Opinion poll: Should posts with predominantly AI-generated content be allowed

Hi everyone!

We've seen a consistent flow of posts featuring predominantly AI-generated assets and tools, and the reactions to them seems mixed. We'd like to know what the community thinks about these posts.

Scope of the poll

This poll is only to see if you think it should be allowed or not. It has nothing to do with new rules, enforcement, whether or not it will actually be banned, changes going forward, how AI-generated posts are detected, etc. Those topics would be their own posts for later community discussion, so they're out of scope for this poll.

Working definition

For the purposes of the poll, we define "AI-generated content" as anything that was predominantly produced with the help of generative AI, and then shared or promoted here. For example, an asset pack of AI-generated art, or a tool whose presentation/code is primarily produced by AI. This doesn't concern minor AI assistance, like Copilot helping out here and there.

If you would be okay with these posts given certain prerequisites (yes, but with flair, disclosure...) then you should vote yes. Remember, we are only polling for your general opinion! Not the details.

Poll: https://strawpoll.com/1MnwkEqQ5n7

The poll will run for 14 days.

Feel free to share the reasoning behind your vote or other thoughts in the comments.

Thanks.

Call For Mods

Hello,

I am Guidez. I have been a mod here for, eh, something to the tune of 10+ years (dang... I'm old). I am currently looking for active members of this community who would like to help out in moderating the subreddit.

Please feel free to respond to this thread if you are interested. A couple of things to note:

  • This is a Unity Engine subreddit. Please leave any biases for/against the engine/company at the door. In fact, leave all your biases at the door. A mod position is not a platform for such things.
  • Understand that this is primarily a community-run, neutral subreddit related to the Unity Engine (2D side). This means the community decides what they think is worthwhile and what is not (upvoting/downvoting exist for a reason), granted it too stays within the realm of neutrality/non-bias.

If you think you understand what this entails and are still interested, please read on.

What I'm looking for:

  • People who actually post, reply, and comment in this subreddit. It doesn't have to be regular, but someone who hasn't contributed for a year in any public capacity is certainly not a candidate. I also understand many people lurk.
  • Those who understand this is not some special status/glorified position. It's tiring, unpaid work.
  • Are looking to help the community:
    • Thrive
    • Find resources for their development
    • Have open discussions about the Unity engine in whatever capacity that may be

If this sounds interesting to you, please reply to this thread with the following:

  • A brief introduction and how long you have been part of or following this community.
  • Why you are interested in becoming a moderator.
  • Any previous moderation or community-management experience you have. Experience is helpful, but not required.
  • How you would approach disagreements, controversial posts, and discussions comparing Unity with other engines.
  • Any ideas you have for improving the subreddit or helping its members.
  • Confirmation that you are comfortable enforcing the rules neutrally, working with the rest of the moderation team, and receiving feedback.

Please do not include private or personally identifying information. Applications will be judged primarily on community involvement, temperament, fairness/neutrality, and willingness to help.

Showcase A look at Throneward’s procedural world generation in Unity

I’m making Throneward in Unity, using 2D sprites with a perspective camera. Here are three generated islands, with 29, 57 and 113 towns. The camera pulls back so you can see how the towns and roads fit together.

Enemy placements are staged for this clip btw loading between maps is cut.

Feedback needed We made a new character animation for when a lab experiment goes wrong on the Moon

We've been working on a new character animation for our Moon colony game.

This is what happens when medical research at the lunar lab doesn't go quite as planned and something goes wrong with the virus.

What do you think of the animation?

Free Asset/Tool made a little magic circle tool, works nice for 2d spell effects

hey! i made a magic circle generator and figured some of you doing 2d might get use out of it

easiest way in unity is export a transparent png, drop it under your character and put a rotate script on it. if you want it animated the full version exports a sprite sheet + json, just slice it by grid in the sprite editor and youre good

free web version does the pngs, the paid one adds sprite sheets, gifs and dissolve masks. links below

Showcase I helped another dev making his game feel better

u/rk00717 posted a trailer of his game a few weeks ago. We've got in touch and I ended up helping him juicing his game. On the left, his original version. On the right, the version I ended up with.

How do you like it ?

Now that few days passed, I feel like I have some more ideas to make it pop even more. But at the same time, I know I have a tendancy to over juice, so I'm trying to keep myself contained 😅

If you are interested in going deeper in details, I made a ~5min video where I explain each changes and my reasoning behind it.

Thanks for reading.

Feedback needed Check my "Who am I? Guess it" like game I have been working for 3 month

So I have been working on this for last 3-4 month and I am thinking to publish this as my debut game on steam. It feels risky, because gameplay might not be for everyone. It is intended to be like chill, detective like game where logic is similar to how akinator works, except it is reverse(we are akinator and try to guess who npc has in their mind from characters in town)

I did art and codes that's why art might look not great. I will improve it after i complete system logics, idk new character template, changing placeholders, some icons and definetily fonts

btw do you think this can sell better as mobile game? I am pen to your advices and actually depend on it

Question/Help The button image color I set via code does not appear while playtesting in editor

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi! I'm pretty sure it's a bug with the editor, but I want to be sure.

So, in this prototype I'm working on, I randomly generate a bunch of random characters from Json definitions, assign to each a color in said definition via a custom ColorDef that contains int r, g, b, a and a ToColor() method that generates a new color from these values. I've done this in the past in other projects, and I don't remember any pitfall here.

Then, when I open a character list window, I try to spawn a button for each character, and assign to the button the color from the definition. I confirmed that the data is read correctly from the definition; I then proceeded to confirm that it's converted correctly into a color; I then verified, at least via Debug.Log(), that the color is correctly assigned to the button image (I use GetComponent<Image>.color = definition.Color.ToColor() ). As you can see in the screenshot, if I click on the color component it shows that the color seems correctly assigned, yet on screen it still appears white.

I've lost basically the whole day since this morning trying to figure this out, help please?

Showcase After literally years of work we now have a playable demo!!

We started wayy back in late 2023.

We've been working on it whilst balancing all the other hurdles life has been throwing it us. Honestly we're so proud we made it this far.

I remember feeling so proud just making a sprite disappear when the player collides with it, giving the illusion of a pickup. That was in 2022! Since then I've learned so much about Unity, and all the amazing free libraries I used to program this game, like Unitask, R3, and VContainer.

We're just a team of two: an artist and a programmer tryna make the indie dream work, and we're working so hard to make the game better, and would love feedback, good or bad!

If the game looks interesting to you, and you play games like Dead Cells or Skul: The Hero Slayer, you can find the demo here: A Tale of Sand and Bone Demo on Steam!

And we're so proud to be in the next fest! 🎉

Question/Help Help Designing A Isometric Bedroom in Unity 2D

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi all. I've just started learning Unity to create a 'fake video game' for an indie short film I'm working on. I don't know yet if I'm totally out of my element. I don't know nothin about coding or games really but looking for help navigating the design portion since I can't find any tutorials to help me out.

I'm trying to make a room and then bring in idling characters into it to walk around and interact with furniture and each other.

I downloaded the asset pack bundle from itch.o and brought them into the asset folders to organize the sprite. I ran into an issue a few times where when I was duplicating the walls and floors to save time since it's so monotonous, that when I'd delete a panel, it would change the level of a random floor/wall tile. Idk what I changed but it stopped doing that and I thought I hit a flow when I got the room completely assembled.

I began adding furniture and playing with the layering order to knock up the furniture from 0 to 1 or 2 so that it would sit above the floors.

I tried copying 4 pieces of floor at a time to extend the size of the room and when I did, all the layers changed and are overlapping weird, even though it says the order laying is at 0 for everything.

I eventually need to bring in characters (bought from this pack https://klimmos.itch.io/cozy-assets-iso-modular-female-character-kit-idle-walk-sit ) but I don't even know where to begin in dressing them or having them move.

I've watched all the 2D video tutorials on Unity and skimmed the options on YouTube but can't find anything that references these kinds of isometric bedrooms.

Any tips? Thank you in advance!

Question/Help Animation in Unity

Okay so this is a part unity part animating part 2d sprite making problem. So I'm trying to make jumping work in my 2D side scroller game. I want forward facing jump, left movement jump and right movement jump. That's all fine and I know how to link them in the animator, connect parameters, and use code to make them work directionally.

What I can't figure out is how to change between states. So if the player jumps left and midway turns right it starts the right animation from the start so looks wrong. I was wondering how to make it jump where if I jump left then stop or change right it matches the frame and continues the jump from x part of the other animations if that makes sense.

I dont want to flip the animation left and right to keep. Yes technically that fixes left and right but not forward facing. But then the buttons and bag and stuff on my character gives it away that it has been simply flipped because everything is now on the wrong side.

Hopefully someone can help with that. If it doesn't make sense I can try explaining it better just say so. But yeah. Thanks in advance.

Free Asset/Tool Hey everyone:) I just released a big UI update for the FREE TileMaker DOT (v2.7.0)!

Post image
2 Upvotes

This update brings a very major quality-of-life overhaul to the startup and project workflow. Most notably, the welcome window has been fully integrated directly into the application core for a seamless single-window experience, complete with a modernized, sleek layout for creating new maps.

I have also streamlined visible ID management by adding a direct overwrite button for your saved ID lists, ensured persistent saving states, updated the in-app Application Legend, and fixed multi-monitor dialog centering issues so all property and key-assignment windows stay perfectly locked to the main editor.

Official site Itch.io: https://crytek22.itch.io/tilemakerdot

GitHub: https://github.com/andrei-voia/TileMakerDOT

YouTube tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fiajGU32Jg

For anyone unfamiliar with the project, TileMaker DOT is a Free (with a very complete, professional paid cheap version too), open source 2D map editor I'm building. It uses a data first, ID based workflow and handles visual depth sorting automatically so you don't have to manage multiple layers for object heights.

Give it a try and let me know if you have any feedback! If the editor helps with your projects and you want to support development, a rating or a small donation on Itch is always appreciated.

Thank you all for your support!

Showcase Recentely released first public demo for my text-driven sidescroller RPG!

Oh woah, it's been a long journey getting to this point, but after all I'm finally ready to show the first rough stage of the game I've been developing for a while now.

The Interloper is a side-scroller RPG set in alternate 1980's in original setting. Without a name or past, you wake up in a port city full of social intrigues. You begin investigating your own disappearance, which leads to a world-wide political conspiracy.

  • Vector 2D graphics inspired by This Is the Police and The Silent Age
  • True detective work without clues or tasks: make your own decisions
  • Solve unique puzzles in an open world area
  • Core references: Pentiment, Disco Elysium, Fallout: New Vegas, Pathologic 2

Please keep in mind that the demo is nothing more than technical proof of concept. Rough Cut is a significant milestone where the core components of the game are functional but may still undergo significant changes. This is an opportunity to test primary features while active development is ongoing.

Any comments of feedback are apriciated!

Play the demo here!

Demo Steam Page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5321620/Hook_Nook_Demo/

Platform: Windows

Hello r/Unity2D!

We're so beyond excited to announce the demo launch of our debut game, Hook Nook, that we developed in Unity, now live for all to play! We've been working on this game for a bit over a year as a small indie studio of four friends and can't wait to hear what you all think about it!

Hook Nook, is a cozy multiplayer idle-fishing game that sits on the bottom of your screen so you still have full access to your desktop for studying, working, or even as you relax watching videos.

You’ll be able to catch over 200 unique hand-drawn fish in the full game (a few less available in the demo, but still a pretty sizable chunk!) and sell them to our eclectic shopkeeps to exchange for upgrades, new fishing gear, and all sorts of cosmetics. (We’re particularly fond of the cat hat that we based off of one of our developers’ cat.)

Fish with up to four friends for who can find the greatest (or weirdest) catch in this unlimited playtime demo that gives you full access to one of the three fishing docks that will be available in the full game!

If you're interested in keeping up on Hook Nook, or wanna learn more about how it was developed, feel free to join us on discord!: https://discord.gg/Dd4RKQWtsm
