Edibility / Problem Help 😭

I just bit into precut cantaloupe and it was so bitter that my tongue went numb. I immediately spit it out but my tongue and throat feel very weird. Is this normal for unripe or even bad cantaloupe? I’m worried about tampering because there isn’t an actual seal on the container. (I know this sounds paranoid, but I wouldn’t put it past someone.) All of the other cups in the fridge look the same as this one. I’m going to email the kitchen manager at my job, but I just wanna know what’s going on with these. I tried to google the weird white juice at the bottom of the containers, but couldn’t find anything. Sorry for sounding so paranoid, thank you!

Discussion I was eating a pomegranate and went down a rabbit hole thinking about who discovered fruit

I was eating a pomegranate today and randomly thought… who was the FIRST person to eat one of these things?

Like, thousands of years ago, somebody looked at a fruit filled with hundreds of tiny red seeds and thought, “Let me see if this is edible.”

And somehow, that thought sent me down a rabbit hole.
How did humans figure out which random plants and fruits were safe to eat? Before science, Google, or grocery stores, people were basically experimenting with whatever they found.

how many people died trying random plants before someone finally struck gold and discovered something delicious?

Imagine being the first person to eat a pineapple. Who looks at a spiky plant with a crown and thinks, “There’s probably something good in there”?

Or the first person to crack open a coconut, try an avocado, or discover a sweet fruit growing on a tree.
Some people probably got very unlucky. Others discovered something amazing and passed that knowledge down through generations.

Now I’m sitting here eating a pomegranate from Walmart, not thinking about the thousands of years of trial and error that went into making fruit something we take for granted.

Because somewhere in history, somebody took a bite of something completely unfamiliar, and we’re all benefiting from it today.
