200 million dollars to return to Earth from the outer solar system

You're offered 200 million dollars, but there's a catch. The moment you accept, you're teleported into a spacecraft on Charon, Pluto's largest moon, which immediately launches for Earth. Cruising at 50,000 km/h, the trip takes about 15 years.

The ship's interior is a 700 sq ft studio apartment with plumbing, electricity, clothing, and unlimited food. You won't age, and time on Earth stays frozen at the moment you left.

There's no internet. Your only company is Fritz, a holographic companion who can discuss exactly three things: Italian neorealist cinema, '80s hair metal, and the 1995 PGA Championship.

For entertainment, you will have a Star Trek-like replicatior that will materialize any two DVDs per day. There is also a library with 1,000 romance novels.

When you land, the ship touches down in front of your home and vanishes, time resumes, and $200 million appears in your bank account.

Do you accept?

$20/minute, but everyone within 5 meters feels an urge to smash a pizza in your face

• Upvotes

- Anyone within a 5-meter radius of you feels a strong urge to smash a pizza in your face. They can try to resist, but most people can't.

- If they don't have a pizza, the urge stays with them for 24 hours. Many will go buy one and come back to find you.

- You get to keep whatever's left of the pizza. The smasher can't take it back.

- They only know where you were last seen. They can't track you.

- Each person can only smash you once per day.

- You can pay $19/minute for the Inner Crust. Only your friends and family members feel the urge.

- You can deactivate this curse anytime, but you can never reactivate it.

Would you take this?

$15000 monthly, but every month, you have to defeat an animal in a fight to the death.

The Money: 15000 USD or it's equivalent, delivered however you wish, no tax funny business.

The Curse: every month, you must defeat an animal in a battle to the death:

  • At a random time, you will be teleported to an arena suitable for the (randomly chosen) animal's physiology (sharks in water, goats on a mountain, etc. etc.)
  • You will be transformed into an exact replica of the animal you are facing- same age, muscle, health etc. You will not, however, get the animal's mind or experience.
  • The animal will be dead set on killing you; not necessarily bloodlusted, but aware of the kill or be killed nature and committed to killing you.
  • The battle will be 1 on 1. No interference from other creatures either way, though environmental hazards may still occur.
  • If you win, you are teleported back to when/where you were pre-teleport in the condition you were in prior to the battle.
  • If you lose,(EDIT: You are still teleported back to the time/place you were, except now your body is sore/in pain, but no lasting injury). Also, you forfeit half of the month's money (7500) and every animal of that species knows that one of it's members kicked your ass. You'll be able to hear them laughing at you when you encounter any of that species.

You taking the money?

Humor Encouraged Everyone on the planet is offered 1 superpower, what would you pick?

The cosmic overseers decided to test humans, to see if we abuse power, or use it for good. You can have any power you can think of. Walk thru walls, flight, invulnerability, telepathy, pyrokinesis, anything at all, but only 1. If you don't pick one, you will be give a random power, and you will have to try to figure it out.

No one gets super speed and super strength.

No one gets flight and invulnerable.

No one gets invisible and intangible.

You can only get 1 power. You can pick one, or get a random one.

The other one is identical to you, wearing the same clothes, has the same scars, memories, finger prints, DNA and everything else. You don't know which one of you is the original, or even if either of you is the original.

What do you do?

All emergencies and big expenses covered, but paycheck to paycheck in regular life?

• Upvotes

Here’s the deal from my magical genie:

A magic unlimited fund for any and all emergencies and big life expenses - medical bills, college tuition for yourself and kids, weddings and funerals, a house to live in, and a car. Essential maintenance for the house is also covered, and periodic replacement of the car.

BUT, you have to live paycheck-to-paycheck for everything else. No extra money for any savings or luxuries. All your accounts will go to zero at the end of each month. Then you get your paycheck and can spend against that. The genie sets you up in a job where you earn what you do now forever, adjusted for inflation.

Taking the deal or not?

[No Loopholes] $40 million paid to you, but half the dogs in the world instantly disappear, and everyone knows it's because of you and the money you accepted

You get offered a tidy sum of $40 million tax free dollars. If you accept, the minute the money hits your bank account, half the dogs in the world instantly disappear forever, and everyone knows you are to blame for it (the deal you made is all over the media and of course it goes viral all over the world)

As part of the deal, your own dogs, or your family members' dogs will NOT disappear. Also, you don't need to worry about anyone physically harming you because of your decision - it won't happen. You will just be hated.

Do you take the deal, knowing that everyone who lost their dog(s) will despise you? How would you navigate that? Or do you turn down the money. Be honest, it's a lot of money.

You are mentally transported back to the age of 10 with all current knowledge you have. Going forward would you recreate the situations that lead you to significant people in your life?

Blah blah lottery and bitcoin.

However I wonder even if you end up loving the best life for yourself….would you ever live your life “as is” to meet up with people currently in your life that are significant. Best friends, happenstance loves, bosses that you liked, co-workers who you liked.

Because all the randomness we have, lead to how you are. But how many people would you leave out of your life…..or try to connect in a different way because you have a potentially more ideal one?

A supernatural wish granting entity offers you $21 million, but there's a catch.

You must choose between taking the money for yourself or curing every terminally ill child in the world who needs palliative care.

Globally, the World Health Organization and the International Children's Palliative Care Network estimate that more than 21 million children (aged 0–19 years) need specialized palliative care. This entity gives you two options. You can take the $21 million and leave millions of children to die or you can wish that all these children can be cured of their illnesses.

What choice are you making?

Edit: This only heals the currently ill children.

You Can Choose How Much Money You Earn a Day but...

A genie appears, and gives you the offer of a lifetime.

You can choose how much money you earn for the rest of your life, the money magically gets deposited into your bank account at 12:01 local time every day. However, when clock strikes midnight of the next day you must have spent 97% of the money that was deposited. If you do not, all the money you spent that day, and all days prior - becomes debt, all items you purchased with said money go away, and you have no future days.

You cannot spend the money on investments, you cannot buy gold, stocks, crypto, or any other investment opportunities. You cannot give money to family beyond 10% of what you choose - this includes buying things from family (So you cannot buy your Moms TV for 100% of your money one day) - this rule extends to friends or strangers (Strangers you are allowed to buy from aslong as it's in the context of a regular business transaction) You cannot donate more than 10% of it to Charity.

You cannot buy something that you intend at the time of purchase to re-sell at a later time. You cannot pre-pay utilities or subscriptions beyond 3 months in the future.

Pretty much take the deal in good faith.

How much money do you agree to take per day?

EDIT:

Editing to clear some stuff up.

1) If you are incapacitated or physically incapable of spending - the money stops coming in during that time period. The deal is placed on pause. - Not closing a loophole just clarifying so that if you choose to participate it doesn't stop you from doing so.

$20m instantly in your bank account, but every time sneeze, you instantly become naked, and the only thing that restores your clothing is walking around wherever you are for 10 seconds.

EDIT 2: Damn you're a freaky bunch. Lol.

EDIT: to answer a few questions. Yes, you can attempt to stop the sneeze if that works for you. If you are a multi-sneezer, each sneeze accumulates another 10s of walking/jogging.

You can take preventative measures to stop sneezing, such as masks, medication, etc.

When you do sneeze, your clothing instantly disappears and the only thing that makes your clothing reappear is 10 seconds of walking or running, regardless of where you are. Home, supermarket, public transport, your workplace (if you still work), etc.

You can stay naked as long as you like without any unusual consequences, but normal things will still affect you (getting cold, embarrassment, getting arrested for public indecency, etc)... you are not immune to these.

Once you choose to take the $20m, this deal lasts you the rest of your life. Do you take the deal?

The perfect life...with a catch

You are approached by the devil and offered a deal: in exchange for accepting one condition, you will live the best possible version of your life. From the moment you accept, you will always make the objectively optimal decision in every situation, maximizing the quality of your life according to your desires, circumstances, and all future consequences. You can learn anything as efficiently as possible, make the best career and financial decisions, develop your abilities to their fullest potential, and navigate social situations with perfect judgment. You will know exactly what to say and do to build the most fulfilling relationships possible, including finding a romantic partner if a mutually desirable relationship is achievable. You will consistently make the best use of your time, recognize opportunities, avoid preventable mistakes, and develop whatever skills are necessary to achieve your goals. However, you can't directly control other people, guarantee outcomes beyond your influence, or benefit from luck or supernatural abilities.

Beginning the week after you accept the deal, there is an independent 1% chance every day that when you wake up, you'll be transported to a completely empty, sealed room for the next 24 hours. The room contains absolutely nothing except a light source that keeps the entire room continuously illuminated. You cannot escape, damage the room, communicate with anyone outside it, or influence the outside world in any way. You receive no warning, cannot predict when it will happen, and cannot prevent it through your decisions or actions. While inside, you remain fully conscious and experience the passage of time normally. You also temporarily lose the "powers" mentioned earlier. When the 24 hours end, you'll be transported back to your bed with nothing changed except a day passing in the real world (and possible side effects from being confined in the room). The 1% chance is recalculated independently every day, regardless of previous outcomes, and your optimal decision-making ability can't eliminate or circumvent this risk.

If anyone observes you disappearing under the 1% rule, you lose all of your optimal decision-making skills but keep the curse. The deal lasts for the rest of your life and can't be undone.

Would you accept the deal?

THE HIPPO CHALLENGE: $50 MILLION FOR ONE HOUR

You’re offered $50 million. The catch? You must survive 60 minutes inside an enclosure with a fully grown, absolutely furious hippopotamus that wants you dead.

Btw this entire challenge will be broadcast live around the world

THE ENCLOSURE

You’re trapped inside an area measuring approximately 105 metres (115 yards) long and 68 metres (74 yards) wide, roughly the size of a professional football/soccer pitch.

Inside are trees, large rocks, bushes, and a small lake no deeper than six feet (1.83 metres).

A fully grown hippo weighing about 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs) will spawn somewhere inside the enclosure.
It’s extremely aggressive, knows what you look and smell like, and will actively hunt you down. However, it doesn’t know your exact location when the challenge begins.

You have 30 seconds to prepare before it appears.

HOWEVER YOU HAVE ONE ADVANTAGE

You can bring any living person on Earth to help you survive.

They will know the rules and cooperate fully.
They can distract the hippo, help you find hiding places, coordinate escape routes around obstacles, and attempt to protect you.

However, every person you bring costs you $1 million from the prize money.

You must remain alive for the entire 60 minutes. Hiding, running, and avoiding the hippo are all allowed.

You cannot leave the enclosure but you can try to kill or take down the hippo

If you survive until the timer reaches zero, all your injuries are magically healed, the hippo disappears instantly, and you receive your remaining prize money.

However, this only applies to you.

If your helpers are injured, their injuries remain. If any of them die during the challenge, they will not be resurrected.

So are you accepting? Who are you bringing with you if any?

Edit: Before I forget, you are not allowed any weapons at all but you can make weapons in the enclosure if you are able to

Give up one food forever in order to gain absolute knowledge on one subject for the rest of your life

In this scenario you have to give up one food forever. You can’t eat this food again, not on its own or as an ingredient in another dish. However, if you do this you will get gain absolute knowledge in any one subject for the rest of your life.

If you choose to accept this what food are you giving up? You don’t get to choose what subject you gain absolute knowledge in and it could be something useful or it could be something completely random. For example, it could be something as simple as knowing everything about a sport or it could be as complex as knowing astrophysics. It could also be something that is useful to humanity or that makes you a lot of money.

Loopholes Encouraged Everyone in the world gets an offer to choose a superpower but the more people choose the same or similiar power, that power's outcome gets a decrease. What would you choose?

• Upvotes

For example if you choose to manipulate fire whatever as a firebender or by controlling the heat, any kind of superpower that lets you manipulate fire gets a decrease in the outcome.

If only one person choose to manipulate fire then that person has the power of a nuclear warhead. but if more people choose it it can decrease as little as a lighter that can blown away easily.

So, what would you choose?

Other Starting tomorrow, you can sell days off the end of your life at any time, at a fixed rate: 1 day = $10,000, paid instantly, tax-free. Sell as many as you want, whenever you want — but you have no idea how many days you have left, and sold days can never be bought back. How many do you sell?

• Upvotes

Say a hitman was after you, you know who did it, police and fbi don’t believe you. Everyone around you calls you delusional but you were warned it’s real. The hitman is amed with only slag glass and is wearing full Kevlar. Say this is in the United States. Would you leave the country knowing he could follow and you wouldn’t have protections? Would you stay in a dense city? Would you move to the middle of nowhere? What type of partner would you seek? What would you do? Good thing this is hypothetical haha.

One million dollars per year but.....

You are tasked with finding out a burning question of an eccentric scientist. He will pay you one million dollars per year, after taxes, so you get a nice round number. You live your daily life as normal and do everything you would normally do.

The catch? At least once per day you have to consume a single sized serving of either cat or dog food. It's chosen at random for you, so you won't know what you're getting. You cannot mix it, dilute it, or use it as a topping or use something else to top it. You must eat the entire single serving can within 30 minutes. If it makes you sick and you vomit it up, then you have to eat two cans.

You must commit to this for a year. You can choose to eat it at any time during the day, but every day you have to eat a new can. If you miss a day, the deal is off, you get nothing and you have to pay for the whole year if canned pet food, plus an extra 6 months of canned pet food.

You taking it?

Humor Encouraged Is consciousness something that can be re-created?

• Upvotes

FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS POST, PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER WITH "GOD" OR "SOUL" TO KEEP THE DEBATES INTERESTING.

Imagine that hundreds of years from now, humans have discovered teleportation. The way it works is that a machine scans your entire body on a molecular level—documenting every detail—and then completely deconstructs you. Meanwhile, three planets away, another machine receives this information and reconstructs your body molecule by molecule.

Does your consciousness actually get passed on to the new body—where you black out for a second and the next thing you know, you're in a different place? Or do you simply die, and the person who gets reconstructed is actually someone else? Sure, they would think exactly like you and have all of your memories, but would they be you—the REAL you?

There is no single part of the brain that handles consciousness; you can't point to one specific area and say, "This part is crucial." Think of it like an airplane: if you show someone just an engine, a wing, or a wheel, they don't say, "That's an airplane." (If they did, you'd think they were a few fries short of a Happy Meal!) It is only when all of these components are put together that it becomes an airplane. The same goes for the brain and consciousness.

I had this exact thought when I was fifteen before I discovered Derek Parfit's paradox. Write your answers below!

You can travel to any point in the future for exactly 5 minutes. Where and when do you go?

• Upvotes

You get the opportunity to teleport to the future, but you can only stay there for 5 minutes. You need to specify the exact date and time (down to the minute) and the exact location. Once you're there, you can do whatever you want for those 5 minutes, and then you're zapped back to the present.

Where and when do you go, and what do you do while you're there?

A couple of caveats: You cannot take any devices or other items with you, so you'll just pop up there in whatever clothes you're wearing. You also cannot bring anything back with you, except your memories. However, you can use anything that's available to you while you're in the future.

One additional caveat: You cannot use your trip to obtain winning lottery numbers. Everything else, including using future financial information to your advantage, is fair game.

How would you find this specific supernatural being?

You are the embodiment of Death (defined as the last natural beat of a heart).

Your younger sister is the embodiment of birth (defined as the moment the placenta separates from the mother).

Your older sister, the embodiment of ageing (specifically defined the chance something will be different in the next moment than it is in this moment) has gone missing.

All you know is that she intended to incarnate as a human for a lifetime, and that she was planning to be born in Britain. She'd still be herself, but born as a human baby, in a normal human family. She'd grow old and die as a normal human. This is something you all do frequently. Normally, you would be able to sense her. It's a strong signal, and you've never not been able to sense it before. When any of you do this, there's no memory loss - you remember who you are the entire time. There's also no loss of function, i.e., birth, death, and aging continue as normal.

Birth knows that she was born and exactly what date/time that occured. You (again, Death) know that she hasn't died. But neither of you can sense her anywhere.

Her powers have also stopped working. The world is basically in "comic book time." Someone might celebrate their 25th birthday ten years in a row or attend a dozen senior proms and no one would question it.

As Death, you also incarnate in a human body, grow up, and work as a detective specialise in missing person cases (you're really good at, mostly because you know for a fact if someone is alive or dead, so you're good at knowing which leads are worth pursuing/resources are worth spending in a specific case). This gives you a lot of access to databases and leeway to go and ask people weird questions.

How do you go about finding out what happened to ageing? What leads would you pursue?

A malevolent force heals the Earth. Will humanity survive?

A malevolent cosmic force arrives on Earth and is angered by the damage humans have caused. Through this being’s vast powers, in the blink of an eye, it heals the Earth of all traces of all things human made. The earth is transformed into virgin undeveloped land over the whole world, including any human made objects in space which are disappeared. The earth is as if humans never existed. As for the humans, every single one of them is stripped down to nakedness (clothes and shoes are man made so they have disappeared) and are placed on the nearest standable ground from where they were before the “Healing of the Earth”.

Now you have 8 billion+ humans all naked and bewildered with no infrastructure, no stored foods, no nothing. But everyone does retain their memories of before the world was “healed”.

What happens to humanity? Will they be able to recover? And if so, how long will it take to get back to the state of technology before the “healing” of the world happened?
