Other My three days in Okinawa were the most peaceful I have ever felt
Hello, I am a 22 year old dutch-surinamese finance student who’s born and lived in the Netherlands my whole life. 2 months ago I did an Asia trip. I solo traveled in two weeks through Taiwan, Okinawa and South Korea.
I cannot stop thinking about it. Last year was my first time in Japan, but man after I’m done with school, I really want to live In Okinawa. I know it sounds crazy like “what bro you’re from an established western country”. But as I started to earn my own money and started to travel the world, I have seen that the world is bigger than my hometown. When I was in Okinawa, it felt like nothing mattered.
I know there is a difference between living and being on holiday in a country, but I want to learn about the Japanese culture and Language.

Where can I find affordable, good quality fabric in Okinawa?
Hi everyone! I recently started sewing and I'm looking for places in Okinawa where I can buy good quality fabric at affordable prices.
The only place I currently know is House of 99 in Chatan Center, but they don't have a huge variety, and some of their fabrics are a bit expensive.
Does anyone have recommendations for fabric stores, discount shops, or places where I can buy fabric for a reasonable price?
Thank you so much for any recommendations!

Bikepacking through Okinawa and looking to know more about the "USCAR" years
Hi there!
This coming January I'll be returning to Okinawa, and my plan is to cycle the length of the island over approximately 5 days.
This is going to be my second visit to the island, and I'd be very keen to learn more about the years after the war, when Okinawa and the Ryukyu were under American occupation.
Does anyone have any sources they'd recommend I read, any site I should be visiting or, better still, somebody who lived through that period and that I can have a chat with? Unfortunately I don't speak Japanese, so English (or French or Italian, though I doubt they'll be much help) would have to do, I'm afraid.
Thank you!

Typhoon Typhoon forecast for Okinawa
Hi everyone!
My fiancée and I are supposed to fly back from Okinawa this Friday with ANA. The forecast currently shows rain starting on Thursday, and we're worried that the typhoon might affect our flight.
We booked our return flight through Trip.com, and unfortunately, we're unable to change our booking through them.
We're considering booking an additional flight for Wednesday to make sure we can leave Okinawa before the weather gets worse. However, we'd obviously prefer not to spend extra money if it's not necessary.
For those familiar with Okinawa and typhoon season:
- Would you book an alternative flight for Wednesday in this situation?
- When a typhoon approaches Okinawa, are ANA flights usually cancelled outright, or do airlines typically rebook passengers onto alternative flights? How does this work in practice?
We'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences, especially from people who have dealt with typhoons in Okinawa before.
Thanks a lot!
Edit: To be precise, we will be on Myakojima

4 nights in Okinawa - rent a car or tour?
Spending 4 nights in Okinawa for 1 leg of our honeymoon. Arriving Oct 27 and leaving morning of Oct 31. We are staying in seragaki island and planning to spend half a day golfing on the 29th. We were planning to rent a car to get around on the other days but now we’re considering booking a tour to take us around exploring the island for 1-2 days. Thinking it’ll give us a more stress free experience so we don’t have to worry about time and directions. Anyone did this and enjoyed it? Suggested plan:
27th - arrive in the afternoon, lounge and relax around the hotel (staying at Hyatt seragaki)
28th - book a tour to explore, maybe snorkeling and blue caves?
29th - golfing then head back and relax at hotel
30th - book another tour - any recommendations?
31th - leave early morning. Maybe Uber or book transport on Klook?

Moving Advice
Hello,
I’m lucky enough to be moving to Naha in late November/early December for a work opportunity, and I wanted to ask for advice regarding all things Okinawa and living there as a foreigner.
Are there any recommendations for housing/apartments? I’ve spent some time looking online but advice directly from people would be incredibly helpful in terms of which complexes to look at and who I may be able to contact.
If I could get in touch with someone living there then that would be amazing, and any other general advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Therapy Recommendations in Okinawa
Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a therapist or counselor in Okinawa, preferably someone who speaks English.
I’ve been struggling with my marriage emotionally, and I feel like I need professional help to process everything and understand what I’m experiencing.
When I try to express that something has hurt me, I often end up feeling blamed or dismissed, which has made me afraid to speak up about my feelings. My husband and I usually make up after arguments, but the same issues tend to come back without much changing. Sometimes I feel like I can’t comfortably disagree or say no, and I’ve started feeling small and like I’m losing parts of myself in the relationship.
He refuses to go to therapy bc of personal reasons, so I want to go alone and at least seek help.
Does anyone have recommendations for a therapist or counselor in Okinawa who has experience with relationship issues, emotional distress, or unhealthy relationship dynamics? I’d especially appreciate recommendations from anyone who has had a positive experience with a particular therapist.
Thank you so much!

Queen Zamami cancellation
Hi,
Queen Zamami got cancelled due to weather. We were able to get tickets for Ferry Zamami on the same day. From what we understand we are entitled to a refund of original ticket but it’s been a week and no news. Anyone been through the same and knows if it’s normal?
Thank you

Please help me find this Okinawa keyring for my 6 year old 🥺
EDIT (18 October): Keyring has been found! I am so grateful to everyone who offered to help. My daughter is going to be so happy and I can't wait to surprise her. 🥰 We love Okinawa and can't wait to visit again one day!
Hi everyone!
Is there anyone currently in Okinawa who could help me get a replacement for this keyring? My 6 year old daughter has lost hers and she is so devastated! We visited Okinawa in July this year and had the best time, and this keyring was her favourite memento of the holiday.
Unfortunately I don't have a better photo of the keyring, but it is an acrylic pineapple charm that opens like the example on the right, and inside is a pink shisa holding a pink and blue ice cream. We bought it in a gift shop at Okinawa World, but I'm certain I saw this exact one in many other souvenir shops around the island.
I would be eternally grateful if anyone could find this keyring and mail it to us in Sydney, Australia. I can pay via paypal and/or send something cool from Australia to you in exchange! Thank you thank you thank you in advance to anyone who can help!
EDIT: u/CuteConference2305 has found the exact thing on the manufacturer's website. Unfortunately the pineapple one is sold out, but this is the one: https://imagedelivery.net/QondspN4HIUvB_R16-ddAQ/6109f20646e30e69263e85c3/befb1460a9270962ad24.jpg/original
Specifically the pink one, bottom right.

Do artists escape to Okinawa as well?
Hello, I was curious to know if there was an underground art scene in Okinawa.
I'm an artist from Korea and our equivalent of Okinawa is Jeju Island; lots of artists move there to escape the busy city life, as I had done so myself.
And as I am traveling to the (main) island soon, I was wondering if I could connect with anybody down there? If I had to be specific, I'd say ambient music. But anything that's not mainstream is good as well.
Thanks,

Help!
My wife and I are going to Okinawa for 5 days and are staying in Onna (October 16-22), considering it’s 2 hours of commute each way from my hotel to the Island of Zamami, I want to know if it’s worth a day trip.
we’ve been travelling around Japan for 2 weeks and now get to spend 5 nights relaxing and I am wondering if 4 hours of commute is worth it.
if the beaches are truly a unique experience and are as nice as the pictures then we’re willing! we don’t know if we’ll ever be back in Okinawa.
anyone’s thoughts from their personal experiences is greatly appreciated

Help
I'm losing my mind was or wasn't there a McD's out there that looked like it was in Victorian building style? Or am I thinking of another food chain? I'm going crazy looking for it.
