Question Recommendations for Voxel Library?

Thumbnail youtu.be
2 Upvotes

Does anyone know of a good voxel library? I don't necessarily need to use the library directly but getting a good idea of how it works would be good. Ideally a GitHub repo

I want to change how the sim in the video is rendered. Right now it's a 2D plane with Nanite displacement being used to drive hight. This was always just for the sake of preview but I want to move to full 3D. The voxels would be spans if that matters since the sim is heightfield based.

Alternatives would also be appreciated, just as long as it's reasonably fast, right now I just need it to work for prototyping purposes.

I'm using 5.8 with heavy C++ focused development.

Last Week in Unreal: 1,149 commits on ue6-main; 126 on ue5-main | VS2022 compiler is out, and a Mac crash fix for 5.8.2

The VS2022 compiler is no longer supported on ue6-main, there's a fix for what Epic calls the "top Mac crash in 5.8.2," and a couple of shader and movie-staging fixes worth cherry-picking if you're still on 5.8.

The public 5.8 branch had zero commits last week. So 5.8.4 is still an untagged candidate, and nothing new landed there this week.

On ue5-main:

  • Mac editor exit crash: A fix for the "top Mac crash in 5.8.2." Probably the first one I'd look at if you're shipping editor builds on Mac.
  • Shader compilation hang and assert: Fixed an issue that shows up when async shader compilation is disabled. Relevant if your build machines or commandlets run with it off.
  • Movie staging for Zen and file-server runs: Two changes here. Take them together rather than cherry-picking just one.

On ue6-main:

  • VS2022 compiler support is gone: Minimum MSVC is now 14.50.35723. Project file settings no longer select the compiler either, so check your toolchain setup before syncing.
  • Linux unresolved symbols now fail at link time: Modules have to explicitly opt out if they don't want this behavior. Worth checking if you have modules that currently rely on unresolved symbols slipping through.
  • Ray tracing requires inline support: A compatibility change to keep in mind if you're working across different hardware or renderer configurations.
  • Lumen indirect rays changed what they hit: If you're tracking lighting differences after syncing, this is one of the changes I'd investigate.

Announcement CD-R Racing - Official Announcement Trailer

Hello. A couple of buddies and I are working on this racing game using Unreal. We're trying to make it look like a mix of a retro racer (like NFS, Ridge Racer) and how you remember them in your head (if that makes any sense?). There is also a big emphasis on DnB music. I would love it if you have some time to check it out!

Show Off Steel Dragons

This is a plug and a appreciation post in one. Back in 2004 unreal engine shipped with unreal tournament 2004 completely for free and my little kid brain with a bad internet connection spent days of my life modding characters and guns all black cause I was tryna be goth. Today, 22 years later, after several different jobs a few businesses and a bunch of little ideas I had, I can say I am days away from releasing a video game. I'm trying not to be emotional about it but I feel like how parents must feel when their kids finally graduate college or something. For all the hate unreal gets online about optimizations and all that bs I could care less cause they gave me something to mess around with for free when nothing is free anymore. If the people at epic ever read these forums, shout out to everything you guys do for people like me, shoutout to the blueprint team, PCG Team, Animation Group, everyone that makes it easier for people like me to express themselves. Game is called Steel Dragons, I don't have a release date yet but its going to be on meta quest 2 and 3 standalone with connected steam support coming as soon as I can get a frame.

Hey everyone - I'm from the team at thatgamecompany (Journey, Sky: Children of the Light) organising thatgamejam#02. Wanted to share it with the community here for anyone looking for their next jam.

Our first global jam had ~250 entries inspired by a single image. This time, the theme will be a piece of music, revealed on October 24. The challenge is to turn what you hear and feel into gameplay.

Any genre is welcome. It doesn't have to be a music or rhythm game, and you don't need to include the music track in your game.

  • When: October 24 - November 7, 2026 (PT)
  • Who: Students, hobbyists and professionals, solo or teams of up to five
  • Prizes: USD 10k across five categories
  • Judging: Entries reviewed by the thatgamecompany team, with finalists judged by our Founder and Creative Director Jenova Chen

Full jam details & registration: https://itch.io/jam/thatgamejam02

If you're looking for a team member, feel free to join our discord group (invite link available on jam site) where we have a channel there for open teams. Happy to answer questions here too :)

From Blender to UE5 - what are the requirements for a 3D model to be in a game?

Hi! I'm a Blender beginner and alongside my husband we are trying to make a game!.

He is handling the whole UE5 thing (he is also a beginner) and I am an artist, wanting to make characters and assets for our little project, but I am unsure on where to begin learning how to do blender for this specific goal.

If you guys have any tips or relevant videos/guides I could learn from, that would be great!. Most of the videos available are from like 2 years ago and the softwares have changed so much I am unsure if it's still something that would work nowadays.

Thanks for reading!

Screen recording directly in Unreal?

I was trying to find a good option for recording my in engine content and came across offworld and a relatively new plugin called REC on fab. I usually just use OBS but that can be hit or miss in terms of hitting my fps. I tried both offworld and REC. I think both are good, but REC was more what I was looking for. It recorded what I wanted to record and barely even affected my fps. Anyone know how they are able to do this? Seems like witchcraft! Im pretty happy with REC so far, but I’m always up to hear others opinions. Has anyone here tried it? Does anyone know of any other plugins that are similar? I’ll probably end up sticking with this since it’s free but honestly I’m just curious since I’m still kind of a noob.

What do you guys think of Tim Sweeney's push for a full AI workflow?

I'm not against AI, but I feel that unreal engine has been pushing these "new" workflows since UE5 and it hasn't quite worked the way they wanted. Shouldn't they try and get Nanite, lumen and their new material system sorted out before trying to revolutionize gaming again? Just hit the pause button and sort out the issues it has now. I feel AI will make a lot more games but the quality will take a massive dip.

Edit: I'm surprised! Usually when I ask a question on reddit it devolves into a mess but I have read some great points on both sides, thnaks!

Custom vehicle physics in UE5 – Looking for feedback!

Hey everyone!

After months of hard working on my custom vehicle physics plugin, I finally put together a short gameplay showcase that I'd like to share with you.

https://youtu.be/hOuMifQY6dE?si=ll7hlMc0aY1zbo4v

The vehicle physics system is built entirely from scratch and doesn't rely on Chaos Vehicles.

One of my main goals has been to find the right balance between realistic and fun driving physics. I want the cars to behave in a believable way, while still being accessible and enjoyable to drive, allowing players to drift and powerslide without needing hundreds of hours of practice. In short a simcade experience. 😄

I know there's still a lot of work to do, especially on the visual side, which unfortunately isn't my strongest skill.

I'd really appreciate hearing what you think, particularly what you'd improve or focus on next. Any feedback, suggestions, or constructive criticism would be more than welcome!

Level blueprint restarting randomly?

I just have a single thing in my level blueprint that JUST plays a looping audio on begin play. Sometimes if the player takes enough damage at a time or deals enough damage at a time the audio restarts. I have no idea what could be doing this but it happens very randomly. I tried adding a do once and it changed nothing. I don't think there's anything in the player's or enemies' code that could trigger anything like this, at most some play sound nodes.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

UE5 UE: 5.5Unreal PCG Wall spline issue

I'm having an issue with making a wall with PCG and splines. If I move one of the splines up or down in height, the entire spline breaks (in the video) I'm not exactly sure whey this is happening or what to do to solve it. I'm guessing it has to do with one of the setting some where...

Here's the library (Available on our new site, VFXAssets by Compositing Academy):
https://vfxassets.com/d/demoreel-footage-for-compositors?mode=greenscreen

All of the greenscreen clips give a free 2K version, as SLOG3 - Sgamut3.Cine Prores 4444 clips, and are free for non-commercial use. They can be used for portfolios or practice projects.

As a professional compositor and 3D generalist myself, I'll be making a bunch of projects with these, but I figured other people might find them useful as source material as well!

Tutorial Unreal 5.8 - Materials Masterclass - Chapter 10: World Position Offset effects

Thumbnail youtu.be
19 Upvotes

In this chapter of the Materials Masterclass we'll take a look at the World Position Offset material parameter, and make a few different material effects using it, from a pulsing lava blob to a billboard that rotates to face the camera.
