Hey everyone!
I just bought this skywatcher classic 200P new, and I saw this black speck on the mirror which is likely the plastic cap shaving off. Should I try to get it off ? and if yes, how?
Thanks!

Purchasing Question Is there a way to get a better Rocker box for my dob?

Hello there.

I have an Apertura 10" dobsonion telescope. Love the thing. My only gripe, and I'm not sure if this is common, is the rocker box feels kinda... cheap kind of? Like it can barely be windy and it'll move, no matter how much i tighten the knobs.

Is there like an upgraded rocker box you can buy for these dobsonion telescopes?? I can't find any rocker boxes individuall sold on high point scientific where I originally bought it, so thought I'd try and ask here.

General Question What's wrong with my telescope?

Am I doing something wrong, or is there something wrong with my telescope? I center the secondary mirror by looking at it, as shown in the picture, but then the laser doesn’t hit the center of the mirror. If I move the laser to the center of the mirror, the alignment of the secondary mirror gets messed up. What is the problem?

My laser collimator is properly aligned.

Purchasing Question Looking for upgrade in telescope

Bought used Meade starpro as 90 yesterday on the way to campground and this was my shot of moon with 9 mm supplied EP and iPhone 16e with exposure -2.0. I tried Saturn, the visual was a blur with the 9mm. Later, I found the main objective lens was very dirty and after some crude cleaning I was able to get a clean crisp view of Jupiter and 4 moons in a line and could see 2 bands early this morning. I am now hooked ha ha. While the visual was incredible to me, the iPhone kept reverting back the exposure and the image of Jupiter came out way to bright and unfocused but it did get it’s moons. Cleaned the diagonal prism and downloaded black magic app and hopeful for images tonight of Saturn and tomorrow morning for Jupiter.

My question is what do you recommend for next step up NEW telescope? I believe I have settled on the Heritage 150p but, I really liked the slow motion controls for holding the image in view that I was with the Meade. My other experience was with a vintage 3” Tasco reflector with a mount that is very tedious and consuming and sometimes impossible to hold the image in view. How will the 150p fare for holding image in view? I read the alt az slow motion controls and tripod are beginner level with the Meade, but I was completely happy with it. I also found the Meade 90mm showed many more deep sky objects than the old Tasco. Fwiw, my BIL gifted the old 3” 700m Tasco (think K mart 1980s) and I was able to get Saturn rings very clearly at about 75x. That prompted to find the used Meade and now that I have seen Jupiter clearly with the Meade, I think I want to purchase a new telescope. Thank you for your advice on what new telescope you think would fit my use (Mostly viewing planets and dsos with maybe some photography but not going all in yet on the photography, want some more visual experiences as a first start.

Thank you for comments about what new telescope might fit me best.

Discussion What was your most recent visual observation?

It's cloudy over here tonight, so I thought we could have a little chat here, if you like to share your most recent observation. Or project, if you have one. This time it's about visual observing.

No big deal, just curious, what planets, DSOs are on your mind right now.

General Question MIRROSKY sp127

So I purchased the MIRROSKY sp127.

It has been delivered and assembled.

Last night I attempted to wing it and start using it and realized I should probably have watched a video first.

It was easy enough to set up and use, the imaging camera found andromeda within 2 minutes and started taking photos.

The app was fairly simple you use

But I lack telescope knowledge.

In addition to the scope I also got some svbony eye pieces.
-70 degree 15mm
- 40 degree 32mm
- 1.25 dielectric diagonal
-uhc filter
-basic pack of colored filters
- celestron omni 2x Barlow

I did a basic alignment for the guide scope and the main scope but I think what I used wasn’t far enough away.
When the guide scope was on target I didn’t see andromeda, it was pointed at a bright star, and I didn’t see that star in my eye piece.

I was using my 32mm and the diagonal. No filters.

The moon was already out of view when I was able to use the scope.

Any guidance or advice would be appreciated.

Of anyone is interested in more information about the sp127 I will be glad to share.

I do own 3 seestars (s50,s50pro,s50 pro)
And the dwarf mini.

General Question LX200 restoration

Hi everyone! I recently got elected to my university astronomy club’s e-board, and I’m trying to get our 8-inch Meade LX200 Classic running again.

We currently use it manually, but constantly nudging it to keep Saturn in view gets annoying. We also have an 8-inch Celestron GoTo telescope that we use with a camera. Ideally, I’d like to point both telescopes at the same deep-sky object so people can compare the camera image with the eyepiece view. I know the visual view will be much fainter, but I think it could be useful for outreach.

Unfortunately, we’re missing the Classic hand controller and DEC motor cable. I searched our storage room and found an AutoStar II controller and an empty LX200GPS mount, but that mount is too large for the 8-inch tube. It might have originally belonged to our observatory’s 14-inch LX200.

Before powering up the Classic, I have a few questions:

  • Capacitors: I’ve read about the original tantalum capacitors failing and damaging the boards. An electrical engineer suggested using a regulated 12V supply instead of 18V. Besides replacing the capacitors, are there practical ways to reduce the risk?
  • Replacement difficulty: I have some soldering experience from a Cisco internship about a year and a half ago, but I’m rusty. How difficult are the capacitor replacements inside the telescope?
  • Computer control: Is there a DIY way to complete the keypad startup handshake without the original controller? I’ve seen commercial boot emulators, but I’m wondering about cheaper alternatives. Ultimately, I’d like to control it from a laptop using Stellarium.
  • DEC cable: Any recommendations for an inexpensive replacement or a verified wiring diagram? I’ve made Ethernet cables before, so I could probably make this cable too. Can I use Cat5 or Cat6 cable with the appropriate connectors and wiring?

Our club’s budget recently got cut, so we’re trying to work with what we already have. I’d appreciate advice on the simplest, cheapest way to get tracking and GoTo working again. Thanks!

Purchasing Question Help me pick one - newbie

Hi,

I'd like to offer a first telescope for a 100% beginner. The idea is to spend a very reasonable price...Is there any decent choice in this list?

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC 114/900 AZ

BRESSER Sirius 70/900 AZ

BRESSER Classic 70/350

BRESSER Classic 60/900 AZ

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC 70/900

National Geographic 76/700 EQ

they're all priced in the range 80-100€ corresponding to my budget.

Or, if you have another one to suggest, I'm totally fine

The idea is to observe the moon and some planets

General Question Orion skyscanner chromatic aberration

I have a orion skyscanner 100mm tabletop dob that seems to present chromatic aberration, it isnt too bad, the more i let an object closer to the edge the more distorted it gets, i thought parabolic mirrors don't show any chromatic aberration regardless of where the object is in the sky. I was wondering if its a lens thing or not, the mirrors look fine and generally the scope works well its just strange to me. Idk if this has happened to anyone else.

I have just purchased this off eBay after waiting for weeks for a reasonable listing to come up. Is this a good deal and what do you think of the eyepieces like are they decent. I know planets and DSOs won’t be like perfect but realistically what is the best quality I’ll be able to see of the likes of Saturn and Jupiter

Purchasing Question Eyepiece for skywatcher heritage 130

Hey all, I recently got into stargazing and I bought a skywatcher heritage 130p and it’s been great! I’d like to know what eye piece would be the best bang for my buck if I’m trying to look at planets and what eye piece would be best if I’m trying to look at nebulae. My budget is probably around $50 or under per eye piece.

Equipment Show-Off Estate Sale Find

Hello! Purchased my first big boy telescope at an estate sale today! Ive done some minor research on the C80 but what are some things I should check maintenence wise with this beauty?

The long twisty tube fine tuner is a bit sticky, there are a few dents on the tube. No idea how to check the mirrors or anything else so ill take any and all advice on maintenence or possible restoration.

The movement on the mount is very smooth and everything stays in place so that seems good. It spent most of its life in a Midwest basement up until today.

Thank you!
