I’m not really sure where to begin, but I was directed to this community after sharing my concerns about my younger brother’s addiction to 7-OH.
I’m 18 years older than him, and we’ve always shared a close relationship. Recently, he came to me and admitted that he was struggling with a 7-OH addiction. At his worst, he was taking more than 1,000 mg a day. He has been trying to taper down and told me he had reduced his dose to around 200 mg before attempting to quit.
When he first told me, I honestly had no idea what 7-OH was. I knew about kratom, but I had always understood it to be a relatively harmless herbal substance. I certainly didn’t realize that it could lead to an overdose. The more I’ve learned, the more I’ve realized how completely wrong I was.
I also have to admit something that makes me feel ashamed: I’ve been terrified to learn the full extent of what he’s doing to himself. Not because I don’t care, but because I care so fucking much. I think part of me has been afraid to confront how serious this really is.
Then today, I read an article in the San Francisco Standard about the city’s first recorded overdose death involving MGM-15, another extremely potent kratom-derived opioid reportedly being sold in smoke shops and gas stations. My heart just sank.
I realize MGM-15 isn’t the same thing as 7-OH, but learning about the dangers of these increasingly potent kratom-derived products, including their potential to cause fatal overdoses, has been a terrifying wake-up call.
My brother is only 19. He’s going through his first devastating breakup, dealing with difficult family circumstances, and recently lost his job. I know firsthand how heartbreak and depression can cloud your judgment and make you desperate for anything that temporarily takes the pain away. That’s what scares me most: not just the physical addiction, but the emotional pain underneath it.
A couple of years ago, I ended up in the hospital after making some incredibly dangerous decisions while struggling with my own heartbreak. My mom brought my younger brother to see me so he could understand how serious the consequences of those decisions could be. The thought of watching him go down a similar path breaks my heart.
But here’s what I’m holding on to: he came to me. He trusted me enough to tell me the truth about what was happening, and he’s actively asking for help. He’s never come to me with anything like this before, and I can’t begin to explain how much that trust means to me.
I don’t want to scare him away by lecturing him, judging him, or acting like another parent. I want to be someone he can be completely honest with, especially when things get difficult. But I also can’t let my fear of learning the truth keep me from understanding what he’s up against.
So here I am.
I’m hoping to hear from people who have experienced 7-OH addiction, particularly at the doses he was taking. What do you wish your family had understood? What helped you feel supported without feeling judged or controlled? And what should someone in my position know that I may not even realize I need to ask?
I’m scared for him. Really fucking scared. But he came to me because he needed someone, and I’ll be damned if I let him down.
