Huge fan of COSMIC Epoch 1! | Experiencing post-update regressions with Wayland, Snaps & App Center

Hi everyone, First off, I want to express my huge appreciation to the System76 team for COSMIC. I’ve been a happy Pop!_OS user since 2022, and seeing the new desktop environment built from scratch in Rust has been an incredible experience. The performance and vision behind COSMIC Epoch 1 are truly impressive! However, after applying the latest system updates this past week, I started encountering a few regressions with apps that were previously working smoothly. I wanted to report them here to see if others are experiencing similar behavior:

  1. Video & Media Applications Issues: Applications that deal with video processing/encoding (such as OBS Studio and various video editors) have stopped functioning properly or are experiencing major instability since the last batch of updates.
  2. Flatpak Package Instability & Launch Failures: Several Flatpak packages—most notably DBeaver—are having trouble launching or running as expected.
  3. Pop!_Shop / COSMIC Store Issues: I’m unable to uninstall certain applications (especially Flatpak packages) directly through the App Center. When attempting to do so, it throws generic error messages or Wayland-related execution errors. Is anyone else running into these issues after the recent updates? Let me know if there are specific logs or system outputs I can provide to help troubleshoot or open formal issues on GitHub. Thanks again to the team for all the hard work!

Edit / Correction Note: I previously mentioned Snap packages by mistake in points #2 and #3. I've updated the post above to clarify that these issues are specifically occurring with Flatpak applications.

Hi, I updated today and after restarting my hdmi monitor seems normal, lights up while on lock screen, after writing my password the session logs in and now its a black screen? it gets identified as 1-3 but not the hdmi one, it shows my display link one but not the other

EDIT: Found a fix :) after looking into

❯ dpkg -l | grep -i '^ii.*nvidia'

noticed it was a driver problem

with sudo apt install system76-driver-nvidia it got fixed after reboot, in case this helps someone :))))

Help Streaming/Capture issues

Has anyone been having problems with streaming a game and the window freezes in a specific frame where the audio continues?

I had this issue recently when trying to stream a game, I tried both Xwayland and native wayland and different proton versions (cachy and proton-ge) with PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command%, none fixed the issue.

After doing a quick search I noticed that a few people also reported the same problem here and here

Has anyone been experience this issue has well? Is this a xdg portal problem or cosmic comp?

Is there some variable to fix this issue temporarily until a proper fix gets merged?

MacBook Pro 2013/2014 (GT 750M) on Pop!_OS 24.04 COSMIC: NVIDIA powers off when idle and wakes on demand — one-line installer

If you have a 15" Retina MacBook Pro from late 2013 / mid 2014 (MacBookPro11,3), you probably know the GPU situation on Linux: either the GT 750M runs hot all the time, or you power it off and can never wake it. I spent a few days getting macOS-style behaviour working on Pop!_OS 24.04 with COSMIC, and packaged it.

What you get: Intel drives the desktop, the GT 750M is powered off until you launch something on it (right-click → Run with…, or DRI_PRIME), it reclocks to full speed under load and powers off again after. Fans on a sane curve, Wi-Fi/camera/suspend all fine. Benchmarks and details in the README.

How: rEFInd's macOS spoof + gpu-switch so Intel is the boot GPU, COSMIC told to render on Intel, and a patched kernel (vanilla 7.0.11 + Krzysztof Kowalski's gmux/nouveau patches, which fix the power-cycle hang) with the reclocked daemon. The installer downloads a prebuilt kernel from the release, or you can rebuild it with the included script.

It's tested on exactly one machine (mine), so treat it as a 0.1 and read the uninstall section first. If you have this model and try it, I'd love to hear how it goes.

Two companion projects: Clover, a panel applet for Mac-style keys/trackpad/screenshots/auto-brightness on COSMIC (keyd-based, MacBook-focused for now, generic laptop support next), and Clover Dock, the dock app list with window previews on hover (patch going upstream). Links in the repo README.
