AskFlorida Snakes. How bad are they really? Tampa area.

I have an incredible job offer in Tampa. I love the area, can easily afford it BUT I have an IRRATIONAL fear of snakes. I currently live where we get the occasional garden and water snake in the yard and a few rattlers just a bit south (like 5 miles). I get paralyzed with fear and it’s just not pretty. If I live in a more urban area (single family home with yard) and walk established paths like along the cause way am I relatively safe?

AskFlorida Looking for affordable month-to-month car rentals in Orlando

Hey everyone!
I currently live in Orlando and don’t own a car, so I’ve been renting through Turo. I’m paying around $360 a week ($1,560/month), including insurance, and I’m hoping to find something more affordable.
I’m looking for a reliable car rental on a month-to-month basis, preferably with insurance included or available at a reasonable additional cost.
I only need the vehicle for personal transportation and commuting to work, not Uber, DoorDash, or rideshare.
Does anyone have recommendations for reputable local rental companies, long-term rental programs, or other options I might be overlooking?
I’m open to smaller local businesses as well as larger rental companies. Just looking for something reliable, reasonably priced, and without a long-term commitment.
I’d especially appreciate recommendations from anyone who’s personally rented monthly in the Orlando area.
Thanks in advance!

AskFlorida Navigable waterways

Post image
72 Upvotes

For the most part I understand that most waterways are considered navigable and therefore open to the public to fish/boat in even if the water touches the land of local property owners. And typically in these situations, a person's property boundary ends where the water begins. I get that. But what if my property boundary includes an inlet with a very narrow (3') opening without any other means to access it?

Is this still considered navigable water?

I want to know if I can post signs that say "private Property" at the tiny little entrance to my bayou since my property boundary does include this inlet.

(See pic). I want to do this because some jerk snuck into my inlet a few nights ago in the middle of the night and stole my canoe.

AskFlorida Out of state license plate frames

Ok, so this is a stupid question, and I know most people are going to say that no one really gives a shit, but I'm still curious to hear from people who've lived in Florida longer than I have.

How do people judge license plate frames that are clearly from out of state? I've lived in Florida for over 6 years, and I want to replace my old, sad, and woebegone license plate frame, which is your standard university alumni frame from a Midwestern university that I went to for grad school. But, I'm also originally from California (gasp I know), and honestly have more of an attachment to my California university than my Midwestern one, so I'm considering getting a license plate frame from there.

I'm pretty convinced that drivers were even more rude to me than the normal level of rude Floridian driving when I still had California plates. Doubly so in other Southern states. But of course, with a Midwestern license plate frame, drivers just think I'm some snowbird.

So, which is better? Get a license plate frame that brands me as from California, or one that just makes me look like a stupid snowbird taking over Florida? Or, should I just go full Floridian and let my license plate be naked and free, rolling down the highway until the cops catch me?

And also in general, what judgements do you make of license plates or frames from out of state? Are there specific states that you just have a visceral reaction to when you see a driver clearly from there?

AskFlorida Newbie landscaping questions

1) What month is the best time to have landscaping done by?
2) What month has the best deals?
3) what stores do you recommend for DIY or should I just hire a landscaper?

PS - I have zero clue what I’m doing or what to start with. I’m a homeowner for years now and never touched my front yard

AskFlorida Looking for ENT / Sinus Surgeon Recommendations in Florida

I’m looking for a highly experienced sinus specialist who regularly performs image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery. I’m located in Palm Beach Gardens but willing to travel anywhere in Florida for the right surgeon.

I’m 23, a competitive boxer with asthma, and have dealt with 2–3 sinus infections annually throughout my life. However, my current infection has lasted over 60 days, unlike anything I’ve experienced before.
After three rounds of antibiotics, prednisone, nasal rinses, and an allergic reaction to my final antibiotic, I’m still unable to breathe properly through my nose, have virtually no sense of smell, and continue experiencing facial pressure. Three weeks after finishing treatment, I’m nowhere near my previous baseline.

A close family friend, a now-retired, world-renowned ENT in Philadelphia, is positive my structural obstruction requires surgery. Unfortunately, my current ENT in the Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens area has continued pushing me off week after week with little initiative, I’m more than ready to move on.

I’m looking for a skilled surgeon who performs these procedures frequently and can evaluate me as soon as possible.

My life has essentially been on hold for two months. Being unable to train or breathe normally has taken a significant physical and mental toll.

Any recommendations from those who’ve undergone sinus surgery or work in healthcare would be greatly appreciated!

Politics Byron Donalds is pro–data centers. So is his stock portfolio.

The Republican candidate vying to replace Gov. Ron DeSantis told a group of Miami businesses last spring that Florida was “wide open” for development. “We have actual land in our state that is still pristine, available to use,” he said at the time. Amid growing evidence of the unpopularity of data centers among voters, he nonetheless dug in, bashing other candidates, like David Jolly, now the Democratic nominee, who had proposed moratoriums.

“There ain’t no bans coming,” Donalds said at a campaign event in August. “But it sounds good on TV. Or it sounds good on social media.”

Politics Early Voting has started! Oct 19-31

Early voting has started for many counties and runs through October 31st.

Check with your county Supervisor of Elections for your county's early voting schedule and locations.

Vote-by-Mail Request Deadline - Oct 22

Request for a Mail-in Ballot must be made to your Supervisor of Elections before 5pm (local) on October 22nd.

https://dos.fl.gov/elections/for-voters/voting/vote-by-mail/

Election Day: November 3rd, 2026

I am already registered to vote but I have moved/changed my name since the last election. Is this deadline applicable to me?

If you made any changes of that nature, please update your registration with the link above before the deadline!

When can I vote in-person?

If you are registered to vote, you can vote during your county's early election period. By law, early voting must be held at least for 8 days.

Each county Supervisor of Elections may offer more days of early voting. Check with your county Supervisor of Elections for the additional days of early voting that may be offered in your county.

Election Day is November 3, 2026. Check with your county Supervisor of Elections for your Election Day Polling Location.

When can I request a mail-in ballot?

The deadline to request that a vote-by-mail ballot be mailed is no later than 5:00 p.m. (local time) on the 10th day before the election. For this year’s election, that would be October 22. Source

Check with your county Supervisor of Elections for how to request a mail in ballot.

When should I be receiving my mail-in ballot?

Supervisors of Elections send the ballots during a 7-day window which is between 40 and 33 days before an election.

For more information about voting by mail, please visit the Florida Department of Election Vote-by-Mail page.

I registered for a mail in ballot last election, do I need request one again?

YES! Check with your county Supervisor of Elections for how to request a mail in ballot.

I am a registered Democrat/Independent/Republican. Am I allowed to vote for people on the ballot that have a different affiliation from me?

Yes, you can vote for any candidate in the General Election. Who you vote for is secret.

Do I have to vote in every races on the ballot?

You can leave a race blank if you choose to and your vote will still be counted on other races that you vote on, on your ballot. However, try your best to make an informed vote on every race on the ballot.

Where can I find more information on the candidates or amendments?

In addition to the candidate's website (which, if they have one, can be found through googling the candidate's name) Ballotpedia.org usually has some information on down ballot races and amendments as well.

The best source on local elections would be the major newspaper for your area (Tampa Bay Times, Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, etc). They interview almost every candidate of every race that is happening in the area so you can find out the positions of every candidate on each issue. They will also talk about any local referendum or proposals relevant to your city or county.
