Students from North Carolina A&T can be seen marching back to their HBCU after voting on the first day of early voting in the state. The Guilford County Board of Elections voted to remove the school’s on-campus polling site. (video via Todd Simmons)

i'm super surprised since i submitted my application three days ago, but i checked the portal today and i am officially admitted! it might be because i'm auto-admit but idrk how it works lolll. i'm very happy since their journalism program is great and the campus is close to home. i'm curious if any current journalism majors have any insight to what the program is like! :)

Tips for new students?

• Upvotes

Hello! I was accepted to UNT a little less than a month ago (their admissions move QUICK), and I was trying to compile a list of things I'd need for college come next year. Do y'all have any tips as to what to expect or things I should look into purchasing/bringing from home? I got accepted for Health Informatics and would like to live on campus (probably a dorm) my first year, if that changes anything. Thanks! :)

About scholarship

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I recently transferred to UNT, and this is my first semester here. I received the UNT Transfer Excellence Scholarship, which also gives me in-state tuition.

I’m worried that my GPA might fall below 3.00 this semester (maybe around 2.5–2.75).

I called UNT Financial Aid yesterday and explained my situation multiple times. The representative told me that since my scholarship was awarded for the entire academic year, I should be fine as long as I bring my cumulative GPA back to 3.00 or above by the end of spring.

However, I also emailed the scholarship office, and they replied that eligibility is evaluated semester by semester, which confused me.

Has anyone actually been in this situation? Did you lose your scholarship or in-state tuition waiver immediately after fall, or were you allowed to improve your GPA during spring?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced this, especially Transfer Excellence Scholarship recipients. Thank you!

I genuinely need some advice because I don’t know what to do anymore.

For context, last spring was my first semester at UNT. I met this guy in one of my classes, and things were completely fine in the beginning. We would talk in class, hang out, and go on walks occasionally. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first.
But after a while, he started doing things that made me increasingly uncomfortable. He would take my personal belongings, like my AirPods, hairbrush, and lip tints, just to mess with me or get my attention. When I confronted him about it, he brushed it off, saying it was all in good fun.
It didn’t stop there. He started crossing some serious boundaries. He would intentionally prevent me from going to class or work on time, snatch my belongings, and threaten not to return them unless I did what he wanted. He would force conversations on me, grab my wrists, and physically prevent me from leaving because he wanted to get his point across since I started ignoring him for the things he did.
Things got so bad that he actually showed up at my on-campus job and started grabbing my belongings AGAIN just to force me to talk to him. I started feeling genuinely unsafe walking around campus because I was constantly worried about having to deal with him again.

Eventually, things escalated to the point where I had to call the police.
One time, he suggested that we walk around campus, and, against my better judgment, I agreed. Instead, he took me to a bar at the Square. I felt so unsafe that I had to arrange a ride to get away. He then started yelling and causing a scene on the street, and I ended up having to call 911.
After that incident, I completely cut off contact with him.
But even now, I don’t feel like I can fully move on from what happened.
I’m constantly scared that I’ll run into him somewhere on campus. Whenever I hear someone walking behind me, I freeze up. I feel anxious walking around alone because I’m always on edge, wondering whether I’ll have to face him again.
What makes things worse is that I feel like he’s still trying to contact me. He calls me using his friends’ phone numbers, and every time, I hang up and block the number. Today was particularly unsettling because I genuinely felt like he might have been standing near the entrance to my classroom. I don’t know for sure if it was him, but the possibility alone was enough to scare me.
I’m exhausted from feeling this way. I came to UNT to study, build a future for myself, and enjoy my college experience. I don’t want to spend my days feeling scared of someone who should no longer have any place in my life.

Should I seek therapy to help me deal with the anxiety and fear this has caused me? Should I go to the UNT Police Department and report the continued unwanted contact and everything that happened, even though I already called 911 that night? Do you think they would take this seriously, or would they dismiss it because I don’t have enough evidence?
I just want to feel safe walking around my own campus again. I don’t want to keep looking over my shoulder, freezing whenever I hear footsteps behind me, or living with the fear that I might run into him.
I know I made mistakes by giving him so many chances, but I also know that I never deserved to be treated this way.

Tuition Rebate Question

The UNT site says “Tuition rebates shall be reduced by the amount of any outstanding student loan, including an emergency loan, owed to or guaranteed by this state” however by the wording it’s hard to tell if they mean federal loans as well, or just state loans. If I don’t owe any state loans will I get the 1,000 rebate itself or will it go to my federal loans?

What’s with the TAMS kids // rant

I’m a junior transfer in STEM, and my situation is unique in that I already hold an AS in Pre-Nursing, but since I am pursuing pre-med I need some freshman prereqs that nurses don’t need, such as biology and gen chem.

Not sure about bio because I don’t really talk to many people there but in my chemistry class there are a million of these TAMS kids. I have never ever seen behavior like theirs either. They’re extremely cocky, self-important and rather arrogant, and then they just use a laptop to type notes. If you know anything about neurological you’d know typing notes doesn’t help anything.

I overheard a couple of them saying that professors should reserve the front rows for them. I use the front row desks because I use a binder to take notes in and it takes up space, rather than the tiny fold-out desks. These kids will literally shove their way past the outbound class and incoming class alike to get these front rows, it’s insanity.

Maybe it’s just because I’m 21 or something and they’re literal children but shut it down. Shut it all down, 17 year olds shouldn’t be on a college campus, point blank.

EDIT: This post seems to have found TAMS kids and possibly parents of TAMS kids. First of all, I’d like to say that because of my background of rigorous classes at my other college I do not coddle anyone. I expect people who want to work with me to be able to match me and that’s just true of any job anywhere. If they can’t do that then that’s their fault. Second of all, I’m not impressed because mommy and daddy labeled them as prodigies when they were little and now they’re here. We’re all here. I’m not going to sit around and excuse their behavior or whatever else just because they tested into college early. Hope this clears everything up.

Be careful parking at Gateway at Denton!

My car was towed by On The Road Again even though I parked in what appeared to be a Visitor space. When I arrived to pick up my car, the staff initially told me it was towed because I parked outside the Visitor area. After I explained that I was parked in the Visitor area and argued with them, they changed their explanation and said it was because I hadn’t registered my car. One employee even admitted they had the wrong information about where I parked.

They showed me a photo of my car that appeared to be cropped so the word “Visitor” was not visible. When I asked to take a picture of the photo myself, they refused and said it was against company policy. This made the situation feel very suspicious and frustrating.
The staff were extremely rude and unprofessional. One male employee told me to “fucking pay and leave" and said I wouldn’t get my car back unless I paid. He also threatened to call the police. When I tried to leave, they closed the gate and blocked my way out.

The employees I dealt with included a white American woman with blonde hair, a tall white American man medium hair, a white girl has black hair with a red highlight, and a Mexican employee who was somewhat heavyset and had long eyelashes. None of them showed a professional or respectful attitude toward me.

I’m sharing this experience so Gateway residents and visitors know to be careful

I helped build Mean Eats — free UNT dining menus and meal planning for iPhone

I helped build Mean Eats, a free iPhone app for UNT dining-hall menus, dish search, favorites and a plate builder with estimated calories/macros. Guest browsing is available (iOS 17+).

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mean-eats/id6778164060

Try it out; I’d love feedback on finding dishes or building a plate.

Independent student project, not endorsed by UNT. Menus can change; nutrition values are estimates.

Paid research study — $50 for a 1-hour virtual focus group (business & tech students)

Hi UNT — I’m a researcher at Veris Insights, a firm that studies how students think about employers. We’ve worked with companies like Meta, Goldman Sachs, and Uber on their recruiting.

We’re running virtual focus groups about how students perceive AT&T as an employer, and we’re trying to get a UNT session together before the study wraps up at the end of the month. We’ve already done sessions at Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, UT Austin, UT Dallas, Rutgers, and Brown.

Details:
•One hour, on Zoom, small group (4–6 students)
•$50, sent as an electronic gift card within 24 hours of the session
•Open to current business and tech/engineering/CS students, any year
•No prep — it’s just a conversation about your honest impressions. There are no right answers and we’re not selling anything.

Times available (CT): Wed 10/21 12pm, Fri 10/23 11am, Mon 10/26 5pm, Tue 10/27 6pm

Sign up: https://survey.verisinsights.com/AT&T_FocusGroups

Happy to answer questions in the comments — and if you’ve got a classmate who’d want in, send it their way.

I heard a rumor that UNT is trying to pre-enroll freshmen in some of their classes before freshmen registration? Anyone else heard this?

I heard they did it for orientation, but I heard they're trying to do it again for the same students in the Spring?? Some classes are even hidden while this happens. How is this fair to juniors and sophomores that might also need those classes??

I heard this from an acquaintance who works with advisors
