Question about hiring

Hello everyone, I'm Golang Senior Software Developer and System Analyst, 7+ years of experience, looking for job in Japan with relocation support, have question about hiring.

According to this sub, I assumed that Go jobs are in demand. I searched sites like japan-dev, Tokyodev, filtered by "apply from anywhere" and "no japanese required" (I'm around N3), got around 20 positions (40-50 with only Go filter). I applied to 4-5 "best match" positions and immediately got generic rejection with no details. Other positions are either dead or dont include Go in their tech stack, but mention Go only as "language to prove proficiency".

Then I tried several recruitment agencies - registered in G-Talent and Robert Walters but they didnt even contact me (or should they? how does general agency interaction look like?).

I also registered in LinkedIn, but I dont yet understand how to filter out those job openings by language (most of them appear in Japanese, which I cannot fully understand).

So what am I doing wrong? Is Go really in demand or I'm behind language wall and with ~N1 I could succeed? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

Hello, My company is relocating me to Tokyo from Mumbai in Feb, my husband will join me as well on a dependent visa. He has 10+ years of experience in Embedded/Firmware Engineering and some international experience of working in Sweden, but he does not speak Japanese.
I wanted to understand and get advice from the community on what should be our timeline for applying to jobs, and general approach on how to go about this.

Questions on Rakuten New Joiner Track (Technology Managment Division) | Aptitude Test & Process Timeline?

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for the Rakuten New Joiner (New Graduate) Track for the Software Engineer position in the Tokyo Division.

I have already submitted my application form, and while I wait for the next steps, I am trying to figure out what the rest of the pipeline looks like so I can prepare ahead of time. For context on my background, my Japanese language proficiency is around conversational to business level.

I would love to connect with anyone who has gone through this specific track recently. Specifically, I have a few questions:

  1. Aptitude Test: What is the exact syllabus, structure, and section breakdown for the online assessment/aptitude test? Is it a standard SPI test, a general personality/math test, or a strictly technical coding platform (like HackerRank/Codility)? Are the questions in English or Japanese?

  2. Overall Process: What are the stages after the online test? How many rounds of interviews should I expect, and how long does the process typically take from form submission to offer letter?

  3. Language Factor: Given that my Japanese is conversational to business level, do the technical or final rounds heavily evaluate Japanese capability, or is it mostly conducted in English since it's the official internal language?

[Hiring] Part-time engineer for development of animation production tracker

Hey all, I thought I'd try posting this here, and if it's not allowed, I'm sorry! I run a small indie animation studio in Japan. While making our series we ended up building our own production tracker, and our team uses it every day. I've been showing it to old contacts at Disney, Netflix, and other major studios I worked at before, and there's been a lot of interest in the concept.

Being upfront about the state of it: I built it fast, with a lot of AI assistance. It "works"... our crew uses it daily and we get a lot of great feedback — but it's far from what I'd feel comfortable shipping or having other studios run on. It's one big JS file on Supabase and Cloudflare Pages, no real framework, no proper tests. I'm looking for someone to focus on this part-time to start, possibly full-time as we prep to take it live to other indie studios. Restructure it however you think it should be structured, make it something we can all be proud of, and ship it.

What I need is someone comfortable owning a codebase on their own, who knows Postgres (or Supabase specifically), and who can make sure the AI coding is legit or write proper code

Any background or interest in animation or VFX is a nice plus, not a requirement.

Logistics: contract, part-time to start, fully remote, async-friendly (we span JST and US hours). Tokyo is a bonus, we could meet up at the office sometimes — but overall remote. Paid, rate depends on experience.

To apply: DM me or email [brandon@librarie.jp](mailto:brandon@librarie.jp) with a short note or resume. I'll demo the actual site to anyone seriously interested also, shoot me a DM.

Tokyo has been my dream for 10 years. I’m a CS student from Hamburg looking for a 3-month internship (Apr–Jun 2027), no Japanese yet. Any advice or leads?

Hi everyone,

for the last 10 years, living in Tokyo for a longer time has been my biggest dream. I’m 19, I study Computer Science in Engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), and I’m now in my 3rd semester. I’m looking for an internship in Japan of up to 3 months, ideally from 1 April to 30 June 2027 (or 1 Oct to 29 Dec 2027).

What I can offer: basic programming skills (Java, C, Python), my own small project on GitHub (a transaction screener in C), two short banking internships (Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank), fluent English and German. What I can’t offer yet: Japanese. I’m very motivated to learn, but right now I’m at zero.

I’m not picky about the role. IT, data, operations, finance or business support, anything where I can be useful and learn how work in Japan actually feels.

What I’ve tried so far: I’ve applied to a few places (HENNGE, AHK Japan, Apple IS&T, and others), I’m registered with IAESTE, and I’m looking at exchange options through my university. I know it’s a long shot without Japanese, so I’d really appreciate:

  • Companies in Tokyo that take English-speaking interns for 3 months
  • Programs or scholarships I might have missed
  • Honest advice from people who did the same

I’m happy to share my CV by DM. Thank you so much for reading!

What is it like working in finance in Japan as a foreigner?

Hello, I am a 22 year old Surinamese associates degree finance student from the Netherlands . I want to get my masters degree in finance and eventually a PHD. When I’m done with my associates degree, I want to move to Japan later on. I have been on Japan before and I’d love to learn the language and learn more about the culture.

Need a no-nonsense guild to move to japan

I’m a software developer from India, and I’m exploring the possibility of moving to Japan for work.

I’d love to hear from developers who have already made the move or are currently working in Japan.

A few things I’m trying to understand:

  • How realistic is it to get a software development job in Japan while applying from India?
  • Is Japanese language proficiency necessary, or are English-speaking roles genuinely available?
  • Which skills and technologies are currently in demand?
  • What salary range can someone with around 3 years of experience realistically expect?
  • How difficult is the visa and relocation process?
  • Is moving to Japan financially worthwhile after considering taxes, rent, and living expenses?

I’m not looking for a sugar-coated answer. I’d appreciate honest experiences, practical advice, and even reasons why moving to Japan might not be a good decision.

Thanks in advance!

Accepted a yearlong tech internship in Atsugi, I am an American undergraduate looking for any and all work culture advice.

Hello! To start, I am an American undergraduate student from Georgia (pursuing a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech). I have just accepted a full time 12-month internship in Atsugi, Kanagawa, Japan working for NTT that will start in January. NTT has a very long (12+ year) relationship with my university accepting, training, and working with tech interns so I am not too worried that they will give me tools I need to succeed once I get started.

I've studied abroad before in Europe so, among other basic travelling skills, I know how important it is to put forward an effort to integrate myself into work culture and respect customs. I've done a bit of snooping here and my own research and one thing that you hear a lot is the work culture of Japan can be intense. This is something I am prepared for, but I wanted to field out any advice from anyone who has done something like this before, or if you have something you think any incoming-intern should know. I want to spend the next 2 months preparing however I can so that I make the best impression possible.

Thank you everyone! I'll try to respond if anyone has follow-up questions so I can elaborate but I just set up my reddit account so I don't know how notifications work (lol).

How does background check work from India to Japan move?

I joined a new company in India a month ago and about to get an offer from PayPay Japan

I'm really interested in relocating but I'm afraid if they won't proceed if I disclose about the new company.

I have my final HR+HM round scheduled soon and wanted suggestions on weather I should still mention about my previous company or the new one.

I hate to lie but on the same hand, don't want to lose out on this oppurtinity.

Any inputs would be really helpful!

Switching to project management : good or bad plan ?

Summary :

I have 6 yoe as data professionnal (did two years as a data analyst/scientist, two years as a consultant and two years as a data engineer) and I am wondering if switching to a product/project manager role would be beneficial or a handicap to move in Japan in the coming years.

Long version :

I work in data for 6 years now, but I have always worked on-premise. Now, I am searching a job in Japan and in my home country (because I still don’t have N2, I don’t expect to be hired in Japan in the near future), and I am stuck in both job markets. I had a lot of interviews in France, two recruiters in Japan, and I am mainly screwed because of my lack of cloud-related production experience (before anyone asks, I have a GCP cloud architect certification, but recruiters don’t care). I feel like I am too senior (expensive) to be hired without prior experience on cloud, and I carry my wife and baby so I can’t undersell myself just for the experience.

It happens that I did a lot of project management during those 6 years, and I wouldn’t really mind switching my career to be a data product/project manager.

I was just wondering if having a career in Japan as a product/project manager as a gaijin was harder, easier or more or less the same as having a career with a technical profile.

In terms of employability, Japanese level expectation, salary and so on.

I have an upcoming loop interview for Backend Engineer role and it say I have to use AI for the System Design round.

Can someone who went through this recently share your experience?
