Identification Rat poop or iguana poop?

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

South Florida in the house. This poop started showing up recently at our condo, not long after the HOA trapped a couple of stray cats. Everyone here says it's iguana poop, and we do have lots of iguanas around, but were they too afraid to poop until the cats were gone? Do iguanas even have pellet-like poop? Or do we have a new rat infestation? Thanks!

General Question We killed a mouse at our apartment today

• Upvotes

I didn’t expect to feel anything, but this mouse has been at our place for a few weeks and today a guy came over and ended up jamming a wooden rod into it until it died. It let out this little shriek. I have gotten extremely depressed at the noise it made, feels like it wasn’t the most humane way for it to go.

For you pros, have you ever gotten this sad and depressed over one of these little things dying? Am I insane for being this sad over what I saw and heard?

Anyone with Experience using SoFyre to keep mice out of home? Wisconsin here

• Upvotes

Hello, we bought a house about 18 months ago and last winter we had some mouse drippings in our utility/furnace room when I checked in March.

I saw an IG ad about SoFyre that apparently uses four different scents to deter mice from wanting to enter the home.

Does anyone have any experience with it? I have used some glue traps, but also would be great if they didn’t want to come in this house.

Obviously a pest control company is an option to, but would not like to spend more than I have to.

Bed bugs or just paranoia

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I’m hoping someone here can give me an honest opinion because I genuinely don’t know whether I have something to worry about or whether I’ve completely convinced myself I’ve got bed bugs!
It all started when I noticed several red marks on my young daughter’s skin that looked like bites. Obviously, I started Googling, and before I knew it, I was checking every inch of the house for bed bugs!

I then noticed some tiny black bits on my bed. Naturally, I panicked thinking they could be bed bug droppings, but they were more like little solid specks. They didn’t leave any ink-like stains or smears when I tried to rub them. I should probably mention that my cats also sleep on my bed, so I have no idea whether that could explain some of what I’m finding.

Then, to make matters worse, I actually spotted a tiny insect on my bed. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo before squishing it (which I’m now kicking myself for!). It was quite dark, almost dark brown/black, and more long than round. It definitely wasn’t that typical reddish-brown colour you see in pictures of bed bugs. When I squished it, there was a little bit of red, which of course sent me into another panic!

I’ve also found a couple of other tiny insects around the house, including one on a windowsill and another in the sofa, although neither has been identified as a bed bug maybe just beetles.

At this point, I’d pretty much convinced myself we had them, so I arranged for a professional pest control inspection.

The inspector checked the sofas, my bedroom, the beds and another bedroom. He couldn’t find any obvious evidence of bed bugs. No eggs, no black staining, no shells and no live bugs.
There was one thing, though, that even he wasn’t sure about. He found lots of tiny black bits stuck to the leg of one of my daughter’s soft toys. They wouldn’t come off, and he said it could possibly be some sort of bed bug activity, but he really wasn’t sure. He suggested throwing the toy away just in case, which I did.

Despite that, he said that based on everything he’d inspected, he didn’t believe we had bed bugs, although obviously he couldn’t guarantee it 100%.

So I finally started to feel a bit better… until today!
I found this tiny brownish/orangey thing almost embedded in one of the little holes in my Tempur pillow. It was only around the size of a rice grain and felt quite hard and crunchy, almost like a seed.

I broke it apart, was quite tough, and what really threw me was that it seemed to have a lighter, almost white layer underneath the outer shell, followed by something very dark or black inside. It was so tiny that I couldn’t properly make out what it was, even when zooming in.

I’ve attached photos of it and the broken pieces.

Now I’m wondering whether this could actually be a dried-out bed bug, some sort of casing, or something completely unrelated. Does anyone know what the inside of a dead or dried bed bug would look like? Could it have those different layers?

I think what’s making me question everything is that it’s not just one thing. It’s my daughter’s marks, the black specks, the insect I squished, the strange bits on her soft toy and now whatever I’ve found in my pillow. Individually, maybe none of these things mean much, but put them all together and my mind keeps going back to bed bugs!

The pest inspector seemed pretty confident there was nothing to suggest an infestation, but I keep thinking, what if he missed something, as he didn’t even check the duvet without the cover or behind the headboard for long (it’s long and heavy - the whole bed that is seeing as it’s an ottoman)

So, people who have actually dealt with bed bugs, what do you think? Would you take the negative inspection as a good sign and stop worrying, or do any of these things sound suspicious to you?
And please be honest! If I’m being completely paranoid, feel free to tell me that too. I’m annoyed I was content with the inspection and now this. Please help someone

Losing track of who confirmed their quarterly service

Small company, mostly residential quarterly plans. Before each round we text everyone to confirm a date. Replies trickle in over a few days, some by text and some on WhatsApp, and every round someone slips through. Either they confirmed and we missed it, or we show up and they never answered.

How do you keep confirmations straight? Is it a spreadsheet thing or do you have someone just on that?

Is it worth calling in a professional for mice infestation?

• Upvotes

I know it’s worth it for bugs as the majority of them are killed nearly immediately (or within a couple days) but I have never had such a problem with mice and it’s ruining my life.

We have been fighting mice for over a year. We have used SO many snap traps/live traps. We have gone through probably 4/5 bags of poison and they are still in our home to a despicable level. I’m constantly cleaning and spraying enzymes and places in my house smell like a hamster cage. I’m disgusted and so furious.

My partner says he knows a few spots where they are probably coming in at but he hasn’t done anything to negate that and I don’t know where the spots are to try to fix it with some steel wool or something (tbh I don’t really know what to do to fix it but YouTube exists to give it a go🤷🏼‍♀️)

I hate living here. We have kids. It’s a health hazard. Nothing ever feels clean. We rented a dumpster and tore our house apart so they wouldn’t have as many places to hide. I just don’t know if a professional is our only option at this point or if they would just do what we’ve done and spread poison and hope for the best.

PSA I will not use glue traps. I hate the poison and snap traps so those were hard enough to get on board with. I did try the bucket method but the one that I bought didn’t work quite right and I caught NOTHING.

A whopper of a wasp hive

Central Texas. Came home to our six-weeks-vacant house to find this masterpiece hanging from the Christmas lights on the porch. It’s about five inches long and three inches across.

My plan is to get a brand new can of wasp killer with the longest possible spray and have at it at dawn or dusk. Anything wrong with this plan?

Also is there any way to preserve this fabulous piece after I blast it full of poison? I have a friend who would use it in her art.

Thanks for any advice! Looking forward to using the porch again 🙄

Located in NYC. Living in a townhome with neighbors adjacent on both sides.

This was in front of my house on the side walk which is like 20 ft from my door. It’s above a tree with squirrel activity .

Sorry for reposting forgot to add a pic of nickel for size reference earlier.

Looks like it’s about 0.3-0.4 inches

Thanks in advance

Cockroach Advice, Please!

How is everyone? I hope you're all doing wonderful!

So we're getting ready to move into a house fully tomorrow on Wednesday.

The people that used to live there, they left it a huge mess with trash and furniture all over the place. Even dog poop and pee on the hardwood floors. And it was probably all left there for half a year or maybe a year or so. The kitchen cabinets are just completely disgusting underneath. Which I do not plan to use at all.

We had what you call one of the professionals come out and spray. He's sprayed so heavily, too. Even in the kitchen cabinets. I seen one just crawling around a few weeks ago. As well as just last night when I was trying to wash walls, sweep more and mop more.

I was wondering, what's worked for you guys that gets rid of cockroaches? I want to get rid of these things. We've already got a few things moved in. And I'm worried that they're already starting to go into everything we have there. We've dealt with cockroaches at a previous apartment as well. Nothing seemed to work when we lived there. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated! I would love a list of what works and what has worked in the past. What is something that they really hate?

I think they are earwigs and keep seeing these in the morning after I turn on the lights on scurrying away in my bathroom. They seem to be coming from cracks in the door jam behind the wall near my shower in the bathroom. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them? I just started seeing them maybe like 2 months ago

Wasps in roof and in house

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I think we have a wasp nest in our roof because we have 10 or so wasps in the house every day, coming from one room under the roof. As you can see there is wood paneling between the insulation and the inside, and with time the wood has dried and exposed gaps, through which I assume the wasps are coming.

Temperatures are dropping right now, we are down to 8-12° Celsius. Will the freezing winter weather eventually kill them and will they not come back the following year? Or does this require intervention? Will the warmth of our house keep them alive throughout the winter?

Unfortunately it is very difficult to see where the nest is because our house is 3 stories with a narrow space between the neighbors so almost impossible to put up a ladder (which we don’t have).

Rats under garden decking

I just paid out over £200 for an exterminator to visit to solve the issue of rats nesting under the decking of my garden cabin... the exterminator put around 4 to 6 bait boxes but found after 2 weeks none of the bait was taken as the rats avoided the traps

It would cost another £100+ to leave the boxes there and do further visits

So I've just bought 2 trap kits myself, these ones actually have a spring trap inside rather than just feeding poison. Ive read if you put peanut butter inside thats more alluring for the rats

There's burrow holes you can see as entrance points that go under the decking, I plan to leave the boxes just by these and hope they get snared

Once the rats have left the nest ive read about digging a trench and putting heavy wire fencing with a curve so they cant burrow backing

How can you tell reliably they have gone before doing this as don't want them to start chewing stuff up if trapped?

Is it worth buying an endoscopic camera to check?

How can I disinfect stuff and properly dispose of them if caught and anyone got any tips on tackling this on my own?

I heard that you can also get natural deterrenrs like peppermint etc or noise generators - how effective are these?

Thanks

Roaches What´s up with german cockroaches?

I have noticed in this sub that German cockroaches are the most feared of them all. I don´t really get why.

In Belgium all non-indiginous cockroaches are a problem. German, American, Surinam, Australian,... We do most often encounter German cockroaches, but they aren´t feared more than other species. Damage is the same for all species.

Why are German cockroaches more of a problem than other cockroaches in your specific country?

General Question I’m getting really fed up of mice coming into our house and I’m very close to selling

We continuously have mice keep coming in our house, they are clearly coming in through the front of the house straight into the kitchen where they are often found under the kick boards

My partner spent hours going over the inside and outside and sealing up any holes he could find, we cannot find anymore but clearly there is one. But it’s impossible to find.

I’m revolted, we do keep putting traps down and they’re often found dead in the trap but one/two has been caught in the living room and i have to spend hours cleaning the house properly.

I have two cats, it’s not stopping them.

I’m revolted and I’m really tempted to sell the house, what can I do? I have a toddler and I’m 37 weeks pregnant my house is a f**** health hazard and i am sick to death of it. I’m petrified we’re going to get hantavirus one of these days,

What can I do, I want this to stop, please help I’m absolutely desperate.

Is this a carpet beetle? could this be the reason for bed bug looking bites

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I’ve been having these bug bites for a month now. They’re small raised bumps. Sometimes they’re singular, sometimes they’re clustered, and sometimes they’re in a line. They are itchy raised bumps. I’m so paranoid that these are from bed bugs. I tore up most of my bed and I can’t find any sign of bed bugs. I’ve found three beetle looking things in the past month on my bed. First one was skinny and black and was crawling on my finger. Second one was the yellow skinny baby one. Third encounter is the one in the photo, but I think it’s the skin not the actual bug itself. I haven’t slept in my bed for a week, bc I’m so disgusted by the fact that there might be bed bugs feeding on me. I literally do not know what to do. Someobody pls tell me if these are carpet beetle bites😭😭I also live in the midwest

Please help with these gross little worms

Post image
6 Upvotes

We moved into our 50 year old house last summer and ever since the rain started up in the fall, I find these gross little jerks inside almost daily. They’re usually near the front door. I talked to a pest control company and he said all we can do is get sprays. Anyone have any other tips? Other than replacing the front door which is old and drafty (and I assume that’s where they’re crawling through but I don’t actually know) I’m not sure what else to do.
