Beginner questions belong in /r/beginnersurfers
This subreddit is a place for surfers to discuss surfing and/or share interesting stuff about surfing. It is not a place to learn how to surf.
Beginner questions belong in /r/beginnersurfers.
Examples of beginner questions:
“Is this a ding?”
“Does it need to be repaired?”
“Can it be repaired?”
“What surfboard should I buy to learn on?”
“A longboard won't fit in my car. What shortboard should I buy?”
“I'm going to buy this shortboard to learn on. Is it a good one?”
“Why can't I ride this shortboard I just bought to learn on?”
“Can someone recommend a good surf instructor?”
“How big will the waves be on my trip next year?”
“I want to start surfing. Any tips?”
“I found this board in the trash. How much can I sell it for?”
There are ample resources with which you can find answers to your basic questions.
If you want to discuss that kind of stuff, head on over to /r/beginnersurfers. It's full of people just like you, as well as more experienced folks who want to help you learn.
Beginner questions may be removed with no notice. Because it's simply too much effort to deal with every single post, individually.
Repeat offenders will be banned until they're not a beginner anymore.
The rest of the subreddit rules can be found HERE.

Lovelace/Lovemachine film next week in SD
In case anyone didn’t see - the Lovelace crew is putting out a new movie next week in Oceanside at Shoots (evening of the 23rd). I know there’s other Lovemachine enjoyers here so I thought I’d post for those of us not on instagram.
It sounds like they’re gonna show it over the next couple weeks all over the place also.

New ripcurl elasto wetsuits
Who has tried the new 3/2 elasto wetsuit? It’s expensive for a 3/2 so I’m thinking is it worth the money. Looking for reviews from people who surf a lot and have tried a lot of other 3/2’s over the years. Very temped to get one considering we coming into summer here in Australia.

Little Victories (NorCal Surf Film)
This popped back up in my feed. I learned to surf in Norcal and this is one of my favorite underground surf films from the area. The soundtrack and filming are bangers!

Overcoming Fear of death (sharks) stopping me from surfing at times
I know I’ll cop it a bit but I have a massive fear of death just in general life (seeing a psych apparently got it off my parents). However I love surfing and have been surfing regularly for 5 years now, but I am often finding that my fear of death has then turned into a huge fear of sharks (I’m in aus so I have good reason for this). as a result I have found there’s times where it’s too much and i literally can’t paddle out. Anyone ever experienced something similar? How did you get through it? I find I’m fine when I’m out with my friends but on my own it can be too much and if I do manage to paddle out I often won’t last long or the anxiety will be so much that it is not enjoyable at all. Looking for any genuine advice or tips people might have.

Help finding 90s surf film with Soul Coughing & G. Love
I'm trying to remember the title of a mid-late 90s surf film and IT'S BEEN KILLING ME that I can't remember it! I've been trying to figure it out for months now but no luck with Google, AI, etc. so I'm hoping you guys know it!
I think it was short (like maybe only 30-45 minutes) and had G. Love & Special Sauce and Soul Coughing in the soundtrack and it's where I originally discovered both bands. I'm pretty sure it featured Shane Dorian and Kalani Robb but I can't remember who else.
I'm pretty sure it included all or some of these G Love songs:
The Things That I Used To Do
Garbage Man
This Ain't Living
Shooting Hoops
And these by Soul Coughing:
Soft Serve
The Idiot Kings
If one of you actually remembers or figures it out...I'll let you burn me on as many waves as you want for the rest of the year. PLEASE HELP!

Bought a used board super cheap, Poly or Epoxy?
Basically title, Galison LTO 4 fins and Galison logo cant find anything on. looks like somebody just spray painted and stickered the foam and "glassed over it". Feels weird. I own epoxy and poly, doesnt feel like either. Loxbox fin boxes, too.

Backpacks
What’s up everyone
Does anyone have any recs on a good surf backpack? Looking for something around 30L and ideally it has a wet/dry compartment big enough for a wetty and laptop sleeve. Just need something I can use everyday that can hold my work stuff some dry clothes and wetsuit for when I’m commuting and work as a normal backpack when not surfing. Cheers

[OC] The D-Day Surf Report
Hi! I am a surfer and physical oceanographer specializing in ocean waves. I'm interested in telling stories from the history of wave science. This is my first attempt putting together a video, in it I tell the story of Walter Munk and the development of surf forecasting for the D-Day landings. Hope you find it interesting.

El Salvador November recommendations
I’ll have 3 days at the start of November in El Salvador, Friday - Sunday, flying out Monday morning. Very average surfer, will need to rent a board because I don’t want the stress of bringing my own. Just want to maximize my wave count and maybe get some guiding/coaching so the south shore groms stop bullying me. Is staying by Punta Roca the call, or El Sunzal area?
EDIT: when I say average surfer I mean 20 years of extremely mediocre surfing not “I started last year and am an advanced intermediate surfer”, if that helps with recommendations

Going through an existential crisis living far from the ocean
im "only" about 90 minutes away by car but i grew up three blocks away from the beach.
got married, had a family and now live a good 90 minutes away. i miss the ocean. the smell, the views, the more laid back lifestyle and i desperately wish i could share that with my kids.
wife doesn't feel the same and would be happy to stay where we are forever.
can anyone relate?

Experience with warranty claims on Xcel wetsuits?
As the title reads, I bought an “Xcel 5/4 Infiniti Hooded” wetsuit last November, kept me warm and comfy through the coldest winter that the Northeast US has experience in decades - they did not lie when they marketed this wetty as a workhorse of a suit.
I’m visiting some mates in Scotland so I brought my 5/4 as a backup and after a wipeout at a beach break (obviously no reef and didn’t see any large rocks nearby), the wetsuit ripped right through the outer smooth skin and cleanly exposed the inside of the wetsuit (the Radiant Rebound tech), quite gnarly. Happened on my back, near the seam but the opening cuts horizontally, not vertically through the seam where the smooth skin meets the rest of the neoprene.
Bought the wetsuit through Evo but I can appeal directly with Xcel. I even purchased with my AMEX so my warranty is technically extended for an addition year, not sure how that process works if Xcel denies my claim.
My question is has anyone gone through the warranty claim process with Xcel? Good experience? Bad experience? Did they accept the claim or just reject it? I’m worried they’ll find the smallest detail to just claim it was my fault and not a product defect. Great wetsuit but not cheap 🤷🏽♂️
