Learning from the legendary GOT

Post image

I am a huge huge fan of GOT. I have watched all the 8 seasons 6 to 7 times. My favourite characters from the series are Jon Snow and Lord Tyrion

Me and my roommate were so into the series that we literally started using the terms and dialogues in our day to day lives. One example of it is shared by me when I labelled our rooms

Anyone else absolutely hate how Sandor Clegane's story ended?

He had such a great journey and character development, only to end up dying to an overpowered, zombified monster. It left a bad taste in my mouth. His revenge arc against the Mountain no longer felt satisfying at that point because Gregor was already dead and had essentially been turned into a mindless monster by Qyburn. There was no real sense of justice or closure in it.

As bad as the ending of GoT was, it would have at least left a somewhat sweeter taste in my mouth if Sandor had survived and been given a meaningful role afterward, perhaps as a sworn protector of Bran or even as a lord in the city watch or kingsguard.

People forget a key stipulation of Walder’s deal with Robb

When discussing what Robb could have done different, many people say that if they were Robb they’d just do the marriage then and there, forgetting that Walder Frey did not want this.

Normally when these sorts of alliances are made, yes the marriage comes first. In Robert’s Rebellion Hoster Tully joined the rebels only after Ned and Jon Arryn married his daughters. In the ā€œallianceā€ with Drogo the marriage to Dany came first. Because that’s how committing to a side works. When Catelyn is relaying Walder’s terms, she says that, regarding Robb’s betrothal, he will marry ā€œonce the fighting is done.ā€

Because the truth of it is Walder never fully committed. Commiting would involve actually having the marriage done then and there. He didn’t want to, and never has in any conflict because he’s a weasel. If, after the Battle of Blackwater Bay Robb said ā€œHey Walder, I’d really like to marry one of your daughters,ā€ do you think he would’ve said ā€œyes Robb, glory to House Stark, let’s have a bloody good wedding at my place!ā€? No, he would’ve said ā€œheh, that’s not the deal we made. Wouldn’t want to break your word to me now, would you boy?ā€

Also, as for Robb potentially pressing the issue to have the marriage happen then and there, he was never going to do that. His battle plan relied on speed. He’s in a lord’s castle, not Vegas, he couldn’t just have a quickie wedding officiated by Westerosi Elvis.

Anyone remember that 10+ min house stark youtube tribute that started with "family duty honor"?

hey guys, trying to find an old game of thrones video i watched on youtube years ago and it's driving me crazy. pretty sure it got wiped in one of the copyright sweeps, but maybe someone has a reupload, archive link, or at least remembers the creator.

it was a long house stark montage, easily over 10 minutes long (maybe around 12-14 mins).

the biggest detail i remember is the intro. it literally starts music then young bran saying: "family, duty, honor... is that the right order?"

does this ring a bell for anyone? if anyone knows the editor, the title, or has a link/backup somewhere please let me know. thanks!

Olenna taking the stone from Sansas necklace Spoiler

• Upvotes

I’ve seen the show more times than I can count, and upon my latest rewatch I picked up on something I haven’t seen before. Obviously we know Olenna was behind it, but it wasn’t after reading the books that I thought to be aware of the moment she gets the poison off Sansas necklace. I just saw that they included it in the show! To some people it may have been obvious, but I guess I never thought to pay much attention to her hands at that moment, so I’m just blown away that it’s been there all along and I never saw.

I feel like that’s the beauty of rewatching though, there’s always a new Easter egg I didn’t pick up on before, and small details to reveal themselves. Just wanted to share my joy in realising, and wondering if most people already knew or if a lot of you were like me, and it was a moment that passed you by.

How I Think Game of Thrones Should Have Ended

Post image
620 Upvotes

I’ve had a theory since several seasons before Game of Thrones ended that Gendry Baratheon should have ended up as king. And honestly, I still think that would have been a much more satisfying conclusion.
First, I think the show needed 10 to 12 full seasons. The early seasons were so effective because they took their time developing characters, political relationships, and consequences. The final seasons rushed through events that should have taken years to unfold.
Jon Snow should have been the one to kill the Night King. His entire story was building toward that confrontation, especially with the Prince That Was Promised prophecy. I also think the White Walkers should have made it much farther south. Imagine Winterfell actually falling, forcing the survivors to retreat as the dead continued marching through Westeros. The final confrontation could have taken place somewhere historically significant, like the Gods Eye or the Isle of Faces, tying the conflict back to the ancient magic of the Children of the Forest.
And here’s where my slightly insane Bran theory comes in.
What if Bran was actually responsible for creating the Night King?
We already know from Hodor that Bran can influence the past while observing it through his visions. What if, while witnessing the Children of the Forest creating the Night King thousands of years earlier, Bran tried to intervene by warging into the man they were about to transform?
He believes he can prevent the White Walkers from ever existing. But when the Children plunge the dragonglass into the man’s chest, something goes horribly wrong. The magic interferes with Bran’s warging, severing a portion of his consciousness and trapping it inside the newly created Night King.
Bran’s attempt to prevent the catastrophe actually becomes part of what causes it. It’s a closed time loop, just like Hodor, but on a much larger scale.
The Night King isn’t secretly a good guy. The transformation has corrupted that fragment of Bran’s consciousness into something genuinely monstrous. But it explains the strange supernatural connection between them, including why the Night King seems to recognize Bran when he touches him during the vision.
Eventually, Bran discovers the truth and realizes that trying to manipulate the past has had catastrophic consequences. Jon ultimately kills the Night King, and Bran learns that even his extraordinary knowledge and abilities have limits. His character arc ends with him accepting that he can’t control everything, which makes his eventual role as an adviser rather than a king much more meaningful.
Jaime should have killed Cersei. He originally became the Kingslayer by killing the Mad King to save King’s Landing. Having him ultimately kill Cersei to prevent another catastrophe would have brought his story full circle. He still loves her, which makes the decision even more tragic. His redemption wouldn’t be about becoming a perfect person, but about finally making the right choice despite what it costs him.
The Hound and Mountain could still kill each other, but their final confrontation deserved more emotional weight, particularly regarding Sandor’s lifelong trauma and fear of fire.
Daenerys should still burn King’s Landing. I’ve always thought her descent into tyranny was foreshadowed throughout the series. She genuinely believes she’s a liberator, but increasingly confuses her own ambitions with moral righteousness. She’s ruthless toward anyone she considers an enemy, becomes obsessed with her birthright, and gradually begins resembling the very tyrants she claims to oppose.
Her downfall wasn’t a betrayal of her character arc. It was the culmination of it. The writers just needed more time to make that final transformation believable.
Jon still kills Daenerys. Drogon still melts the Iron Throne. Jon eventually returns north, Arya sails west, and Sansa becomes Queen of an independent North. Those endings all make sense for their characters.
But instead of Bran becoming king, the surviving nobles elect Gendry Baratheon.
Gendry is Robert Baratheon’s biological son, and Daenerys herself legitimized him and made him Lord of Storm’s End. He has a legitimate claim, but more importantly, he grew up as an ordinary working-class blacksmith. Unlike nearly everyone else competing for power, he actually understands what life is like for the people who suffer through the wars of kings and queens.
He also doesn’t particularly want the throne, which makes him a fitting choice after everything Westeros has endured.
Tyrion becomes his Hand, bringing years of political experience and hard-earned humility. Bran serves as an adviser through his knowledge as the Three-Eyed Raven. Gendry recognizes the North’s independence, allowing Sansa to rule her own kingdom.
And I love how everything comes full circle.
The series begins with Robert Baratheon on the throne after winning it through rebellion. It ends with his son becoming king, not through conquest, but because the surviving leaders choose him.
Daenerys spends her entire life trying to reclaim her family’s throne, only to unknowingly legitimize the man who ultimately succeeds her.
The Iron Throne was originally forged by dragonfire from the swords of conquered enemies. Drogon destroys it, and Gendry, a literal blacksmith, chooses not to rebuild it.
Jon saves humanity but never becomes king. Jaime completes his redemption through tragedy. Daenerys becomes the kind of ruler she swore she’d never be. Bran discovers the terrible consequences of trying to control history. The surviving Stark children finally find their own places in the world.
And Gendry, a man who spent most of his life making weapons for other people’s wars, is left with the responsibility of rebuilding a kingdom devastated by them.
It’s not a perfectly happy ending, and it shouldn’t be. Westeros is still broken, countless people are dead, and nobody gets everything they wanted.
But there’s finally a chance for something better.
That’s the bittersweet ending I think Game of Thrones deserved.

17yo watching game of thrones

Im on season 3 right now, finished rains of castamere just now. Have to say this is one of the absolute best shows ive ever watched. Mentioned my age because everyone I’ve talked to who are around my age haven’t watched this show and often dislike it for no apparent reason, its almost like the hate stranger things receives by people who havent even watched it (i too partake in the stranger things hate).

Ive loved this show till now, its one of the best ive ever watched. All my older cousins (millennials) have recommended this show to me for quite some time but i never took them seriously, i thought that it was lowk a show for boomers.

So glad that i watched this show. Its absolutely fucking peak.

Faith of the Seven: All rituals shown so far (in all the shows), catalogued in a post for your convenience

Note: in many episodes, only part of the words are spoken. I have attempted to create composites from different episodes and shows, to have the most complete version of each ritual as possible. Wherever the words differ, it will be noted with a \.*

Prayer to the Seven before a meal

We ask the Father to judge us with mercy, accepting our human frailty.

We ask the Mother to bless our crops, so we may feed ourselves and all who come to our door.

We ask the Warrior to give us courage in these days of strife and turmoil.

We ask the Maiden to protect [name]'s virtue to keep her from the clutches of depravity.

We ask the Smith to strengthen our hands and our backs so we may finish the work required of us.

We ask the Crone to guide us on our journey from darkness to darkness.

And we ask the Stranger [interrupted, Hound adds: not to kill us on our beds tonight for no damn reason at all]

-Game of Thrones S4E3

Prayer to the Seven before a trial by combat

In the sights of gods and men we gather to ascertain the guilt or innocence of this [man/woman, name]

May the Mother grant him mercy.

May the Father give him such justice as he deserve.

May the Warrior guide the hand of our champion.

[interrupted]

-Game of Thrones S4E6

Hymn to the Mother for protection in battle

Gentle Mother, font of mercy, save our sons from war we pray,

Stay the swords and stay the arrows,

Let them know a better day.

Gentle Mother, strength of women,

Help our daughters through this fray.

Soothe the wrath and tame the fury,

Teach us all a kinder way.

-Game of Thrones S2E9

Knight's oath before the Seven

In the name of the Warrior I charge you to be brave.

In the name of the Father I charge you to be just.

In the name of the Mother I charge you to defend [the young*] and innocent.

[Bride and groom join hands.]

GROOM: I am hers and she is mine.

BRIDE: I am his and he is mine.

TOGETHER: From this day and to the end of my days. [Whatever may come.]*

OFFICIATE: Let it be known, [in the sight of Gods and men]* that [bride name] of [bride's House name] and [groom name] of [House name] [are now proclaimed man and wife.]* One heart, and flesh, one soul. Cursed be he who would seek to tear them asunder. [Now and forever.]*

OFFICIATE: May the Warrior give him courage and protect him in these dangerous times.

May the Smith grant him strength that he may bear this heavy burden/lend strength to his sword and shield.*

[May the Father defend him in his need.*]

May the Crone, she that knows the fate of all men, show him the path he must walk and guide him through the dark places that lie ahead.

Just had a random thought. In real life (or on the internet at least), people who I've encountered who give themselves a long list of grandiose titles (some of which they've purchased - doctorates and lordships for example) tend to be insufferable jerkoffs. Maybe that should have been a warning about her character.

Actually thinking further. Does anyone remember Idi Amin? Or more correctly - "His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular". šŸ¤”

I think he may have proclaimed himself King of Scotland and Emperor of the Moon at one point too, though perhaps I'm thinking of someone else.

Cersei and her methods of not getting pregnant by Robert Spoiler

I'm just wondering am I the only one that find it funny when it was revealed in the books how Cersei was able to keep herself from getting pregnant by Robert. Like her methods was literally "what that mouth do". I can't remember her inner monologue word by word but I remembered it was along the line of her eating his children and licking them off her face and hand. When I first read that, I was honestly dying from laughter, like how insane is this lady, she's literally willingly being degraded (depends how you look at the action) to prevent herself from being pregnant, but also to get some sort of satisfaction from actually digesting his children. Like damn girl, you a freak freak. Nothing serious really I just thought it was quite funny.

Watching Hardhome (S5E8) one of the best episodes of the series IMO. I wish Karsi made it past this, she would have been a good character going forward. She just couldn’t get past those little children walkers.
