I'm 18, trying to build a web design business selling to small businesses in the US. I've spent months cold calling, and I genuinely don't know what I'm doing wrong anymore.
I've built my own professional agency website, portfolio, Facebook and X profiles to look as legitimate as possible. I can build good websites, and I've worked with paying clients before, but my only client just left, and I haven't managed to turn cold calling into consistent sales.
Here's where I'm struggling:
- Niche: I've jumped between excavation, demolition, fencing, PPF/wrap shops, and other contractors. How do I know if a niche is bad or if my sales approach just sucks? Which niche would you choose with practically $0 to invest?
- Cold calls: I keep changing my scripts and openers. Is there an opener you've personally used that actually works for selling websites?
- Demo links: I offer to build a website draft, text the owner the link, and they either never open it or never respond. Should I send the link or book a meeting on the call? What follow-up process has actually worked for you?
- Pricing: Should I charge $500 upfront + $97/month, $1,500 upfront + $97/month, or a small upfront fee with higher monthly payments? What have you actually sold websites for?
- Testimonials: Everyone says to build case studies and collect testimonials first. How am I supposed to do that without clients or money? And what's the point if prospects disappear before I can even show them my portfolio?
- What to sell: Should I stick with websites or sell another service that's easier to close through cold outreach and requires almost no investment?
- Are there any ways to get clients organically without cold calling or making YouTube videos?
I'm operating on practically $0, so paid ads aren't an option. Are there any underrated platforms, communities, groups, or outreach methods where you've personally managed to find business owners who were actually willing to pay for websites? I'd especially appreciate methods that work for someone starting with no audience, reputation, or existing network.
I'm not looking for motivation or generic advice like "keep grinding" or "provide value." I've already made roughly 1,000 calls. I need to identify what's broken before wasting another few months.
If you've actually sold websites or built a service business from zero, please tell me what has worked for you personally. Specific niches, prices, scripts, and follow-up methods would help far more than theories.
I'm genuinely lost on what to fix first.
