General Discussion How would you put a spin on the Pokémon formula?

This is probably a dumb question but I've been struggling with this for a bit. How would you remake the Pokémon concept? What magic system would you introduce? What lore would you create? How would you put a spin on things?

For example, the pokeball. How would you capture the extraordinary creatures in your world? Would you capture them at all? Would you summon them through wands or maybe sacrifice? Would you befriend them with tea or earn their respect through combat?

General Discussion how do you guys decide what each ring of a magic circle means?

Thumbnail
gallery
47 Upvotes

been thinking about this a lot since i made a magic circle generator. like does the outer ring hold the spell in? do the star points mean how strong it is? do the symbols actually spell something out?

my take so far is outer ring = binding, symbols = what the spell does, star points = power, and the little orbiting circles = extra casters or ingredients. a broken outer ring meaning the spell goes wrong seems like a fun plot hook too

do your circles have to be exact or can people improvise them?

(pics are from the generator, theres a free version if anyone wants to sketch circles for their system, link in comments)

General Discussion What are the abilities of your main character.

Let's be honest. No one likes being average. Usually the main character has either a debilitating curse that is secretly over powered and makes them a demi-god.

They have a unique ability that seems useless but is secretly broken.

Or they're just straight up given the strongest type of magic from birth.

But what's usually rare thing to see is just an average person with an average ability and they have to find ways to use the basic stuff in a creative manner.

I'm curious as the route you take for the main character of your story/world.

System Help Magic System Based on Good/Evil Help

I’ve been developing for almost a year now this magic system in this new, modern world I’m also making. The power system is based on good & evil but - spoilers ahead, be warned - that’s actually related angels & demons.

This power system isn’t something you “awaken”. Rather, it’s something you are blessed, or cursed with.
The first one, called “The Order”, is a power given to rearrange the world. It is mostly defensive and utilitary.
In order to be used, you have to sacrifice technology, humanity’s doing (from metals like rings and jewlry to cyberware like cellphones, computers, even drones and cars and so forth…). You’re then filled with the power of the order and can use its abilities.
The Order is, in fact, something you can use as long as you’ve got sources to give you power. Imagine fighting inside a futuristic city. That’s almost infinite resources to power yourself.

The second one, called “The Ruin”, is a power given to destroy the world. It is mostly offensive and corrupting.
To use this one, however, you have to sacrifice your own humanity, corrupting your own self to use abilities.
It’s far more “powerful” when it comes to damage, but more risking as well. By corrupting yourself, you have a chance to become a Corrupted Creature without any trace of humanity left on you.
You can, however, reduce the costs by sacrificing (turning into dust) anything. Alive beings reduce the cost a lot more than just objects.
There’s also a table of what can happen to you when you’ve used too much power, forcing you to constantly destroy things.
Once you reach the limit, however, you’re obligated to roll a Mental Resistance test. In this situation, it works just like Death Saving Throws. If you’re successful three times, you stay as a human. If not, you become a Corrupted Creature.
Your Corruption limits usually lower when you take a complete short or long rest.

There’s also a third kind of “magic”. Which isn’t actually magic. Some humans have just developed the ability to use their adrenaline in such a way that they’ve become far more capable to react against enemies.
This one is called “The Adrenaline”. By fuelling tension on your body, you’re able to react faster to anything. It lets you adapt faster, it’s reactive but also exhausting.
It responds to danger. So, as long as you’re in danger, fighting, receiving damage or seeing your teammates suffer too (maybe even dying), your adrenaline gauge will go up.
However, if you let it build up too much and the fight ends, you’ll suffer according to how high it was. It’s a high risk and high reward capability

Every one of these three options have their own themed abilities. I’ve built like 20 for each.

Now, I’m almost satisfied with what I’ve got so far, but do you guys have any tips or even critiques to make it better?

General Discussion NEED SMALL HELP FROM THE COMMUNITY!

Post image
40 Upvotes

Guys, I'm gonna need some help with this. Any help will be much much much appreciated!

I'm building a system inspired by MHA's quirks for sonic characters, Because the power system for sonic is so vague, and obscure, I'd rather try and do it myself, with the help of you guys.

What would you guys wanna have the "quirk" of this power system, called? The thing which explains why sonic is so fast, and why some characters (like silver) have the abilities they do.

Drop some names that would fit, that sounds good, punchy, and sonic the hedgehog-y!

As I've said, any help will be appreciated! Have a good day, afternoon, evening, and night!

And also if you want, maybe tell me if we should stick with quirks, but that might feel borrowed and maybe even lazy but who knows I'm just doing this because I'm desperate and tired of sleeping restlessly.

General Discussion Space powers are underrated!!

Usually any word contains space Powers time Powers exist too they are really connected things but somehow time skills very high above space powers but I think that because they don't use space to their full potential so I'm going to say some implication of space power I have thought of

First the classic space band

You can now increase the distance between your opponent and a specific point, and their movement will appear very slow, while in reality the distance has become longer. Conversely, by decreasing the distance between you and a specific point, you can move at an super speed.

You can control the size to shrink or enlarge things.

One of the best ideas I came up with is reducing dimensions to two or less. Even if you return to how you were before, if you haven't gone crazy after being in a 2D world and returning to a 3D one, I don't know what it will do for you.You can take it a step further and make you zero-dimensional, which would cause you to cease to existe.

You can even upgrade yourself to higher spatial dimensions, and now try to repel his attacks.

There's an application on the slightly elementary side which is the enhancement of three-dimensional perception. We perceive the world in three dimensions, but we see it in 2D. Boom! Now you see in 3D. Now, try stabbing him from behind.

Without mentioning the basic applications, instant teleportation, creating space portals, creating sub-dimensionals

the difference between time and space isn't big

The Concordance Codex — A Hand-Drawn Magic System Built Around 27 Forces

After a tremendous amount of drawing, experimenting, revising and trying to make sense of my own ideas, I've finally completed something I've been working on for quite a while: The Concordance Codex. It's a collection of six original hand-drawn illustrations, presented across seven images because one of the drawings can be turned upside down to reveal an entirely different interpretation. Together, these drawings represent my attempt to construct an interconnected system of magic, morality, philosophy and the fundamental forces of existence. Everything is organized through colors, symbols, geometry and the relationships that emerge when different forces interact.

The original idea began with what I call The Concordance Web, a ten-sided geometric structure representing ten fundamental elemental colors surrounding a central Void. Each color represents a different aspect of existence, and its position determines how closely it relates to the others. Blue lines represent elemental alliances, while pink and black lines represent increasingly powerful disagreements and oppositions. These relationships range from Congruence and Consonance, which describe different degrees of harmony, to Dissonance, Dislike and eventually Disdain. The closer two elements are within the original cycle, the more naturally they're inclined to cooperate. Elements farther apart tend to produce greater friction, although those disagreements can sometimes result in something meaningful.

One of the most important aspects of the Web is that it can also be interpreted upside down, becoming The Discordance Net. Both interpretations share exactly the same geometry, but their meanings change depending on how the system is approached. Moving clockwise generally represents constructive processes that encourage integration and creation, while moving counterclockwise generally represents destructive processes that encourage separation and corruption. However, direction doesn't automatically determine morality. A destructive action might be necessary to end something harmful, just as a seemingly constructive action might be performed with terrible intentions. The words and intentions involved matter just as much as the direction itself.

As I developed the system further, I realized that some of the original colors contained multiple forces that deserved independent identities. Water, Air and Mind originally shared Blue, but I've since separated them into Blue, Light Blue and Dark Blue. Earth and Nature were also separated, with Earth becoming Dark Green while Nature retained Green. Architecture underwent a similar transformation, eventually becoming Wood and Metal, represented by Brown and Tan. These distinctions allowed me to give each force its own identity without abandoning the relationships established by the original Web.

Two additional forces emerged through a drawing called The Discordance Nadir. Dark Red represents Blood, while Red Orange represents Lava. These became the only two Exceptional Forces in the Codex, occupying a unique position beyond the original elemental divisions. Blood carries associations with life and mortality, while Lava represents a particularly powerful interaction between elemental processes. Their appearances in the Nadir eventually helped expand the entire Codex into its current arrangement of twenty-seven forces.

To make sense of everything, I developed several different methods of organizing the system. The Concordance Spectrum arranges the original twenty-one forces according to their magical and chromatic relationships, while The Concordance Taxonomy organizes those same forces according to a more conceptual, scientific-style classification. The Spectrum emphasizes their relationships as colors, whereas the Taxonomy emphasizes what each force actually represents. Neither is intended to replace the other. They're different ways of examining the same underlying system.

The expanded twenty-seven-force model now uses five classifications. Elemental Forces represent distinct aspects of the physical or metaphysical world, such as Fire and Water. Structural Forces govern how existence is organized, including Gravity and Spacetime. Artificial Intelligence also belongs here because of its ability to process information and organize systems, while Agency represents choice and deliberate action. Fundamental Forces are Magic, Science and Spirituality, which represent different approaches to understanding and interacting with existence. Blood and Lava remain the two Exceptional Forces, while the remaining category is perhaps the most unusual of them all.

Transcendental Forces are those that extend beyond the ordinary boundaries of the individual symbols. The four foundational colors of the Concordance Web are Black, White, Pink and Dark Blue, representing Darkness, Light, Love and Mind. Within the mythology of the Codex, these forces have the potential to transcend time and space. White is particularly interesting because it can be represented by the negative space within the original decagon itself. Clear represents Paradox, an invisible element associated with the space surrounding and permeating the symbols. Gray represents Void, which I classify as Transcendental because it embodies nothingness rather than a conventional element. Lime Green represents Evil, symbolized by the seemingly infinite surface extending beyond the artwork, while All Colors represents the Spectrum itself: the collective totality of the forces.

The final drawing is called The Spiral of Discordant Harmony, and it brings all twenty-seven forces together into one continuous arrangement. It begins at the center with Blood, moves outward through Fire and Lava, and continues through every other force until it reaches Spectrum at the outermost end. Every force has its own circle, color and individually designed symbol. The labels are also color-coded according to their classifications, allowing the drawing to communicate how the forces are categorized while preserving their unique identities. The spiral is meant to express how seemingly unrelated aspects of existence can form one interconnected whole, even when some of those aspects naturally contradict one another.

There's also a moral and interpersonal dimension to the project that I've been developing through playing cards and YouTube playlists. Human behaviors such as Kindness and Cruelty can be examined through the different elements, showing how the same action or emotion might manifest under different circumstances. The idea is to explore how morality interacts with the forces without reducing individual colors to being inherently good or evil. A force can be constructive in one situation and destructive in another, depending on how it is expressed.

I should clarify that this is a personal symbolic and philosophical system, not a claim that I've discovered twenty-seven scientifically established forces of nature. I'm interested in the overlap between worldbuilding, artistic interpretation and the ways people give meaning to things. A lot of the enjoyment has come from discovering relationships I hadn't originally considered, then figuring out whether those relationships actually make sense within the rules I've established. Some ideas have survived the entire process, while others have been completely changed or discarded.

What I've enjoyed most is that the Codex has gradually become more than a collection of colored symbols. It's developed into a framework for thinking about how things cooperate, how they oppose one another and how both harmony and conflict can contribute to the same larger structure. The finished illustrations are the result of a lot of trial and error, and I'm genuinely happy to finally share the completed collection.

I'd love to hear what people who enjoy developing magic systems think about the concept. I'm particularly interested in whether the distinction between the different force classifications makes sense, and whether the idea of constructive and destructive relationships existing within the same geometry has potential for a larger fictional universe.

System Help Need ideas for my power system

I need help with the power system in my novel.
Originally I was going with magic and people specializing in different elements with talented characters specializing in up to 4 elements.
Characters can have a talent in the air element but still able to learn other elements like earth and/or water but progress slower because their main talent lies in the air element.

People have recently been pointing out how generic magic systems are like in black clover which has me wondering about my magic system as well and when comparing to the different elements of my world, I'm thinking I can do something better or try to invent something completely new that complements my world. For example there's an aspect in my world that lets people make pacts with different beings and entities in exchange for power and another allowing gods to choose characters to be their 'vessels' and Harness some of their powers, strength, form and whatnot.

What I need help with are ideas on developing
something or creating something that aligns with some of these aspects because I feel like the basic magic concept doesn't stand out and won't really complement some of the aspects in my world

Edit: I’ve taken power systems In other animes into consideration and some have inspired me like heavenly restriction in jjk is what inspired the heaven and hell pacts, the heavenly pact allowing gods to notice you and offer it to you and vice versa. Another one being solo leveling, Tbate and ORV. Any opinion is welcomed, please.

Edit 2: another aspect I considered adding was the mana core(s), it’s how the characters would progress before reaching their pinnacle. Everyone starts from the Black core- Red core - Orange core- Yellow core- silver core and with the white core being the pinnacle and not everyone ever gets there, on their own at least.

System Help Need ideas for my magic system

Basically the idea of the story is that the original creator of the universe died or left and 3 beings are trying to keep the universe stable by embodying a specific concept.

One stabilizes the characters
One stabilizes the setting
One stabilizes the story
But none of the 3 are perfect at this and that leads to cool worldbuilding stuff.

Anyways i want to create powers based on each of these three elements. I want these powers to not only exist on the grand scale of the world but on a smaller scale so that other characters can use it.

Im mostly having trouble coming up with ideas for the setting magic but I’m open to hearing any ideas for the other two!

Mechanics My Power System Inner

Inner- the personal expression of your Konpaku(Soul energy), Inners are fueled by Konpaku.

Edit: Forgot 4 Inner classes

  1. Attribute Class Type: Provide manipulation, creation or transformation of physical element, energy or body stats.

Example: Condensing the World to Steel

  1. Conceptual Class Type: Abilities that manipulate space, ideas, or causality, and can bypass normal physical limit

Example: Severing the Ties that Bind

  1. Perception Class: Support/Non-combat sensory abilities dealing with tracking detection, and radar and information gathering. Example: Power of Truth

  2. Arbitor Class: Abilites that operate under strict karmic laws, and absolute conditions, and cannot be used freely, but their conditional output is high. Example: Power of Justice

Rules of Inners

  1. A person can only manifest 1 inner ability, unless their body contains multiple souls, in the case of the Main protaganist or Seishun.
  2. Manifesting an Inner requires Konpaku (Soul Energy), present in all living things (including animals). Strong-willed individuals naturally possess vastly more Konpaku.
  3. If a user completely depletes their Konpaku reservoir, or takes an influx their body can't handle their physical body starts to dissolve because soul energy is what allows living beings to physically exist in the world.
  4. Zanryu : If a user heavily imbues their Konpaku into an object or environment while applying their Inner, the effect lingers after the attack. Powerful Zanryu can persist even after the user’s death.
  5. Reikon Kyūshū(Recovery) - The opposite of Zanryu, this technique involes absorbing the lingering Konpaku in the environment, restoring the user's stamina, and health in general, however this ability can't be used while being attacked.
  6. Tamashii Kanchi(Detection) - This is another advanced application of Konpaku, this one allows you to detect others and pick out inner users from normal people. Inner users have more konpaku than regular people, the ability however requires you to close your eyes for a second and focus, before opening and breathing in, allowing you to detect inner users like a radar. If you are acquainted with someone's Konpaku, you can find them again by tuning it to that specific person's Konpaku, allowing you to track someone who's fleeing from you after a fight.
  7. Konpaku Clash - When 2 powerful Inners clash, their soul energy will directly cause friction with each other, creating a tug of war. In these cases, a more poweful inner doesn't equate to victory, factors can include, precision, efficiency, overall mastery, and mental fortitude.
  8. Despair Awakened Inners - These are cases in which someone fails the Gatebreaking process, succumbing to their mental blocks and entering the deepest despair, they become incredibly powerful, but lose all control or reason in most cases, however some can still retain thought. Their inner becomes a dark reflection and has a dark aura that can corrupt weak willed individuals, turning them into Despair Homunculi.
  9. Inner Resonance - This phenomena can occur to any inner user, as all inner users are connected, however some may have deeper connections to others, whether due to family ties, friendship, romance, these ties are stronger, and can result in inner resonance, during this state, the two individuals' souls are directly bonded, the damage they take is shared, they also recover konpaku faster, their inner abilities can combine to form combos as well.
  10. Naming: Inners that are given names get an exponential power bonus
  11. Base Inner - The base ability, or weakened state of your power, this is how some start out, but prodigies can awaken their inners through training/
  12. Awakened Inner - The second stage, many factors can unlock this state, either, trauma, intense training, etc, your inner has grown more powerful, but has not reached it's maximum capability yet.
  13. True Inner(Honshin) - The final stage of your inner, you can achieve this state after going through the Gatebreaking process and destroying the mental blocks in your mind to achieve this state, after unlocking this, it is permanent, your power will be increased to 100 percent capacity, when an already strong inner goes through this process, it can awaken supernatural power, thought to have been granted by the gods.
  14. Ultimate Soul Release: The absolute apex offensive maneuver of a Honshin. Extremely rare, god-tier geniuses can occasionally trigger this ultimate ability during their regular awakening state under extreme emotional pressure.
  15. Vengeful Curse: A powerful grudge unleashed by a dying opponent, that can increase depending on how strong the hate is. Can affect an enemy's very soul or in some cases kill them. This is how the mentor took out 2 of the elite soldiers in the first saga. The downside is that it prevents your soul from resting in the Spirit Side of The Land of Origin.
  16. Spiritual Vow/Contract- A mutual binding of Konapku between 2 living individuals. Participants weave their spiritual energy together to achieve massive bursts of power. The vow is unbreakable and has spiritual consequences if broken that are set by both parties.
  17. Absolute Resolve - When Konpaku spikes for a single moment due to the user's resolve reaching a tipping point.
  18. Death Embrace - When Konapku spikes due to the user being near death. The feeling that you might die causes a massive burst in power

Summary of the 4 Hopes in my Story, the 4 reincarnated heroes with Heavenly Inners born to save humanity from itself

Power of Will → Changes what can endure.

Power of Love → Changes what can connect.

Power of Justice → Changes what is permitted.

Power of Truth → Reveals and enforces what is real.

Four Hopes - The 4 Hopes' abilities.

1st - Power of Will- The power of will inner first off allows the user to be powered by their own self-sufficient will, granting increased strength, speed, and specifically durability, and resiliency. They will never lose this "will" and can infuse others with this special "will" in order to make them stronger and enhance their abilities. They can also remove willpower from others, draining their strength and stealing their willpower, in turn making the user stronger, however it is less effective on stronger-willed opponents, and vice-versa. The unique trait of this ability is that the user will always survive fatal attacks and heal from them, and survive things that normal people cannot. The user of this inner will always have the strongest will and determination that is unsurpassed by any mortal alive. The user can make willpower constructs. The Heavenly Limitation on this ability is that the user can only survive attacks with lethal intent.

2nd - Power of Love - This inner allows the user to be fueled by love, similar to power of will, granting them increased, strength, speed, durability, and stamina. Their "love" can be sent to others, rejuvenating them and healing them as well, due to the godlike power of this inner, it can also temporarily give dead souls physical form, allowing people to be temporarily revived, it can also bind souls to object via love. The unique trait of Power of Love is that it has the ability to control people on a mass scale via their "love" for the user, they will do anything for them and can carry out complex commands, the user can also partially use the abilities of the ones under their control. The user of this inner loves anyone and anything with the highest regard, regardless of whether they are good, evil, or morally gray. The user can make constructs out of love energy as well, shields of pure love that are nearly unbreakable. The Heavenly Limitation on this ability is that the user cannot directly attack enemies due to the nature of this inner.

3rd - Power of Truth - This inner allows the user to be fueled by the power of truth, granting the user the same enhanced abilities as the other 3 Heroes, specifically increased speed. The user of this inner can tell whether people are lying, if they are, a crushing weight formed by the user's soul energy will slowly crush the enemy, getting heavier with each lie, if the enemy tells the truth, the weight will dissipate. The user of this inner can manipulate truth itself, however it does not rewrite reality, instead, the user can only reveal or enforce truths that already exist, for example, if the user says the enemy's arm is injured, the injury will be exposed and will worsen.

4th - Power of Justice - This inner allows the user to be fueled by pure justice, granting them enhanced attributes, strength especially. The user of this inner has the power to induce laws, such as, you may not kill people, you may not kill me or attack me or, you may not use said ability. The user can induce 3 laws and only 3 laws onto a person, however the user can also put laws onto objects or animals. If one of those rules are broken, the offender is sent to a pocket dimension where a judge formed from the user's Konpaku energy will determine the offender's punishment, the more severe the law broken, the greater the punishment. If either 3 laws or 1 very severe law is broken, the offender automatically is granted the most severe punishment, Death by Penance, the judge will stare into the offender's eyes, reflecting all the pain they have caused people onto the offender exponentially, if they are weak-willed, this will kill them within a second or 2, but it causes greater torment to stronger willed individuals, slowly eating at them and burning the pain into their eyes. There are other punishments each divided into 5 levels, with the highest being Penance. The Heavenly Limitation on Power of Justice is that the rules it imposes cannot break reality or negatively affect it in any way.

Lore The Blackdunes Desert

The Setting

The Blackdunes is a desert of black sand that boils and churns with a great heat. With the consistency of tar, the sand is nearly thick enough to stand upon, yet will swallow anyone or anything without hesitation.

The Blackdunes is not an ordinary desert. Its strange nature makes every method of travel unpredictable, if not impossible. There is only one reliable way to travel it. Mecha of all shapes and sizes have been constructed in this world amd can travel the burning sands on one condition. A navigator; one possess the Sight and can read the hidden currents flowing under the sands. Upon these currents the sand grows firm and stable. Capable of holding the mecha.

And though these sands are too hot to even touch without one's hands blistering up, there are strange creatures burried deep underneath, swimming through like an ocean. These creatures have unusual body plans and reflective scales that keep them cool.

Pirates and honest sandsailors alike dredge the depths for these unique creatures. Among the most prized are Crush Snails, whose shells can be ground into a fine blue powder with extraordinary properties.

The Isles Corasoa

Above the roiling sands are island oases that blow around on a psychic wind. When the settlers came, they created anchors that keep the islands in place as to allow for easier navigation.

Though it is said the nomads once controlled the islands to fly them across the sands, this magic is no more. And the nomads have been all but driven out.

Influence

Influence is a psychic phenomenon that originates within the mind and flows through the eyes.

All of humanity, along with other forms of sentient life, possesses some degree of Influence. Every sentient being has some means of both exerting and receiving it.

Human Influence

For humans, eye contact produces subtle psychic pressure upon another person. This pressure is not one-directional: both parties influence one another simply by looking into each other's eyes.

Under ordinary circumstances, Influence is gentle, operating through suggestion rather than direct control. Its effects are difficult to detect and are generally indistinguishable from a person's own thoughts, feelings, and inclinations.

Influence is therefore both pervasive and insidious. People are constantly affecting one another without necessarily knowing it.

Psychic Resistance

Every mind possesses a degree of Psychic Resistance, a mental defense that reduces the amount of Influence it receives.

A person's ability to exert Influence and their ability to resist it are closely related, though not necessarily identical. Weakening one's Psychic Resistance can increase one's capacity to exert Influence, but it also leaves one more vulnerable to the Influence of others.

The Sight

The Sight is the ability to perceive otherwise invisible flows of Influence.

Most people cannot consciously perceive Influence. Those possessing the Sight, however, can visualize heavy concentrations of psychic pressure and observe the ways in which it moves through their surroundings.

Reading the Sands

Hidden within the Blackdunes are currents that allow travel from one oases to another. These currents cannot be navigated through ordinary observation alone.

A sandsailor with the Sight can perceive these currents within the sand and identify the paths that will carry a vessel safely across.

Without the Sight, a sandsailor cannot reliably determine if they will carry the weight of a mecha or swallow it whole.

The Crush Snail

Crush Snails are strange creatures found in the Blackdunes. Their shells can be crushed into a fine blue powder.

When ingested by someone who possesses the Sight, this powder grants them the ability to exert a much greater degree of control over the Blackdunes and its inhabitants.

The navigator may Influence the strange atmospheric phenomena that occur over the desert, affect the behavior of the strange beings that inhabit the depths, or generate new currents in the sands rather than merely perceiving and following existing ones.

The last ability is particularly significant. A navigator who can create currents is no longer limited to the routes that naturally occur.

Glass Focuses

There are ways to strengthen a person's ability to exert Influence over others but it typically requires weakening one's own Psychic Resistance. This is the factor that reduces the power influence has over a person, but also weakens the influence that that person exudes.

Glasses as Psychic Extensions

Over time, smaller groups and hidden organizations have developed a way to increase psychic influence and resistance through specially prescribed glasses, known as Glass Focuses.

These glasses can be configured to amplify the wearer's ability to exert psychic pressure over others, strengthen the wearer's ability to resist incoming Influence. But they cannot do both.

Card Magic

Gold and silver are known to absorb influence by pulling it directly from their surroundings. When magic users gather in groups, these metals will draw in their psychic energy causing mental fog or painful migraines or even strange hallucinations. The more people in the group, the more potentially powerful the spell will be.

Gold absorbs positive energy. Silver absorbs negative energy. And when "veins" are cut into them, these noble metals can be used in spiritual magic. Veins acting as context to change the energy into something useful or detrimental.

Petals

Petals are gold or silver cards inlaid with either veins of gold or silver. Some gold cards have gold veins and some have silver veins. Some silver cards have silver veins and some have gold veins.

By connecting these veins practitioners summon specific elements of spiritual energy. Be it to heal, to harm, or to communicate, the connection of these energies creates a sort of psychic computer that executes simple programming to cause effects in the physical world.

The energies grind against one a other to produce change in the overall power of the assembly of cards.

Wizards, Rings of Power, and Concepts

I’ve been working on a western magic system and wanted to share the foundation of it here. The idea is to make magic feel more like an actual field of study, almost like science, rather than something that simply relies on mana reserves or learning stronger spells.
I’m still developing it, but here’s how it works so far.

1. Wizards
Wizards are terrifying entities who strike fear into almost everyone. However, crazy is only relative. One could argue that those who practice magic have hearts as pure as the sun.
Why? Because wizards relentlessly pursue the truth.
To a wizard, there is only knowledge. Knowledge is power, and the pursuit of it is what defines them. Whether they’re studying the nature of life, death, souls, space, or the fundamental laws of existence, what matters is understanding how something works.
This doesn’t mean every wizard is evil or that they lack morality. It’s simply that their pursuit of knowledge can take them to places ordinary people would never dare to go.
A wizard might spend centuries studying a creature that most people would consider a monster, not because they want to kill it, but because they want to understand how it came to exist in the first place.
And this brings me to another aspect of the system.
Most supernatural creatures can trace their roots to magicraft. Over countless years, wizards have conducted experiments on living organisms, magical phenomena, souls, and countless other things. Some creatures were deliberately created, others were accidental results, and some developed from the descendants of earlier experiments.
To a wizard, a supernatural creature might not be a monster at all. It might simply be an interesting specimen on an experimental table.
Of course, not every supernatural creature has to be a direct creation of a wizard. The point is that magicraft has played a significant role in the existence and development of the supernatural world.

2. Magicraft
Magicraft is essentially the science of magic. It involves studying magical phenomena, understanding their underlying principles, and using that knowledge to construct spells.
There are three important components to it.
Magical scripts: These are the fundamental instructions and relationships used to manipulate magic. They aren’t necessarily physical writings or symbols. Their true nature is metaphysical, although they can be represented through runes, diagrams, and other forms.
Magical formulas: These describe how different scripts interact with one another. They determine the relationships between the individual components of a magical operation.
Magical models: These are complete arrangements of scripts and formulas designed to produce a particular magical effect. A spell is essentially the execution of such a model.
For example, a Fire Arrow requires more than simply producing fire. The model must account for the formation of the flame, its shape, stability, direction, and the conditions necessary for it to reach its target.
The more advanced the model, the more complex the relationships it can account for.
This is where the difference between an apprentice and a wizard becomes apparent.

3. Apprentices and Single-Line Magic
Apprentices are capable of using magic, but their understanding is limited. They generally rely on what I call single-line magic.
Think of it as a simplified version of an advanced equation.
An apprentice learns a sequence of magical instructions and follows it to produce a particular effect. The sequence is relatively simple, and each instruction follows the preceding one.
For example, an apprentice casting Fire Arrow might follow a predetermined process involving ignition, shaping, and release.
The problem is that the apprentice has little room to modify the structure. If they want to make the arrow significantly more powerful, they might struggle to do so without destabilizing the spell. If they want to transform Fire Arrow into Fire Spear, they may have to learn an entirely different spell.
They can perform magic, but they don’t possess the necessary framework to freely manipulate complex magical models.
A true wizard is different.

4. Rings of Power
Rings of Power are extremely important to any wizard. However, they aren’t physical rings. They’re metaphysical structures composed of highly compressed magical scripts, formulas, and connections.
They appear spherical when perceived through magical senses, almost like rings compressed into an orb. This appearance is where their name comes from.
Despite being described as blank, they contain numerous magical formulas and connections. Blank doesn’t mean empty. Rather, the ring provides the underlying framework into which magical models can be introduced and executed.
Think of it as a sophisticated system capable of accommodating and manipulating complex magical equations.
When a wizard casts Fire Arrow, they introduce the model into their Ring of Power. The ring integrates it with its existing scripts and formulas, allowing the wizard to construct a much more advanced version of the spell.
This is why a First Ring Wizard can cast a Fire Arrow that is countless times more powerful than an apprentice’s version.
The difference isn’t necessarily the amount of magical energy involved. It’s how effectively that energy is organized and utilized.
A wizard can regulate the arrow’s combustion, compression, acceleration, stability, and other characteristics simultaneously. An apprentice, on the other hand, is limited by the simplicity of their model.
Another advantage is that wizards can disassemble and reconstruct magical models.
For example, a wizard can take the fundamental model behind Fire Arrow and modify its structure to produce Fire Spear. The underlying principles remain similar, but the arrangement of the formulas changes.
The wizard can also develop other variations without necessarily having to construct every spell from scratch.
However, this doesn’t mean that any spell can be transformed into anything imaginable. The wizard must understand the underlying model and possess the necessary scripts and formulas to support the modification.

5. How Wizards Progress
Wizards progress by enriching their Rings of Power.
They conduct experiments, discover new magical relationships, develop formulas, and integrate their findings into their rings. Over time, the rings become increasingly complex.
However, simply adding more scripts isn’t enough. Every new formula must be compatible with the existing structure. A poorly integrated formula can destabilize the ring and potentially damage it.
Eventually, a ring reaches a breakpoint.
At this point, its internal structure has become so complex and compressed that it can no longer accommodate further enrichment without undergoing a fundamental change.
The wizard must then establish another ring.
The new ring is not an independent structure that operates separately from the first. Both rings are part of one unified magical system.
Think of them like magnets or cogs in a machine. They attract one another and maintain an extremely high resonance, allowing their internal structures to interact.
This is what makes the second ring so important.
A Second Ring Wizard can distribute magical operations between two resonating rings. One ring might regulate the underlying energy conversion of a spell, while the other handles its shape, movement, or stability.
Because the rings operate in parallel, they can execute complex operations that would be impossible to sustain within a single ring.
The result is significantly more powerful and stable magic.
Wizards continue this process, enriching their structures until they reach the next breakpoint and form another ring.
This continues through the Third and Fourth Rings.
Each additional ring introduces another layer of complexity, but it also makes maintaining the entire structure increasingly difficult. Every ring must remain compatible with the others, and their resonance must remain stable.
By the Fourth Ring, a wizard possesses an extraordinarily sophisticated magical structure.
However, they eventually encounter a problem that cannot be solved simply by adding another parallel ring.

6. The Fifth Ring and Intersectional Rune Diagrams
The Fifth Ring represents a fundamental change in how a wizard’s magic operates.
Up to this point, the rings have existed as separate structures connected through resonance. They communicate and cooperate, but they don’t genuinely intersect.
Trying to force highly compressed rings to intersect directly would cause immense instability. Their internal structures would reject one another, potentially destroying the entire magical foundation.
To overcome this, Fifth Ring Wizards employ something called an Intersectional Rune Diagram (IRD).
An IRD allows a wizard to separate their rings while simultaneously establishing genuine intersections between them.
However, this cannot be accomplished through magical scripts and formulas alone.
The wizard must first understand a Concept.

7. Concepts
Concepts are the governing principles of existence. Think of them as laws that determine how certain aspects of reality operate.
They aren’t ordinary magical formulas, nor are they simply more advanced spells.
For example, a wizard studying fire might spend centuries researching combustion, heat, and energy conversion. They could develop countless formulas capable of producing increasingly powerful flames.
However, understanding fire magic doesn’t necessarily mean understanding the Concept of Heat.
The latter involves comprehending the underlying principle itself, rather than merely learning how to manipulate its manifestations.
Other examples of Concepts could include Motion, Distance, Decay, Growth, Reflection, Equilibrium, and Continuity.
A wizard might spend thousands of years studying one of these Concepts without truly understanding it.
The important distinction is that studying a Concept and comprehending a Concept are two different things.
To reach the Fifth Ring, a wizard only needs to grasp a sliver of a Concept. Their understanding remains extremely shallow, amounting to less than even one percent of its complete nature.
Nevertheless, that tiny fragment is enough to serve as a conceptual thread.
The wizard uses these threads as connection points through which their rings can intersect without rejecting one another.
The Concept provides the governing principle, while the IRD determines how the rings are connected.
This is an extremely dangerous process. A slight error can destabilize the entire structure. If the intersection fails, the wizard might lose their Fifth Ring, damage their existing rings, or even die.
This is why reaching the Fifth Ring isn’t simply a matter of accumulating enough knowledge or magical energy. The wizard must achieve a genuine breakthrough in their understanding of existence.

8. The Sixth and Seventh Rings
After reaching the Fifth Ring, the wizard continues enriching their magical structure.
However, progression now requires more than the development of magical scripts and formulas. The wizard must also deepen their understanding of the Concept supporting their IRD.
Both aspects must develop together.
A wizard with extensive magical knowledge but insufficient conceptual understanding might struggle to stabilize increasingly complex intersections. Likewise, a wizard who understands a Concept but lacks the necessary magical framework cannot fully utilize that understanding.
The Sixth Ring is formed when the existing IRD reaches another breakpoint and the wizard successfully incorporates an additional ring into the intersecting structure.
The Seventh Ring follows the same general principle.
However, each additional ring makes the IRD increasingly complex. The wizard must maintain the integrity of the rings, their resonance, and every conceptual intersection connecting them.
By the Seventh Ring, the wizard has developed an extraordinary understanding of their chosen Concept.
But there is still a limitation.
They haven’t fully comprehended it.
Their understanding remains incomplete, which means their use of the Concept is still restricted to the principles they have managed to grasp.
Eventually, they reach another breakpoint.
This time, however, adding another ring through partial comprehension is no longer sufficient.
To advance, the wizard must completely understand their Concept.

9. The Eighth Ring: Conceptual Authority
The Eighth Ring is the point at which a wizard fully comprehends a Concept and gains their own authority over it.
This is not simply another breakthrough in magical complexity. It represents a fundamental change in the wizard’s relationship with magic.
Before the Eighth Ring, a wizard studies a Concept, understands portions of it, and uses those fragments to construct increasingly sophisticated magical models.
At the Eighth Ring, the wizard has completely grasped the Concept and can exercise authority over its principles.
Consider a wizard who has fully comprehended the Concept of Heat.
A lower-ring wizard might need to construct a complicated magical model to regulate heat transfer between two objects.
An Eighth Ring Wizard could potentially achieve a similar effect by directly governing the relevant thermal relationship through their authority.
The difference is that the latter no longer needs to reproduce every underlying relationship through ordinary magical formulas.
Their authority allows them to manipulate the governing principle itself.
However, this doesn’t mean they become omnipotent or automatically control every manifestation of heat throughout existence. Their authority is still limited by the Concept they have mastered, the power they can bring to bear, and the resistance of opposing forces.
Nor does mastering one Concept mean that the wizard automatically understands every related Concept.
Someone who fully comprehends Heat doesn’t automatically possess complete authority over Fire, Light, Motion, or Energy.
Concepts may be related, but they aren’t necessarily identical.
Furthermore, a Concept exists independently of any wizard. Comprehending it doesn’t mean creating it or becoming its sole owner. Another wizard could potentially study and master the same Concept independently.
What matters is that the wizard has developed their own authority through complete understanding.

10. The Fundamental Difference Between the Rings
The progression can be summarized as follows:
Apprentice: Relies on simple, predetermined magical sequences.
First Ring: Gains the ability to construct and manipulate complex magical models.
Second Ring: Establishes parallel resonance between two rings.
Third Ring: Expands the complexity of parallel magical operations.
Fourth Ring: Reaches the limits of advanced parallel structures.
Fifth Ring: Uses a sliver of a Concept to establish an Intersectional Rune Diagram.
Sixth Ring: Expands the IRD and deepens conceptual comprehension.
Seventh Ring: Approaches the limits of what can be achieved through partial comprehension.
Eighth Ring: Fully comprehends a Concept and gains authority over it.
The important thing is that the difference between the rings isn’t merely quantitative.
A Second Ring Wizard isn’t simply twice as powerful as a First Ring Wizard. They possess a fundamentally different structure that allows them to perform operations a single ring cannot support.
Likewise, the difference between the Fourth and Fifth Rings isn’t simply another increase in magical power. The Fifth Ring introduces conceptual intersections, changing how the wizard’s entire magical structure operates.
And the Eighth Ring represents another major leap, as the wizard moves from using fragments of a governing principle to possessing authority derived from complete comprehension.

11. A Few Important Points
There are a few things I want to emphasize about the system.
First, magical energy is important, but it isn’t the sole measure of a wizard’s power. Knowledge, understanding, and the complexity of their Rings of Power are equally important.
Second, two wizards of the same ring can possess radically different abilities. A wizard specializing in biological magicraft might have an entirely different set of magical models from one who specializes in spatial phenomena. Their rings may be structurally comparable without containing the same knowledge.
Third, research has practical value. A new discovery can improve existing spells, create entirely new magical possibilities, or even change how an entire branch of magicraft is practiced.
Fourth, progression isn’t guaranteed. A wizard can spend centuries enriching their ring without reaching the understanding required for a breakthrough. Likewise, someone might possess enormous magical reserves yet remain unable to advance because their knowledge is insufficient.
Finally, conceptual comprehension cannot be obtained simply by memorizing information. A wizard must genuinely understand the underlying principle. This is especially important for the Fifth and Eighth Rings.
Ultimately, the foundation of the system is simple.
Wizards pursue knowledge, and knowledge allows them to manipulate magic. Their Rings of Power provide the structure through which that knowledge becomes increasingly complex and effective. Concepts represent the governing principles underlying existence, and comprehending them allows a wizard to transcend the limitations of ordinary magicraft.
The more a wizard understands, the more they can do.
And the terrifying thing about wizards is that no matter how much they discover, they will never stop asking questions.

General Discussion My advice for writing magic: consider the opportunity cost it has on the story

theirs a lot of ways this manifest, prevalent healing/resurrections allow for extreme fights but take away the long term narrative weight of injuries cus you know even if you see a guy get cut in half he will be fine next chapter being one of the more commonly known examples

though one of the most common i see is the scale of your settings power, having a super powerful god fighting can be cool, but if a character is casually tanking planet buster hits, it also means you have removed pretty much any opportunity for creative use of the environment , because realistically nothing but the other op gods attacks can hurt them, so trying to knock them into hazards, drop them off a cliff, or make tactical use of the environment go out the window, the lava you threw them in might as well be a hot tub, you cant try to limit their big sword by fighting in a confined space because they can simply cleave threw the wall like it wasent their ect

Lore History of the Wake

Throughout history people have fallen asleep to never wake again, only to exist in a state of dream until death came for them soon after. This phenomenon was rare and most importantly, poorly understood. Cultures throughout history came up with simple explanations and stories to help themselves repress this horrid happening. Demons, fairies, spirits, and most importantly links to personal failure of character were used to frighten children and escape the very confusing and deep fear of that which we couldn't understand.

In the age of enlightenment, the occasional alienist would theorize the reason for this strange happening and the peculiar events that always seem to occur nearby were recorded finally. Failures of memory, weakness in judgement, nightmares, hallucinations, delusions and other mental phenomena were acknowledged for the first time being connected to these events.

But it wasn't until the 1970s, a time of new age mysticism and technological progress, where the answers finally came. Studies into the brain revealed that the mind, during sleep, could enter a state of connection with those nearby. But more importantly, they would reach out to minds also in this state. This state can be reached only rarely and when it is, the body starts consuming itself to gain more energy for the brain to strengthen and widen this connection. Eventually killing itself in this pursuit.

These Sleepers however, for a very short time, are able to achieve collective thinking and abilities that don't reflect our understanding of the brain. Infecting nearby minds temporarily, causing mental degradation, sensory distortions, even zombification in some cases. But these end when the brain dies.

Government shadow organizations turned to researching this far more deeply. And for nearly a decade, much was learned and with little consequence. Through the use of drugs and medications the Sleepers could survive much longer and we could even communicate with them. The Sleepers, from then on, were used for communication, storage of information, and a great assortmentof strange abilities. But in 1985, the Wake awoke.

Researchers wanted to use the brains of the dead as materials for new sleepers and so they began a project under the eye of the government. But when the first dead woke, so did the rest. The worlds dead began to wake up, not as the people they once were. But something else. Something whole malicious and hungry.

The Wake is the name for the greater horde of the undead. The Shiners, as they are individually called, are zombies in the most literal sense. They bite, scratch, and kill with no regard. And when you die, regardless of your interactions with them, you become one of them.

Humanity is on the brink of extinction. These creatures are dangerous and extremely hard to kill. Even if the brain is gone, something is deeply linked to their nervous system. And so unless they are burned to blown to pieces, they continue their onslaught.

General Discussion Which one makes RPG games more interesting? Multipliers or Milestones?

Greetings my fellow fans, today/tonight I will be asking you all which one do you think is more interesting for your average rpg fantasy games? The classic multiplier or a milestone system?

You see I been experimenting with my individual power system methods recently and I made a second system called Prism energy that relies on a milestone system which could add some flair to the usual rpg system

Here is what I have so far, I'll give you all the basic premise of what they are about and save you the long version unless you have questions.

Light energy: Multiplies overall stats based on the number of your level for a short time

Prism energy: Grants an ability once one of your stats reaches a milestone. (Example, Mind stat reaches 5 unlocks first psychic ability, strength stat reaches 10 unlocks enhanced throw.)

I am curious to hear your thoughts and have a great day/night. Stay tune for more wonderful ideas from...ME!~

General Discussion Justifying creation

So I may have backed myself into a corner by basing my whole system on an destruction/offering method that limits the creation of things. I was curious to see how other's here justify the act of "creation" being regenerating or creating matter in their own worlds to get some perspective. Thanks!
