Discussion The truth about printer subscription programs and many misconceptions about them

Dear all,

I work in the printer industry. For a very well-known consumer products manufacturer that gets discussed on this sub a lot.  I will not disclose which manufacturer I work for, nor will I disclose any manufacturer I do not work for (since the industry is relatively small eliminating 1 or 2 will make it generally too obvious as to which I do work for) as I am not officially speaking on behalf of the company. But, I want to set the record straight on subscription programs because some of you are drastically misinformed and it is very frustrating to see as someone who understands these programs as well as basic logic.

There are two types of subscription programs. Each of the major consumer manufacturers offers at least 1 of these programs, some offer both.

The first type of program is an auto-reordering program. The printer can tell (via various ways depending on each manufacturer) when the ink / toner is low and when it hits a certain point that will trigger an order of the ink/toner that device uses. Most manufactures that offer this will first send you an email letting you know that an order has been triggered and it will allow you to skip the delivery of the consumable and thus not get charged. If you allow the order to go through you are purchasing that consumable. That consumable is yours, you own it, just as if you walked into a Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, or bought it on Amazon… You can cancel the “subscription” the next day and continue to use that consumable until it is empty.

The second type of program is a true subscription program. **THIS** is what many of you are vastly misinformed and / or are irrational about. In this program *you are not purchasing a consumable* at all. You are paying the manufacturer for X number of pages per month. The manufacturer will send you a consumable to use because the printer needs ink / toner to work but, that is not what you are paying for. You are paying the manufacturer $Y per month to print up to X pages per month.. that’s it. Of course you can print over that X number and pay an overage (just like years ago with cell phones).. and of course, you can print under that X number and some pages will roll-over to future months (just like years ago with cell phones). The owner of the consumable is the manufacturer. You never bought it, you never owned it. Therefore, it is not yours to use after you end the subscription! The only reason most manufactures do not ask for it back is because they don’t want to pay for shipping it back to them. But, they still own it… not you.  You can think of this like renting an apartment. You are paying a landlord $X per month to live in their building. The landlord is providing the building for you to live in while you are paying rent. You do not own the building. and when you stop paying rent you are no longer allowed to continue living in the building. Just like your Netflix subscription, Apple TV subscription and Disney+ subscription.. when you stop paying for the subscription, you stop getting to use the service. Just because while you were paying you had access to the content does not mean you at any time owned that content and get to continue watching it once you stop paying the subscription.

I truly hope this helps clarify somethings for some of you. Others I understand are lost causes but, I will do my best to answer any questions I can.

Purchasing DIY greeting cards

Looking to make our own greeting cards in color. Probably want to go up to 80 lb cover cardstock. Aren’t a lot of options in a home office price range. And it’s frustrating not being able to test one out to see how the cards would turn out. Anyone have experience with this, or suggestions please? Thanks.

Purchasing Glad I bought a laser printer

In March, I bought a Brother L2320D, mainly to print lines and dots for notebooks. I spent a long time researching whether to buy a laser printer or an inkjet, but after several months, I'm grateful I bought the laser one because it's been about 3 months since the last time I printed.

I bought that specific model because in my country the newer one was quite a bit more expensive, and I couldn't find toner at a reasonable price for it—that's why I went with this one.

Discussion Is Epson L8050 worth it?

• Upvotes

Hi,
Is epson l8050 a good printer for a photo key chain printing business? Today we printed some pictures using L8050 but wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. I shared images via whatsapp and used it on a canvas template. The paper which it was printed on was from the Brand Akruti. Please guide us on how we have better quality prints.

Troubleshooting Surecolor t3270

Hey folks I have a t3270 used for printing screen printing films. It's been great since new, had it only about 5 years.

I installed a new roll of film today and now I get an error message basically cannot detect paper. Asks me to remove and reinstall.

Wondering if people have any experience with this error and if there are sensors I should be looking for to clean or replace.

A few things I tried already before the suggestions come in:

Tried a different roll of film

Tried a roll of paper

Tried unplugging and plugging back in

Tried factory settings

Tried different paper settings

Tried compressed air

Tried paper towel through the paper pathway

Purchasing What DPI is Necessary for a High Quality Black and White Copy (not from printer)

I’m looking to buy a high quality laser copier for black and white images. I see many black and white copiers offer 600x600 dpi. Is that a high enough resolution for a crisp print of text and line images? Thank you!

Troubleshooting Brother hll2400dwe not printing double sided

Bought 2 sided printer in 2024. Changed the toner a couple of days ago and now getting message 'Jam 2-sided Pull out the 2-sided tray at the back of the machine and remove the jammed paper'. There is no jammed paper in tray 2 (or anywhere else) but the paper will not catch to print on reverse. Also the doobree (technical term) on the left hand side is wobbling oddly. Anyone got any ideas?

It's an off brand toner, but have used before with no trouble. Have also opened a new pack of paper in case it had got damp, but the printer is still sulking.

Troubleshooting Brother L3240CDW issue

Post image
1 Upvotes

95% of paper gets stuck in the back of my printer, crumbled against the rollers.
I notice the four guiding rollers have a white pattern and are deformed: I guess that’s not normal.
Is there a consumable part I need to buy or should I just toss the printer after just 6000 pages?

)? Aktuelle Firmware 1.6 wurde installiert. Danke vorab.

Purchasing Looking for a new printer

Hello,

We are looking for a new printer for family use (only two of us are using it, a student and a professor).
Our current printer, an Epson XP-4105 Expression Home, is giving up on us. Plus, we are very disappointed because we have had a lot of issues with it: the ink cartridges are way too expensive for how long they last (we have to change them every month), the print quality is deteriorating over time, and the printer only connects to the Wfi after a while.
We have heard about laser printers, but we don’t know if they are cost-effective in the long run. We want a printer that can also scan documents, print in color, and handle double-side printing.

So, do you have any recommandations?

Thanks in advance

Discussion Canon G6020 priting error

I made a thread about inheriting this printer and and initially thought the ink or head was fubar but a deep ink flush seemed to have brought the printer back to life; however it sat for another 3 weeks or so since I resurrected it and now it's doing the same thing. Thankfully, another ink flush was the answer but as the printer's own caution states, it uses a lot of ink to accomplish this. Should I be printing a colour print once a week to avoid this from happening?

Discussion FAST printer for glossy sticker paper?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I have a small business selling stickers. Currently have an Epson et1810 which prints nice quality but is painfully slow! I have played around with settings but “high quality” and “glossy paper” is the best but takes 4-5min to print one a4 page.
Any printers that would print this faster at same or better quality? Thanks!

Purchasing Can’t decide on Label Printer

Hello Everyone,

I have a perfume oil manufacturing business and I have been using TSC TTP 244 Pro.

Now, I have run into some issues into it and need to buy a new one.

I have 3 possible options:

  1. TTP 244 Pro
  2. TL 240
  3. XA 220

Both 2nd and 3rd are fairly new but I’m getting mixed reviews for these including the maintenance and ribbon alignment post replacement along with some firmware issues.

So, I’m looking for an option on which one to go for and also, I’m based out of India to give you guys clear picture about the region for any repairs or anything else per say.

Looking forward to hear your opinions / suggestions

Troubleshooting Brother Color Laser HL-L8260CDW - vertical light colored line

Printer is 18 months old, 1,258 pages printed (95% of which was b/w text). I'm getting a faint white line about 2" from left margin, vertical. Images here are scans of my prints on plain white paper.

I tried: (0) the corona wire swipe-cleaning recommended by Brother; (1) replacing magenta toner; (2) replacing yellow toner; (3) carefully cleaning the drum/rollers; (4) carefully cleaning the LED light glass/windows. I even did the "drum dot print" and it shows that my drums are all clean.

No change, faint light band is still there.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. I can't afford to bring it in for repair, especially since the repair will likely cost close to the price of the printer. Thanks...

Troubleshooting How to get Brother printer to recognise ink?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a brother MFC-J497DW printer. it prints great with my off brand cartridge but it thinks the cartridge is empty even though it is half full. Any ideas on how to make it recognise there is still ink in there? I have tried covering parts of the cartridge with tape but I don't even know what part is the sensor? Any ideas?

Troubleshooting Kinda accidentally fixed MFC J4620DW but not? Help?

I recently made a post (https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/s/zEifpdr7Vs).

Quick summary to what I am at now:

Issue with the Brother MFC J4620DW ("paper jam front" even if there is no paper; error stays even without the paper thing being in the printer and only shows up after the printer checks it's status- so if I lift the lid and then connect it to electricity, the code won't show up until I close the lid and it can check everything. Yes there is really no paper and it can print - it did it when the paper jam error was gone for a while).

Well after many tries and errors it worked and printed well. Then it was disconnected from the electricity for two days and the issue was back again. I also don't know what exactly was the point that made it work again.

So I tried and tried and after maaaany tries (I even was in the maintenance menu) I tried another thing an AI suggested: disconnecting the printer from the electricity and then connecting it again while pressing down the left side of the printer. And suprise: it worked. The error "paper jam front" was gone. And then it came back.

So I think this could be a loose contact because why would it suddenly work if I press down the left side of the lid while starting it??

But I still don't know how to fix the issue permanently. Tried restarting it while pressing down and it did not work.

I am open to any suggestions! Thanks! This is so frustrating!

Troubleshooting Epson L3251 dotted lines issue

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just bought an Epson L3251 printer. I ran some test prints on plain paper with no problems, but when I use photo paper, these dotted lines appear in various places on the page. Is there a solution for this, or should I try to get a refund?
