As announced a few weeks ago, with the coming municipal election we want to invite any declared and approved candidate to hold an AMA and connect with voters who are part of the /r/kelowna community.
We won't accept any AMAs before September 19 and we will be requiring some form of proof of identity.
To hold an AMA you will need a reddit account and use it to submit your own AMA post on the scheduled day. We will endeavour to moderate.
If you are a candidate who wishes to do an AMA please use modmail to reach out to us to schedule it. We will delete any AMA that was not pre-cleared by mods
Current Schedule
| Candidate | Position | Date | Time (if specified, PST) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Davis Kyle | City Council | September 22 | 4PM | Verified |
| Mike Rose | City Council | September 25 | 8AM | Verified |
| Val Johnson | School Trustee | September 25 | 5PM | Verified |
| Trevor McAleese | City Council | September 28 | - | Verified |
| Gord Lovegrove | City Council | October 12 | 4PM | Verified |

AMA Rules for Questioners (stolen from /r/iama):
We will remove:
Answers to questions from anyone but the AMA participant.
Abusive or harassing comments
Requests for personal favours from the OP (For example, "OP, can you send me a signed autograph").
In AMA posts, top-level comments must ask a question. We will remove comments such as "OMG I love you..." and "No questions, just thanks!"
Comments where there would be no possibility of a real answer, especially where it is deliberately creepy or offensive.
"I bet OP won't answer this"-type responses, which usually come after the OP has finished responding to questions.
"Fluff," non-contributing responses from users, responding to all of the OP's comments for karma/attention.
Repeatedly asking the same question, which violates Reddit's site-wide rules.
Users attempting to bypass the rules by adding a ? to a nonquestion
Questions must be directed toward the individual(s) doing the IAMA.
A subreddit or other website organizing and voting for a group comment/question is considered to be vote cheating and is subject to removal. It is a violation of the rules of reddit and risks a sitewide ban.
Astroturfed questions. Astroturfing is the practice of an individual or group of individuals who plant questions in an IAmA post for a particular purpose.

Hi, I should probably have written this before now. Nonetheless, we have instituted some temporary rules related to election related postings.
First, I want to remind everyone that this subreddit is about more than the elections. We try to walk a fine line between allowing community members to voice their political opinions but also not make the front page all election, all the time for the duration of the campaigns. Having said that:
Rule 1: We don't allow text, self or image posts that are campaigning for / against a candidate. This also covers posts that are 'my attempt at a neutral analysis of the candidates or election issues'.
You can still submit election related links from appropriate sites that are specific to Kelowna and discuss the topic in comments.
What is an appropriate site? Generally a news site, not a blog or advocacy site.
Why? A couple of reasons.
First, if we allow it, we feel that the balance of non-election topics vs. election topics will move in the wrong direction and the sub will get overrun with competing campaigning.
Second, we also don't want to be in a position of fact-checking every claim made by a submitter and we do not want to be a venue for misinformation or propaganda.
Rule 2: This isn't really election specific but the AMA threads are different beasts from normal threads and are more heavily moderated. They exist to allow candidates to field questions from voters. They are not a venue for community members to answer the questions themselves or give their 'spin' on a candidates answer. The entire purpose of them is to allow candidates to answer questions. Period. If you value the AMA as a useful tool to understand a candidates position, don't chase candidates away by shitting on them in the AMA.
You might be upset about these rules. We understand, election posts and discussions are the most intense and passionate breed of subreddit traffic and if you feel like your voice is being silenced then the reaction tends to be visceral. Many of you may not agree but we aren't trying to silence anyone or put our thumb on the scale for a specific candidate or party.
Our desire is a healthy and diverse subreddit where community members who are passionate about politics can get their fill and those who don't care about politics don't feel the need to avoid the sub for a few weeks.
As always, rule 1 is civility.
Feel free to reach out to us in modmail if you have any questions about these rules. Thanks for your attention.

I recently discovered that only a third of eligible voters actually voted in the 2022 municipal election. Voting in the municipal election directly impacts decisions on crime, housing, and traffic. I think it is fair to say we all want change on these issues. I don't think enough people know that these are issues where decisions are made right here in Kelowna, not in Victoria or Ottawa.
So if you really want to be part of the decsion fo vote.

Is it just me, or is the information desk at Kelowna Airport never staffed?
On multiple occasions when I've needed assistance, there's been absolutely nobody at the desk. It's honestly pretty frustrating, especially considering that an airport is one of the places where people are most likely to need help or directions.
What's the point of having an information desk if there's never anyone there when you need them?
Has anyone else experienced this, or have I just been unlucky?

As the title says! I will be in Kelowna over the next weekend and will have a fair bit of time to myself. I would like to check out some local hoops scene's where I can get some shots up or play pick up games. Anyone got any leads? Thanks in advance!

Posting this partly as a heads up about a local org a lot of people don't fully know about, and partly because there's a low-effort way to support them on Sunday.
The Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA) has been around for over 40 years, serving everywhere from Peachland to Lake Country. What surprised me when I got involved is how much they do beyond the bedside. Trained volunteers sit with people in their final days whether that's at home, in hospital, or at Hospice House. They run grief and bereavement counselling for adults, and they have dedicated programs for kids and teens who've lost someone, ages 5 to 19. All of it is free, and none of it is gated by income. They lean heavily on donations to keep it that way.
Here's the easy part. This weekend, October 18, Kettle River Brewing is donating 15% of everything they sell that day to COHA, noon to 10pm. There's a trivia night in the evening too from 6-8pm. So you can grab a pint, hang out, and a chunk of your tab goes to hospice care in our community without you doing anything extra.
Full disclosure since this is my local sub: my wife and I are fundraising for COHA through Swinging with the Stars this year, and this pub night is one of our events. But the beer is good the food is Fantastic and the cause is real regardless of who's posting it.
Kettle River Brewing 731 Baillie Ave.
Would be great to see some of you there.

Looking for activities to participate in for expecting parents. I've seen other towns have Mommy yoga but haven't seen anything in kelowna. Any suggestions?

I'm looking at buying a 20-year-old Lexus from Calgary (unfortunately can't find any good listings for it in BC), but I'm trying to make sure that I can actually insure the thing before I go making plans to pick it up. Obviously, I would expect that stuff like the glass, tires, brakes, suspension and drivetrain have to be in perfect working order, but is there more stuff I should know about, and which shops would be the most reasonable/lenient with passing the car? It doesn't have to be in Kelowna, obviously, since I'll be driving from Calgary; I just want to know the best place that will actually pass the car. Thanks so much!

On December 1st, 2021, we achieved a crazy high of 18°C. That was due to an atmospheric river event. I'm interested to see if we get close again. Maybe even 20?

Trying to see how common it is. Screenshots welcome.

I recently moved to Kelowna and have been doing improv for >10 years. I've asked a few improv buddies if they know about any companies here and they hadn't heard of much in Kelowna, but have heard of some in Kamloops (I'm not gonna go all the way there lol). SO
1) does anyone know of some improv companies here
2) does anyone wanna start a band (an improv troupe)
I'm open to starting a company if there's enough interest, and said company would provide intro classes, workshops, performances, the whole lot.

I need a prescription for mental health issues im having. my family doctor gave me a prescription but the pharmacist told me this type of med would interact with other (non-prescription)meds im taking. My family Dr wont see me for 2 weeks. Would going to urgent care make the most sense in this scenario?
Thank-you
