A Helping Hand 💖 Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - Oct. 2026
Hi all,
We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.
We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.
The Dartmouth Calendar is back, but the Sackville one is a little low-res, apologies.
Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.
The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:
https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/
Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. 💖
And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.
Thank you!

Food & Dining What is an expensive yet poor quality restaurant I can suggest to people who annoy me?
Title says it all. I work in an establishment where I am often asked for recommendations and try my best to make sure people have a great experience, but on occasion the person who asks has treated me quite poorly. What place gives the worst bang for your buck?

Driving & Transit Steele Dealerships Adding Charges to Your Bill
Just a heads up; if you're having work done on your car at a Steele Dealership, when they give you a bill, LOOK at what they're charging you for.
Last year, Service Advisors at Steele Dealerships began aggressively upselling unnecessary services to people, implying that warranties would be voided, damage could be done, etc if you didn't get everything they said you needed.
Luckily, my ass has some experience with cars, and I called them on it, and now there's a note on both my cars that say not to upsell me.
This week, however, I sent my car in for some service, and there was $600 in up-charges above and beyond what I had brought the car in for to be done, including the nebulous $154.95 "diagnostic" charge, which was interesting because the issue was suspension, which does not require diagnostics. They also tacked on an alignment, brake service, and a few other goodies, which was interesting because the brakes had been serviced less than 5000kms ago.
When I pressed on it, the first thing they did was halve the price of the up-charges. When I continued to inquire as to why they were on my bill, they admitted the charges were "recommendations".
They're not labelled as such on the bill- they're right there in the "we're going to do this, and you're going to pay for it" list.
This is the second different Steele Dealership I've encountered this at in the last few months.
To be clear, not only is this illegal under deceptive marketing and fraud protections, but carmakers can terminate dealership privileges if a dealership is caught doing it, because it's detrimental to the reputation of the carmaker.
So, at ANY Steele Dealership, read your bill VERY carefully before you agree to pay. Educate yourself on what you're having serviced, and how much it should cost. Call them out on their false service charges, and report them to whatever automaker they're representing (contact their Corporate Customer Care).
This is the sort of bullshit you see at shitty mechanics and guys who work for cash, not a legitimate AutoGroup that owns multiple dealerships.

Support Local My buddy and I started a small business making custom cribbage pegs here in Halifax
Hi Halifax! I wanted to share a little business my buddy and I started, and I hope it brings a smile to some fellow crib players.
Growing up in Halifax, crib was always on the table with my family and friends. My parents still play a lot, tournaments included, and they were always complaining that they and all their friends had the exact same pegs, so nobody could tell whose was whose.
My buddy and I were sitting there listening and thought it would be a great idea to make custom pegs with your name on them in your own colours. We made a set for my parents, then their friends wanted some, then their friends' friends did, and that's how Crib Pegz got started.
You can put any name on them in any colour, or pick a symbol like an anchor, a lighthouse, a lobster or a maple leaf. There's a preview on the site so you can see exactly what yours will look like before you order. They also make a fun stocking stuffer for the crib players in your life.
We're just two local guys doing this on the side, so every order and every share genuinely means a lot to us. If you have any questions or ideas, I'd love to hear them in the comments!
What name or symbol would you put on yours? 😊

Food & Dining Barrington Tim’s is a disgrace
Hey guys just wondering if anyone else has had so many problems as I have at the barrington tims in the south end.
We went by today to get a sandwich with chipotle just to drive down the road and see there’s no sauce. No big deal stuff gets missed when it’s busy, we went back and asked to fix it where the employees apologized and got us a new one! But sure enough we leave the store and find out no sauce again.
We go back in the store and let them know hey I get it’s busy but this is the third time trying to get this made right. They apologize and make another sandwich. I get out to the car and see this absolute mess. The wrapper was literally wet from the amount of sauce on the sandwich.
When I went back the employees had to gather around to see how bad this sandwich was.
Has to be the worst Tim Hortons in the whole HRM constant problems.

News, Weather & Politics Halifax’s famous clock celebrates 223 years of keeping time
“The Old Town Clock has been a symbol of the city and a strength of the city because on the day of the Halifax explosion, it still worked. Imagine all the tragedy around and yet there was the clock still doing its job,” [historian Blair] Beed says.
“It’s one of the first things we see on the tour. We go up the hill and we’re looking for the clock,” says Abby Beamish, a tour supervisor with Ambassatours. “A lot of people are really impressed that it still uses a hand winding mechanism, the same original bells it was built with.”

News, Weather & Politics Halifax doesn’t know the condition of most municipal-owned buildings: audit
The Halifax Regional Municipality does not know the condition of many of its buildings, according to a new report from the auditor general [note: PDF link].
The performance audit, which looked at municipal-owned facilities from April 2023 to March 2025, found the conditions of 96 buildings have never been assessed, 43 of which are more than 25 years old.
Management noted the last major building assessment was conducted in 2013.

Nostalgia A Favourite of my Yesterdays
How I miss mornings on the AM dial!
This mug takes me back to my Nanny's kitchen table, great music and personalities, and wonderful conversation with one of the purest souls I ever knew. How I would love to sit with her again and listen to those great radio voices of Brian Phillips and Tom Jeffries.
Did you have a favourite DJ or memory?

Discussion Ranked: North American Cities by Quality of Life
I stumbled upon this comparison article in my newsfeed today and, although I think these articles are always vulnerable to criticism, I thought this one provides a reasonable view of Halifax.
Halifax places high for Canada for the cost of living but moderate for the Americas. Concurrently, quality of life is rated high. In my experience, these ratings are appropriate but many will disagree.
I weep for poor old Hamilton, not to mention Regina.
Note to mods: if this is not sufficient context, please advise on what would be better. Thanks.

PSA FYI - Hotspot parking is down
"The HotSpot Parking app is undergoing maintenance that will require it to be down temporarily. It will be back up and running shortly.
We have alerted the cities to the issue and recommended they do not issue parking tickets, however we are not the authority on this matter. If you receive a parking ticket, please dispute it as normal. The city is aware of the outage."

News, Weather & Politics Membertou Community Update on Partnership with Everwind Fuels
From Chief Terry Paul:
Membertou,
Our partner Everwind has been in the news lately, and it’s important that you, our community know the facts.
Membertou has been partnered with Everwind for 5+ years on developing clean energy projects in Nova Scotia. Membertou is the majority owner of proposed on-land wind farms to produce clean wind power at four sites in the province, Bear Lake, Kmtnuk, Upper Afton and Windy Ridge.
Everwind recently announced they are partnered with Anthropic to develop a data center in Point Tupper Industrial Park. Membertou is not partnered on the data center project. We’re currently assessing and learning about the project in deeper detail and haven’t invested at this time.
Everwind has been a thoughtful and trustworthy partner to us over the last five years.
Here are some facts about the data center that might dispel rumours and misinformation circulating online:
Everwind Data Center Project Facts:
- The proposed data center will be a closed-loop, cold-climate center which will focus on sustainably using water from Landrie Lake.
- Landrie Lake is a man-made lake near Point Tupper and is currently used to service other industrial operations in the area. At full capacity only 1.5% of the daily allowance from the Lake will be needed to service the data center.
- In Phase 1 of the project, the data center will utilize the equivalent of an olympic-sized swimming pool worth of water on a monthly basis.
- At full capacity, the data center will utilize about one-fifth what golf courses use to maintain their operations.
- The data center is a private investment of $8-billion – the largest private investment the province of Nova Scotia has ever seen.
- As a new paying customer on the electricity system, the data center will deliver substantial financial benefits and allow the grid to be maintained without putting a burden on customers/rate payers.
Computing, artificial intelligence, and data are the way of the technological future. If you’re reading this message today via social media, data and AI are being used. We have a responsibility to be at the forefront of these major projects to ensure they’re designed and developed from a sustainable lens.
Our communities know what happens when we’ve not been at the table for important industry decision-making in the past. Currently, there is an opportunity to shape this new industry during these early stages; to ensure environmental measures are upheld, and to ensure our resources are well-managed.
The truth is, these centers will be part of our future.
They will continue to be developed based on demand. We can either have a say about how they impact our communities and be at the table to set forth guidelines and stewardship, or we can choose to ignore the responsibility we have to the coming generations.
The next seven generations won’t live a life that looks like ours.
It’s important we set them up for sustainable success in these industries that will be part of their everyday life.
The Membertou community can be assured that like all business decisions we make, our investments are rooted in thoughtful research, our commitment to continuing to provide opportunities for community members, and being a leader for the island of Unama’ki.

Discussion Volunteer/charity work in HRM?
I have a friend who is recovering from some medical problems, who would like to be of service to people or businesses in need, for up to 4 hours a day until he is able to return to full-time work with his employer.
He has some mobility and dexterity issues however he is a skilled and experienced IT tech, Chef, bookkeeping/accounting, restaurant server and bartender, and also has experience with electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, drywalling and painting.
He has helped his family and friends as much as possible and is looking for opportunities to help others now.
Any suggestions where he should be looking?
