How much do local shapers make?

I just picked up a custom board from my local shaper for $700, the serial number on it is like 20000. Dude has been shaping boards for around 30 years and isn't well known. Accepts cash only so likely doesn't pay taxes. Let's say he makes a profit off $400 on each board, the rest to materials/glassing, that's like $270k a year over 30 years. Pretty decent career?

Best spot to rent a (short) board and a wetsuit in NJ this Friday morning?

I’m not trying to blow up or expose any spots. I’m a 50+ yo lifelong kook surfer from SD county, but I work remotely for a company in NY. I’m flying in and out of Newark, and my flight out is this Friday afternoon around 3pm, so got some time to kill and have never surfed the east coast. Just looking for a friendly recommendation or two for a good surf shop in NJ to grab a board and a suit for a quick surfy surf. Maybe. Weather permitting. Muchisimas gracias.

BIANNUAL LEASH DRAMA MEGATHREAD No leashes in Pt. Loma

Anyone know how the leashless culture started in Pt. Loma? I can't think of anywhere else where leashes aren't used across CA, especially for shortboarding. Where did this come from? Why?

Crowds at Tamarack

I counted 105 guys between the jetty and the newly reopened staircase at Cherry.

When I was a kid in the 90's, Cherry st was the reliable crowd avoidance spot, even in summer.

I think the swell today had maybe 5 open face set waves every 10 minutes? How did the crowd even get to that size?

Obviously, I dont surf much anymore, and I wonder what goes through peoples heads when they decide to paddle out at an already crowded spot without the sets in the current swell(s) to back it. Back in the day, people would just go somewhere else or down the beach at least.

I keep wanting to get back in the water but days like this are very disheartening. Anyone else grow up here and have a newer hobby? Running is my big one

Best of luck to us all with our endeavors

My friends son dropped in on me….dont think he saw me but had to straighten out and leash broke when the wave exploded on my back. High tide and sketchy at dark so wasn’t gonna attempt getting it once I got in to the houses. Luckily Terra Mar residents let through the gate to get to my car. Had the most epic session there last night and then this 😂🤷‍♂️. If anyone finds this board tomorrow please let me know. 6’10 T and C Regulator. Appreciate any help.

Believed to be Great White breaching at Marina Beach (Monterey county)

This is also where Todd Endris had his attack. He famously reported being saved by dolphins however if you look into it, his story has become questionable in recent years. Anyways, this is a well known sharky spot, but kinda crazy it was right in front of the camera

Enjoy these mediocre clips of what I believe to be the best and most consistent few months in SoCal I’ve ever seen.

Pods moving container with surfboards

Anyone have experience with this? Current plan is to bubblewrap the boards real good, line them up against the wall standing up, put big piece of cardboard to distribute strap tightness and strap them down in two places across the middle of them to secure them.
