Conversation Topic Beginner trying to learn how to sing Jazz/MT

• Upvotes

Hello! I'm an 18y old guy who wants to learn how to sing as I've always wanted to and now that I'm getting out of high school, I'm gonna have more time! I love Musical Theatre and Jazz and if anyone has any recommended Youtube channels/videos to look into to be able to learn that would be great!

(Yes I know getting a vocal teacher would be much better but unfortunately I do not have the means to afford one atm.)

Resource Is tuner-pitch accurate???

Post image

It says i hit a6. (I got it on the middle shortly after this) it definately felt higher than anything else I've ever got. The highest i got before this was d6 which was confirmed by someone who knows piano lol and c6 is the highest i can get consistently enough before things get difficult in head voice.... but the first time hitting c6 was way harder than this was... and it is definately higher than d6... and feels COMPLETELY different than head voice.

I got it at least 5 times before i tapped out. My first c6 was worse though. No pain but i can't get the whistle like i was. I hope practice gets it back. It just happened idk exactly what i did but i will try to recreateand stabilize it just like i did my first c6... im confused lol it feels real but at the same time Im like shocked and in denial rn if this is accurate

Conversation Topic I'm so confused. Every single person on this subreddit tells me I have pitch issues, but 2 vocal coaches have told me I do not.

I have no idea what is going on. After the first two posts I got with that feedback, I went to two different professional coaches and both said they don't hear a problem.

Not only that, my vocal director in my most recent show tells me every time my pitch is off, and every time i fix it and it never happens again.

People here being overly critical?? Is the audio quality warping my voice??? I'm soo lost yall

Advanced or Professional Topic Am I Screaming Wrong?

Hello! I'm a high school student who loves Ado, 9Lana, and similar style singers. I'm learning how to growl and scream. It took me a long time, but I managed to get growls down to the point where I can do them pretty easily (Also, there is no pain.) I'm just now learning how to get that growl-like tone to hold on a note, though it does feel different from growling. The way screaming feels to me is like... Singing a very powerful, straight tone and relaxing it a bit. Singing a bit lower to tap into a scream.

A week ago, I did this perfectly after warming up. It sounded amazing and there was no pain. Later that evening, I practiced again, but this time I did it multiple times in a row, and I didn't warm up again. Afterwards, a dull soreness came in my throat. It felt like any other time I over sing. The problem is that I still feel that strain when I talk or sing for a while. There's never any sharp, burning, or throbbing pain; just a mild soreness.

I talked to a nurse about it, and she says it's because I've been non-stop talking at high school and work (I work at McDonald's, so I have to talk for hours on end taking orders), I haven't gotten proper sleep, and I haven't drank enough water. She says that the strain will heal.

I guess I'm just worried that I was doing something wrong with my technique. Is screaming supposed to be as easy as singing softly, like I do in choir? Is it possible that my voice just hasn't gained enough strength yet, or am I doing it all completely wrong? I guess I'm just afraid to lose my voice permanently, even though that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Conversation Topic Should I keep seeing this teacher?

I’ve started seeing this teacher and so far I’ve attended 3 lessons with her. She has a background in opera singing and she seems really knowledgeable, but I find her kind of hard to follow and to not be the best and explaining things. I do actually notice positive difference in the way my voice sounds whenever I’m able to apply her techniques as she’s instructed, but overall I still find it hard to get my head around what she’s trying to explain and she kind of just moves really quickly from one thing to another and it’s just a lot of information. She has some (what feel like) quite unique methods and she’s getting me to think about a lot of things I’ve never considered before with my singing technique which I have appreciated a lot.

Just not sure whether or not I should stick with her or try and find someone else who I might find easier to follow, but I don’t want to miss out on the value she might be able to bring me. I’m worried that the trade-off might be someone who’s less knowledgeable about these singing techniques. If I do stick it out with her, how can I get the most out of these lessons?

ETA: For context, I’ve only ever been to one singing lesson before this with a different teacher, so I’m pretty inexperienced with professional singing training.

Just sharing my singing Thank you for giving my last post love. It’s really helped me get back into singing!

Favorite Crime by Olivia Rodrigo (a small snippet cause I won’t lie this song is hard😭). Thank you for all the positive comments on my last video. It’s hard for me to find songs that are in my range so I hope this one is just as good as the last one I posted!

I’ve been trying to get off my phone and do more hobbies recently (I’m disabled and stuck at home most days of the week). Posting here really gave me the push to sing and record more. So thank you guys!🫶🏻

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Emotion? Vibrato??

1) I have no idea how singers sing live with emotion without sacrificing power or pitch. How does one infuse emotion into their singing voice more?

2) I’m sorta copying Kirstin’s vibrato from the pentatonix version and it’s way different than where I usually feel it. This one feels lighter, faster, and more in the nose and throat instead of chest like I’m used to. Do vibratos have classifications and if so, where does this type fit in?

And sorry for the abrupt cut at the end, I immediately started venting :P

It would be great if someone could give me some feedback on my singing and let me know how i can improve? i’ve not had voice lessons, ive just loved singing recently and want to train my voice myself.

the song is paladin strait by twenty one pilots, i just choose to sing to songs i listen to so this is just me causally singing it and figuring it out as I go. i may not get timing and lyrics 100% accurate! also i get very out of breath lol and struggle with breathing whilst singing and i don’t really know how to improve that? any advice on this would be amazing too!! but any feedback would be appreciated and welcomed !!! ty⭐️⭐️

Conversation Topic How to post covers as a shy singer with no instruments?

I only have access to instrumentals and karaoke vids on YouTube but I feel like if I post videos of covers like that they won’t get as much traction, I also want to cover songs differently than the originals and it’s hard to pitch down instrumentals and all that, would TT be my best choice for posting in general? And how do I get over the fear of showing my face while I sing 😭😭

Thumbnail voca.ro

This is a rough take of Feeling Good by the legendary Nina Simone. It is not sung like the original but is rather my own interpretation. Please excuse the lip bubbles and many imperfections including the echo/delay from my microphone. I apologize for that. I am just looking for opinions and tips to help me improve. Thank you everyone. https://voca.ro/15mPB679US04

I am a beginner self taught singer and am looking for opinions on how I am doing with this particular song. I love this song but do you think it suits me? I am using a microphone that has a delay echo sound that I can’t seem to fix so I apologize for this. I am hard of hearing so it helps me to help to hear myself sing in real time. I welcome thoughts and tips. Thank you everyone. https://voca.ro/1jRiAHByW0XS

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Soft palette and clarity

I've been trying to focus on lifting the soft palette when singing, and trying to keep mouth more open while getting a clearer sound, I got some feedback previously that I had a lot of low end so needed to focus on a bit more clarity to cut through, and also opening my mouth more O shaped instead of flatter as my placement was making my vowels sound flat, is it working?

Sang a lyric wrong 😅

Lyrics:

Falling, this cliff came way too soon

Falling, it's my own fault that I'm here

Falling, is there any way to be safe

Right now feels dark, don't know, wish I could touch the light, be home with you

Falling, can't break myself enough

Falling, wanna be a better man

Falling, let the fire make me gold

Right now feels dark, don't know, wish I could touch the light, and know its true

I'm trust falling into you

I'm trust falling into you

I'm trust falling into you

Right now feels dark, I know that I can touch the light, be home with you

Just sharing my singing Sang two lines well

I take singing lessons. I trade someone for Muay Thai sessions. We've just started covering resonance. Sang Someone Like You and I managed to get the first two lines out of the chorus sounding good. Like the voice that left my mouth was a sound I've never produced before and I almost panicked.

I'm beyond elated. I still suck on the whole but improvement is starting to show.

Conversation Topic Is it ok to think of a song?

Ok this is a misleading title, and honestly a very stupid question. I have my prescreenings coming up in the next couple of weeks and I am honestly stressed out because I don't know one of my songs and still haven't gotten the other two to the level I want. So yesterday during class I started thinking of the songs and notes. Like singing it in my head, while making the mouth movements (I prob looked super weird to others). Anyways, I was always told at my conservatory to not sing randomly because it might ruin the pitch of my song (like start at a wrong note and confuse myself). 1. Is that true and 2. Am I just crazy or is this a good idea of mouthing songs but not actually singing em? So technically singing in silent,
