Mod Post We built a new free home theater calculator suite and need testers [beta]

Hey all, Brian from ProjectorScreen.com here. We've been building a new set of free calculators and tools and they're ready for people to try out and tear apart (roast away!):

https://www.projectorscreen.com/pages/home-theater-projector-calculators

You enter your room once (screen size, aspect ratio, seat distance) and every tool uses it:

  • Seat view: a 3D view from your seat, with SMPTE 30°, THX 40° and IMAX 55° sizes drawn on the wall
  • Screen size, viewing distance and "compare sizes" (your current TV vs. the screen you're eyeing, to scale)
  • Brightness: ftL/nits for your projector, screen gain and room light, including what room light does to the picture
  • Throw distance and lens shift
  • Compare projectors: black levels and brightness side by side, using measured contrast where we have it
  • Unit conversions

No signup needed. It runs in your browser.

Fair warning: this is a work in progress and a proof of concept. We're still compiling the projector database, so not every model is in yet, and some specs and measurements are still being verified. Treat the numbers as a starting point.

How to leave feedback: click "Make a suggestion" at the bottom left, then click any part of the page (a slider, a number, the 3D view) and type your note. You can pin as many as you want, then send them all at once. Put your Reddit handle in the name box so I know who to credit and follow up with.

I'm especially interested in:

  1. Anything that's wrong or confusing, including specs you know are off for a projector you own
  2. Tools or features you'd want added. What calculator do you wish existed?

You can also just reply here. Thanks for helping make it better!

Discussion Anyone ordered an IRIS recently? How long did shipping take?

The Iris series is listed as shipping this week, so I’m considering going ahead with one. Was looking at the horizon 30 too, but its preorder terms say estimated shipping in mid November, plus delivery time after that. Got a few days off next month and was hoping to get everything set up then. Just not sure if this Iris batch is for preorders or if new orders are going out too. Anyone ordered in the last few days and got a tracking number yet?

Discussion XGIMI Horizon Ultra

Could someone explain why the price of the XGIMI HORIZON Ultra has increased so significantly in Germany recently?

Just a few weeks ago, it was possible to buy this projector for around €1,000, whereas the cheapest price I can find now is approximately €1,400.

Is there a chance that the price will drop again soon? Also, would it be worth waiting until Black Friday to see if a better deal becomes available?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Troubleshooting Elfin Flip 4K DBLE not staying on? Bug or feature?

TL:DR - DBLE won’t stay on after reboots

I’ve had the XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K for about two weeks and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Just to preface this,

- Software is 100% up to date
- Laser level is at 10 always
- DBLE is toggled on

I’ve had this issue ever since I’ve turned on the projector and I’m wondering if it’s supposed to be like this or not. So, I have DBLE turned on and when I turn off my projector and restart it, DBLE is mysteriously toggled off. Is this a bug or a feature. If bug, does anyone else have this problem?

Discussion looking for simple short/ultra short throw for casual gaming and entertainment

Hi, I'm just looking to get a projector that I can just put on top of my console, right up against the wall with maybe a foot of distance, and play games or shows from HDMI or AV inputs. I'll project right on the bare wall. I don't know anything at all about them so I wanted to ask around about some good names I could look for on ebay. Maybe something I could eventually mount to the ceiling instead if I prefer to. Thanks.

Setup Design Suggestions Need help knowing if this is possible.

Hi all, I have a lofty ambition that I have no idea if it’s worth my time pursuing or not. I want to project waves onto a sheet cake for a party, exactly like the link above.

I’ve heard of projection mapping while trying to figure this out, do you think this is necessary?
I’d love to know if this is possible with a simple setup. If you have any projector recommendations that are also good to travel with I’d greatly appreciate hearing.

Thanks!

Completed Setup ISO recs for outdoor movie set-up

Hello redditors. I am hoping to host a backyard movie night on Halloween. I started researching projector and screen options and realize there are too many variables so I am seeking advice from those who have been there already. Budget is less of an issue. Priorities include good image quality/contrast and easy set-up + it has to get here in time to test it out before next weekend. So that might leave me with only Amazon options. Also, what speakers are you using? Are there other issues I haven't thought of?

Troubleshooting LG HU80SW Vertical stripes

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

A few years ago, I got an LG HU80SW with the infamous blue screen of death (dead mainboard). I bought two replacement mainboards from compatible TVs.

The projector now powers on and works, but there are vertical stripes, only a few pixels wide, appearing in the wrong positions. The issue occurs with both mainboards.

I haven't been able to find a replacement PCB that drives the DMD chip, and I don't want to buy a new DMD chip without being sure that it will solve the problem.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and managed to fix it? Or does anyone know what might be causing it and how to solve it?

Thanks in advance!

Greetings from Germany!

Discussion El cheapo all the way.

I have been a projector fan since 2000. The days when Barco, Sony and JVC ruled. These days it seems, especially here, the cheaper the better. Lots of folks don’t even use a screen. Where is the commitment and love for watching a movie using a properly calibrated system? I understand money can be an issue but you can buy a three year old with 300 hours projector for the price of a UST who will be outdated next month? I bought a proper Stewart screen 20 years ago and it still rocks. My question is, where is da love for projection = movies?

Discussion Any other Optoma Photon Go owners in here?

Post image

I got mine for a very good price brand new at $650 CAD and I don't know there's something about this little guy that just makes me appreciate it so much. The colors are vivid, the contrast is surprisingly good, and the size of the unit is just great. My main gripe is the buzzing noise which I assume is either the fans or the DLP shifting due to non existent sound dampening. Just wanted to post an appreciation of this awesome little unit (it isn't my main projector), I have it by my desk projecting onto what seems like a flat wall haha, no keystoning. My main projector is a Horizon 20 max and I also own a pk31 as my portable 4k unit with a fire stick max hooked up to it.

Discussion 3000/7000 lumens Chinese projectors with the best blacks

Hi everyone, I'm looking for projectors with the best possible black levels for an immersive installation.

I'd like to try to save money, so I'm also considering Chinese brands like Flyin or SMX (or others). Could you tell me about models between roughly 3,000 and 7,000 lumens, preferably laser and Full HD or similar, with very deep blacks and high contrast?

Thanks!

Buying Advice Wanted NON-smart portable projector recommendations

Hi, my projector recently broke, and I’m having trouble finding one to replace it. My previous one was the Acer C250i DLP. I’m looking for something that at least meets the specs of this one. I mostly use it to watch TV, but occasionally use it for art as well (tracing images) so I need it to be fairly lightweight and movable. I’d also like it to be durable - my previous one had a supposed lifespan of 20,000 hours, but it died well before reaching even half of that.

My requirements are:
• NOT a smart projector - no Google TV *
• Will project onto the ceiling - I mostly watch lying in bed staring directly at the ceiling
• Adjustable angles
• Portable
• 1080p
• Bluetooth speaker compatible
• Integrated battery (so it doesn’t have to be plugged in to work)
• At least 300 lumens
• Screen mirroring (or some sort of ability to connect to a phone)
• Ability to plug-in cables whilst projecting
• Previous one had screen size of 29” ~ 100 “, throw ratio of 1.2
• Pricewise, preferably below £600

* the main reason I don’t want Google TV is I’ve heard it will update itself without asking and this sounds really irritating - I just want to be able to turn on my projector, connect it to my input, and watch without any hassle!

Thank you in advance

Edit: added screen size

Completed Setup Mounting tip

Just a quick question. My projector has a beam of white light like a trapezoid off the lens when it's on hitting the ceiling. Is that an indication that I have it too close to the ceiling? Should I be dropping it a little lower?

Discussion Anyone considering the new XGIMI AURA 3? What are your thoughts?

I've been following the new XGIMI AURA 3 series and am curious what people here think about it.

For anyone considering a new UST projector, what matters most to you: brightness, gaming performance, picture quality in a room with some ambient light, or the overall setup?

I'm also curious how many people would pair a projector like this with a dedicated ALR screen rather than projecting onto a white wall.

Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who already use a UST projector.

Completed Setup Ventilation on horizon 20 & 30 models

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I preordered the horizon 30 pro and I would like to install it on my floating shelves above my couch ( the shelves have no risk of falling, it’s fixed with special screws and wall plug on a concrete wall) but the shelves is 28centimeters/11inches in depth and the projector is 19cm/7,5inches in depth. I saw that it’s best to leave at least 10-15cm/4-6inches behind the projector for the ventilation to be effective. My setup would left 9cm/3,5inches max of spaces between the projector and the wall. Do you think it will be an issue? I’ve taken a pictures of what it would look like in a store who had the horizon 20 to illustrate.

Thanks

Discussion AURA 3 Max + Ascend UST — center channel with an AVR?

Post AI-assisted but all me:

I'm seriously considering backing the AURA 3 Max + 120" Ascend UST bundle, but I'm struggling to find detailed technical specifications, particularly for the Ascend.

I already have a dedicated Dolby Atmos home theater system with a Denon AVR-X3700H, Klipsch front speakers, surround speakers, overhead Atmos speakers, and a subwoofer.

Both the AURA 3 Max projector (80W) and Ascend screen (170W) have integrated Harman Kardon audio systems. I'd actually love to use one of them to replace my existing center-channel speaker, but I have no interest in giving up the rest of my surround system.

A few questions, hopefully for someone at XGIMI:

Audio integration:

  1. Can either the AURA 3 Max or the Ascend's Harman Kardon speakers function as a dedicated center channel, receiving a discrete audio signal from an AVR?
  2. My Denon has a dedicated center-channel RCA pre-out. Does either XGIMI product have an analog audio input or another way to accept that signal?
  3. If supported, is there a fixed-volume or center-only mode that disables surround virtualization and allows the Denon to manage volume, delay, and Audyssey room correction?
  4. If neither supports this, can both integrated sound systems be completely disabled while the Denon handles all audio?

Ascend UST specifications:

  1. Are there complete technical specifications or a manual available for the 120" Ascend? I'm specifically looking for housing dimensions, depth, weight, deployed screen height, and the distance from the floor to the bottom of the image.
  2. What audio/video connections does the Ascend actually have? I haven't been able to find a port diagram anywhere.
  3. What are the dimensions and adjustment capabilities of the integrated projector platform? Does it retract into the housing?

I really like the concept of a clean, integrated floor-rising screen and UST projector, but at $4,999 for the bundle, I'd like to understand how it works with an existing home theater before committing.

Would really appreciate an official response from XGIMI, especially regarding center-channel functionality and the missing Ascend specifications.

Hi, I have a Dangbei N3 max device and the volume on headphone out is very low. It’s kind of usable but on a 100 % is very low. Also some of the Bluetooth devices also can’t reach higher than moderate volume. Any users here to compare?
