Discussion Best/favourite Australian indie acts of the 1980s - 2000s
Hello everyone. Am enjoying the underproduced nature of Australian indie music from the 1980s - 2000s. I grew tall/up? in the '90s in Brisbane so I know Regurgitator, powderfinger, screamfeeder, butterfingers, not from there and some Sydney, Melbourne and Triple J stuff. But I'm less aware of 1980s stuff including the pub scene bands that played alongside Midnight Oil and INXS and suchlike. I know of The Apartments, GoBetweens, Falling Joys, The Clouds, Hummingbirds, Sunnyboys, God, and Died Pretty off the top of my head. Which other bands from the 80s - 2000s do you reckon are good- I'm not a purist against indie bands distributing through major record labels either. Let's keep this thread going...

Discussion Music’s Power and its Ever-changing Effect
Two wonderful things about music are how it affects you and the way its effect changes with you.
How it Affects You
Listening to music is opening yourself up to hear a sound you’ve been yearning for, but didn’t know it. A song grabs your attention when you are in need of it. When you are blindly reaching for that sound, it reaches out to you. It’s as if it’s destiny; music is meant to find you, you’re meant to find it. And the power it gushes through you comes on exceptionally strong:
As soon as a song came on the other day (“Stay Between Us” by Teenage Dads), I felt a deep look into myself. Like my head was thrown into a part of my soul that may or may not have been touched before, but if it had, it had been a long time since. And it awoke my soul. It energized me, made me feel spirit. Music gives you something that you knew you wanted, but you didn't know what it was exactly, and you didn’t know how to find it. That’s why listening is so important—it’s all you have to do. And then all of a sudden, at some point, every once in a while, you will feel this connection to a sound that sends a wave of inspiration and hope through your mind, your physical body (you start moving), and most importantly, your soul. This sound makes you think something is special, and that gives you this belief that anything is possible. And that feeling doesn’t last forever, or else we’d all be dazed, googily-eyed, and paralyzed far too much. But in that moment, however long it lasts, you feel untouchable. You feel like you’re floating in a universe between earth and some form of existential or “after” life, just completely on your own but not at all alone. You’ve actually never felt less alone, because you feel so connected to something else that loneliness isn’t possible, the thought of it doesn’t even cross your mind, and it’s created by something that takes no physical form.
Music has immense power.
The Way its Effect Changes With You
And then, after the first cascade of emotion that comes with a song, it begins a life within you. A life that changes. One phase of the song’s life ends, an indefinite amount of time passes, and you begin another one. In simpler terms: you listen to a song frequently and love it, then you stop listening to it for however long, and then you find your way back to it (either deliberately or by chance) and start a new phase that has different meaning to your life.
When you re-discover a song, or better put—re-experience a song, you receive it differently. It’s a new discovery not of the song, but of how it makes you feel. Sometimes, it’s not necessarily a new feeling, but a rediscovery of how it once made you feel, and you had been away from that feeling for so long that it feels brand new or it’s resplendantly nostalgic. And oftentimes, the emotions come on stronger than the first time you heard the song. And what’s around you can affect how it makes you feel. Nature’s seasons affect it, and what’s happening to you in your life—especially when your perspective changes, for example. And you’re the only one hearing it the way that you do. It’s like your finger print, no one hears a song the same way.
Music is constantly flowing, sticking, washing away and then coming back in a new form, yet the song hasn’t changed. You have. And your reception of it has. It creates new meaning, evokes new emotion, or brings back old meaning and old emotion that you’re ready to feel again. Music unlocks you, opens you up, and it fluxes through your streams.

I Made This Bye Bye Maxwell - Joy of the Blood of the Stars [dream pop / psych pop] - one synth-bass note, a vocoder, then it opens up
We're an indie-pop trio from Bern, Switzerland, and this is our second single, out since 16 October. It starts with a single synth-bass note and the line "Gold is the guts of the stars", sung through a vocoder, and slowly grows into a wide chorus. Produced by Marty Hailey in Edinburgh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXfYnRN7okA
Honest question: does the vocoder at the start pull you in or push you away? We'd love to know.

Promo I made an Italo Disco / Space Disco remix of Enya’s Orinoco Flow
Hi everyone!
As a fan of enya's music, I wanted to explore what Enya’s iconic Orinoco Flow might sound like in a different universe.
I’m Space Explorer, an independent audiovisual project blending electronic music, science fiction, and imagination. I made an unofficial Italo Disco / Space Disco remix, giving this timeless classic a more retro-futuristic, cosmic feel.
I thought some Enya fans here might enjoy hearing a different interpretation of this beautiful song.
You can listen here:
I’d love to hear what you think! What do you think of Orinoco Flow reimagined as a space disco track?
All rights to the original music and video belong to their respective owners. This is an unofficial fan remix.
Thanks for listening!
