Pictures Solomon quicklaces vs regular laces

Post image
• Upvotes

I got Solomon’s x ultra 5 gore-tex recently. First hike in them I felt like the laces slip and I either have them way to tight or to lose my foot slips. I’m thinking about replacing them with regular laces to have more control over the laces. I’m worried if I cut the laces and replace them , I’m going to regret it. Reviews and opinions on quick laces??

I do quite a bit of long hikes with scrambling so I want to feel like my foot is secure

Question Mountain hike suggestions East of the Mississippi (USA)

• Upvotes

Hi all. Thanks in advance. I have 2 young sons, and we have started a tradition where we go find and hike a mountain each year. I was just wondering if anyone had some suggestions of good trails. If possible, I would like the hike to be hard to strenuous with some good scenery along the way. Around 6 to 10 hours in total would be about perfect. Like the title says, I am primarily looking in the United States, East of the Mississippi River, with some good elevation gain. Thanks again! I look forward to seeing what everyone suggests.

Question Best Plus Size Coats on a Budget UK?

• Upvotes

Hi,

What brands/specific coats are best for larger sizes?

I recently gained a tonne of weight (university lol) and cant find any size 20/22 coats in any of the usual outdoorsy shops I prefer.

I'm looking for something budget friendly that's reliable and comfortable with good waterproofing

YHA Streatley sold at auction for £675,000 yesterday. Another hostel lost to the network :(

• Upvotes

So, it's tragic to report that YHA Streatley sold at auction for £675,000 yesterday (21 Oct 2026). Another hostel forever lost to the network and no budget YHAs left for hikers etc. in that part of the country despite being near several national walks :(

What is absolutely bonkers is that this hostel was originally listed for sale for £850,000 a few years ago. They had about three sales fall through.

Then six months ago the YHA turned down offers around £750,000...only to now sell it for £75,000 less in a poorly publicised fire-sale auction, with about 30 days' warning. Appears to be a complete shambles. Is the YHA's very survival at risk here for them to be doing this?

TCS is one of the largest and most popular camping networks in Switzerland. Their sites are often located on the shores of Alpine lakes, along rivers, or at the foot of majestic mountains. They also offer Wi-Fi, glamping options, and cabin rentals. We visited the Graubünden region.

Our little hut with the Adamello in the background. Yesterday was autumn, today is winter. Took a little stroll up to the Passo Ritort. It could be worse! Winter - as they say - is coming. (They just started making snow up on the Grostè in Madonna di Campiglio)

Question Long ultra hike before Glastonbury

Hi, bit of a niche question here. I am potentially signing up for a long hike challenge along the coast near Cornwall - 100ish miles over 3 days. While I occasionally hike and have a good base level of fitness (l training for a marathon and can currently run 30km) and am comfortable that I would be able to train for this event, I would only have 3 days after the hike before attending Glastonbury where steps are approx 25k-40k per day. Is it impossible/am I crazy for considering this hiking challenge so close to Glastonbury?

Thanks in advance!

Pictures Hiked Bukhansan to Baegundae during autumn in Seoul

Climbed Bukhansan in Seoul last weekend and made it to Baegundae (835.6m), the highest peak of Bukhansan. 🍂

The autumn colors made this one of my favorite hikes I’ve done in Korea so far. The final section toward the summit was definitely harder than I expected, but the view over Seoul was worth it.

Sharing some of my favorite photos here. I also filmed the whole experience and put together a video carousel on my Instagram. it’s on my instagram profile @nneljxy if anyone wants to see the actual hike from trail to summit.

Would definitely recommend Bukhansan if you’re visiting Seoul and enjoy hiking.

Started 23th of august and finished sept 13th. Didn't know what to expect tbh but it was more then i could have hoped for. Incredible landscapes and not too many people. Slept outside for most nights since the huts can be quite expensive but it didnt get super cold so that was no problem.

Besides, getting woken up by reindeer standing next to your tent is quite a nice way to wake up. I think this was the best time of year to walk it because you get to see the colours of the leaves changing and due to the weather there are not too many mosquitos to ruin your mood.

We went on a family hike in the Alpstein mountains on August 1st, Switzerland's National Day. 🇨🇭🫕

We hiked around 5 km through the mountains, with some incredible views of Seealpsee and the surrounding peaks.

The funniest part was a group of goats that apparently decided to join our family hike. They just walked along the trail with us for a while 😂

We also spent the night up in the mountains. Honestly, the whole experience was pretty unforgettable. Switzerland never gets old!

Question Best intermediate shell for mountaineering/hiking/tramping?

Im getting into mountaineering and ive got a trip to new zealand planned, in which im planning on summitting some b tier peaks like earnslaw and aspiring.

Im an avid hiker and have a particular affinity for horrific conditions and spend a great deal of time in torrential rain and storms (im australian). just recently hiked 13kms (8 miles) with over 12cm (almost 5 inches) of rain in 24 hours.

After my last new zealand trip ive decided to upgrade my shell jacket and am wondering what a good option would be? not a goretex fan (PFA's and all) and im looking at the $700aud ($500usd) range. Currently a fan of the himali monsoon but what are some peoples advice here? im young, strong and keen to hear from people who know more than i do

Question Franconia Ridge Questions

I was looking at going this weekend (Sunday) but wondering how early i need to arrive for parking. I don’t see myself getting there earlier than 6:30am. i know weekdays are generally better but that’s when i’m free this week.

Also has anyone been up recently? I heard there was some trailwork/rerouting done. Was it just on falling waters? I saw they rerouted away from the falls. I’m planning to go clockwise, i hate ascending falling waters.

and before anyone asks yes i do have microspikes & winter gear.

edit: going to ask this in a more local sub lol

low karma is not letting me post anywhere else

Garmin Explorer App--first impressions

I purchased a Garmin Inreach Mini2 because I do a lot of solo hiking in isolated areas with no cellphone coverage. In setting it up, I needed to download two separate Garmin Apps--Garmin Messenger and Garmin Explore. SO far I am underwhelmed with both apps. Neither seems intuitive. But Garmin Explore is especially disappointing. Or maybe it is because I haven't figured out how to use it. I generally use Komoot or AllTrails or FarOut and one or more of these typically has the trails I am on. But Garmin Explore is supposed to have something called Garmin Trails, but I can't find it--unless it simply doesn't have any trails for my area. I can keep running Komoot and just using the Inreach for its intended purpose as an emergency service. Is it just my ignorance of how to use the app, or is Garmin Explorer pretty weak as a trail navigation app?
