I was eating a pomegranate today and randomly thought… who was the FIRST person to eat one of these things?
Like, thousands of years ago, somebody looked at a fruit filled with hundreds of tiny red seeds and thought, “Let me see if this is edible.”
And somehow, that thought sent me down a rabbit hole.
How did humans figure out which random plants and fruits were safe to eat? Before science, Google, or grocery stores, people were basically experimenting with whatever they found.
how many people died trying random plants before someone finally struck gold and discovered something delicious?
Imagine being the first person to eat a pineapple. Who looks at a spiky plant with a crown and thinks, “There’s probably something good in there”?
Or the first person to crack open a coconut, try an avocado, or discover a sweet fruit growing on a tree.
Some people probably got very unlucky. Others discovered something amazing and passed that knowledge down through generations.
Now I’m sitting here eating a pomegranate from Walmart, not thinking about the thousands of years of trial and error that went into making fruit something we take for granted.
Because somewhere in history, somebody took a bite of something completely unfamiliar, and we’re all benefiting from it today.
