So is there a point where walking like this (just to clarify it's km/h), may start hurting me. I'm not in any way new to walking, for example during my conscription we marched around 70km with 30kg of gear in 24ish hours. Any help would be nice, as long as this is not flagged as a medical question.

Been try to walk to burn some calories as of late. Every time I do I get hot spots on the ball of my feet regardless of what shoes I have on. Makes it hard to walk much over a mile. Do you think my shoes are to big or miss sized. Anyone got any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I don't know if this has to do with aging, obesity or seditary lifestyle- or all three. But I went on 1 hour walk on my neighborhood trail (all flat, all concrete) - my step counter said it was almost 3 miles. And somehow got injured.
I have the sharpest pain in my calf, knee & hip ( only on 1 side - the left) ever since ( & that was 4 weeks ago). No swelling or hot spots - just internal throbbing and pain ( both at rest & with movement). Sharp pain that almost knocks me down if I move leg wrong.
Ive been to the doctor, got an ultrasound & circulation tests and everything is normal ( it rules out blood clots & circulation issues). But I am severely limping/draging the left leg ( thank goodness I can drive because my right is fine) and even walking around my house is painful.
I've been doing mobility stretches 2x a day since & wearing compression socks - it does help but it doesn't take away all the pain. So I've come to realize at age 49, I will have to make sure Im doing daily stretches- especially before & after walking or exercise.
I did my stretches today & feel noticeable better - Im probably at 80% which is the closest I have been to normal. Im seeing a chiropractor for the 1st time next week -- wish me luck! Never in a million years would I think an injury this painful came about simply from walking! Lesson learned the hard way.
Im now a firm believer of stretches!

When y’all go walking do you just step out and wander aimlessly somewhere, or do you plan your route or try to hit a goal such as step count or length. Also what motivates you long term cause I’m missing that lol 😭 I get going for a week and then my motivation just drops 🙃

So I'm a 5'4 280 pound female and my steps range from 1k on my worst days to 4k on my best. I do not move. I love bedrotting. I have a stationary bike that I pedal on for 30 minutes on my days off from work and even then my job is pretty sedentary. I've also recently bought a walking pad that I'm waiting to arrive.
I'm going to be going on a trip in April with my Uncle and he loves walking/hiking. This has inspired me to create the 20k goal, which is obviously a very large number compared to what I normally walk. I want to keep up with him and just generally work on my health/endurance.
I figured I would give myself a big and realistic gap of time to work on this as it's a few months away, but I'm not sure how I should schedule it out. How long does it typically take you to walk this many steps if you're going to be doing it at home on a walking pad?
tldr: If you were going to build up to walking 20k steps when you avg under 5k, how would you schedule it?

Up until a little over 2 hrs ago I was treating walking like something a bit austere...
Like I felt like I should do it right.
Am I appreciating my surroundings enough? Am I maximizing my time by listening to a podcast or audiobook (non fiction ofc) ...
So I never felt motivated to do it. I was just...doing it begrudgingly and never seemed to walk more than half an hour. And told myself "well, you're just starting out. Some walking is better than none"
Tonight I caught up on the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and Meg Thee Stallion reminded me I love her music and had an old Playlist on my phone with her, Todrick Hall, RuPaul, Gaga, Britney, Missy Elliot, 2ne1, etc and I thought...lemmie put my headphones on and walk on my walking pad and crank the volume up and pretend I'm on the runway.
Several hours later and only done because my feet hurt I realize now that my ADHD ass should have been following the dopamine this whole time!!!!
So if anyone needs me I'll be the middle aged woman on the walking pad in her office dance-walking and sashaying and pretending I can twerk (i cannot) and strutting and singing loudly (I threw some Muse in there at the end so I could pretend I was leading a very fierce political revolution) while my cats look at me like I've lost my mind, k thanks.

Most walking advice is about how much or how fast. I went digging into when, and the walk after a meal turns out to be one of the better-studied answers.
The trial that started it
In 2016, researchers (Reynolds et al., Diabetologia) gave 41 adults with type 2 diabetes (average age 60) two kinds of advice, two weeks each:
Both meet standard activity guidelines. Glucose was tracked with continuous monitors.
The rise in blood sugar over the 3 hours after meals was about 12% smaller with after-meal walking. After the evening meal it was about 22% smaller.
Same advised amount of walking. Different timing.
The wider picture
What it doesn’t show
The practical version
~10 minutes, easy pace, soon after your biggest meal. Around the block is fine.
I’m curious: do you already take a walk after eating? Does it feel like it helps with anything, or is it just a nice habit?

I started walking regularly for exercise this past spring (mostly big parks/pavement/hiking) and have gotten into a routine of walking around 6–8 miles most days. I’ve really come to enjoy it and would love to keep going outdoors for as much of the winter as possible.
I’m in NJ and now that temperatures are already dropping at night/early sunset i need some assistance with better walking clothing for the cold (I do get warm after a couple laps and end up taking off layers-usually my old navy leggings, long sleeve thin shirt and a fleece)
I have a dog, so I’m used to going outside in colder weather, but taking her out for a short walk is obviously very different from being outside walking several miles.
For those of you who walk longer distances through the fall and winter, what clothing or gear do you swear by? Especially looking for recommendations for jackets, leggings/pants, base layers, socks, etc. I’m not looking to spend a fortune, just want to be comfortable enough to keep up with my walks as temperatures drop.
Also bonus to add- winter walking shoes? I had the Hoka Clifton 11 and brooks both shredded at this point, would love recs.
Any advice is appreciated!

Second time hitting 100 miles, and much harder this round. In 2020 I flew through it in the flat desert. Now I live in hilly Seattle, where every walk ends with a 400ft climb home, on top of whatever hills the route adds. After 10-15 miles, it's brutal.

With Daylight Savings Time ending next weekend. It’s probably going to be too dark for my Morning walks, so I’m going to lose an easy 5 miles in the morning. Then eventually it’ll be too cold for me outside altogether. I’m going to try and enjoy these last few weeks and figure out how to stay active until the weather breaks. Walking has helped me drop weight and lower my blood pressure. I’m glad I stuck with it.

While I was unable to walk outside owing to some personal situation on my end. I started on spot marching, and finally today I reached to 15K steps!
For context, my average steps were 9-10K usually.

I used to love walking when I was a kid and kept it up until 10 years ago. I got depressed, gained weight but now I'm back to walking almost daily. I use walking as a coping mechanism and mood regulation and I'm glad to have it back
