Saw this 16in M1 Max listed on fb marketplace for only 650 and couldn’t let it pass and I bought it. It has some scratches on the corners and a dent on the back but it’s a beast. 32gb ram and 1tb storage. I also got a Xbox elite controller 2 with it I think that’s just a crazy deal do you guys have any recommendations on what I should do with it? It’s my first pro so I don’t know much about them, the only bad thing about it is the battery capacity is at 83%.

Discussion M5 Pro 48GB for $2499 at Micro Center. Worth keeping?

• Upvotes

So I picked up the 14" M5 Pro (18/20 core, 48GB RAM, 1TB) from Micro Center for $2499, about $2582 after tax.

Wasn't even planning on upgrading, but my M1 Pro started having display issues. I had already ordered the 24GB M5 Pro from Amazon for $2069, but saw this one for $430 more before tax and figured why not. Microcenter also has lower taxes(not sure why but technically it was 377 more when comparing prices after tax)

I'm a developer, usually have a bunch of IDEs, terminals, browser tabs, etc. open. My work M3 Pro with 18GB is constantly hitting yellow memory pressure with 6GB+ swap. Also want to mess around with local AI stuff eventually. Planning to keep this for at least 5 years.

Was pretty excited at the store, but now it's just sitting unopened lol. I think I'm just annoyed I had to spend $2k+ on a laptop when I wasn't planning to.

Would you guys keep the 48GB or save the money and go with 24GB? Also curious if $2499 is actually a good deal for this config.

Purchased M3 Max 64/1TB 14in from BackMarket a few months ago from the states which my friend brought now and it's with me now.

So happy to have found and leveraged the deal - it cost me 1780 USD. I had missed M1 max 64/1TB 16in at 1050 usd which was better value for the money but this has better longevity and 14 inch, which means more portable (my preference was 14 inch only)

I'd been using Mac Pro 2019 i7 32GB version, with bootcamp (the only thing which I'll miss in this one)

All set to utilise to the max with local llm, and other projects. 🥳🥳

Tips 4K 60hz vs 1440p 144hz+ monitor

I am planning to buy a 27 inch monitor for my MacBook Pro M5 Pro.

My use cases are:

  1. Gaming (RPG story games like God of War, Witcher 3 or RE4R, Elden Ring etc.).

  2. Video Editing

  3. Coding

I have a budget constraint issue. So which one of the below options for a monitor would be better for me:

4k 60hz or 1440 144hz+?

I've heard scaling issues with rk and blurry texts with 2k (1440p). This is my first monitor so I am not sure what to do.

Hey folks,

I just got my first MacBook Pro after waiting four to five months.

Do you have any tips for the best immediate or long-term experience?

Note: I have used MacBook Pro for five years for office work, but this is my first personal device.

Discussion M5 Max or wait for M6 Launch

• Upvotes

I am in desperate need of a new laptop as my M1 Pro has started to no longer handle my workload and also the screen is starting to give out. I have used it daily for 5 years now and looking to get my next laptop to use for the next 5 years. I

Really tempted to go pick up a M5 Max (18-core CPU, 64GB unified memory, 2TB SSD) but not sure if price will go down when the M6 goes live or if the M6 variants will be better then the M5 Max.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I have tried to keep up with all of the news but do not want to pretend that I am well informed about the expectations for the launch.

Discussion Buying advice [Dilemma] CS Student: Asus Zenbook S 16 (Dual-boot Linux / Windows) vs. 16" MacBook Pro vs Thinkpad Z16 — Low-level dev for school & 16-inch form factor dilemma?

Hi everyone, I'm a CS student looking for a new daily driver laptop. I'm torn between two specific machines and would love some input from other developers to help me decide. I also hesitated about the thinkpad Z16 but it’s too hard find it in the market that’s the same problem for the asus, so if you have other recommendations even in not 16inch, I will appreciate.

My wishes : an oled screen, not a short laptop for my hands comfort, a good keyboard and a minimum of specs to enjoy it.

The screen size dilemma: why do I want a 16"? I'm pretty set on getting a 16-inch screen. My goal is real visual comfort so I can work from anywhere without needing an external monitor: clean split-screen setups (code editor on one side, terminal / docs on the other) without feeling cramped.

The catch is that while browsing the market, I feel like I'm missing out on tons of great 14-inch deals, where the selection is way broader and prices are significantly lower. For those of you working daily on a laptop: is insisting on a 16" genuinely worth the ergonomic upgrade, or would you advise against it due to portability, bulk, or weight?

My mindset and dev needs My curriculum involves a lot of low-level development: heavy C and C++. I'm almost done with C and probably won't touch it much afterward, so let's focus on C++. Also, I have access to my school's lab PCs, so technically speaking, edge cases or strict school-specific environment requirements aren't an issue. My mindset is simple: I refuse to feel limited or boxed in by my machine. I want to be able to pick up any tool or software on a whim. I don't know my exact specialization yet—I've considered AI/ML (Python, etc.), which runs great on a Mac, but I'm naturally curious and hate being restricted. If I suddenly want to experiment with something, I don't want macOS getting in my way.

I want a smooth experience without running into restrictive security layers or hardware/software compatibility headaches. I know that with Linux, I have complete control and can do whatever I want.

The two contenders

  1. Asus Zenbook S 16 This is the only PC alternative I've found that ticks all my boxes (thin chassis, centered keyboard without a numpad, gorgeous OLED display, and only 1.50 kg / 3.3 lbs).
  • My plan: Dual-boot it. I'd spend 95% of my time on the Linux partition (really want to test out Omarchy), keeping Windows strictly as a rare fallback if a niche need pops up.
  • The main draw: Zero technical barriers. It's native x86, Linux runs bare-metal, and there are zero compromises on low-level projects.
  1. Apple MacBook Pro 16" (M1 Pro) (Let me know if you recommend models above the M1, like M2/M3/M4, since the M1 has been out for a while now). The safe bet when it comes to hardware:
  • The main draw: Unmatched build quality, stunning display, top-tier keyboard and trackpad, insane battery life, and it never overheats or makes noise. The terminal CLI feels very close to Linux with mostly familiar commands.
  • My concerns: macOS and Apple Silicon architecture. I'm afraid of running into constant friction with strict system projects, low-level tooling, or x86/ELF binaries, having to endlessly juggle containers or VMs just to bypass OS restrictions.

My questions:

  1. 16" vs. 14": Does the screen real estate of a 16" justify higher prices and fewer options, or is a well-scaled 14" comfortable enough for daily split-screen development?
  2. To low-level devs on Apple Silicon: Has macOS ever bottlenecked you to the point where you regretted not having a native Linux machine, or is it painless to manage? (And would you still recommend an M1 Pro, or look at newer chips?)
  3. To Zenbook S 16 users (or people running Arch / Omarchy on recent hardware): How is Linux hardware support holding up (battery life, suspend/sleep, AMD GPU drivers)? Thanks in advance for your insights!

Help MBP 15" rejecting correct Wi-Fi password / WPA2 handshake issue with Redmi Android Hotspot

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue on my 15-inch MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey 12. When trying to connect to my phone's hotspot (Redmi Note 15 Pro+ 5G), the Mac keeps rejecting the correct password, stating it's invalid.

What I've already tried:

Cleared SystemConfiguration plist files (com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist, com.apple.eapolclient.plist, etc.) and reset network services.

Disabled "Support 6th generation standard" (Wi-Fi 6 / 802.11ax) on the Android hotspot settings.

Verified security is on WPA2-Personal.

It barely connected once after many attempts, but usually fails the handshake completely.

USB Tethering isn't natively supported on macOS without third-party drivers (like HoRNDIS). Has anyone faced this specific Wi-Fi handshake bug between macOS Monterey and modern Android hotspots? Any workarounds or terminal commands to force a connection?

Thanks!

Joined the Club! New MacBook Pro M5

I’ve never owned a laptop in my life and just recently bought the MacBook Pro m5 with pro chip. I realize this will be like going from the Stone Age to flying cars, so I’m trying to get an idea of maybe first important things to do, settings that are worth adjusting, customization tips, and just general tips/tricks.

I’m 31 and have been a long time iPhone user so not new to tech, it’s just that the new laptops seem to have so much to them that I don’t even know where to begin. I work in finance and do bookkeeping on the side, so the primary use for this will be work (spreadsheets, notes, communication) but I also would love to use it for personal things as I get more accustomed to what I can all do.

Any thoughts from long time MacBook users who took a shot on the new M5 pro?
