MOD NOTE A quick read for all the new people joining!

Greetings everyone, since a bunch of new faces keep rolling in with great questions (and because the original FAQ filled up fast), here’s Part 2 of our big ol’ Prozac/Fluoxetine FAQ post. 💊 Still not medical advice — just what I’ve seen as someone who’s been on Prozac for a while and moderating this sub. Everyone’s brain works differently, so your mileage may vary. ⚠️ Always double-check with your healthcare advisor.

— FAQ (Part 2) —

16. Why am I suddenly so tired on Prozac? 💊

Fatigue is super common early on. Your brain’s rebalancing serotonin, and that can feel like someone hit your internal “low power mode.” Usually improves in a few weeks.

17. Why am I having stomach issues? 💊

Nausea, loose stools, or appetite changes are classic startup side effects. The gut has tons of serotonin receptors, so it reacts at first. Usually settles down soon.

18. Can Prozac make my anxiety worse? 💊

Yep. Startup jitters are real. Temporary increased anxiety, restlessness, or feeling “on edge” can happen. Generally fades as your system adjusts.

19. Why am I sweating more? 💊

SSRI sweats are a thing actually. Night sweats, random sweating, etc. Not harmful, just annoying. Often improves over time.

20. Can I drink alcohol on Prozac? 💊

You can, but go easy. Alcohol may hit harder or mess with your mood the next day. Know your limits and listen to your body.

21. Is it normal to feel wired or restless? 💊

Totally. Some people get a revved-up, can’t-sit-still feeling early on. Should settle; if it’s intense, tell your doctor in case it’s akathisia.

22. What if I have no appetite? 💊

Happens to a lot of people early on. Appetite usually returns as your brain stabilizes.

23. Why does everything feel slow or foggy? 💊

Brain fog can show up during dose changes or the first couple weeks. Usually temporary.

24. Can Prozac affect libido? 💊

Unfortunately, yes. lower libido, trouble finishing, or less sensitivity. Super common with SSRIs. There are workarounds if it becomes a problem.

25. Is it normal to cry less / feel detached? 💊

Some people notice muted emotions. Dose tweaks can help if it’s bothersome . 26. Does Prozac interact with birth control? 💊 No. Prozac doesn’t reduce birth control effectiveness.

27. Can I take antihistamines or cold meds with Prozac? 💊

Most OTC meds are fine, but be cautious with high doses of dextromethorphan. When in doubt, ask a pharmacist.

28. Why am I yawning so much? 💊

Excessive yawning is surprisingly common with SSRIs. Harmless, though weird.

29. Is insomnia normal at the start? 💊

Yes. Some people get more energized or restless when first starting Prozac. Sleep usually normalizes.

30. What if 20 mg doesn’t feel like enough? 💊

Very normal. Many people need 30–40 mg. Don’t adjust without your prescriber.

31. Can Prozac stop working after a while? 💊

“Poop-out” can happen, but it’s not common early on. Dose tweaks or augmentation can help.

32. Is it safe long-term? 💊

Generally yes. SSRIs have long-term research behind them. Work with your doctor on duration.

33. Why do I feel weird after increasing the dose? 💊

Dose bumps can bring back temporary startup effects, anxiety, nausea, headaches. Usually settles.

34. Can I exercise on Prozac? 💊

Absolutely. Exercise actually complements SSRI treatment. Just be mindful if you’re dizzy or fatigued during the adjustment.

35. What if I still don’t feel anything after weeks? 💊

Some people take 6–10 weeks to notice meaningful differences. If there’s zero improvement after that, your prescriber might adjust your dose or try a new SSRI.

Sorry for being inactive as I, myself is dealing with new medications rn. If you’re reading this and feeling overwhelmed, confused, hopeful, scared, relieved, or all of the above, you’re exactly where most of us started. 💛 Prozac isn’t a magic switch; it’s more like learning to walk again with steadier legs. MOD NOTE For the new people joining!

Greetings everyone, Since a lot of new faces pop in asking the same stuff about Prozac, here’s a big ol’ FAQ post. Not medical advice though, just what I’ve seen as someone on Prozac for a while and moderating this sub. Hope it helps calm the nerves if you’re just starting out. ⚠️: Always double-check with your healthcare advisor. Everyone’s brain is wired differently.

-FAQ- 1. How long until it kicks in? 💊 ️ Small changes in 2 to 4 weeks, fuller effect 6 to 8 weeks. It’s more like a dimmer switch than a light switch.

  1. Why do I feel worse before better? 💊 ️ Early side effects can make you feel off, think anxiety spikes, nausea, or emotional weirdness. Usually temporary.

  2. Do the side effects calm down? 💊 Most early ones (nausea, headaches, jitters, sleep changes) ease up after a few weeks. Sexual side effects can stick longer, varies person to person.

    1. Will I get addicted to Prozac? 💊 Nope. It’s not addictive in the way nicotine or alcohol is. You can have withdrawal-like effects if you stop suddenly, but that’s because your brain’s adjusting, not because you’re hooked.
  3. What if I miss a dose? 💊 Missing one pill usually isn’t a crisis (Prozac has a long half-life, meaning it stays in your system for days). Just take the next one at your regular time. Don’t double-dose.

  4. Should I take it in the morning or at night? 💊 ️ Depends on you. Some people feel energized → take it in the morning. Some get sleepy → take it at night. Trial and error is normal.

  5. Can I drink coffee with Prozac? 💊 Yep, but watch out. Prozac can make some people jittery in the beginning, and caffeine can crank that up.

  6. What’s the deal with weird dreams? 💊 ️ Totally a thing. Vivid dreams, odd storylines, even nightmares. Usually settles with time.

  7. Will I gain/lose weight? 💊 ️ Mixed bag. Some lose at first (less appetite), some gain slowly over time. Not guaranteed either way.

  8. How do I know if it’s working? 💊 It’s usually subtle. You might notice you don’t spiral as hard, you bounce back quicker, or daily stuff feels less heavy. It’s rarely a dramatic “woah I’m cured” moment.

  9. Can I take other meds/supplements with Prozac? 💊 ️ Some combos can be risky (like certain migraine meds, St. John’s Wort, MAOIs). Always run it by your prescriber or pharmacist first.

  10. What happens if I stop taking it? 💊 ️ Because Prozac has a long half-life, tapering off is usually easier than other SSRIs. Still, don’t just quit cold turkey. Let your doc guide you.

  11. Can it make me feel numb? 💊 Emotional blunting is real for some people. It doesn’t mean you’ll never feel joy again, but you may notice less intense highs/lows. It's worth talking to your doctor if it bothers you.

  12. Will Prozac change my personality? 💊 Nope. It doesn’t create a new “you.” Ideally, it helps you feel more like yourself without depression/anxiety weighing you down.

  13. Why do I feel emotionally flat? 💊 ️ Emotional blunting may not feel sad, but you also don’t feel super happy. Sometimes lowering the dose or switching meds helps. Talk to your doctor if it’s a dealbreaker.

And yes,if there’s something on your mind that I didn’t cover here, please don’t hold back. Ask away in the comments, no matter how “small” or “silly” it feels. We’ve all been the new person googling side effects at 2 AM. This sub is meant to feel like a safe little corner of the internet where you don’t have to have it all figured out. We’re here to share, vent, laugh about the weird dreams, and remind each other that starting meds isn’t a weakness rather it’s a step toward healing. You’re not alone in this. You’ve got a whole community walking alongside you, one day at a time.

SUCCESS STORY Prozac changed my life!

It works guys! It really does! Been taking it for almost a year and I have never been that happy/relaxed in my life.

It’s teaching me so much about my self, how to deal with my strong emotions, how to deal with people and how to take MUCH BETTER AND STABLE DECISIONS.

Stay consistent because consistency really matters, missing a dose or two does make a difference (don’t stress about it though your body still catches up).

For reference, I’m a 27 year old female, taking 20 mg Prozac mostly for anxiety (this is my first anti anxiety/antidepressant ever).

I’m here if you have any questions/concerns

QUESTION opinions on dose increase

i was prescribed prozac (20mg) as my first ever antidepressant

i was prescribed by my gp without ever speaking with a psychiatrist (first meeting with the psychiatrist will be after a month and a half on the meds) and after doing some research decided to break my tablets in half to dose 10mg for the first little while

i’m 4 days in, super minimal side effects and feeling some benefits in mood in sleep (maybe placebo, idk) ((i also started taking the med at a point where my ocd was a bit more dormant, so my baseline anxiety at the time of starting was lower than normal))

i was thinking about upping the dose to my prescribed 20mg after a week, but if i’m reacting well to 10mg should i just stick with it until my next appointment?

maybe kind of a silly question but i have a lot of anxiety surrounding medication so it took a decent amount of courage seeking out my diagnosis and medication in the first place; i also see that 20mg is referenced as the minimum effective dosage for adults in a lot of places so wonder if 10mg might just not do much if i stick with it

QUESTION Feeling better after 2 doses?

So I stopped 40mg cold turkey back in August. It’s been awful. Crying. Anxious. Not eating. Staying in bed all day. Thoughts of deleting myself. Almost went to hospital a few days ago. Also genuinely looking and feeling lifeless. I finally restarted yesterday and took my second dose today of 10mg. That awful look in my eyes is gone. Only cried a tiny bit today. Able to talk and crack jokes again and still not doing great but went from a 2/10 to a solid 6/10 since taking the two doses. Mind it a bit more quiet. Is it placebo?

QUESTION If Prozac worked for years, should I increase my dose or try another SSRI?

I've only ever taken Prozac. It worked well enough for years, but I have nothing else to compare it to. My main issues are severe anxiety, depression, harm-OCD/intrusive thoughts, and occasional panic.

After years of stability, I've recently had a pretty bad flare-up (possible Prozac poop-out?), and I'm torn between increasing my dose or trying something different.

Switching honestly scares me. I know I've tolerated Prozac, and the thought of tapering off, trying something new, titrating up, potentially getting worse, and spending months trying to stabilize again (all for a hit or miss) is absolutely effing terrifying... Especially knowing how bad I can spiral and how debilitated I could become. Been there, done that, never want to experience that again.

I'm also wondering if responding well to one SSRI makes you more likely to respond well to others, or if it's really just trial and error... and are SNRI's even worth looking into? Or just stick with focusing on SSRI's.

For anyone who's switched:

  1. How difficult was the transition and did your anxiety get worse?

  2. Did you find something that worked better? Was it worth it?

  3. If your original SSRI worked for years but suddenly gave out, did you try increasing the dose before switching?

I've looked into a few alternatives based on my symptom profile, mainly Zoloft, Lexapro, Luvox, and Paxil, but I'm not sure whether switching is worth the risk when Prozac has helped me for so long. Whatever I would hypothetically try next I'd hope to be in it for the long haul.

So, would you stick with what you know and try a higher dose first, or consider switching?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in a similar situation.

QUESTION Wellbutrin added

For those taking Wellbutrin alongside Prozac, what was your experience like when you first started Wellbutrin? Was the adjustment period as rough as it was with Prozac? I’m honestly scared to start because I really don’t want to go through another difficult adjustment phase. 😩

QUESTION on week 3 of 50mg and i feel like i’m gonna die

for context, i started my first dose of 10mg prozac on august 14 2026. i was on that for about a week before increasing to 20mg for 2 weeks, then 40mg for 3 weeks. i’ve been on and increased dose of 50mg for the past 3 weeks now and i feel like my anxiety has skyrocketed ever since i went on prozac.

the only time i felt some sort of relief for anxiety was probably on week 2 or 3 of 40mg. but my ocd only improved much more on 50mg.

i don’t know what to do. i have 3 more weeks of 50mg, and i’m seeing my doctor on 12 november 2026. i don’t know if i should request for a change of meds or just stick it out. my ocd isn’t completely gone but it has improved by maybe 20-30% for certain symptoms. but i still can’t function as normally as i would like to overall.

im wondering if i should just stick it out for the next 3 weeks and see if there’s improvement?

GETTING OFF PROZAC ER visit and they found prolonged QT intervals

Ive been taking 20mg for 4 weeks (10mg first 2 weeks so total 6 weeks). I haven’t noticed therapeutic benefit but I had a lot of tremors and shaking. I had my first visit with an NP and she added Wellbutrin, i started taking it 2 days ago. Yesterday at work I squatted to pick something up and when I stood up I had a vasovagal reaction and almost fainted twice but I felt so bad for hours. I went to the ER a few hours after and my hands and feet felt tingly and I felt too weak to walk from the car. They found prolonged qt intervals and the doctor told me to stop prozac, I had never heard of that possible effect and I assumed I was having a bad reaction to Wellbutrin.

GETTING OFF PROZAC Weaning off after 20 years…

Hi all,

As the title says, I have been on Prozac for nearly 20 years (almost 2/3 of my life, which is wild to think about). I noticed a few months ago that my Prozac wasn’t doing much for me anymore. I’m already on Wellbutrin 150mg and am now being bumped up to 300mg.

I’ve known I would have to switch off of Prozac eventually, but have been avoiding it because I’m scared. I don’t know what my brain will be like without it.

I’ve only been on the slow taper for about 3 days now. I went from 40mg to 30mg. My question is if it’s normal to feel withdrawal symptoms this quickly.

I’ve been exhausted, shaky, constantly thirsty, have had a headache and major brain fog.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

IM NEW HERE! 12 year old daughter.

Hi everyone,

My 12 year old daughter has out of the blue started major, major school avoidance.

She has always been a little anxious - but nothing serious and she’s always managed and got through.

I suspect her masking has finally caught up with her.

She is awaiting a asd and adhd assessment.

The dc has prescribed her 20mg prozec once a day.

Does anyone have any experience with this on a child around that age ?

Thanks

QUESTION Started fluoxetine almost a month ago and I'm not sure if it's working¿

Everytime I feel some kind of improvement I get overwhelmed thinking it might be some strong placebo effect and that things are actually not going okay. Idk if this is normal or it's my ocd acting up, and if it was the later, would that mean it isn't working? I'm really new to the whole meds thing

SUPPORT REQUEST Really struggling on week 3 into 4

Started on 40mg every other day (I know that’s not the best way to go about this but got approval from my Dr after I was off for 2 months) on Sept 29th and I’m having a really hard time with severe anxiety and OCD tendencies/ feeling hopeless. I keep looking at stuff and picking it apart on myself, checking constantly…trying so hard to get through this.

It has been really hard to eat. I’ve been off and on this medication before and the onboarding was bad but I just feel so hopeless right now…

I have never taking any psych meds before, I am on I think 20mg, but have noticed pretty muck nothing after 2.5 weeks. I took for my constant background anxiety but it still seems to be the same. Dosage issue usually or how long does it take to start to or fully work?

QUESTION Two 20 mg pills work less than one 40 mg pill?

So I have a question. I had to get a new psych because my original one became out of network. I couldn’t find one for a couple months because my insurance is like the lowest level so I was off for a couple of months, while my gp really didn’t want to prescribe me my meds and I had to fight to get a month’s worth of them while I looked. I got my one month dose and was rationing them until I got a new psych.

Now that I got my new psych, she decided to give me a starter dose of 20 mg of Prozac with my 150 mg of Wellbutrin. The Wellbutrin I felt the difference on the spot, but the 20 mg did nothing. I had a couple 40 mg pills and those helped instantly. I got my psych to up my meds to 40 mg and have been taking two 20 mgs while I wait for my pharmacy to be ready with my 40. But I’ve noticed that my two 20s are not as effective. Does anyone know why that is?

QUESTION Increased libido and frequent erections since starting Prozac anyone else? (M34)

I’m almost 34 and have been taking Prozac for about two weeks. Since starting, I’ve noticed a big increase in how often I get erections, sometimes even when I’m not feeling sexually aroused. At other times, my sex drive itself is noticeably higher too.

It’s happening enough that it’s becoming distracting and frustrating. Even after multiple orgasm, the erections and arousal keep coming back. Previously, I’d usually have very little interest for the rest of the day.

It almost feels like going through puberty again a slight exaggeration, but that’s how unexpected this has been. It’s getting in the way of concentrating and going about my day.

Whenever I look up sexual side effects of Prozac, I mostly find information about reduced libido or difficulty getting erections. I haven’t found much about experiencing the opposite.

Has anyone else noticed increased libido or frequent spontaneous erections after starting Prozac? If so, did it settle down after the first few weeks?

QUESTION Extreme Tiredness 12 Weeks

I’ve been taking 10mg of Prozac for 12 weeks and I am extremely tired all the time lately. When I first started the medication, I had so much energy and was feeling amazing. I’ve had no other side effects and have been loving it.

At 7 weeks, I noticed an extreme decline in my energy and I’ve become so unbelievably tired. I asked my doctor about this, and they said they believe this is from the medication and that we should lower the dose to 5mg (liquid form). I started this a couple days ago. The tiredness that I’m experiencing is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before and I don’t understand why it would suddenly occur 7 weeks into the medication. I’m hoping to stay on Prozac because it has helped me tremendously with my mood, but the fatigue isn’t worth it. I’ve tried 3 other antidepressants in the past and had bad side effects from them, but no fatigue.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and will it get better??

SUPPORT REQUEST Feeling like I’m high on Prozac — anyone else experienced this?

Hi! I’m a 30-year-old woman. I’ve tried starting antidepressants several times, but I’ve never been able to get through the adjustment period. Instead, I’ve been using Eglonyl sulpiride for depressive episodes, and it works really well for me.

I’m now in my third week of taking Prozac (20 mg), and about 4–5 hours after taking my pill, I start feeling like I’ve taken MDMA.

No euphoria, though — just anxiety, feeling hot, blurry vision, and strange tingling sensations throughout my body.

Does this eventually go away? I haven’t noticed any positive effects from Prozac yet :( (I have a previous history of drug abuse as a teenager, started my panic attacks, never used again after that. Mb that’s why I’m so scared of this altered state of mind)

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences!

QUESTION Went off Prozac after 10 years

I was on Prozac for about 10 years at 40 mg. After having my first baby, going to therapy consistently, and feeling like I was finally in a good place with my anxiety, I decided to gradually taper off.
I’ve now been completely off Prozac for about 4–5 months. The first 2–3 months honestly weren’t too bad, but recently I’ve started experiencing some really strange physical sensations.
The best way I can describe it is a subtle dropping or sinking feeling in my chest, almost like that feeling you get when you’re about to fall off a cliff or when an elevator suddenly drops, except much less intense. I also experience an internal buzzing or vibrating sensation throughout my body, along with occasional lightheadedness. These feelings can come and go for hours, and they’re really difficult to explain.
Before anyone suggests getting checked out, I want to mention that I’ve dealt with pretty severe health anxiety in the past, which is why I originally started Prozac. I’m already in contact with my doctor and currently wearing a Zio heart monitor to see if these sensations are related to my heart rhythm.
I’m mainly curious whether anyone else who stopped Prozac after being on it for several years experienced anything similar, especially months after stopping. I was on it for such a long time that I’m wondering if my body could still be adjusting, even after 4–5 months.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s had a similar experience. Thank you!

IM NEW HERE! unexplained anger

hiyaa, i (F/30) have been taking 20mg since july after my doctor diagnosed with MADD. for a while i can’t cry properly, or at all, maybe two months. but then i think i could cry again since september, just not as bad as when i haven’t been on this med. i usually cannot stop crying until i fell asleep. but recently i felt so much anger…. the ones i felt before my period, now i feel like i’m PMSing all the time. i cannot seem to control them? like they just explod? esp with family, my mother, i cannot seem to reason with her and have nice pleasant conversations everything that comes out of her mouth pissed me off…. i hate it, i want to not feel so much anger. maybe i need to switch from prozac or up my dose?

QUESTION Is it weird to say I can like feel, a quarter of a depressive episode? Is that part of the prozac/depression or nah.

Been 6 weeks on this for Major Depression, and now all the quite shitty side effects have mellowed out, im feeling great, full new person practically which, is its own scary thing but eh. Anyways.

Few days ago I started to feel a depressive episode set on, but like it didnt fully? Like it was a quarter of the way there but stopped before the worst of it, and then went fully away after just 2 days (compared to, the weeks it used to stick around for).

And like idk, its weird, was also bloody scared the meds had stopped working, is this part of prozac/my depression or is it some complete other thing? Am I simply interoperating my body incorrectly?

I am also taking a very small amount of quetiapine at the same time, and have recently tried halfling my dose, so wondering if that has anything to do with it.

SUPPORT REQUEST Would you start Prozac 7 weeks before an international trip, or wait until after?

I was recently prescribed Prozac for anxiety, and I’m struggling to decide when to start taking it.

I have a long international trip coming up in about 7 weeks at the start of December, and I’m worried about dealing with side effects while traveling. I’ve read about people experiencing increased anxiety, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, and other(?!?) side effects when first starting SSRIs. I’m nervous about spending my trip feeling worse or not being able to enjoy myself. I’m also worried about not taking the medications and really struggling with my issues.

I mostly struggle with PMDD and extreme depression and anxiety before my period. I will also be getting my period at the start of my trip 😭

Secondly, I am supposed to begin student teaching in January, and I don’t want to be dealing with difficult side effects or medication adjustments during that transition either. It’s unpaid and I know that it will be a lot mentally.

At the same time, my anxiety has been getting way worse, and I know Prozac can take several weeks to start working. But my symptoms have become unmanageable and have impacted my life, ability to work, and ability to take care of the household. I also have really, reallly bad nightmares and random crying spells.

Would starting now would give me enough time to adjust and potentially feel better by the time I leave? Or would it be safer to wait until I’m back?

Would you start 7 weeks before traveling, or wait until afterward?

How long did your initial side effects last?

Did you experience increased anxiety when you first started?

Looking back, do you wish you had started sooner or waited for a less busy period?
