Shire Collies in New Hampshire

Post image

I saw a post on here earlier in the week about somebody wanting to know if anybody has purchased a puppy from the same breeder as them. My puppy, Kai, came from Shire Collies in New Hampshire and I was wondering if anyone else had a Shire Collies as well.

Inquiry about Collie First-Time Ownership

I have a strong interest in Rough Collies. They’ve long been my favorite breed, and I’ve spent considerable time researching their temperament, care needs, and training requirements. As a young, first‑time dog owner, I want to make sure I’m preparing responsibly.

I’m currently training to become a dog groomer and have a growing interest in obedience work and potentially a psychiatric service dog, so I’m hoping to learn whether a Rough Collie would be a suitable fit for my lifestyle and goals. I am 20 years old and I plan to adopt a dog after moving into my new rental home in July. Having a yard will be a non‑negotiable part of my housing search.

I will be working full‑time, but I intend to bring my dog to daycare with me at least twice a week and incorporate kennel training into our routine.

I would appreciate insight on whether this plan is realistic and any guidance for someone new to collie ownership—especially when it comes to the financial aspect. How much money should I expect to spend on food, vet, costs, etc..? and on average how much is a rough collie puppy?

Also, if anyone in Colorado can point me in the direction of good local breeders that would be amazing!

Picky puppy or vet visit?

My 10 month old RC hasn't had a great appetite in a couple months.

He's currently on Hills large breed puppy lamb food. Previously on Purina sensitive puppy

We've had issues with him not being super food motivated for training since the start, but he was initially a great eater when it came to meals.

I reached out to my breeder and his siblings seem similar (the ones not with the breeder). Breeder says hers eat great.

Some mornings he won't even eat a bite, evenings are hit and miss. We do take the food away after 15 mins or so.

Tried all the toppers, mix ins etc. His bowels are never great, which was why we switched from PPP, but likely related to treats. So trying to limit extras when possible.

He will eat treats, eat a bit of kibble if hand fed, takes kibble as low value treats.

Beyond mushy poops, his energy and everything else seems normal. He's around 57lbs

Vet or normal collie things?

Question Any Garlind ridge collie owners out there?

We are looking at a collie from Garlind Ridge Collies and I wanted to see if anyone has feedback on the pups they’ve gotten from them? Mostly looking for temperament and personality info but I would love pictures! :)

Bonus points. If you know your pups parents! We would be first time collie owners (not new dog owners) and I’m trying to get a good sense for what temperaments will be like so I can make the most informed and responsible decisions.

A few months ago I posted about my girl who has an inoperable liver tumor and wondered whether or not we should take her on a road trip we had planned. Well we took her! And I’m so glad we did. We did about 30 hours in the car - driving through 5 states over 8 days. She had a blast. We took her on some easy trails and limited the time she spent alone in our airbnbs. I’ll cherish the memories forever ❤️

Hello everyone… just moved from the shiba Reddit to this one as prior shiba owner (cat of dogs) and just read that collies are very cat like, not just get a long with cats… anything else not mentioned in the breed page. So far really enjoy the off switch indoors, keeping her space clean, the negotiate vs rote obedience, she also gives me leg up when I pet her. Do collies bond super fast bc it took a year with my shiba… also it’s cute bc when she is anxious will z-track and circle and yip and do head sonar, which is an easier read than a shiba which are more self contained.

Discussion My newly adopted collie bites

Hello people. I have three rough collie girls, aged 5, 4 and 1. I have the 5yo and 1yo from a puppy, raised by me, sweet girls, know lots of tricks, listen very well. The 4yo tho, i adopted her nearly half a year ago, she's gonna be 5 on christmas (christmas baby lol).

She's the sweetest little girl, terribly cuddly, she doesn't wanna leave my side.

The problem is, she's not raised by me. Despite her soft, gentle and cuddly nature, she's a perfect watchdog. She barks all night, and doesn't let anyone enter the estate without me convincing her that everything is fine.

About a month ago, she bite a delivery guy. I ordered a wardrobe and two guys came delivering it in two boxes. I convinced Jessie (collie i talk about) that everything is fine about the first one, and she let him in. But after a few seconds, other guy came in. She immidiately ran towards him and bit his ankle. Not too bad, just gently, but still. It was terribly embarassing situation, luckily the guy was a dog lover and laughed it off.

But today, another delivery guy came. It's not like i didn't have any deliveries between those incidents, but i was careful. So, I opened the gate today and Jessie ran towards him and bit his leg, this time with more force, his leg started bleeding, just a bit, but still. Again, terrible situation. I showed him her pet pass with all her vaccines to calm him down, but still, wasn't situation you would wanna get into.

Now i don't know what to do. I'm worried this might happen again. As i said, she's otherwise so very gentle and sweet, but this is already a second incident. I trust her with my life, but i would like to be able to trust her with others too.

Waiting for my puppy

I haven't had a puppy for about 17 years as my other dogs have all been adults or lived a long time - and with our last girl passing, now is the time!

I had forgotten how painful it is to wait the last few weeks once the puppy is born! He is currently 3 weeks old so 6 weeks or so to go.

We are choosing between two tricolour boys!

Advice (liver mass on senior collie)

Hi!

I'm struggling with deciding which path to take regarding my dog's health, so I figured I'd post here and see if anyone has any words of wisdom.

My collie, Lana, is 11 years old. She's been struggling with back pain and disc disease for about two years. We've mostly been managing it by adjusting her pain medication as needed and taking a proactive approach at home, including daily gentle exercise and doing everything else we can to keep her comfortable.

About 10 days ago, a mass was found on her liver. Based on the imaging alone, the vets can't tell whether it's a tumor or, if it is, whether it's cancerous. The only way to find out for sure is through surgery.

I was initially set on going ahead with it, but after consulting with the surgeon, I'm not so sure anymore. Aside from the risks associated with anesthesia and potential post-surgical infections, there's also the possibility of worsening her back condition. The surgeon even mentioned a risk of temporary paralysis because of the position she'd need to be in during surgery.

At this point, the liver mass isn't causing her any pain or noticeable symptoms, but her back is, so I'm struggling to weigh the risks and benefits of putting her through surgery.

If it turns out to be cancer, I'm also not sure I'd want to put her through chemotherapy or other aggressive treatments. My priority is to preserve her quality of life rather than focus on quantity of life.

Has anyone been in a similar situation with an older dog? I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, how you approached the decision, and anything you wish you'd known at the time.

Thank you! ❤️

Discussion Update about my pup who refuses to climb the stairs

Post image
225 Upvotes

I posted a few days ago asking for advice about my 17-week-old Rough Collie, Winnie, who absolutely refuses to climb the stairs in my apartment building. I wanted to give a little update and see if anyone has additional suggestions!

Unfortunately, we haven’t made much progress lol.

I’ve been using treats, praise, and plenty of encouragement to help her become comfortable with the stairs. Interestingly, she has absolutely no problem putting her front paws up onto the steps. She’ll even reach up two steps with her front legs, but her back legs remain firmly planted on the ground, stretched out behind her. She just will NOT bring her back end up!

I even had my parents, whom she absolutely adores, stand at the top of the stairs and encourage her to come up. She wouldn’t even approach them. 😭

What’s so confusing is that she has no problem whatsoever going up and down the outdoor porch steps at my parents’ house. She handles those quickly and confidently, so I know she’s capable of navigating stairs.

She’s also been an incredibly quick learner with practically everything else we’ve worked on. Sit, stay, place, crate, recall, and leash manners have all come relatively easily to her. This is the first thing we’ve really struggled with.

I’ve tried putting her on the last couple of steps, but she becomes hesitant and sometimes turns around to go back down. I’m realizing that I may have been pushing her too much, so I’m trying to approach this more patiently and avoid making the staircase a negative experience.

The problem is that I live on the third floor, and she’s getting heavier every week. Carrying her up and down multiple times a day is becoming increasingly difficult.

Has anyone experienced this specific issue where their Collie will put their front paws on the stairs but absolutely refuses to move their back legs? Could it be a confidence or coordination issue, or is she simply intimidated by this particular staircase?

I’d really appreciate any additional advice, especially from anyone whose Collie eventually overcame something similar!

Breeding Emphasis/Fitness to Purpose

The title might not be the best choice be bear with me. I'm been thinking a lot about collies lately. I have a small, mixed livestock farm in the northeast U.S., and had border collies for many years. A few years ago, we decided to move in a different direction with working dogs -- something that would be primarily a family dog and suitable to the relatively light work we had for a dog to do. We ended up with an English Shepherd, but for a range of reasons that didn't really work out.

I have a strong curiosity about collies, as the ones I've known have been amazing family dogs and *phenomenal* with kids. The challenge has been that I cannot find any breeders who are focused on fitness to purpose. By this I mean I have not been able to find any rough or smooth collie breeders who are intentional about producing farm/sheep dogs; every breeder I've found so far is focused on bench/conformation and pet dogs. Are there any collie breeders out there who are purposely selecting for all around farm and family collies? The kind of Ol' Shep collies that can lie on the porch with me while I drink my morning coffee, go to the woods with the kids and play with them in the creek, then come home and have enough sheep sense to help me when I have to drench and tag... It doesn't take many generations for a breed to lose its stock sense, so I know I would need to find a breeder who is purposely selecting for those skills. Heck, *I* would love to cultivate such dogs! But I'd need a foundation to start from.

Where do I find a *total* collie.
