***This post is intended for people who are interested in applying to TMM soon/later on in their studies. And I wanted to make this post to address some rumour I have heard about TMM using my personal experiences and anecdotes. I am also procrastinating on studying for my last midterm haha
Hi everyone.
I started my third year in the Translational and Molecular Medicine (TMM) program a month and a half ago, and I wanted to put together a detailed summary of my experiences being in this program thus far. Now, you might be thinking, “You’ve literally only been in this program for a month and a half!!” And to that, I’d argue that while 1.5 months might not seem like a long time, I highly doubt my opinions about this program are going to change much since it’s kinda the same from this point forward.
I am first going to talk about what I like about TMM compared to biomedical sciences:
- Smaller class sizes: I loooove how TMM feels like a close-knit community because everyone generally knows each other. I like the social aspect of it and being able to meet/become friends with like-minded individuals.
- The professors want you to succeed: unlike back in biomed, I feel like the courses are structured in a way where it helps you succeed. There aren’t rlly “weed-out” courses that will tank your gpa (maybe proteins but I can’t speak on that yet).
- The lab course is really nice so far. It is unlike any other labs I’ve done in the past. I don’t get traumatized anymore iykyk.
So now I will continue by listing the rumour, then addressing it using my experiences and opinions.
Rumour(s) #1:
- TMM is a bird program and it’s easy to get a 10.0 gpa…
OR the opposite:
- TMM isn’t a bird program at all/is really difficult and is falsely advertised as helping people prepare for medical school…
I’ve heard both extremes of the rumours related to the program’s difficulty. I think people tend to forget that, despite how TMM markets itself to attract prospective students, it is still a university-level program at the end of the day. So like any other STEM program, there are some elements that will be easy, while others will be more challenging. If you set yourself up with unrealistic expectations then you will inevitably get disappointed. Being in a program won’t magically get you a 10.0 gpa or give you all the skills/experiences you need for medical school.
Rumour #2:
- The first semester of first year of TMM is really heavy in terms of course load.
Now, this might be where my experience falls a little short, but after completing my first round of midterms, I do think there’s some truth to this rumour. However, I also think that the heavier course load is partly due to the fact that third-year courses are generally more content-heavy than second-year courses. While studying for my midterms, I didn’t necessarily feel any more overwhelmed by my TMM courses than I did when I was in biomedical sciences. That being said, I did have to memorize something like 30 different signalling pathways for one of my midterms, so I can definitely see why some people might find the program more challenging than what we’ve been used to in the past.
This is all for now. I will either update this post as I gain more experiences or delete it entirely.
