Meta PSA: The "What, and "Why" of Context

It's that time of year again!

Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team. Particularly considering our massive growth this past year, we thought it was about time for another reminder about everyone's favorite part of posting on /r/worldbuilding..... Context

Context is a requirement for almost all non-prompt posts on r/worldbuilding, so it's an important thing to understand... But what is it?

What is context?

Context is information that explains what your post is about, and how it fits into the rest of your/a worldbuilding project.

If your post is about a creature in your world, for example, that might mean telling us about the environment in which it lives, and how it overcomes its challenges. That might mean telling us about how it's been domesticated and what the creature is used for, along with how it fits into the society of the people who use it. That might mean telling us about other creatures or plants that it eats, and why that matters. All of these things give us some information about the creature and how it fits into your world.

Your post may be about a creature, but it may be about a character, a location, an event, an object, or any number of other things. Regardless of what it's about, the basic requirement for context is the same:

  • Tell us about it
  • Tell us something that explains its place within your world.

In general, telling us the Who, What, When, Why, and How of the subject of your post is a good way to meet our requirements.

That said... Think about what you're posting and if you're actually doing these things. Telling us that Jerry killed Fred a century ago doesn't do these things, it gives us two proper nouns, a verb, and an arbitrary length of time. Telling us who Jerry and Fred actually are, why one killed the other, how it was done and why that matters (if it does), and the consequences of that action on the world almost certainly does meet these requirements.

For something like a resource, context is still a requirement and the basic idea remains the same; Tell us what we're looking at and how it's relevant to worldbuilding. "I found this inspirational", is not adequate context, but, "This article talks about the history of several real-world religions, and I think that some events in their past are interesting examples of how fictional belief systems could develop, too." probably is.

If you're still unsure, feel free to send us a modmail about it. Send us a copy of what you'd like to post, and we can let you know if it's okay, or why it's not.

Why is Context Required?

Context is required for several reasons, both for your sake and ours.

  • Context provides some basic information to an audience, so they can understand what you're talking about and how it fits into your world. As a result, if your post interests them they can ask substantive questions instead of having to ask about basic concepts first.

  • If you have a question or would like input, context gives people enough information to understand your goals and vision for your world (or at least an element of it), and provide more useful feedback.

  • On our end, a major purpose is to establish that your post is on-topic. A picture that you've created might be very nice, but unless you can tell us what it is and how it fits into your world, it's just a picture. A character could be very important to your world, but if all you give us is their name and favourite foods then you're not giving us your worldbuilding, you're giving us your character.

Generally, we allow 15 minutes for context to be added to a post on r/worldbuilding so you may want to write it up beforehand. In some cases-- Primarily for newer users-- We may offer reminders and additional time, but this is typically a one-time thing.

As always, if you've got any sort of questions or comments on this topic, feel free to leave them here!

Hundreds of years ago the planet of Jaka was at the center of Wars. War fought between galactic empires, bringing death and destruction unimaginable by man. At some point long forgotten the empires left, no one on Jaka knows why or what happened. Perhaps Peace was made, or they collapsed, maybe the wars moved on somewhere else.

What's left are the remnants of it all. Megastructures dots the landscape some are not sure of their original purpose. Beneath the ground sprawling complexes and tunnels reaching kilometers below ground.

Most of the population are agrarian farmers. Some are miners, others scavengers exploring ancient tunnels and cities. Ancient defensive system are often a danger but nothing a scavenger can't take care off, bandits tho rare do sometimes inhabits darker corners of tge world

At present the world of Jaka is at peace. The people had moved on and the world healed overtime, growing around old relic of war a new life was born.

Discussion Mithril is Aluminum

Mithril is aluminum

It is usually wielded by elves in media because they are the only ones who can forge it - hear me out.

In the real world aluminum was notoriously hard to smelt due to bauxite's (common aluminum ore) notoriously high melting point. It was valued over gold as Emperor Napoleon III served honored guests cutlery made from it. The pinnacle of the Washington Monument is aluminum for this very reason. It was not until someone attempted electrolysis (a chemical separation technique utilizing an electrical current) on bauxite - boom. Workable aluminum.

Now, in fantasy worlds, elves detest the idea of forges, fires, smelting. It involves the consumption of wood - life - to fuel. Nature magic, on the other hand, is fair game. Druids and other geomancer-types typically have some access to electricity-based spells. If they zap rocks, boom - "mithril"

Question Human mediocrity

As I’ve been drawing more lately, I started wondering: why do regular humans always take center stage, or at least manage to build dominant civilizations in fantasy worlds? Their reproductive rate is lower than goblins, they don’t have high-end tech like dwarves, they don't live forever or have amazing talents like elves, and they're physically weaker than orcs. And it's not like they're a species that hides away in the shadows either. What are your thoughts on this? (Honestly, I just wanted to flex my drawings a bit.)

Prompt What do people from different major nations/states/other places in your world call themselves/each other? Saw this posted on another sub and it got me thinking about that. Referring to people by their city, region, nation, etc. of origin is very common and natural.

For example, in one of the worlds I've been working on, locals may have their own various names for people from different nations and cities, but spelljammers will also identify people more broadly at times by planet of origin; Elbazians from Elbaz, Twerans from Twera, Therans from Thera, Raians from Rai, Windsorites from Windsor, Torpalites from Torpal, Zazians from Za'az, Azzians from Az'za, Belters from the Belt, Arrows from the Arrow.

Language Need Help with naming a species of treeships.

Post image
91 Upvotes

I am working on a sci-fi story set onboard a treeship that is bonded to a human. This tree (and others like it) serve as the central power source and main data core for the ship, as well as make up a good portion of the ship's superstructure and equipment. Similar to the idea of the Juraian Treeships from Tenchi Muyo or the Yggdrasil treeship from Hyperion.

I need advice on the name of the species of trees used for these ships.

My main thought is Weretréow Tree (were=man and treow=old English word for tree). So technically man-tree tree, and indicating the ties between man and tree using the name, and hinting at the fact that human DNA may or may not have been used to help create these trees in the first place.

The other idea was to call it an Akasha Tree, to hint at both the power source the trees draw from and their use as the central data processing for the ships.

I want to make sure they don't sound too clunky and sounds like something people would actually use.

Do these work or do you have any other names you could think of?

How have you implemented undead into your setting? Have you implemented them at all? Are they classic undead, more diverse or unique? What’s your opinion on undead in a setting? I’m curious to hear! I’ve only recently come around to them in my own setting.

Discussion Working on a fantasy world, and I’m curious what you’d want to know about it…

Post image
89 Upvotes

I’ve been working on a fantasy world for a story I’m writing, and I thought it’d be fun to share a bit about it and see what people are curious about. My world has different races, cultures, histories, and ideas about magic, nature, and balance. I’m still developing it, but I’ve already spent quite a bit of time figuring out how its different parts fit together. If you could ask a worldbuilder anything about their world, what would you want to know? Or, if there’s something about my world you’re curious about. I’d love to talk about it and share some of the lore I’ve been working on.

I've done a map just to get ideas out of my head and make things make sense in a way. It has a lot of mistakes but it’s okay.

Discussion Does anyone have any ideas for a scientific reason Silver would hurt Werewolves and vampires?

I try to base my setting with a lot of real world science and biology. So I am trying to find a reason why silver would hurt these creatures beyond it's "purity" silver works against ghosts because ghosts are made of electric fields and the silver (being the most conductive metal on earth) short circuits these fields. Hurting the ghost.
But I can't find a reason for physical creatures.
Vampires and werewolves come from diseases causing extreme mutation in the host. So how would silver affect these hosts mutated bodies?
Any assistance is most appreciated! Thanks!

Discussion What are some intresting cases of sexual dimorphism in your world?

• Upvotes

I was doing an art piece about some plesiosaur cryptids falling in love with the male, looking like a level 40 Jurassic World: The Game creature. Basically, it's highly pigmented, with stripes and spikes all over, with the female being a more basic brown. That got me thinking: with how much male and female animals can diverge in looks, what does that look like in your worlds? For example, like my artwork, the males could be highly ornamented with high-contrast colors and stuff while the females could be confused for a rock if they stand still. Maybe the females tower over the average person while the males are the size of budgies. Hell, males and females could be so physiologically different that, at first glance, they could be confused for different species.

Question I'm pretty sure I have Worldbuilder's Disease. How can I fix this?

• Upvotes

I'm a serial procrastinator when it comes to literature. I've got a myriad of excuses at my disposal and even if true, don't serve as good ones. For brevity, I won't get into detail on how I'm procrastinating, and it's also because I can't really put into words in a way I feel that people can understand.

I've made many characters, a religion, multiple species, corporations, megacities, economies, almost an entire lorebook website, yet I have barely any written, documented story to show for it.

Please help. It's been like this for as long as I've started roleplaying online, back in march 2020.

Thanks in advance,

—Rebecca

Lore Meet the Frill, a spacefairing extraterrestrial species from the planet Gvaadj

Post image
13 Upvotes

For context, this is part of my personal sci-fi project. The text below is meant to be part of an in-universe guidebook for any Humans that may find themselves working with members of this alien species. This probably doesn't need to be said, but just in case: no AI was used whatsoever to write the text. I just have a tendency to use big words and give long descriptions.

Home planet:

The home planet of the Frills is named Gvaadj, a 0.8 Earth mass planet that orbits a binary pair of stars with the spectral types K0 and K7. Despite the lower temperature of its host stars, the global climate of Gvaadj is quite warm, owing to a close orbit and natural greenhouse atmosphere. The surface of Gvaadj is largely dominated by arid desert wastelands, which while not entirely uninhabitable, are largely devoid of large lifeforms. However, the surface of Gvaadj bears numerous disconnected inland seas, each of which are ringed with lush coastal forests that are supplied by the ample moisture and precipitation. Most homebound Frills live in densely populated metropolises that similarly cling to the inland seas for access to moisture. Outside of these cities, the rest of Gvaadj is largely uninhabited, though there are some highly adapted nomadic communities that roam the less harsh areas. These expansive wastes have been taking advantage of by both Frills and other sophonts, and are host to several massive industrial centers. Above the surface, Gvaadj also bears a thin but prominent ring system, which was created by a destabilized moon that shattered within the planet's Roche limit roughly 30 million Earth years ago. This event also caused a cataclysmic rain of large meteorites, which in turn triggered a severe mass extinction. The effects of this bombardment can still be seen on Gvaadj in the form of numerous craters throughout the planet's equatorial regions, as well as its relative lack of biodiversity even when accounting for the planet's surface conditions.

Anatomical features:

  • Frills sport prominent neck frills which are their English namesake. is colored orange/gold in contrast to the green body. The neck frill consists four jointed limb-like appendages linked vertically with two skin membranes, creating a mechanical system akin to that of an umbrella or compact satellite dish. Developed from a sophisticated predatory weapon used by their evolutionary ancestors to ambush prey, it evolved to function as both thermoregulation and display. Males have larger, nearly circular neck frills, while females (such as the one pictured) have smaller bow-tie shaped neck frills. When not displaying, the neck frills are folded and lay atop the shoulders, showing only the green outer surface
  • Frills have scaly skin, which is thicker and differently colored on the front of the torso, palms and fingertips, toes, and elbow/knee pads. This skin is shed on a regular basis of roughly 200 Earth days in adults, though developing hatchlings may shed their skin in as little as every 10 Earth days to account for their rapid growth. The shed skin is usually eaten, a behavior born from instinct to recoup energy loss and hide their presence from predators, though some cultures prefer to burn their shed skins
  • Frills are considered mesothermic, meaning that they have some ability to generate their own body heat, but cannot do so in a sufficient manner for maintaining homeostasis, and Frills must still rely on external heat sources. Because of this, Frills usually wear little to no clothing in their native environment so as to not overheat, but must rely on heavy protective clothing and heating lamps even in mild temperatures, and they can suffer from hypothermia even at standard Human room temperature (20°C)
  • Strangely, Frills lack even vestigial eyelids, despite the brightness and abundance of windswept sand on their home planet. It's thought that this is because their aquatic evolutionary ancestors did not require them in murky waters, and the evolution of the Frills was too rapid to permit proper adaptation to land. To compensate, Frills use their hands to wipe away any debris, and will moisten their eyes with any available water source, often their own saliva. Frills also possess incredibly thick corneas and greatly reduced light sensitivity. In fact, they can not see blue light, and their color vision is like that of Humans with tritanopia color blindness, meaning that Frills have difficulty telling the difference between what Humans perceive green and blue. Still, their eyes are still more vulnerable to physical and radiation damage than other sophonts, and are often seen wearing protective goggles
  • Female Frills that choose to have children will lay eggs in clutches of up to three. These eggs are ellipsoidal in shape and about 0.15 meters in breadth, and are uniformly beige in color. The hatchlings are quite small yet surprisingly well developed, and are capable of living independently almost from birth

Behavior and culture:

  • Being the most recent species to achieve warp capability, the Frills are still slightly in technology and interstellar infrastructure. Despite this, the Frills have already established a firm and widespread presence in the galaxy with their willingness to work with members of other species, particularly in conjunction with Humans
  • Frills vary wildly in cultures and phenotypes, due to the historical isolation between different ethnicities among the inland seas. However, one thing that is constant among all Frill cultures is the reverence and worship of rain. The Frills noticed early on that the presence of regular precipitation permitted the habitability of certain areas, and so rain is consistently linked with life and fertility in all Frill religions. Several cultures hold extravagant ceremonies to celebrate seasonal downpours, and most Frills consider those born or conceived during a rainstorm to be blessed
  • Frills are highly emotive and prefer to keep their bodies moving to help build up body heat. Because of this, Frills are often seen as overly emotional and hyperactive to members of other species, which has the potential to lead to conflict between Frills and other species. It is advised that those working with Frills give them plenty of space, both physical and emotional
  • The common language of the Frills is highly standardized, consisting entirely of single-syllable words that follow a rigid phonemic structure. The common language was created not long after the Frills established first contact with the rest of the galaxy, as the natural Frill languages are far too complex and separated to be easily learned and spoken by Frills and outsiders. Therefore, a language was constructed that was easy for all Frills to learn, using simple analytic grammar and a simplistic alphabetic script to match. The extensive usage of a constructed common language is unique to the Frills, as for all other species the common language is one that arose naturally and gradually spread until it was spoken by all members of the species, as is the case with Humans and their common language English. By coincidence, the vocal tracts of Humans and Frills are similar enough to where they can easily speak each other's languages, albeit with some limitations due to various anatomical differences (for instance, Frills can not readily pronounce /o/ and /u/ vowels)

Map Mapping a mythical island from an ancient Indian epic: Ravana’s Lanka, reconstructed from Valmiki’s Ramayana

Post image
30 Upvotes

My project:

I’m reconstructing the world of the Ramayana, an ancient Indian epic attributed to the sage Valmiki, using only what the original text itself says. The story follows Prince Rama, who crosses the sea with an army to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana, the king of the island of Lanka. Valmiki never gives a map, but he describes Lanka in scattered detail across hundreds of verses. My goal is to turn those descriptions into one consistent, mappable world, and then use it to understand the war that takes place there.

What you’re looking at:

This is the island of Lanka and its capital city. The city sits inside a wall and a moat, with four gates facing the four directions. Ravana’s palace is at the center, surrounded by the mansions of his son Indrajit and his brothers Kumbhakarna and Vibheeshana. Around the city are the mountains of Trikuta and Suvela, the Nikumbhila Grove where Indrajit performs his rituals, and in the north-east, the bridge (Nala Setu) Rama’s army builds to cross the sea, with their camp beside it.

How it fits together:

Some features came straight from the text, like the four gates and the moat. Others were judgment calls I had to make for the world to be consistent. Mount Suvela has to be close enough for Rama’s army to see into the city. Nikumbhila Grove has to be far enough outside the walls for Indrajit to leave unseen. Once everything was placed, the war started to make sense geographically. For example, why Rama assigns a different commander to each gate.

I’d love feedback on the choices I made, from worldbuilders and from anyone who knows or is interested in ancient Indian epics.

Discussion Dealing with Burnout when World-Building

• Upvotes

Hey, [r/worldbuilding](r/worldbuilding)!
This is my first time posting here, but my specific concoction of neurodivergencies makes me super prone to world-building for literally anything. So, I’ve got a (few) question(s) for anyone who is willing to answer them!

How do you personally go about preventing burnout when working on world-building projects?
How normal/common is it to have multiple intricate projects going on at once?
In the case you do end up experiencing burnout when working on a project, what do you do to help yourself recover from it?

Like I said, I will world-build with basically anything… so, my recovery tactic (when suffering from burnout) may or may not be to just move onto or start a different project, which will inevitably also just involve me world-building again in some capacity….

For example, the most recent iteration of this cycle: I’ve lost all the motivation I had to keep working on state flag designs for an alternate history/timeline United States of America? Oh, well. I guess it’s time to go work on the conlang I started roughly 5 years ago, which I haven’t touched for nearly 3-4 years, because I burnt myself out so badly working on it that I literally just dropped it entirely!!

It’s rough out here when your brain doesn’t let you enjoy anything on a purely surface-level.
Advice would be appreciated. <3 ^^

Lore Europa project sol

1.1k Upvotes

Project context
Europans were the first Jovians to reinvent space travel and explore Sol after humanity's collapse. Europans are the main people I use to explain the worlds of Sol; they are semi-reliable narrators with deep religious ties to the sentient machines called frames. Europans are very different from humans; they are derived from wraiths, supersoldiers from Antarctica's expansion into the outer system. After the collapse, they outcompeted humans on Europa's ice shelves and evolved into the modern Europan over the following millennia.

Europa's landmasses float, tethered deep beneath the sea, too far below for any current vessel to reach. Atlas is the largest continent and is home to the United Europa Republic (UER), the major Europan power behind the Mars and Saturn expeditions. Eden is a militaristic, democratic societies that invest heavily in their research on Io and Ganymede. Rothera is in the process of being assimilated into the UER; insurrectionists, terrorists, and proxy militias funded by Eden's government have slowed this process for decades. Acadia and Reah are semi-autonomous regions of the UER, mostly acting as industrial hubs and military bases. The ice shelves of Rohea and Oseaca are named after Europan god-kings of legend; both are desolate polar wastelands.

The Europan people stand roughly 9 ft. tall and weigh roughly 200-250 lbs on Europa. They are highly carnivorous for primates, feeding mostly on Native Europan biota(NEBs) and introduced Earth animals. Europans also engage in funerary cannibalism; this cultural relic from their early history has persisted in all current cultures. Consuming another after they pass is a sign of respect and a way to honor the dead; Europans display the skulls of the dead in either homes or institutions where the individual was important; leaving a body to rot is the greatest form of disrespect. Europans have pit organs and extra cone cells, allowing them to see infrared light; this is for tracking prey and machines in polar conditions. On Europa's cold, rainy continents, infrared sight is also useful for avoiding predators and enemies. The Europan ear is bifid, with between 4 and 5 lobes; the lobes can be flushed with blood, creating different heat profiles. This allows for silent short-range communication between Europans. Europan hair is structurally blue; this interacts with melanin to create colors ranging from black and purple to cerulean and baby blue. They also have pigmentless patches on their arms and bodies that create stripes and patterns. Both of these features are significantly more exaggerated in modern europans due to sexual selection.

Europan technology is reliant on electricity mostly gathered through solar and tidal energy; Europa has no fossil fuels on the continental shelves, only deep near the core. NEB biology also creates only low-grade fuels. Gunpowder was also never discovered; magnetism is the main way anything gets transported, both cargo and munitions. Maglift trams and space elevators are the main ways resources are transported; domestic animals carry things short range. Rail guns are the only weaponry europans use; the ammo is cheap, and the technology is reliable and has been developed for centuries.

Europa's wildlife is roughly half Earth-derived species and half native. The NEBS are sightless, fishlike animals that fill out most of the aquatic ecosystem; chimeras developed to resemble Ediacaran biota and three-eyed amphibians fill out the rest of the biosphere. Kelp and macroalgae cover vast portions of Europa's cold, nutrient-dense oceans. Coniferous rainforests, wet prairie, swamp, and pine mangrove are the major land ecosystems. Europa is wet; the humidity never dips below 80% anywhere except the poles. The vast ice shelves are relatively dead. The underside of the ice shelves hosts the greatest diversity of NEBs anywhere on the Moon.

Lore Bunker Lore2, Elves and Peddlers of the FairyHills

The Bunker elves are tall, beautiful, reserved, and solitary, like archetypal Torkinian elves from any classic fantasy story or world.
The real difference for the Bunker elves lies in their situation; too proud to abandon their cities, these were swallowed by the cursed forest, and within a few years they were isolated and surrounded by monsters, becoming isolated, self-sustaining towns and villages protected by the barrier generated by a Fairy Tree.

These elves wear a large number of ritual earrings. Depending on the location and type, these can have various meanings, from their profession and lineage to triumphs and feats. It is quite common for their ears to begin to droop and lengthen over time due to the weight of years.

Some examples: A gold sphere in the tragus of the ear (the small fold above the ear canal) is equivalent to a wedding ring, or the elongated plates on the helix (upper cartilage of the ear) represent feats; their meaning varies according to size and position, as if they were medallions.

Peddlers of the FairyHills
During the first years trapped in the cursed forest, the elven cities (Fairy Hills) managed to establish a trade network in which the Peddlers had the important task of trading scarce or lost supplies, such as seeds, minerals, and medicines.

These Peddlers are usually accompanied by fairies and form small teams of one to three elves to remain undetected or confront the monsters on their journey through Fairy Hills. A Peddler is usually recognizable by their scars, since the elves, never leaving their safe cities, have pristine bodies, or at least lack the scars inflicted by the fearsome claws of the forest beasts.

Over time, the vast majority of Fairy Hills fell, though rarely due to monsters. Mostly, it was due to disease, famine, or because the Fairy Tree withered, rendering its barrier incapable of protecting them from the forest. Each time one of the elven cities fell, it left a gaping hole in the Peddlers' network, especially if there were no safe alternative routes. This forced them to take long and perilous journeys to keep the network connected, with no safe havens along the way.

Currently, some of the remaining Fairy Hills are cut off from the trade network after losing all nearby cities several days' journey away. Other routes are nearly impassable, with preparations underway for the day when the few Peddlers skilled enough and perhaps a little too crazy to maintain them will perish, never again receiving the safety and support of other cities.

I know I've largely ignored the involvement and relationship of fairies with elves, I plan to delve deeper into them in "Bunker Lore 3"

The thanzian navy - painting

Thanzia was one of the few nations alongside Vetonnia and Zarfar who managed to crontrol the entirety of the two Ivnas Seas, north and south.

Their ships supplied the homeland, controlled many naval routes and transported their army to conquer these rich coastlines. The famous Zahitian-Thanzian war couldn't be possible for the Thanzians without their control of the sea.

Discussion How do diverse areas handle accessibility in your world?

I'm building a Star Trek-inspired universe, with one of the major differences being species diversity. Most Star Trek species are humanoid, which means human-centric living spaces, corridors, community areas, etc. work just fine.

But how would the Federation handle a species three inches tall? What about one nine feet wide? What about a species that flies, and not in a floaty way, but a zoom-through-the-air way?

The Grand Sapient Coalition idolizes accessibility. Every species should be, at the very least, safe, if not comfortable.

When you enter a GSC space, you'll probably notice the scale first. Giant hallways, tall ceilings, large doorways. They're oversized even for the largest species, just in case a larger one comes along, and the added height of the ceiling allows flying species to glide without issue. If you look closer, you'll find the miniature hallways built into the walls of most normal paths. They're designed for species roughly shorter than a foot, and sit at one-third and two-thirds up usual hallway walls. Species used to high places can take the upper path, while ground-dwellers can use the lower one, though either could choose to use the other path if they desired.

Public spaces look relatively empty at first, but the touch of a button can bring tables and chairs up from the floor. These are all individually controlled and can be adjusted using personal devices. Species that require unique seating, like bowls, saddles, or bars for hanging, can find attachments available in nearby storage areas. Species with limited motion or difficulty manipulating objects can request help from robotic assistants, which usually take the form of robotic arms or small drones. It's not perfect; Less common species may not be able to find the right attachment if others are using them, but it's a decent solution, and issues don't happen too commonly. Requests can be made to add more seating attachments if needed.

Also present in public areas are landing and take-off zones. Flying species need a safe place to land without crashing into people or objects, and these areas provide just that. Another common sight are rest zones. Some species have low mobility or energy and need to recharge sooner than their more efficient compatriots. Rest zones are sort of like break rooms - drink dispensers, lots of seating, and charging outlets. These areas can often be found along hallways or other areas with high traffic.

Another issue is sensory accessibility. Some species may have a higher sensitivity to noise, light, or smell, which requires some environmental considerations.

Screens, for example, are usually highly directional. You can see storefront signs when walking down a street, but when you look ahead or behind you, those screens will look nearly black. Only those directly in your line of sight will be visible.

Sound is also policed, though less so. The nature of sound makes it difficult to control, so there are less strict rules. Advertisements are generally not allowed, and spaces with loud noises, like restaurants or businesses, require soundproofing.

Smell is another difficult issue. It can be overwhelming to some, but it can also serve as an important part of identification and communication for some species. Restaurants also use scents as a form of advertisement. As such, smell is segmented as opposed to completely restricted. Culinary Districts are almost entirely filled with restaurants and other food vendors/stalls. These areas have few restrictions on scent, while surrounding areas likely will.

Finally, Personal Interface Devices (PIDs).

When you have hundreds of species working together, how do you make sure they can all interact with the same equipment? You use a middleman. PIDs are portable, species-specific devices that can interface with most GSC machinery, either wirelessly or through a cable. Humanoid species may have a tablet-looking PID, with buttons, a touch screen, a trackpad, and maybe a portable keyboard. These are fairly large, probably a bit larger than a full-sized tablet or laptop, but they're usually pretty light. A blind species may not require a screen and may instead possess a more robust sound system. Species with no prehensile limbs may use a voice recognition feature and wear the PID on their back/head/wrist/ankle.

These are just a few of the things I've been thinking about regarding accessibility. Ultimately, I haven't done any formal research or anything, so I'm sure there's plenty of actual accessibility issues I'm missing. I'm hoping to get some feedback, as well as new ideas, so I can push accessibility to its limit. So, how do you tackle interspecies spaces and accessibility in your world?
