Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Strike Refund

If I've had 4 classes cancelled and not rescheduled by strikes over the last strike and this coming Thursday why should I have to pay for them? No other business gets to just not provide a service but still bill you like it did. The uni should provide a fractional refund to students matching the proportion of classes that they don't deliver.

Advice on Course transfer into Bachelor of Commerce

I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science. My Semester 1 average WAM sat around 67.7, and this Semester 2 I have not been doing well (bad mid sem exams) and I realistically think I will be pulling a similar average WAM. I was advised that if I want to transfer into the Bachelor of Commerce I would need an average 75+ WAM, which I don't think I will reach, so I'm not sure what to do in this case. I'm wondering if I should transfer into the Bachelor of Arts and reset my WAM to try to transfer into the Bachelor of Commerce later, or stay in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science this semester and try to transfer after completing Year 2 Semester 1. The problem is that I have calculated that if I average a 65 WAM for this whole year, it means that in Year 2 Semester 1 I would need to average a 90 WAM to obtain a 75 average, which seems impossible. I'm just so lost and need some advice on what to do next.

Lost my Graduation Testamur Folder, any way to get another one?

Hi I just graduated today, and I kind of misplaced my folder… not a huge deal obviously, luckily it was not the testamur or transcript, but just wondering if anyone knows who to contact or talk to about a replacement? Thanks!

What is the worst degree to do at USYD?

Which degrees have the worst teaching, disorganised units, useless lecturers, unnecessarily difficult assessments, or just a generally bad uni experience?

Not talking about job prospects or salaries, just the actual experience of studying the degree at USYD. Keen to hear from current students and grads 💀

Honours supervision query

Hi, I'm from the school of CS and have questions about honours. how do you approach supervisors? Do you take your own topic or bank on them to give you one? If you do take your own topic -- how do you do that? Read papers before approaching them?

Computer engineering specialisation

Hi,

If you complete the computer engineering specialisation within BEng(Hons)(software) degree are you qualified for computer engineering roles and is it somewhat equivalent to studying a bEng(Hons)(computer). I understand that you won’t have the same depth of knowledge as someone in electrical or comp engineering by itself but does it matter too much for hardware focused roles specifically? Any response is appreciated. Thank you!

Kensington Off-Campus Accommodation

Hello, I am a senior in highschool, enrolling at Usyd from 2027 Semester 1. I was wondering about Kensington Off-Campus accomodation, as it seems relatively far from campus. Are the shuttle buses always available or is it full almost all the time? Also, is there more students from UNSW than from usyd?
Any replies about the accomodation, tips for freshmen, or information is appreciated. Thank you!

Looking for Potential Flatmates/Housemates 2027

Hi, I'm Lucas (18), and I'm looking for a flatmate for 2027 since I didn't get an offer for the USYD-managed accommodation😭. I'm a domestic student moving back to Sydney after living in Singapore for the last few years. Some of my hobbies are cooking, reading, restaurant & bar hopping, travelling, sailing, and the gym + much more. I'm going to study commerce, and I'm looking for flatmates/housemates to rent near campus neighbourhoods. My budget is anywhere from AUD 400 pw to AUD 600 pw. I'm pretty hygienic, and I'm looking for like-minded individuals. Dm me if interested! My Insta is lucaswang375 - you can also reach me there

Anyone at USYD interested in conlanging (creating your own languages)?

Hi everyone!

I'm curious if there are any conlangers or people interested in constructed languages here at USYD.

I've recently started exploring the idea of creating my own language, but I'm still very much a beginner. I'm particularly interested in how languages are designed, including grammar, semantics, and the ideas behind languages like Ithkuil, Lojban, and Esperanto.

I'd love to meet others who share this interest, especially anyone with experience in conlanging who might be willing to share some advice.

Would anyone be interested in chatting about conlangs or perhaps having a casual meetup on campus sometime?

You don't need to have created a language yourself — anyone who's curious about language creation is welcome! Just feel free to text me!

Chance of getting the International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship? Be brutally honest lol

Hey everyone,

I’m looking into applying to USYD and really want to shoot my shot for the Sydney International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship (the 100% tuition full-ride).

Just wanted to get a realistic vibe check on my chances because I know it's insanely competitive.

My profile:

Academics: Got 625/625 points on the Irish Leaving Cert (the absolute max, equivalent to 4 As in the UK).

Context: I moved from Belgium to Ireland at 17 and had to do the entire two-year senior cycle (5th and 6th year) into just one single year instead of two.

ECs / Background: Back in Belgium I did Latin & Ancient Greek. I also used to do theater, played soccer, and coached/refereed U12 youth teams. Currently just running, hitting the gym, and working a part-time supermarket job.

Honestly, idk if USYD cares about ECs and context at all for this specific merit scholarship, or if it's purely based on grades from high school and ATAR numbers.

Has anyone actually won this full tuition scholarship before? What are my actual chances? Pls be realistic, thanks!
