I fear Sriracha (brachypelma boehmei) would always be the naughty one, though. She got her name for a good reason. Spicy as all hell🌶🌶🌶

I would also love for people to make their own "spider of the week" to post under this one. TOTALLY not just because I want to see everyone's pet tarantulas or anything...

Despite looking a bit concerning, it’s actually normal for her to do this after a molt. Keep on watching for the subtle single fang draw…

Help! GBB Acting Strange and Attacking Prey but Not Eating It…?

• Upvotes

Pics and video attached in comments as editing the post lost the pics.

Got a GBB about a week ago from a reputable reptile shop here in Vancouver, Canada. I don't know if he came with these issues or not, but here is a list of what is worrying me:

  1. He is on the skinny side (Video for reference) and has only eaten once. He attacks the prey (crickets) but doesn't seem able to finish them off, almost like there's an issue subduing them. I've thrown a few in, and even that one time he did eat he struggled with the same thing: feeding response triggered, attacks prey, grabs it, struggles, lets it go, and gives up. I take them out after this.
  2. He isn't webbing very much. He has webbed, but from what I have seen and read, I thought there would be way more.
  3. He keeps on sitting in his water dish; picture attached. He goes back and forth from his burrow to the water dish, so he isn't staying there, but it's still worrying. First pic.

Parameters:

Substrate: dry Reptisoil about 2/3 full with a small moisture gradient by the water dish.
Temperature: 23-24C

Enclosure: 8"x8"x8" acrylic from Amazon, sliding top. 2 hides, some leaf litter, and a fake plant. Also a skull because it's Halloween. Second pic.

Thoughts?

Help! Is this enough cross ventilation for an avicularia?

Post image

My poor A. Avicularia Cookie has been living in the container I bought her in since I got her a few weeks ago. I ordered this enclosure for her, but now I’m having second thoughts about it. Is this enough cross ventilation for an avic or should I think about getting something else?

Help! HELP!!! Loose mealworms + fresh molt

Hi! I have a sling rose hair tarantula. I accidentally dropped two meal worms in its enclosure last night. I decided to try and take it out for a moment or two today so I could remove them (I tried to remove them last night but it stressed her so I decided to give her a little time and just take her out altogether), but when I lifted up a piece of bark in the enclosure I found that it had molted!! I am really excited about it obviously (first time owner) however I am now extremely worried and feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place! If I move it out to remove the mealworms, I’m worried about hurting it or adding unnecessary stress. On the other hand, I’m super worried the mealworms will bother or even bite it in it’s vulnerable state! Right as I realized it was freshly molted I put the enclosure in a dark and quiet area and was just going to leave it be for a few days but then I started overthinking the mealworms :’) They are very tiny worms, nowhere near turning into beetle.

TDLR: I lost two mealworms in a freshly molted slings cage, do I try and get them out or leave the t be until it has hardened up?

Help! Super shy tarantula

Thumbnail

Just adopted a subadult T albopilosus from a local small pet shop that admitted they didn’t know much about tarantulas and were giving it 5 crickets per week and they would leave them roaming with her all week whether she ate them or not.

Her bum is pretty bare from kicking hairs, but she’s apparently super docile as kids from an elementary school nearby would handle her regularly (…).

I presume it’s a female because she’s already three years old. I got her five days ago and put her on reptisoil with some leaf litter and two bark hides with two small pothos plants, a piece of moss and a water dish. Substrate a little moist at the bottom and just around the plants/moss
Added some leaves for privacy as she seemed shy. House at 21C and she is away from drafts.

I check on her a few times a day (can’t help it), but I pretty much leave her alone. Perhaps it’s already too much checking.

I only know she’s alive because every 12h or so, she turns around in her hide so I can see either her bum or her face.

Offered her two live crickets that I “disabled” just prior to putting them at the entrance of her hide so they wouldn’t run around or bother her 2 days ago.

Just removed them last night as she left them there.

Is it too soon to offer a new cricket today or try again next week? I let her be without checking on her for a few days?

Initially was in the corner of a hallway away from windows and direct sunlight, but I just moved the enclosure in my office so there’s less movement around her.

Here is her enclosure at the petshop and the new one I gave her with more burrowing depth (reptile growth from which I switched the mesh top for acrylic). I can barely have a glimpse now she is so deep in the hide.

I would really appreciate if you could let me know if you have any suggestion or if there’s anything I can do better for her

Thanks!

Ps this is my first tarantula. Watched a bunch of Tom’s big spider / tarantula collective / Dave’s little beasties videos and listened to 5 years worth of Tom’s big spider podcasts but am still just an inexperienced beginner

Pps getting first hand experience on the virtue of patience I think and do see why people end up getting a few Ts…

Conversation How to keep my room warm?

I’ve moved into a new place, and the landlord keeps the heat pretty low to keep costs down.

My apartment is really cold. Not just chilly, really cold, like I can barely get out of bed in the morning and I’m using 2 thick blankets.

I have 12 tarantulas and don’t know how to keep them warm when I’m at work!

For the decade I have owned tarantulas, I’ve heard nothing but that heating pads and lamps are dangerous for them. So no-go on that.

I use a space heater. Since my apartment is small, on the lowest setting, it heats up the room in about 2 hours. Then when you turn it off, the room gets cold again in about 2 hours.

I work 8 hour shifts.

I heat my apartment before I leave, but it gets cold within 2 hours, and when I come home my apartment is super cold.

I cannot leave it on while I’m out because it is a fire hazard.

What do I do? It is only going to get colder!
