What is everyone’s experience with this. We have seen it a lot this year as compared to previous years. The questions we get are nuts!

UPDATED for post 3/15/2026
Hello! Between the scarcity of accountants and the overabundance of tax rules and regulations, interest in this sub is at an all-time high. Thus, some reminders:
a) This is a restricted sub
You must be approved to post or comment here. To be approved, you must Have User Flair: This sub is for those in the tax preparation profession only
This doesn't mean you have to have a CPA or EA, or be the direct tax preparer. Anyone working for a tax preparation firm/office can be part of this sub. That means the IT person, the front desk, the firm admin, etc.
Requesting approval with NO flair or NOT A PRO flair won't even get a response
b) stay on-topic
Tax questions (not pertaining to recent rules) should go in r/tax or r/technicaltax. This is more about software, IRS/state agency issues, etc. If you can't find the right Post Flair, double-check that it is an appropriate topic for this sub.
c) don't be a jerk

Started using it a few months ago and I'm interested in comments from users or those considering it. I find it well suited to my solo tax practice, even though it's marketed primarily to CFPs and other financial and investment planning pros. I have no use for the tax prep bells and whistles that Canopy, Tax Dome and their competitors include, and I have no interest in reinventing the wheel using AI tools. TIA

Just want to vent. I am growing my business. I have calls with prospects every week. Multiple a week right now. Obviously not everyone wants to work with me. That's OK.
Last week I had a prospect schedule a Zoom meeting introduction. I get on the call. 10min she doesnt join. So I call her cell from the intake form and ask if she's running late and wants to reschedule. Tells me to move it 15min and she will join. So I move it. Then I sit on the new meeting time for 7min waiting. She never shows. I basically wasted 45min of my time. No apologies from this prospect like my time just doesnt matter. I canceled the meeting and emailed her to schedule another one when the time is better. I'm just pissed off. I feel like even if she does schedule another meeting this isn't a client I want to work with because she doesnt value my time at all. I'm just venting because I find it incredibly rude to schedule a meeting and not let me know you are running late or apologize for it.
Had another prospect meet me on a call. I thought it went pretty well. Said they would send me their documents. I email them the link to securely send docs and never heard from them again. At the least you could just send a courtesy email letting me know you have went in a different direction.
Anyone have to deal with this lately?
I work on a lot of C corporations and the insanity with states decoupling from the OBBB IRC 174A immediate expensing of domestic R&E expenditures is a cluster F. I’ve had some clients who had to add back $5.0M of domestic R&E expenses to arrive at state income this year, followed by a 60 month amortization. And this is going to continue on for state purposes each year indefinitely unless the states rescind the decoupling from OBBB IRC 174A provisions.
I can deal with states decoupling from bonus depreciation, but having to go through a separate IRC 174(a) analysis just for state purposes is such an administrative burden. Luckily the work performed to come up with the Fed R&D credit captures the same expenditures and can be used for the state IRC 174(a) computation, but c’mon man, this chasm between Fed rules and state rules is getting out of hand. I filed 7 large C corps this week because I was waiting on the state IRC 174(a) add backs. What are these states thinking?
OBBB allows for the expensing of the previously capitalized IRC 174(a) costs, and the state disallows that deduction, and then I’ve got to disallow the CY Fed IRC 174A expenditures for state purposes, and amortize those expenses over 60 Months at the state level. So I’ve got to deal with Fed book/tax differences and now state book/tax differences of significant amounts.
Anyone else dealing with this?

I couldn't login as of yesterday with this message: "this user has been deactivated. Please contact administrator." When support actually answers the phone, no one is able to get me logged in. I paid the annual subscription fee and have had canopy maybe 45 days? Nothing but issues including not being able to collect payments from my clients this week due to an unknown error that they have yet to fix. Am I the only one??

Got the last rejected return out this morning. And taking a bit of a breath.
Overall I did well this year. Only one major fire to put out, and not 5 like normal lol. It was actually 2, but the second one was a overpayment and for a clients kids, so I don't really count it.
I knew my October would be busy. I spent my summer working on quite a few returns that were on extension. A move I am thanking myself for tremendously. The stress was more manageable given my already filled schedule.
Looking at my taxdome, I am really lacking discipline in clearing those workflows out. This will be a job for my intern and I to work on over the next two months. I have a few clients who didn't come back, so have to clear them from taxdome. I also have a ton of tasks that were completed, but I never marked it as such on taxdome. I have to clean it all up, and have a list of clients I would like to let go.
I need an admin. Fielding calls, managing workflows, chasing after clients, it has become burdensome to me. I find myself getting mad at clients. I.E - I chased after a client after they had the return for two weeks yesterday. I do his S Corp and personal. We filed the S Corp return in August. He then decides to tell me he thinks the numbers are wrong for the S Corp yesterday. I already knew why it wasn't, and if I had an admin, they would see the notes as to why it wasnt wrong. After banging on my desk and screaming into my computer, I got on the phone and explained to him why it wasn't wrong, and asked him why he didn't ask this question in August. I really need to determine if I can do a remote admin, or if I need someone in house. I currently don't have a office line, which adds to the complexity here.
I do financial statement audits for non profits. I already got a status email about one of them just this morning lol. I guess no rest for the wicked.

One click away from signing up for Taxdome. Then I pause. The reason why I want it is for automations and keeping everything in one place. But…
Anchor is my engagement platform and I like the professional look of it (though I would be open to exploring TD for this)
Stanford Tax is what I use for intake and I honestly can’t imagine giving that up. It works so well.
TD payments through Stripe seem to be an issue (this subs consensus) which would remove the biggest benefit of auto releasing the returns upon payment, if I use Anchor.
TD signatures seem to be clunky (again, according to feedback of others).
Bottom line is I want pipelines on autopilot, but with this setup and issues mentioned above there will still be a lot of manual work. I’d rather not trade one manual process for another and pay money for it.
Why not use a status tracker in Excel for a small practice of 100-150 clients (business/individual mix)? Where do you see TD saving you significant amount of time and effort?

So much non-compliance I can’t believe it. Health insurance all wrong on S Corporations. accruing sizable expenses on cash basis companies, no historical fixed asset detail, changed the prior year balance sheet materially, modified basis computations and the capital accounts to amounts never seen before, removed properties from the books through a quagmire of adjustments executed through some of the above.

What are the pros and cons of requiring new business tax clients to use either our bookkeeping services or a trusted outside bookkeeper?
Also, would this include Schedule Cs and 990s?

What's everyone paying for Intuit Enterprise Suite (IES) services? It sounds like they are all over the map and trying to decide if its worth the additional cost for multi-entity features

For whatever reason, I had a dozen clients just not give me their 1095A forms. It was weird because literally all of them had employer insurance in 2024 but marketplace in 2025. So there was no precedent for us to ask for the forms. And all marked no on marketplace insurance on their organizers And of course they’re all the 10/15 clients that don’t respond to any method of communication. So many clients are getting fired, I’m so over it. I can’t care more than they do.

Of course, my last client didnt give me his IP PIN. I would love to fire him. If anyone wants him, let me know and I will introduce you to him. We are very close, like brothers, who were their parents only kid. He's me.

I have a client who I have been bugging to send me his information since March. We finally get it the last week of September. He owes since he sold a rental property and had a gain. I manage to get his return done and send it to him to sign. He is now INSISTING that he does not owe at the state level because, when he logs into the DOR site, it shows $0. Of course, because we haven’t even filed his tax return. He even called them and they told him that no balances are due now. I just can’t anymore. I’ll wait for the letter from the state to come saying he never paid the balance due and then I am firing him.
Happy 10/15!

Last day, of course I have a couple of returns I am processing today. I got an IP PIN rejection and of course the client didn't give this to me.
The system is down today and they can't get it. 🤦♀️
This is just my vent.

Just had two clients come in basically one time. One was a lady with a rental property. Tried to use TurboTax for schedule E. Got confused with AI and then came to me. I did her return and then she complained about my fees. Then she basically asked me to show her how I prepared her return probably so she can try and do it herself next year.
Had another one come in who basically wants me to analyze her withholding so she doesn't owe taxes. Originally wanted to use me for tax prep but seems like she just also wants to keep using turbo tax herself.
I'm just annoyed by these one timers who are only coming to me so they can take the correct returns I prepare and try to copy them next year.

Basically, I am a new partner as of 2024 but have been with the firm 9 years now. It’s a small firm of now 3 partners and 10 employees. There was a 4th partner who is no longer part of the firm, but is working their last year as an employee while they transition the remainder of their clients to me and the other partners.
I was naive when I agreed to adopt my share, but now I know this was a mistake. I am in a position where I turn down probably 5 new clients a week in the off season and countless ones during busy season, so I am by no means hurting for work.
Basically, this partner was doing their own thing, not following office procedures and just allowing clients to set the rules with when and how they wanted things done and I will not operate like this as any sane person shouldn’t. Examples like, clients not signing engagement letters and then dragging their feet when I make them. Turning documents in at the latest possible second and expecting an immediate turn around time. Unreconciled books or just flat out terrible books and then a refusal to fix them. There’s more things, but I’d be here all day.
I wish I could take back my word and just fire them all, but I am a new enough partner that I don’t think that would go over well and it’s a small community who the previous partner is well known in. The other 2 current partners are in agreement with me though that we need to get them retrained asap.
So, as soon as tomorrow is over I will be starting the process of retraining as many as possible. I would like to do this without meeting with every single person if possible, but I know I will have to eventually meet with most of them to get my point across.
My question is, how would you go about it? My current thought is sending out a letter of my expectations and what I will require for me to prep your return, but I am afraid these are the types of clients who will just immediately pitch something like that. Curious to hear from anyone who has gone through something similar.
Thanks for reading my novel during the extension crunch.

I just moved down to Ft. Lauderdale last summer. My office is in Vermont with two staff and very big clientele, but I would like to start building a book of clients down here as well and open another office. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to chat with me and give me the lay of the land. Trying to stand out in FL is very different from Vermont, where I'm pretty well known statewide. Big fish, little pond, to little fish, big pond. I've been trying to find any tax preparer groups or similar around here that I could join. NATP doesn't have anything until January. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I have some larger clients that are becoming more complex and complicated and I can’t keep up with all the moving parts. My knowledge only goes so far. What’s the best way to disengage clients like that? 2025 returns were only just completed but I’m thinking I need to unload them soon so they have time to find someone else for 2026 taxes.

I last made a timesheet entry August 27th. I made it until today, October 12th, before anyone complained. Previous record was like 2.5 weeks tops. I was told "You didn't make a single entry in September. Not just September but half of October. And some of August. No one else has ever done anything like that before"
I am department head, staff people please don't try this.

Is it just me or have they ramped up marketing. Never heard much about this firm any thoughts? They are popping up in my sm lately.

Has anyone found or made a repository for the tax treaty text as amended? It's really annoying looking at six different successive documents that each reference the one before and the paragraphs they are changing.

What is everyone’s immediate thoughts when they hear “business development” as tax professionals? Did anyone get any training on it? Know where to start? How to find and meet people and make offers? Wish you had more leverage with leadership from bringing in money to their firm?
I’ve heard only platitudes most of my 20+ year career:
“go knock on doors”
“Sell cross-line of service”
“you need to build a book of business”
“attend a conference”
“develop client relationships”
“build trust”
I never saw any training on it, and no rainmaker shared their specific process - why would they? I’m sure they’d feel less valuable sharing. Where do you turn?
Am curious what questions this group has and if they are the same as mine. I don’t have actionable answers.
