Hi all, I’d appreciate some advice on the below.
I’ve been putting in applications for rescues for a few months now but unfortunately not hearing much back.
More recently I found a super small charity and after some matching have been offered a dog (small/medium lurcher, whippet cross) but being a rescue he does come with some quirks which my partner and I are now reflecting on.
Firstly, the dog has some trauma around his paws from his past life. He is very sensitive around washing, cutting his nails etc. in fact photos show the nails are quite long. I know nails wear down walking on concrete but not sure if there anything we can do about it long term? The charity said they plan to cut his nails when under anesthetic getting neutered. We are worried that this isn't a long term solution and could cause some health issues further down the line.
Secondly, the dog is quite anxious of his foster carers leaving. They can only leave the house one at a time and the dog sleeps in bed with them at night. On the former I think separation anxiety training could fix this. On the latter, I’m all for day time naps in bed but my partner is a super light sleeper and I don’t think that will work for us. The charity suggests that he expects to sleep with his humans. In combination with the separation anxiety, this seems like an issue that could be hard to resolve.
We’re really smitten with the dog and they seem like a total sweetheart. We’ve grown up around dogs but this would be our first dog (and sighthound) are we taking on too much? We understand for the first few months our lives will revolve around the dog and making sure they are settled. After that we’d very much like to incorporate the dog into our lives and go to the pub, to friends houses etc with them but also want to be able to go to the cinema, out for dinner etc ourselves and be able to leave the dog for a few hours (after time built up).
Dog (and specifically sighthound) lovers/owners of Reddit, please give us your advice!

wow, i really can’t believe that our sweet silkie is officially a young adult! we recently celebrated his first birthday and couldn’t be more proud of how much progress he’s made over these past few months.
looking at my first post about him really shows how much he has grown. in an attempt to keep things brief, please know that he is as sweet and mischievous as ever, and above all, he is everything we could’ve hoped for and more.
here’s to many more years together; and thank you for all of the joy you have brought into our lives in such a short amount of time :’)
