Halcyon - Desktop customization for Cosmic

I made this for myself, but it’s been fun to build, so I decided to release it.

So far it has:

  • Desktop widgets for weather, system stats, music, notes, calendar and a few other things.
  • Drag-and-drop placement, resizing and different widget styles.
  • Themes, wallpapers, fonts, icons, window, dock and panel customization.
  • Automatic wallpaper colors that apply to the widgets and COSMIC theme.

Islands requires a separate package. If you don’t want Islands, you only need the main Halcyon package.

I’ll keep developing it and adding features. Feature requests and bug reports are welcome on GitHub or here.

This was made using AI—vibe-coded, including AI-generated artwork. If you’re not comfortable installing something made that way, please don’t.

It’s an early release for Pop!_OS 24.04 with Cosmic 1.11, Expect things to break or look bad. Cosmic updates will require rebuild for the islands to keep working. Google Calendar sign-in isn’t configured in the public build yet.

EDIT: Found a fix :) after looking into

❯ dpkg -l | grep -i '^ii.*nvidia'

noticed it was a driver problem

with sudo apt install system76-driver-nvidia it got fixed after reboot, in case this helps someone :))))

Huge fan of COSMIC Epoch 1! | Experiencing post-update regressions with Wayland, Snaps & App Center

Hi everyone, First off, I want to express my huge appreciation to the System76 team for COSMIC. I’ve been a happy Pop!_OS user since 2022, and seeing the new desktop environment built from scratch in Rust has been an incredible experience. The performance and vision behind COSMIC Epoch 1 are truly impressive! However, after applying the latest system updates this past week, I started encountering a few regressions with apps that were previously working smoothly. I wanted to report them here to see if others are experiencing similar behavior:

  1. Video & Media Applications Issues: Applications that deal with video processing/encoding (such as OBS Studio and various video editors) have stopped functioning properly or are experiencing major instability since the last batch of updates.
  2. Flatpak Package Instability & Launch Failures: Several Flatpak packages—most notably DBeaver—are having trouble launching or running as expected.
  3. Pop!_Shop / COSMIC Store Issues: I’m unable to uninstall certain applications (especially Flatpak packages) directly through the App Center. When attempting to do so, it throws generic error messages or Wayland-related execution errors. Is anyone else running into these issues after the recent updates? Let me know if there are specific logs or system outputs I can provide to help troubleshoot or open formal issues on GitHub. Thanks again to the team for all the hard work!

Edit / Correction Note: I previously mentioned Snap packages by mistake in points #2 and #3. I've updated the post above to clarify that these issues are specifically occurring with Flatpak applications.

Hello all, I have been using Pop for about the last year and a half with almost no issues until today when I restarted my computer to this, I am not sure if and update caused this but I’m not sure what to do as I am still new to Linux

I have managed to get to a terminal after pressing control + alt + f5 and tried to do an update from there but to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions please send them my way, I just want my pc back 🥲

Help Screen sharing broken on Pop!_OS 24.04 COSMIC after system update — xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic crashes

Hi everyone,

I'm running Pop!_OS 24.04 with the COSMIC desktop environment, and screen sharing used to work correctly before I ran a system update and rebooted.

Since the update, screen sharing is broken in both Discord and Google Meet. The stream appears to start, but the preview is blank/frozen, and the COSMIC desktop portal crashes.

My system:

  • OS: Pop!_OS 24.04
  • Session type: Wayland
  • cosmic-comp: 0.1~1792508925~24.04~8cb1802
  • xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic: 1.11.0~1792525517~24.04~f448ddf
  • xdg-desktop-portal: 1.18.4-1ubuntu2.24.04.3
  • PipeWire and WirePlumber are running.

Relevant error from the logs:

Protocol error 1 on object ext_image_copy_capture_session_v1@172
ERROR panic: thread '<unnamed>' panicked at
'wayland dispatch: Backend error: Protocol error 1 on object
ext_image_copy_capture_session_v1@172'
src/wayland/mod.rs:344

Restarting the portal services did not fix the issue. My installed packages are already at the current versions available from my configured Pop!_OS repository.

I found this related issue:
https://github.com/pop-os/xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic/issues/384

However, my installed portal version is 1.11.0, so I haven't tried the community patch or downgraded any packages yet.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced this exact issue after a recent Pop!_OS/COSMIC update?
  2. Is there a known fix or a safe workaround?
  3. Would downgrading cosmic-comp help, and if so, which version is known to work with portal 1.11.0?
  4. Is there a way to identify which package update introduced the regression?

I'd appreciate any help. Screen sharing worked before the update, and I would prefer not to reinstall my system.

Thanks!
