GENERAL HELP How should I best go about my new Tradescantia zebrina cuttings?

There’s half a grocery bag at least. All are really long (12+inches) so I’m wondering if I should cut them to be shorter?

I have done propagation for many of my other plants but I’ve never owned this one before so I’m looking for advice.

These were given to me by a neighbor I didn’t bald any plants from a store.

JUST SHOWING OFF A gift on a very bad day

Post image

I had an extremely bad day at work. I cried twice, once was during a meltdown on the salesfloor. My mental health is down the drain, and I'm actively concerning my manager and coworkers (and therapist).

Coworker gave me this in the middle of the shift. It's huge, so it'll probably prop. The flowers are light pink.

I haven't showered in four days. My mental health isn't good. I hope this plant can prop, for my own sake. Sorry if this is too heavy for this sub.

JUST SHOWING OFF New PR for time-til-root-appearance >:)

First time propping a tradescantia so maybe this is normal, but I got my first root at about 30 hours after rescue! This pic is from just now, about 2 days later.

Saturday morning, i happened upon a half-dead tradescantia and when I picked it up to take a look, a whole branch fell off that was clearly already broken and just placed back on top. I was running late for a whole day event so when I got back in my car i split the little branch in half, and then tore open a little plastic takeout fork pouch, took out the fork, poured some water in from my bottle to wet the napkin and stuck the two new ends in there. Mama was really really rough looking and I was skeptical they would just wither immediately. When I got home like 12 hours later I moved them to normal water jars and by the next night one of them had a little root. Today it’s doubled in length :’)

she’s so cute and I will nurture her like a baby bird fallen from its nest until spring LOL. I love to root for my little free plants (pun intended). just pure joy!!

They're placed in exactly the same space, potting medium, getting the same amount of sunlight and other conditions are also exactly the same...

Also came from the same parent plant iirc

Grapevine!

One day, as I walked to work, I saw a broken branch on a grapevine I pass on the path I usually take. It was outside a bar, and because it was about to die I took it home. How did I know it was grapes? Well I saw the grapes growing on the full plant (5m high btw) and google said it was a wine grape, ai and google images said it was a "Marbec variety"

Rules say no stealing, but it wasn't being sold and was going to die and be thrown out. No one would have been mad or missed it.

This was before autumn temps hit nyc, so far before dormancy. I put it in moist soil to try and root it, and kept a large glass jar over it to keep humidity and put it in an indoor tent, keeping it moist every one or two days with a spritz of water. Most of the leaves died off, except 2, and those are now being drained for nutrients by the main branch.

Anyway, they are growing new leaves from buds, and a single small root! It's doing well to be a full fledged plant! I just wanted to get some people to give me tips on growing it, as I hope to keep it for the long haul.

I am very happy with as someone with a black friggin thumb, who loves plants. I don't want this to die. I've kept more and more plants alive overtime, matching soil ph and nutrient levels.

I can post a picture if wanted.

Thanks!

NEED MORE SPACE 2 gallons of moss saved from the powerwasher. Not the slightest idea what I'm gonna do with it all.

Post image
246 Upvotes

The back patio of my parent's place always grows a ton of moss on the bricks every year, and every year all of it gets powerwashed off in the fall. Not my house so I can't argue about it much, but it was such a lovely and fuzzy green this year I went and scraped off a bunch before it was due to meet its end to the powerwasher.

Now I just need to figure out what to do with it. My carnivorous terrarium is already overgrown with moss and I only have so much space to make more mossariums.

How do I safely remove cactus pups?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have a large barrel cactus with several pups growing around the base. The main cactus has bloomed twice this year, but the pups haven’t bloomed yet. I’m planning to repot soon and want advice on how to safely remove the pups without damaging them. What’s the best method for separating them, and what steps should I follow afterward to make sure both the mother plant and the pups stay healthy?

After a period of not watering, my monstera lost some leaves and was bare vine in some parts, so today I finally propped the bare bits and hopefully will have a nice, lush plant soon!

I bought this doohickey (the cool plant who's name I don't know) from a local plant seller. She let me have the random leaves that were already in the pot. I didn't expect every single one to prop, I barely even registered they were in there. I just wanted the cool plant.

Probably a long shot, but does anyone know what these props are? They are notably Yellow.

PROP-GRESS The succulent props I try for fail, and those I forget about thrive

Had forgotten about these succulent leaves from weeks ago left on my computer desk and discovered them growing roots and a baby today, yet those I put in perlite or sand/soil take 6+ months to make any moves, if they don’t die in the meantime 🤷🏻‍♀️

All rules about caring for succulent cuttings / props seem to not apply in SoCal…

Ok title is exaggerating but at least ime Southern California seems to be a magic place where almost all succulent care advice is overkill for the average plant..

In early days getting into the hobby I agonized over following every best practice…but over the years i’ve found nothing here makes all that much difference.

These days I don’t wait for cuttings to callous..doesn’t really matter if I water at night or day…spray from above or roots…50% perlite & grit or 30%..they all seem to thrive regardless

The only issue i’ve ever worried about is excess sun

I’ve ignored some plants for years with barely any water and they soldier on or spring right back when I find time to give them some tlc

I just found a rogue burros tail that must’ve fell in a half empty pot behind my shed years ago that self propagated into a glorious overflowing plant

i’m sure if I was doing this professionally or trying to grow the perfect specimen i’d see it differently… but at least for my needs I find “set it and forget it” to be a perfectly successful approach around this region

How many cuttings could I make from this? I’m a beginner!!

Post image
34 Upvotes

A friend is chopping and propping and she gave me this (the pothos is HUGE). Frankly I was too embarrassed to ask how to cut this. I see lots of nodes I’m just not sure exactly where to cut it

Edited for accuracy

Update: I did 3! I cut it so that 2 pieces piece had 2 nodes, and the piece that had 1 leaf and 1 leaf uncurling would have 1 node because it had the “advantage” of another leaf. Not sure if the logic was very sound but we will see

What if I made a table of props on the sidewalk and let people take them as they walked by

As the caption suggests. I realized I could do something with all the props I'm amassing. I live in a neighborhood where people walk just to walk. Especially if the weather is nice, people will be everywhere.

What if I set up a little table in my driveway and just set the props out? I wouldn't charge for them since they'd just be leaves with roots or a baby on it. Maybe I could put a jar and say tips are optional. I could put some balloons on the table to get people's attention.

It would be a fun social expriememt too, just to see how many props are left at the end of the day, and if anyone actually left me any money. Set up a shade for the props so they don't cook in the sun, go to work, then come back and see what's left for me.

.. Nice idea? I'm kinda into it. Really into it, actually.

NEED MORE SPACE Kalanchoe salad

Post image
23 Upvotes

I culled ALL the Kalanchoe at work today so they fit the standard of "gift ready." This standard includes having no bruised leaves, torn leaves, otherwise damaged leaves, dropping flowers, and dead stuff.

For anyone who saw the previous post, I did leave the one Kalanchoe alone besides taking some damaged leaves. I'll give it one more day to pop back up.

I don't need all these. I don't even know which leaves are which anymore 😭 if they start rooting, I'll just give them to people. I started just leaving leaves in the dirt anyway because I was accumulating so many.

Hopefully the new air flow helps the plants dry out better, they've been wet and heavy for awhile.

PERMISSION? Moral dilemma of complying with corporate

Post image
86 Upvotes

These guys showed up today. As you can probably see, they're droopy as hell. I'm not sure why, it could've been anything from bad genes, bad truck journey, or the plant just hating the store. All of them with this coloration are like this.

The store policy is that if something isn't "gift ready", we have to clearance or chop the bad parts. This plant isn't in that standard, cause it looks sad. But.

I really like this one. He's beautiful and bright, and the leaves are unique to Kalanchoe. But I also can't bring myself to cut him and take a piece if he's not actually breaking them off. All the pieces are firm and connected, just.. Droopy.

This is the moral dilemma I face. I'm going to come back tomorrow and see how they look, it they've gotten any better. If they haven't.. I think policy is going to force me to clearance or cut.

If I do have to cut.. Would I be allowed to take a piece? Is that alright? Or should I keep my paws off? I genuinely am asking and need an outside pov. Thank you for reading and listening 💚

Edit: I'm getting really mixed messages with the comments and up vote downvote ratio 😶

Kalanchoe rosette

Post image

Yall have probably seen me in other posts just farming this specific plant. Light pink rosette Kalanchoe. It's genuinely not on purpose it just drops stems like it's hot.

Is it because it the Kalanchoe type? I assumed this type is a hybrid or a mutation or something, and the normal one is the "classic"? I genuinely don't know why these drop so much and I'm kinda baffled at this point

SUCC-ESS Took me too long to find Mr Fluffy, a plush agave

Post image
20 Upvotes

It took me the better part of a year, I ended up telling myself if I found one, I would be pulling it out and kidnapping it no excuses except for directly inside of someone’s garden, well I did just that taking it from just barely outside someone’s garden in front of a fence which is public (bird likely shat it out there) and now I have a fluffy plant I can’t stop touching (if it was a person, it’d definitely report me), I also have some hedge woundwort growing which is also fuzzy but at the moment, it’s still too delicate for pets.

Mullein is native to the UK so it was sad to see them slowly disappear from local areas and parks since as a kid I would touch them all the time, I bet it’s due to misinformed people cutting them down as they see them since in the US, they are extremely invasive with extreme measures taken against them, this one I will grow to collect seeds, put them in the shared fruit field (plum trees, brambles and apple trees that foragers use for making jams) to farm more seeds and then absolutely crop dust the ever loving hell out of the nature reserve with them, they are planting non native stuff instead of natives so I have no regrets destroying it with plush agaves.

The last stand

I've been trying for a while to propagate a rose cutting I found. Apparently, rose cuttings are notorious for not growing at all, even in sugar water, unless you add some sort of root stimulant.
Google said that corn has auxins, so I crumbled up a tortilla and put it in the water as a root stimulant. It did nothing (wow...).
I also read that pothos could help, so I found a plant that looked like pothos and put it in the cup, but it turned out to be periwinkle. The rose still didn't root.
For my most recent effort, I trimmed off all of the rose that hadn't gone moldy and put it in sugar water with a drop of bleach, which some people said would prevent mold. Instead, mold just grew on the above-water part.

And now I have about a centimeter of greenish stalk left, and I want to try a Charge of the Light Brigade on it for the slightest chance it might sprout. I'm not sure if I should leave the submerged part on, which might have traces of mold or bleach, or cut it off.

I have aloe vera at home, and Google says aloe also has auxins. Would aloe work as a root stimulant? Also, is there any anti-mold stuff I can use that doesn't harm the plant, or should I just change the water daily? Finally, should I use sugar water or just regular water? Any help would be appreciated.
