NO ADVERTISING IS ALLOWED OF ANY KIND (including solicitation)! Advertising = Instant ban

But why? I have a great app that would help people!!

So does EVERYONE else. We remove greater than FIFTY PERCENT of comments on certain threads due to advertising. Nobody wants to read a subreddit where half the comments are undisclosed ads for brand new apps.

Don't worry, I've clearly disclosed I'm the owner of the app!

It doesn't matter. People don't want to be advertised to all day, even if they know it's an ad. We want real human discussion on /r/productivity.

I can't even ask people what kind of product or app they want built? I haven't even linked to anything!

You cannot! This isn't your free focus group or your free beta test recruitment page.

But all I've done is mention the mere fact that I have an app in the first place!

We've seen the big threads on the SaaS and marketing subreddits that recommend doing this. You're not being slick. And no, you can't even have the name of your app or product in your username - we're that serious about keeping this place free of advertisement, sorry. Reddit accounts are free, please create a new one with a regular name!

Can I at least wait until my post has gained traction, and then sneakily edit a link in afterwards?

You sure can, but we've set up filters to start blocking this now and you'll be permanently banned.

How is anyone supposed to get their app off the ground, anyway?!

We recommend - if you truly believe in your product - Purchasing reddit ads or some other type of marked advertisement (we're just mods, we don't care if you buy them on reddit or not). You can even target /r/productivity with your paid ad!

Question I'm pretty slow and would like advice on being smarter?

I have issues with understanding what people are saying, generally It feels like I'm listening to someone but it's just not clicking at all. I'll usually ask questions for clarification but even then, I'm still quite lost.

I'd like to manage my focus and attention span much better when it comes to talking to people, going to classes, watching videos and film. I feel like i'm not on par with many of my peers and feel severely behind.

Advice Needed How to stop daydreaming when you need to study?

My exam is coming in two weeks, and i have been consistently scoring bad in the last three. I don't know why, but only this year I can't seem to focus on anything.

It's my last year of school, and I'm waiting to get into college, and consistently think about what I'll be able to do there, even though I hhave to start studying to actually get into any college

I tried using white noise, but I can only use it for half an hour, after that I feel so satisfied that i start dreaming again and don't realize the time has passed by

Question How do I focus when doing creative work?

I feel like when there’s a linear task or a clear goal put in front of me (ex a puzzle or a program that has to do a specific thing) I can sit down for a couple of hours and knock it out. The same applies to note taking and learning without application, even when it pertains to the creative fields. However, when it comes time to do creative work and learning forms of expression like drawing, music, etc., I can’t seem to help but get distracted easily.

Keep in mind I am a noob in a lot of the creative work I want to learn, but I think I’ve mentally accepted already that I have to make bad things to get good at the skill. How come I can’t actually execute when I know I want to create things?

Technique A single task rule borrowed from Marcus Aurelius, and where it stops working

The rule: before you start work, name the one thing in front of you and treat everything else as parked until this block ends. When something else pops into your head, write it on a list and go back. That is the whole technique. The source is a line in Meditations, book two, where Marcus tells himself to concentrate every minute on doing what is in front of him with precise and genuine seriousness, and to free himself from all other distractions. The wording here follows the Gregory Hays translation. The list does the heavy lifting, since a lot of task switching comes from the worry of forgetting something. Where it stops working is jobs built on interruptions, like support or anything with a constant inbox. There the blocks have to be shorter and the parked list needs a scheduled time to be cleared, otherwise it just becomes a second inbox.

Advice Needed Using a planner, Google Calendar, or Notion: Help!

Hi all, like a lot of people scrolling this sub, I too want to get better at living a productive lifestyle and staying on top of deadlines. Like the title indicates, I have thoroughly tried all those organizations methods and more! Frankly, I quite like all of them, especially my paper planner, google calendar, and notion. Now, I'm just confused on how to incorporate all of them together to produce an effective outcome.

I'm trying to figure out a way wherein I can use all of these tools to organize different aspects of my life. I am a full-time student who has volunteering and work, so most of my time is taken up by studying or clubs/extracurriculars/work.

Currently I use my Muji planner to have a more "weekly to-do list" where I can physically check things off. I also use the calendar in this to map out important life/school events or meet-ups with my friends, and I tend to also journal in it.

I had a big Notion phase, where I used it for a long time for almost every aspect of my life, but eventually kind of got bored with it. Now, I only really use it to plan my future, track long-term deadlines, and to take typed notes if my classes call for it. I want to use Notion more, but I am unsure how to reincorporate it.

As for Google Calendar, I had a really big phase with as well, before getting the planner. For this, I tracked basic deadlines and also what I had booked in terms of meetings/deadlines, usually on a weekly basis.

Now, my problem is that I truly enjoy using all of these tools, but I am just unsure on how to use them all together cohesively, especially because there is a lot of overlap. I know I could probably get rid of one, but I usually find myself missing it haha. If anyone has any suggestions on howy to apply these together, I am all ears! I wish one singular app had everything these three have, then it would be perfect for me...

TLDR; What is a cohesive way to incorporate a paper planner, google calendar, and notion all together? Any advice from someone who's done this? Should I just suck it up and drop one of them?

Thanks for reading if you made it this far!

Advice Needed How do I cope with being interrupted and needing to switch tasks at a moment's notice?

Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit for this.

My job requires me to drop everything at a moment's notice to do anything from a minor task to an all-day project. It's been frustrating me for years, but I can't afford to get a different job and it's something I deal with in everyday life as well. I shouldn't get as angry as I do, and I'm not sure how to deal with that.

How do I compose myself within a short amount of time and deal with the overwhelming feeling that I'm being disrespected when I know I'm not?

Advice Needed how do i train myself to work in the afternoons

context: i’m f20 and a sophomore in college. i found that i work way better in the morning right after i wake up and do my morning routine. this is probably because i haven’t had too much stimuli like my phone, outside, etc.

however, all days of my classes this semester start at 8:30 and i have a 45-min commute from my dorm to uni. with that, my study schedule has been so off. it’s already the midterms season and my body is literally fighting thru it. i can only function through all nighters and coffee now.

i’ve tried to push my work back to the afternoons, but i don’t get a lot done. mostly because i’m feeling too mentally tired after/between my classes to get any work done.

what should i do? the way i see it is i should be forcing myself to work thru the afternoon but i really don’t get a lot done.

Question [Discipline, routine] How to get on an "Work mindset"

I am very young, and work on my artistic projects after school and work(i generally get home from those at 5 PM ) and generally, stuff doesnt flow.
I believe that happens because when i was pretty young, my routine was getting of school, watch something on TV for 1 hour, and the rest on playing games on PC(it was like, 3 to 4 hours playing the same game, crazy.), and i started working on these games, animation and things like that due to seeing them on videos i watched, and wanting to do my own. So, i kind of believe, im still on that mindset of ''Is just entretaiment and stimulation", and i still get stimulation for getting excited for seeign my animation and code coming togheter, so i really think im guided through pleasure and stimulation from work, and when that dopamine from that fresh project i started stops, i start procastinating, and trying watch videos and listen to music while "working" and all that. So overall, there's no discipline and stable productivity rate as i work.
How to grow discipline for that?

Technique I just worked for 7 hours and got nothing done.

Problem:

  • Its so easy to get lost in the bottomless pit of “working” for hours and accomplishing nothing. Heres how to make sure that doesn’t happen again:

Solution:

  1. Have a task to work on
  • I don’t mean a vague list of tasks that you made brain dumping everything into a notion database or a note sheet, and when its time to pick one it says “work on marketing”. No, you need a SPECIFIC task to work on…
  • chances are you’re not gonna be able to make more than 3 at a time, and even that will require a lot of mental energy, so max I like to have 1-3 on my “to-do” list.
    • ex: instead of “go to market” do “go to whole foods, get whole milk, ground turkey, protein powder, blueberries.”
    • Make it so all you have to do is execute.
  1. EVERY 30ISH MINS MAKE SURE YOU WERE ON TASK
  • Yes its all caps cause I’m yelling at you.
  • This will change your life. I got this advice from Alex Hormozi and upon implementation my productivity skyrocketed.
  • He says every 15 mins but i find the sweet spot for me to be around 30.
  • In the notes portion of the calendar block you created just write what you did for that portion of time
    • Ex: 9:00-9:30: Wrote 2 paragraphs for my essay. Fully locked in, not distracted.
    • 9:30-10:00: Wrote 1 more paragraph, bit less focused, picked up my phone once.
    • 10:00-10:30: Wrote 3 paragraphs, ya boi is locked in.

If you can build a habit out of these 2 techniques your productivity will improve i promise you.

Question How do I know if I really want to take a new hobby or not?

Context:
I’m a woman in my late twenties, rebuilding my life from scratch. I have a part-time job, but it doesn’t pay me enough. I’m planning to switch to an industry in which I already have a little experience. It’s going to be really tough because of my age and lack of experience.
I live with my parents, which is common in my country. I contribute to some of the household bills every month without fail, as well as to any additional family expenses. I’m able to get by because my parents cover most of the household expenses. However, I need to earn more money to become financially independent and be able to support my parents if they ever face an emergency. I also need to start a degree soon.

Problem:
After experiencing a lot of ups and downs in my career, I slowed down a lot last year. That’s why I decided to take a low paying part time job until I’m ready to give my best again.

During the last two weeks of September, however, I found myself being more productive than ever. But I also noticed that I was becoming overconfident and taking on more than I could handle, while also planning to pick up some new hobbies.

One of these hobbies is coloring. I randomly joined r/coloring on Reddit, and looking at all the beautiful images people share there makes me want to try coloring, too. But I know that if I tried it, my coloring work would probably end up looking like something a 5 year old had done, lol. I also realize that learning to color well takes a lot of time and patience, starting with the basics.

On one hand, I know I need to practise the skills that will help me build the career I’m aiming for.

On the other hand, I feel drawn to learning how to color, even though I don’t know whether I have the time or energy for it.

I’ve also found myself wanting to pursue other things as my capacity seemed to increase during those two weeks. I’m not sure whether these desires reflect genuine interests or are just impulses.

My question is:

How do I figure out whether learning to color is something I genuinely want to do or is it just an impulse?

Is this something that I can figure out only if I act on it?

I’d love to hear about your personal experiences with something similar.

Also, my productivity has dropped to almost zero over the past week.

I usually do some journaling when I face roadblocks like this. But this time I wanted to learn from other people’s personal experiences.

Thank you in advance 🙏😌

Question What's your hack to beat the afternoon slump, especially when you still have pile of tasks in your to-do?

This afternoon crash is sooo embarrassing. Every time I still have a bunch of tasks on my daily to-do list, I struggle not to push my keyboard down with my face.

I tried lots of stuff: another coffee (actually, that was years ago, now I don't), exercise (not for me, as my energy level refuses to do a good workout), breathing (well, that actually helps), listening to guided meditation (it is good, but I still can't figure out how to practice being at the office), a walk (works!), and a power nap (same as guided meditation - it's just impossible in the office).

Let's talk about your hacks!

Personally I love having my own space and quietness. Open concepts are hard to focus with just too many distractions.

Technique Timeblocking is the most important productivity habit.

The ability to pick one thing for an extended period of time is the hardest yet most rewarding thing you have to do in order to be successful.

In the macro you have to choose what you're going to pursue in life and you've got to choose ONE thing which means you’re not choosing EVERYTHING else. Super, super fucking hard.

In the micro, the same rule applies, all day, everyday… you can either choose ONE thing to work on for the next four hours, (TIMEBLOCKING!) or you can choose nothing and get nothing done. or you can choose 16 things and also get nothing done. but instead if you choose ONE thing (ex: for the next four hours I’m gonna work on my business, or I’m gonna practice piano, or I'm gonna go to the gym, etc.) this is how you actually make progress, you chose one thing, which means you said no to everything else and DECIDED. you must fucking decide. Make a choice and don’t look back, with the small decisions you make everyday, like what am i gonna do for the next 90 minutes, and for the big decisions like what am i gonna do with my life… The pain comes from staying undecided.

Advice Needed Nothing is interesting to me except being on my phone

Is this normal? Does anyone have any tips/advice of things i can do? If I have nothing scheduled I just spend the whole day scrolling on my phone and everything else takes so much effort and energy. Some days I don’t do anything else. I also have ADHD and OCD which impacts my productivity most of the time but I just don’t know where to start.

Question After work schedule. To-do list on my way home. Anyone tried it?

Basically as the title says. However I can add some more detail:

I am a service engineer and often I get home late, around 7pm. For now I can commute by train but I will have times when I commute by car. Depends on the customer site.

I really want to get on with my personal life and for this to work I need to fit in time for my goals. So today I had an idea to write my to-do list on my way home. On the ocasions when I drive I will write my do-do list on my lunch break.

I am curious if any of you tried this and if you have any tips that helped.

I want to fit in courses, dancing, boxing and counselling into my schedule. 2-3 of weekdays would have boxing after work. The rest would be coursework and dancing. Counselling would be every 2 weeks 50 minutes a day.

I will ocasionalluly work from home to do admin etc so that day its pretty straightforward.

Question Staying awake if I don’t like caffeine or fizzy drinks?

A bit more of a simple question. But I truly don’t know what to do, I’m going to an event next week which will include me staying up late, and waking up quite early for a week straight.

Plus I currently have mid-terms so my sleep schedule is quite wrecked already. Wrecked is a strong word, it’s more like 5 hours of sleep a night- but I’m the kinda person who needs 8 to function.

The thing is I hate the taste of coffee/tea and I dont like fizzy drinks either. What do I do? Are there any drinks out there that will keep me awake lol- I feel like a zombie

Question What is the best note taking app?

I’m a law student and want to find the best note-taking app for notes that are both aesthetically pleasing AND well organised, preferably for laptop over tablet.

Can anyone suggest any? I especially like when I can have one big “binder” per module that is separated per topic.

Question Consistent hours or consistent wakeup time

I have a very busy and varying university schedule due to classes, social life, study etc. I have a terrible habit of staying up post 12 am while at the same time my best workout time is in the morning etc.

I wanted to know if it's better for me to schedule the alarm based on my sleep time (for example timer of 7hrs) or to wakeup at a consistent time ( 6am) inspite of sleep time.

I also really wanna have a morning and night routine but this is very overwhelming since I feel extremely sleepy after classes ie. Evening or during noon, midday.
