DISCUSSION 💬 Nothing beats the illustration pages of 1966-1981 Nancy Drew books

• Upvotes

I've always favored the Nancy Drew files series, as well as the Minstrel and the Aladdin versions of the original mystery series due to their badass portrayals of Nancy Drew as well as their plots, but DAMN, the illustrations of these revised text versions of the original mystery series are still unbeatable.

Also, what this series captures is the atmosphere and the adventure aspect of the Nancy Drew series, and the illustrations sure do help to CAPITALIZE on it. You also get a visual peak of what it was like during those times.

Inspired by the other thread asking who your “hear me out” character is.

Yuri got no love when even the monster from Captive Curse did.

Yuri deserves love too :(

DISCUSSION 💬 Your most controversial DNF and why

• Upvotes

Games I didn't feel like finishing because I wasn't enjoying them:
Shadow Ranch - the saddle pmo
Last Train - felt claustrophobic
Silent Spy - eh I prefer the older games
Treasure in the Royal Tower - I kept hitting a wall on my replay. It reminded me of playing as a kid, I could never beat it but my friend did and I was so mad at the time lol

Any popular games that you chose not to finish?

I love mini games, ESPECIALLY cooking ones! I just finished playing Ugoku Sushi Bar and loved it, felt like the vibe of a mini game, there's even a fishing mini game! What are your favorites? What game do they remind you of?

MEMES 🥇 College of seeing a playthrough~

Post image

A friend of mine streamed a playthrough of this game, my first time experiencing anything Nancy Drew. It was a grand time, and because I enjoy meme-ing what I enjoy, felt compelled to draw up a college of experiences from this game.

This franchise seems great, and I hope my joy from it can be felt in this.

BOOKS 📚 today's half price find

one of the half prices near me always seems to have something fun! im not sure what the "purse" with the two flashlights inside was done for, I've never seen it before and same with that old clock with the purple dust jacket. gonna have to do some research to find out but either way they were so fun and different I had to get them for my collection. also found a British edition dust jacket. I love that they are dust jackets but have the spine that looks like the American picture covers and the book itself is red instead of blue 😍

#11 CURSE OF BLACKMOOR MANOR 🐺 Peaked in my no-walkthrough Master Sleuth run

CUR is my favorite game and I have been avoiding it like the plague during my no walkthrough Master Sleuth run 😂

9 hours of gameplay, 15 pages of notes, so many retracings of steps, and lots of games with Jane later, and I succeeded! I LOVED sitting in this game, forcing myself to take breaks when feeling hopelessly lost or stuck, and just immersing myself in all the Penvellyn lore.

I love that my award at the end of the game was for playing a lot of games with lonely Jane. 🤧 my skull and bones buddy lol

I think I got a good amount of the optional haunting scenes! Maybe all of them? The benefit of spending so much time in the game haha

SHITPOST 💩 TRT *imaginary mood board*

Post image

I didn’t play Treasure in the Royal Tower growing up so I had no frame of reference for it. I went into it blind and loved it but it was definitely a whole different vibe than what I was expecting. Couldn’t get this vibe out of my head so I made a Pinterest mood board of it, lol. I actually have quite a few games that subverted my expectations which always makes it really fun when I actually play the game :)

ALTERNATIVES 🎮 Crowns and pawns: Kingdom of deceit

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1125910/Crowns_and_Pawns_Kingdom_of_Deceit/

I'm planning to replay this game and figured I'll share this with y'all in the sub. It is rated "mostly positive" due to the fact that some people found the sequencing needed to trigger an event too rigid. As a ND game fan it didn't bother me. I'm sure there are some other complaints, but I thoroughly enjoyed it when I played it 2 years ago!

If anyone has played this before, lemme know ur thoughts!

ALTERNATIVES 🎮 Free puzzle game on Epic

There is a free game called "Agent A: A puzzle in disguise" this week in the Epic game store. I haven't played it yet, but it looks like a fun little puzzle game with a spy theme that reminds me of Nancy Drew puzzles.

DISCUSSION 💬 Ever felt this?

This may be referring to any puzzle game but in this case, I was thinking about the puzzles from the Nancy Drew games (the last puzzle I overthought may have been the one Corine gives you or that piano puzzle or the students page on the website in Waverly 😅)

ALTERNATIVES 🎮 My list of mystery games for Nancy Drew-lovers

GAME NAME DESCRIPTION VOICE ACTING JUMPSCARES AND CHASE SCENES PRICE/SALE
Detective Grimoire This point-and-click whodunit takes place in a swamp and features simple puzzles and cartoony art. Yes No $7, on sale for $2. Worth at full price, imo.
Tangle Tower A sequel to Detective Grimoire, this game features a family living in a large mansion on an island, where a locked-door murder occurs. Great cast of kooky characters. There is another sequel called The Mermaid Mask I have yet to play. Yes No $20, currently on sale for $4. Worth at full price, imo, if you enjoyed the first game. See bundle if interested in both.
This Bed We Made You play as a 1950s hotel maid who finds a mystery while snooping through guests’ rooms. A short game at roughly 5 hours. Easy puzzles. Choices matter. Romance options. Yes No $25. Sale recommended, due to shortness of game.
Call of the Sea A 1930s wife looks for her missing husband in this unsettling island mystery. Things take a dark turn about halfway through. Some difficult puzzles. One choice at the end matters. Yes A few jumpscares involving images flashing like memories, but not anyone jumping out. No chase scenes. $20, currently on sale for $5. Worth full price, imo.
Frog Detective (series) A goofy frog does his best at solving light-hearted mysteries in this low-poly[wag?] series. Great silly humor. No No $14 for bundle, currently on sale for $8
Killer Frequency Play as a small-town radio host assigned to be a police dispatcher for an evening while a legendary serial killer runs amok. This game is very dialogue-heavy. Excellent synthwave soundtrack. Simple puzzles. Choices matter. Yes One obvious jumpscare during the prologue wherein a person jumps out. None after, and no chases, just creepy atmosphere. $25, sale recommended.
The Séance at Blake Manor A point-and-click mystery at a manor in 1890s Ireland. I deeply enjoyed this game, despite the mechanics seeming intimidating. Every time you look at a clue, you lose 1 minute towards solving the case. I learned a lot about Ireland and its folklore. Choices matter. Yes A few flashing images like a person appearing in a flash of lightning, with a loud sound. No chase scenes. Spooky music. $20, well worth it imo.
The Darkside Detective This pixel point-and-click puzzle game features awful (wonderful) humor from a schlubby detective and his dimwitted cop partner as they solve occult mysteries. No No $15
The Silent Age A side-scroller point-and-click game wherein you time travel between the 1970s and a post-apocalyptic future. Can you save humanity? Some No $10
Unsolved Case (series) This game requires 2 players, each of you getting half of the clues. Work together to catch a killer (among other mysteries in the sequels). Yes No Free
Duck Detective (series) Play as a down-on-his-luck duck in this short whodunit about stolen salami. Cute art. Simple puzzles. There is also a sequel I have yet to play. Yes No $10, currently on sale for $8
Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise A suave spy tracks down the nefarious Agent A in this neo-noir puzzle game. Many puzzles, some difficult. Really enjoyed this. Some No $20, worth it imo.
Overboard It’s the 1930s on a cruise liner, and you’re the one whodunit. Avoid suspicion as you wait for the ship to arrive at port to make your escape. This game is very short and replayable. Choices matter. No No $15, sale recommended
