Locations, Budget, and Settings are all important things to include when asking for advice

Locations: You don't need to include your house address but closest major city and how far you are willing to travel.

Budget: "As cheaply as possible" is not a budget and is honestly the best way to waste money. Figure out an amount you are willing to spend.

Setting: LARP is a vast and expansive hobby. Not every game is about running around out in the woods pretending to be a rouge/knight/wizard. Let us know what you play or want to play.

An Official Discord, and Future.

Hello denizens of /r/LARP.
We as a subreddit have a small announcement as far as the future of this sub is concerned.
Last week we took part in the 2 day protest that was more or less site wide spanning thousands of subs as a way to show solidarity with app creators and to show the frustration with the administration of reddit and their poor handling and plans of upcoming updates.

However, It would appear that Reddit plans to continue their efforts to stifle 3rd party creators and strong arm moderators who take any stance opposing the admins of Reddit. This creates a serious cloud of uncertainty within reddit as to the future of many subs and how the platform will be handled in the future. Because of this we have decided to create a Discord server which will be open to all of /r/larp to join. It is not our plan to abandon this sub or replace this sub with the discord server, instead, it will act as an extension of this sub itself.

While there are multiple reasons for this decision, one of the largest is that if the future of reddit creates an non fostering environment for us, we wish to have another platform that is free of Reddit's control in order to continue providing resources and networking for all of us who enjoy LARPing and LARP adjacent hobbies.

The discord has the same rules we enforce over here, with a couple modifications to make it more applicable to discords format. There is places for general conversation, places to show off your work, a place to post about and to look for games in your area, as well as Voice chat rooms for people looking to play video games together or just hangout and find comradery.

Please feel free to check it out, and ask any questions you may have. This is still in its infancy, and if we find it doesnt fit what the community wants, we will search for alternatives.
This link should never expire for people trying to join the server, however if you have an issue please message an admin for a new link.

First Garb - Looking for advice!

I got my first few pieces of attire for my completely new LARP-persona that I intend to go live with next year. Completely new to the LA part of LARP, but quite a lot years in the RP part.

Looking for general advice on how to add to my attire, what to go for, what are general beginner mistakes to avoid.

But also looking for some specific advice in terms of style. Right now I bought some stuff to see what fits and how it looks, got it relatively cheaply. My idea is pretty much a late medievalised Fantasy Roman-Valyrian look in the end. Elder Scrolls Cyrodiilic Empire meets Valyrian Freehold basically. My character's colours will be blue, blue-grey, grey range, I want to use green and burgundy for accents and layers.

I got some inspirations and ideas, but really need some more practical and experienced input.

Looking forward to hearing your C&C! :)

Funny larp stories

I recently started larping (UK) and unfortunately some of thr larp attendees have ruined the hobby for me, lots of catty high-school mentally while being mid 20s+.

To cheer me up do you guys have any funny larp stories, words of wisdom etc?.

I'd love to hear it 🩵

Anyone else feeling those LARP blues?

Last event for me was back in September. Nothing like sitting around a fire, drinking some good drink and gambling that IC coin. April seems so far away and I haven’t booked into any player events in the UK between now and then.

Planning on making some camp bits in the mean time and repairing some kit. I am not falling victim to scrolling through listings and buying shiny things!!!(I absolutely will).

So what’s everyone’s plans in the long dark for most?

Character Retirement: Sad, Impactful, Amazing?

Here's some background information. I'm actually Staff at a LARP. I joined up a few years back as a way to reconnect with some old friends and get back into boffer. Now I have way too many NPCs I play. But they've all started off the same way... player character doesn't have a teacher for [insert class/magic/craft], higher ups see me throwing some kit together, "hey can you run out and teach [player name] some [skill school], I say sure, and next thing you know I have yet another wacky combination of teaching skills on my NPC. (an aside: my favorite being an NPC Cleric to the god of wine and revelry who got stuck with Necromancy as a second class.)

Now, a couple years back I got randomly assigned to portray a cleric teacher for the goddess of love, life, and beauty because the player's old teacher stepped back and didn't have an ETA on when they'd be back. This actually blossomed into a lot of fun and in-jokes and a small community thing as this NPC. And this weekend, her character is getting retired.

After filling in last second, and helping this player finally complete their cleric school list and become a high cleric, I will be helping them officiate an in-game wedding that ties up a big part of their backstory, and then they are off to their final plot mod. The player in question needs to step back from game because of wonderful life opportunities. But they've been playing this character for about a decade. Sure, I've only been there for the latter third of their existence but this is the first long-term PC student of mine that will be moving on. The character will be retired, the player won't be back for a year or more, and a decade of story will be coming to a fitting end in a way that ties together so much of the work their character has done in that time.

So how do people feel about character retirement? In many ways, its a necessity. Big sheets being big sheets for years makes certain things tough for newer players. But Big Sheets also bring their years of experience and knowledge. And then also having to give up a character you have played for years can feel almost like losing a part of yourself. There's an obvious emotional impact to letting go of something like that. But having it end in an amazing way must feel better than the character fizzling out.

We've had our fair share of player characters over the years that needed to retire and had amazing send-offs, epic final battles, and somber farewells. This will just be the first time that its been a PC that I have been so intrinsically tied to as one of my NPCs for a number of years.

So, whether from the staff-side or from player-side, how do you handle the emotional release of character retirement, the closure of an entire story arc of personal plot, having to move on from something you have poured time and energy into? I'm expecting this weekend's game to be amazing, impactful, and bittersweet... I can't wait to see how the plot comes to a close, I can't wait to help facilitate these big moments for her character, but I'm also dreading the loss of those years of cleric lessons over tea and finger sandwiches as we talked about the church and philosophy while using her friends and compatriots as our test dummies for new spells in sometimes hilarious ways.

Beginer level LARPs in VT or NH

My friends and I have been trying to find good beginner-level LARPs in VT or NH, but we haven't really had any luck. We are under 18, so we don't really have a big budget. We also want to try to do one before the end of the year.

Sorry about the thumbnails, I promise I’ll hire my girlfriend by the end of the month to make them for me :D

I make various 3D models for myself and share them online for free. Since other people seem to like them, and I haven’t had any complaints yet I thought I’d share them here too.

All the models are 100% modeled by my hands :)

There are more models than I’ve shown in the screenshots, so feel free to have a look. Most of them are decorations for locations: rooms and spaces.

If you like anything, help yourself!

Advice for cold camping and outdoor LARP.

Hail and well met, fellow travelers!

Soon I shall leave my home world and arrive through the portal to the Vortex (Netherlands)
As the weather is cooling down, this tropical fish needs some help keeping warm. I’ve bargained for a plenty of magical warming elements and want to know if anyone has experience with any of these.

As the merchants ran out of the usual heating pads, that instructs the user to not put it directly on the skin, but on cotton clothing.
The merchant suggested I can alternatively take a menstrual heating pad that can be placed directly on the skin, but the instructions read “the pad can not be used during any physical exercise” which has me wondering if that will keep me from running around wildly casting spells and fighting off the undead.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these particular brands?
Has anyone used the pads on thermo clothing, or perhaps on linen, wool, rayon, polyester mixes?
I worry about damaging my LARP outfit.

I also got these insoles I’m excited to try out and hope it won’t cause a problem, I’ve tested the patches at home but the insoles will be on location so I hope there won’t be any weird or bad reactions.

Any tips or recommendations are welcome!
I’ve got layers and a warm water bottle,
Merino sweater for bed, good sleeping bag and isolation mat for the tent, extra shoes, A LOT OF EXTRA DRY SOCKS and pocket hand warmers.
Just finished making a wool cloak with fleece lining for that extra layer.

There isn’t really any indoor space, it’s all tents and as far as I know there won’t be any fires.

Just want to be extra prepared as it might get as cold as 5°C

Ecos de Rhia, my larp group, at Lágrimas de la Tormenta (Cádiz, Spain)

This is my fantasy Viking larp group Echoes from Rhia, I’m so proud of how we performed at the larp 🥹💖 We managed to organize half of the groups (especially the Nordics) at a command table to devise an organized strategy against the enemy.

Personally, I love feeling the heat of battle within a well-formed shield wall. Knowing that in that disciplined line of shields, swords, and spears, if one of us falls, another will step in to take his place. Seeing a friendly shield come to your aid—or stepping up yourself to stand beside a comrade—is a wonderful feeling that only this hobby can provide 🥰

This is my new Mage costume I made, I still have some small corrections, like the belt beeing a little too big and the blue on the boot covers not the same shade as the rest, but still very happy with the result.

So Who Started the 'American LARP Association' Actually?

Came across the Philly LARP Society recently and saw at the bottom of their website two icons. One for The American LARP Company and another for being Accredited by the ALA or 'American LARP Association' (even though the ALA is the American Library Association).

From what I could tell there's no list of accredited games, I haven't seen any other game ever have this recognition, nor can I find any information on anyone involved. In fact there's no contact information at all about it.

I can't even find PLS or ALC registered as a business anywhere and the whole thing is screaming trying to make the org seem more legitimate. Which for such a, relatively new in the grand scheme of things, business opportunity this seems like a strange direction to go in.

Does anyone have any idea here?

Sun glare protection

TL;DR : good ideas to additionally block Sun in addition to a hat.

I’m a big fan of a broad brimmed hat and sunglasses for sun protection in my regular life. Hat is definitely valid for most fantasy settings, so that’s covered. I’m looking for ideas for what could do the job of the sunglasses for bright reflections and when the hat doesn’t catch the sun from a particular angle. I’m considering for a medieval fantasy setting.

I’m familiar with the Eskimo/Inuit snow goggles and am working on making a set. Does anyone know the recommended width of the slits on those? Or just as thin as you can still see out of?

Has anyone used the snow goggles as sunglasses replacements?

Was also contemplating the effectiveness of a veil or some kind of fabric that could also be seen through that would also cut down on sun glare. I’m not sure what kind of fabric might strike the balance of cutting glare and also being able to be seen through sufficiently.

Thanks for any ideas and thoughts.

First sword prototype!

Hi all,

Just wanted to share some progress and show my first blade!

I've build a workshop to make Larp weapons during the year and I put myself a deadline for my first blade last weekend for an alternate history Larp (100y war with zombies :p).

The construction is an oval fiberglass in PU foam and PU rubber skin to get fine details and the handle is CNCed walnut

It still have some shortcomings due to the time crunch at the end but I'm already proud of the result. The mold line are too visible, some bubbles are quite big due to the foam not being homogeneous enough and it's not yet balanced due to me forgetting where the hell I put my lead weights at the last moment during pommels casting.. To name a few ^^.

Anyway don't hesitate to share your thoughts!

How many "sewn shut" eyes would you think would fit a changeling that isnt able to change properly to the point its obvious but not so obvious that a crazy changling is doing it on purpose and how big do you think they should be?

Hello.

Due to me having problems with acting the same during events (even if its only minutes apart) and having problems properly acting out injuries (which isnt a problems most of the time because i can only go to tavern larps) I have decided to become a non human. I decided to be a failed wechselbalg* (changeling) that is kinda crazy but since it hard to properly show that without heavy makeup or latex (which i cant realy do on both cases) i decided to go the route of having to many eyes since they are a bit more easy to do. My idea is that my character has problems properly hiding his eyes so he just sewed them shut hoping that nobody will notice. But now I have to find the right ammount. If I have to many it undermines my characters intelligence which can be fun but hard to do. If its too few it wont be noticed (in a fantasy setting that is) and I also need recommendations for how big they shoulld be (min to max size

Suggestions would help and thanks

*i know several different storys on how wechselbälger come to be (kids possessed by demons, babys stolen and switched by witches or kobolds or goblins or adult wechselbälger or demons or fae or fairies or ghosts etc)

My character is a wechselbalg that was created by a witch and meant to be used as a trojan horse kind of thingy. The witch abandoned it in hopes someone would find it and raise it so it can lure other children to the witch. However the humans who found it realised that it wasnt a human kid and left it alone. The witch then treid the same with trolls (after changing the wechselbalg to somewhat resemble a troll kid) but the trolls realised that its a wechselbalg and brought it back to the witch (as in the Witch went to sleep at her home and woke up with me next to her bed like a reverse secret home invasion which shocked her quite a bit). To proud on her (failed) work she decided to raise it until it (accidentally) ate her.

Where to find open style wizard robes?

Post image
88 Upvotes

I'm making an outfit for my first Renfaire, and it's super important that I find a nice wizard robe similar to the one above. I'm going to be wearing armor underneath it and bracers on my arms, so the open style with sleeves is very important. My budget is $1,000, and I've eaten up about half of that in the armor. Anyone have suggestions for a high quality dark blue robe in a similar style to the one above? Bonus points if they have a giant wizard hat in the matching color... because I need that too. (This image was found on a Etsy listing with mixed reviews, and the seller hasn't responded yet)

Thanks!
