During the presidency of Nicolás Avellaneda, on October 11, 1878, Law 954 established the Governorship of the National Territory of Patagonia, spanning “from the ocean in the east to the mountain range in the west, and from the Negro and Neuquén rivers in the north to Cape Horn in the south.”

The Governorship of Patagonia—or the National Territory of Patagonia—was a region administered by the federal government of Argentina; it existed from that date until October 16, 1884.

This (map) is from the third, expanded edition published in London by H. Fisher in 1827.

"The Narrative of English missionary William Ellis is particularly important, as it was the first book written about the Hawaiian Islands and the first serious notice of the islands since Captain Cook’s discovery of them forty-eight years earlier.

It may be called the first scientific book (primarily about the island of) Hawaii: although its main purpose was to report on mission progress, and Ellis was primarily interested in local manners and traditions, he was sufficiently expansive to include observations on such natural and cultural history topics as volcanoes, antiquities, and the anthropology of the islands." (Hill 191)

William Ellis (1794-1872) was a British missionary and writer. He set up the first printing press in the South Seas. He also printed the first Hawaiian book in 1823, a hymnal.

The work comprises three volumes and eight plates, one of which is a fold-out—specifically this one, the largest of the set. A copy of this edition is held at the National Library of Chile.

Dobrizhoffer (Frýdlant, Bohemia, 1717 – Vienna, 1791) joined the Society of Jesus in 1736 and arrived in Paraguay in 1749, where he worked for eighteen years—first among the Guaraní and later, for seven years, among the Abipón people of the Chaco. Following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories in 1767, he settled in Vienna, where he enjoyed the patronage of Empress Maria Theresa and wrote—in Latin—his ethnographic history of the Abipón people, which includes detailed observations on the region's fauna, flora, rivers, and cities. To accompany his work, Dobrizhoffer created three original maps based on his own fieldwork—including this Mappa Paraquariæ.

This map depicts the former Jesuit province of Paraguay (covering territory roughly corresponding to present-day Paraguay, northern Argentina, southern Bolivia, and parts of Brazil and Uruguay) and marks rivers such as the Paraná and the Paraguay, as well as the locations of the reducciones (settlements) and missions established by the Society of Jesus among various indigenous peoples—including the Chiquitos, Chiriguanos, Tobas, Mocovíes, and Abipones. Scholarly research on post-expulsion Jesuit cartography has noted that, while Dobrizhoffer acknowledges the Jesuit contribution to the region's development in his narrative, his maps belong to a period of cartographic transition following the Order's suppression in 1773; during this time, former missionaries living in exile in Europe continued to produce and disseminate the geographical knowledge they had gathered during their missions in the Americas.
