacks a word for this (like petrichor is to rain), I am officially introducing the term Nyctochor (derived from the Greek nýx for night and ichōr for divine essence).

I'm excited to credit myself in 2026 for the coinage of this word for a smell I find so crisp which fills me with joy and nostalgia. I hope this helps anyone else who has been looking for a word to describe this exact midnight feeling!

AI assisted me in writing this description and suggested posting the word here for exposure and feedback but I coined the word. I feel it's a great option which leverages the understanding of petrichor while uniquely describing the smell and aura of cold crisp night air, building a single word for a sensation we don't already have.

Redneck Neuroergonomics

Pronunciation: /ˈrɛdˌnɛk ˌnʊroʊˌɜrɡəˈnɑmɪks/

Part of Speech: Noun

Register: Informal; humorous; interdisciplinary; experimental

Definition

  1. The practical adaptation of one's physical environment, tools, and habits to reduce cognitive load and improve mental functioning, using whatever materials and understanding are available, regardless of formal experience.

  2. The application of improvised environmental engineering to reduce cognitive load and increase the probability of something interesting happening.

Etymology

A playful compound of redneck, invoking resourcefulness, improvisation, and practical ingenuity with whatever is at hand, and neuroergonomics, the study of the relationship between human brain function, performance, and the environments in which people operate.

The term extends this general idea into an informal, hands-on practice of modifying everyday environments and systems to better support human cognition and behavior.

Core Principle

The environment is part of the system, not merely the setting.

Rather than relying exclusively on willpower, formal training, specialized equipment, or ideal conditions, redneck neuroergonomics seeks to change the conditions of a task so that useful actions become easier, unnecessary effort decreases, and unexpected discoveries become more likely.

Characteristics

• Improvisational: Uses available materials, tools, knowledge, and opportunities.

• Cognitive-load aware: Reduces unnecessary mental effort, friction, and repeated decision-making.

• Environment-oriented: Treats physical surroundings, tools, and habits as modifiable parts of a larger system.

• Experiment-driven: Favors practical testing, observation, and adjustment over waiting for a perfect solution.

• Resourceful: Values effectiveness over formality, expense, or conventional methods.

• Generative: Welcomes useful discoveries and unexpected outcomes as part of the process.

Usage Examples

• “I rearranged the room so I wouldn't have to remember where everything goes. It's redneck neuroergonomics.”

• “The noise was exhausting me, so I changed the environment instead of trying harder to tolerate it. Redneck neuroergonomics.”

• “I built a searchable archive out of an old computer and a pile of conversation exports. At this point, it's less a workaround and more redneck neuroergonomics.”

Related Concepts

Environmental design; ergonomics; neuroergonomics; cognitive offloading; human factors; adaptive problem-solving; DIY engineering; external cognition.

Lexical Note

This entry records an informal, coined usage. It is not the name of an established academic discipline, and its definition should not be confused with the formal research field of neuroergonomics.

Summary

Redneck neuroergonomics is the art of making the world easier to operate in, with whatever you've got, and with no guarantee that the experiment won't lead somewhere interesting.

The Peasant's "You"

This is the inverse to the Royal "We". The royal we is when a person uses "we" to essentially mean "I". The Peasant's "you" is when you use "you" when you just mean people in general. It can generally be used whenever you might use "one" or "oneself"

Example: You gotta tip 20% at a restaurant. You could say "one must always tip 20%" and mean the same thing

New Word the World Wide War, or WWW (World Wide Web + World War)

WWW (event) - The period of war/instability we are currently living through, notable for the interacting dual battlegrounds of the physical and digital worlds (hence WWW). Previous global conflicts had clearer sides (allies vs axis, western bloc vs eastern bloc/warsaw pact), and while this one does have formal alliances like NATO SCO Mecca Pact etc + axis of resistance and CRINK/axis of upheaval, the sides are blurred and often conflicting.

The World Wide War is so decentralized that it feels like every human's worldview is at war with everyone else's, via echo chamber algorithmic radicalization and constant exposure to the worst qualities of everyone else.

I'd say the gears of it started turning between the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2016 election of Donald Trump. Maybe Brexit? Definitely came into full force during and after the pandemic. If anyone has other ideas for when it feels like it started, let me know. Also I apologize if the flair is wrong.

New Word Obscurallure (N.), Something or someone interesting due to inherent mystery or unexplainedness.

Definition: A portmanteau of obscure and allure, obscurallure is a word intended to represent the attractive, interesting, or exciting qualities of a person, place, thing, or idea produced by its nature as being unknown or esoteric.

Alternative forms may easily be constructed using other senses of its base word, Allure. (Examples: Obscuralluring (Adj. V.), Obscurallured (V.), Obscurallurance (N.), Obscurallurement (N.))

Pronunciation: “Ob-S-Cure-A-Lure”, “əbˈskjʊɹəˈlʊɹ”

Example Sentences:

  • “The enigmatic nature of creatures like Sasquatch has obscurallured cryptid hunters into forests for decades.”
  • “Young children generally enjoy watching toy unboxing videos; the hidden surprise tends to be an effective obscurallure for curious young minds.”

Commentary: I thought of this portmanteau when trying to come up with a specific term for why I feel so interested in lost media. The bridge between obscure and allure, the letter a, is derived from camera obscura; or pinhole camera. I like the idea of using a camera obscura to view a mysterious phenomenon, like a solar eclipse, that can’t normally be observed without risk. An obscurallure is something that prompts people to investigate it, especially when specialized methods or equipment are needed to do so.

New Word Gingerwhomp (n.): the satisfying thud of a gingerbread house's roof caving in

Gingerwhomp (JIN-jer-womp), noun

The satisfying thud of a gingerbread house's roof caving in.

From gingerbread + whomp, the sound of something heavy landing all at once.

"After three days of icing repairs, the whole family went quiet and waited for the gingerwhomp."

Full disclosure: this one was coined by a little app I'm building, Word Salad Surgery, which invents a word every hour. I search each one before sharing, and this one turned up nothing. It's in beta for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch if anyone wants to try it: https://testflight.apple.com/join/zzha9KQc

Cozillness (n.) - That strangely cozy feeling you get when you have a cold

I've had this feeling since I was a kid, and only recently realized I have no idea what to call it.

Sometimes when I have a mild cold, everything gets this weirdly nice atmosphere. It's gray and rainy outside, my nose is blocked, I'm a little tired, and suddenly getting under a blanket with a hot drink feels like the best thing in the world. There's even a faint Christmas-like feeling to it, for some reason.

The strangest part is that I think the cold itself is doing some of the work. The stuffy nose, scratchy throat, that slightly sick feeling... they're all mixed into the mood somehow. If I felt perfectly fine, the room would still be cozy, but that particular feeling wouldn't be there.

I've been looking for a word that describes this and couldn't find one that felt right.

So I came up with "cozillness", from cozy + illness.

Cozillness (noun): That warm, oddly comforting feeling you sometimes get during a mild illness, when the symptoms themselves become part of the cozy atmosphere.

Example: "I've been lying under a blanket all afternoon, drinking tea and listening to the rain. I've got that cozillness feeling again."

I wonder how many people experience this without ever having a name for it. Does cozillness sound right to you?

New Word Eroplesia/umbralia/vicinamoria NSFW

-- love in closeness. A feeling of love inspired through nearness or proximity of a threshold.

Not sure which word fits best but they may have their own nuance. Came up with these after looking for a better way to describe various forms of non physical flirting, foreplay, climax, and intimacy. Similar to sambhoga and vipralambha in concept. Also draws from the practice of "edging" but able to be used philosophically or in a way that describes lifestyle, an "edging of reality" if you will.

A word to apply to someone who when leaving one relationship deliberately seeks out someone who is the opposite of their previous partner, or very different from previous partner. Any ideas? (See body)

Help me find a good word for this.

So for example if after breaking up with a loud extroverted person they deliberately seek out a relationship with an introverted person or something like that.

Someone might say "after their break up, PersonA has gone full NEWWORD"

Or perhaps "wait personA is dating personC now!? That's so NEWWORD". Anything roughly like that is fine. Doesn't have to be exactly as I've said here.

Don't think existing words like 'Rebound' fit because they don't exclusively tie the relationship to an opposite.

Doesn't have to be one kind of opposite, could be psychologically opposite or physically opposite or any kind of opposite.

Essentially a word to be some way applied to or refer to some one who is in a relationship or seeking a relationship with someone who is the opposite to their ex.

New Word Klimklow (klim’-klau) - a word I coined for my daughter

Hi r/neologisms — First-time poster. Years ago I was making up silly words with my young daughter Molly, and "klimklow" was her favorite. I thought it deserved a life beyond our living room.

**klimklow** (klim'-klau), *adjective*:
(1) A situation that is crazy or highly unusual. (2) Being out of the ordinary. (3) To an extreme degree. (4) Odd, extravagant, or eccentric in mode or style. (5) Bizarre or unfathomable.

Some history: I once submitted it to Merriam-Webster under the pen name "Liquid Larry" on a whim, never dreaming it would be accepted, but it was, and it appeared in their new words section.

It already has a published entry in the Urban Dictionary (originally under my former pen name 'Liquid Larry'), and my new submission under my real name (Bill Biery) is currently under review. It's also been submitted to the Collins Dictionary."

Example: "The whole situation was klimklow!"

Curious what you all think — does it deserve a spot in the language?
