Hey guys, genuine question here: what kind of game is Star Citizen actually trying to be?
First off, English isn't my first language, so sorry in advance if I word anything weirdly.
I've been getting this feeling that CIG doesn't really know what they want SC to be anymore. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I'm genuinely confused about where this game is heading.
Is the endgame supposed to be mostly PvP or PvE? With NPC crews being pushed back to sometime after 1.0, are solo players actually going to have enough meaningful endgame content?
And by "solo player", I don't mean someone who loses their mind the second another human joins their party.
Hell, I cleared The Epic of Alexander (Ultimate) back when it first came out in FFXIV. I've got over 1,000 hours in Battlefield PvP, and I've spent a ridiculous amount of time enjoying co-op games like Left 4 Dead, Helldivers, and Darktide.
I like playing with other people. I just don't like having to organize a small military operation every time I want to play a game.
Most of those games have decent matchmaking or some kind of group finder. In SC, though? I don't really see anything comparable right now, or even a particularly clear plan for how it's all supposed to work.
And honestly, I don't find sitting in a turret or doing logistics on someone else's warship nearly as fun as actually captaining my own ship. If CIG wants people to fill those roles, there should be better incentives to make them worthwhile. Or, you know, let us hire NPCs to do the jobs nobody wants to do.
I'm totally fine with difficult PvE content that requires a well-balanced fleet working together. Actually, I'd love that.
But why can't we have fleet content where each player brings their own ship, with NPCs filling the crew positions, and a proper fleet matchmaking system?
Or at least give us some kind of crew recruitment board where players can find jobs and ship owners can hire people whenever they need them.
Seriously, how am I supposed to come home from work on a weekday and spend several hours gathering friends just to get my damn Polaris moving, because there's no crew finder and no NPC crew?
The frustrating part is that I feel like CIG is increasingly pushing the game in exactly that direction.
It sometimes feels like the message is:
"Hey, if you don't have a massive org and a squad of friends ready to jump online whenever you call, enjoy picking from the handful of small ships you can barely operate alone. Maybe you'll get to experience 20% of the game. Capital ships? Yeah, keep dreaming."
And then there's the whole pointless griefing side of PvP, like people randomly strafing ships parked on the ground.
I'm not against PvP. Seriously, I'm not. I just don't understand what's fun about that kind of gameplay, and I don't enjoy it.
But hey, that's just my personal preference. I'm not here to tell anyone else how they're supposed to enjoy the game. If people love large org warfare, multicrew gameplay, piracy, or hardcore PvP, that's completely fine.
I just really want to know what kind of game we're actually going to get.
Because if the end goal is basically EVE Online on steroids, where everything comes down to who can throw more bodies at a fight, NPC crews are deliberately kept weak to force people into multicrew, and finding someone to man your turrets means spending an hour begging in global chat or treating Discord like your second job because there's still no proper group finder...
Then I think I seriously need to reconsider what I'm expecting from this game, and how much more time or money I'm willing to put into it.
I'm not trying to shit on the game. I genuinely want it to succeed.
I just wish I knew what exactly I'm supposed to be looking forward to anymore. :(
