Probably the “LARPiest” character we ever created…

As a design company, ArmStreet have been following (and sometimes creating) the trends in SCA, LARP, Ren Fair and such. What always fascinated us, is that every large community creates some trends that intersect but always are quite recognisable. Another interesting fact, is that LARP costumes is progressing, evolving and also repeating itself in a number of practically disconnected areas

Question about Chamber Larps and being both a Player and a Facilitator at the same time

Yesterday I played my very first Chamber/Nordic Larp (a game called Perfection where you play as organisers of a cult) and I absolutely loved it!

I was already an avid player and GM of TTRPGs, but this showed me a whole new dimension of what the medium of roleplaying games can do.

I'm now looking into maybe organising my own chamber larps but was wondering about the role of facilitator and player.

My question is: Is it possible to play as both a facilitator and a player at the same time?

I know it depends on the scenario and amount of setup and facilitating during the game, but is it a general given that facilitators usually are more on the side line facilitating the game instead of being part of the story and improvising along with the rest of the group?

I'm asking cause I would love to play along with my fellow players, because that's what I found so appealing about the Perfection chamber larp yesterday. That I could really immerse myself in the character and creating the experience together with my fellow players.

But I don't want that desire to come at the cost of my fellow player's experience.

I'm currently eyeing The Life Of Mermaids and that larp says it is possible for the facilitator to be a player in a pinch if they are familiar with the game.

Also, what chamber larps do you recommend I check out?

Thanks for answering and sorry if these are all noob questions (larping is a new experience for me :)

I and two of my TTRPG players attended Conquest of Vastarland in Iowa, and it was one of the most fun things I've ever done. I went in with a pretty basic character, and I came out with conflicts, complex relationships, and a new eye. I'm absolutely hooked.

DIY glowing latex stake

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey! I am completely new to LARP and DIY costumes and I want to ask for some advice from more experienced people.

I have a core less latex stake, like the one in the picture, that is filled with foam. I need to make it appear obviously magical. I was thinking about cutting off the back, hollowing it out, inserting a red LED, glueing the back on again and adding a button to switch on the LED. Afterwards I thought about cutting sigils into the stake from which the LED light can shine through.

Do you think this can work? Or do you have a better idea on how to realize that? I would really appreciate your advice.

If relevant: I‘m playing VtM LARP and the stake is blood magic infused. My fellow players should see that.

First Garb - Looking for advice!

I got my first few pieces of attire for my completely new LARP-persona that I intend to go live with next year. Completely new to the LA part of LARP, but quite a lot years in the RP part.

Looking for general advice on how to add to my attire, what to go for, what are general beginner mistakes to avoid.

But also looking for some specific advice in terms of style. Right now I bought some stuff to see what fits and how it looks, got it relatively cheaply. My idea is pretty much a late medievalised Fantasy Roman-Valyrian look in the end. Elder Scrolls Cyrodiilic Empire meets Valyrian Freehold basically. My character's colours will be blue, blue-grey, grey range, I want to use green and burgundy for accents and layers.

I got some inspirations and ideas, but really need some more practical and experienced input.

Looking forward to hearing your C&C! :)

Edit:

Climate northern to central mediterranean is the goal. Equally adjusted for LARP-summer season and me hating hotness. :D

Profession: He is an Imperial Knight, that means he is a noble who had both a professional education as well as the martial upbringing of a classical knight+legionary (in his world). His profession is in fact an engineer, like roads, wells, fortifications etc. I actually got charcoal, chalk, a plumb bob and wax tablet on my to-buy list

Funny larp stories

I recently started larping (UK) and unfortunately some of thr larp attendees have ruined the hobby for me, lots of catty high-school mentally while being mid 20s+.

To cheer me up do you guys have any funny larp stories, words of wisdom etc?.

I'd love to hear it 🩵

Anyone else feeling those LARP blues?

Last event for me was back in September. Nothing like sitting around a fire, drinking some good drink and gambling that IC coin. April seems so far away and I haven’t booked into any player events in the UK between now and then.

Planning on making some camp bits in the mean time and repairing some kit. I am not falling victim to scrolling through listings and buying shiny things!!!(I absolutely will).

So what’s everyone’s plans in the long dark for most?

Beginer level LARPs in VT or NH

My friends and I have been trying to find good beginner-level LARPs in VT or NH, but we haven't really had any luck. We are under 18, so we don't really have a big budget. We also want to try to do one before the end of the year.

Character Retirement: Sad, Impactful, Amazing?

Here's some background information. I'm actually Staff at a LARP. I joined up a few years back as a way to reconnect with some old friends and get back into boffer. Now I have way too many NPCs I play. But they've all started off the same way... player character doesn't have a teacher for [insert class/magic/craft], higher ups see me throwing some kit together, "hey can you run out and teach [player name] some [skill school], I say sure, and next thing you know I have yet another wacky combination of teaching skills on my NPC. (an aside: my favorite being an NPC Cleric to the god of wine and revelry who got stuck with Necromancy as a second class.)

Now, a couple years back I got randomly assigned to portray a cleric teacher for the goddess of love, life, and beauty because the player's old teacher stepped back and didn't have an ETA on when they'd be back. This actually blossomed into a lot of fun and in-jokes and a small community thing as this NPC. And this weekend, her character is getting retired.

After filling in last second, and helping this player finally complete their cleric school list and become a high cleric, I will be helping them officiate an in-game wedding that ties up a big part of their backstory, and then they are off to their final plot mod. The player in question needs to step back from game because of wonderful life opportunities. But they've been playing this character for about a decade. Sure, I've only been there for the latter third of their existence but this is the first long-term PC student of mine that will be moving on. The character will be retired, the player won't be back for a year or more, and a decade of story will be coming to a fitting end in a way that ties together so much of the work their character has done in that time.

So how do people feel about character retirement? In many ways, its a necessity. Big sheets being big sheets for years makes certain things tough for newer players. But Big Sheets also bring their years of experience and knowledge. And then also having to give up a character you have played for years can feel almost like losing a part of yourself. There's an obvious emotional impact to letting go of something like that. But having it end in an amazing way must feel better than the character fizzling out.

We've had our fair share of player characters over the years that needed to retire and had amazing send-offs, epic final battles, and somber farewells. This will just be the first time that its been a PC that I have been so intrinsically tied to as one of my NPCs for a number of years.

So, whether from the staff-side or from player-side, how do you handle the emotional release of character retirement, the closure of an entire story arc of personal plot, having to move on from something you have poured time and energy into? I'm expecting this weekend's game to be amazing, impactful, and bittersweet... I can't wait to see how the plot comes to a close, I can't wait to help facilitate these big moments for her character, but I'm also dreading the loss of those years of cleric lessons over tea and finger sandwiches as we talked about the church and philosophy while using her friends and compatriots as our test dummies for new spells in sometimes hilarious ways.

Sorry about the thumbnails, I promise I’ll hire my girlfriend by the end of the month to make them for me :D

I make various 3D models for myself and share them online for free. Since other people seem to like them, and I haven’t had any complaints yet I thought I’d share them here too.

All the models are 100% modeled by my hands :)

There are more models than I’ve shown in the screenshots, so feel free to have a look. Most of them are decorations for locations: rooms and spaces.

If you like anything, help yourself!

Advice for cold camping and outdoor LARP.

Hail and well met, fellow travelers!

Soon I shall leave my home world and arrive through the portal to the Vortex (Netherlands)
As the weather is cooling down, this tropical fish needs some help keeping warm. I’ve bargained for a plenty of magical warming elements and want to know if anyone has experience with any of these.

As the merchants ran out of the usual heating pads, that instructs the user to not put it directly on the skin, but on cotton clothing.
The merchant suggested I can alternatively take a menstrual heating pad that can be placed directly on the skin, but the instructions read “the pad can not be used during any physical exercise” which has me wondering if that will keep me from running around wildly casting spells and fighting off the undead.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these particular brands?
Has anyone used the pads on thermo clothing, or perhaps on linen, wool, rayon, polyester mixes?
I worry about damaging my LARP outfit.

I also got these insoles I’m excited to try out and hope it won’t cause a problem, I’ve tested the patches at home but the insoles will be on location so I hope there won’t be any weird or bad reactions.

Any tips or recommendations are welcome!
I’ve got layers and a warm water bottle,
Merino sweater for bed, good sleeping bag and isolation mat for the tent, extra shoes, A LOT OF EXTRA DRY SOCKS and pocket hand warmers.
Just finished making a wool cloak with fleece lining for that extra layer.

There isn’t really any indoor space, it’s all tents and as far as I know there won’t be any fires.

Just want to be extra prepared as it might get as cold as 5°C

This is my fantasy Viking larp group Echoes from Rhia, I’m so proud of how we performed at the larp 🥹💖 We managed to organize half of the groups (especially the Nordics) at a command table to devise an organized strategy against the enemy.

Personally, I love feeling the heat of battle within a well-formed shield wall. Knowing that in that disciplined line of shields, swords, and spears, if one of us falls, another will step in to take his place. Seeing a friendly shield come to your aid—or stepping up yourself to stand beside a comrade—is a wonderful feeling that only this hobby can provide 🥰

So Who Started the 'American LARP Association' Actually?

Came across the Philly LARP Society recently and saw at the bottom of their website two icons. One for The American LARP Company and another for being Accredited by the ALA or 'American LARP Association' (even though the ALA is the American Library Association).

From what I could tell there's no list of accredited games, I haven't seen any other game ever have this recognition, nor can I find any information on anyone involved. In fact there's no contact information at all about it.

I can't even find PLS or ALC registered as a business anywhere and the whole thing is screaming trying to make the org seem more legitimate. Which for such a, relatively new in the grand scheme of things, business opportunity this seems like a strange direction to go in.

Does anyone have any idea here?

Sun glare protection

TL;DR : good ideas to additionally block Sun in addition to a hat.

I’m a big fan of a broad brimmed hat and sunglasses for sun protection in my regular life. Hat is definitely valid for most fantasy settings, so that’s covered. I’m looking for ideas for what could do the job of the sunglasses for bright reflections and when the hat doesn’t catch the sun from a particular angle. I’m considering for a medieval fantasy setting.

I’m familiar with the Eskimo/Inuit snow goggles and am working on making a set. Does anyone know the recommended width of the slits on those? Or just as thin as you can still see out of?

Has anyone used the snow goggles as sunglasses replacements?

Was also contemplating the effectiveness of a veil or some kind of fabric that could also be seen through that would also cut down on sun glare. I’m not sure what kind of fabric might strike the balance of cutting glare and also being able to be seen through sufficiently.

Thanks for any ideas and thoughts.
