Tool to help decide which judges to vote for

Thumbnail s3.amazonaws.com
• Upvotes

Take a look at the 2026 judicial review document linked above. In the document are bios for all judges in Iowa, but even more useful, towards the end of the document are “scores” for each judge as rated by attorneys who have worked with the judges (the scores are based on surveys submitted by the Iowa STATE Bar Association).

I used this tool to identify judges in my area, where I looked closely at judges with a aggregate score less than 90% (which is just my own arbitrary cut off level based on review of the scores in my area).

Hope this use helpful!

What is this building?

Does anyone know what this building is? It is between Ingersoll and Grand (behind the starbucks on ingersoll). I noticed it on my walk today and it looked like it’s supposed to be residential. It doesn’t look like people currently live there. I also could not tell if this building was in the works of being torn down. I am just curious / nosey bc I just moved to this part of town. thanks in advance!

Liver and onions

• Upvotes

Anyone have recommendations for restaurants with good liver and onions?

I've been trying to find ways to get more liver in my diet but I haven't really found a good way to cook them. I've tried the milk soak and using calf liver but to no avail. It's probably just me overcooking them or something.

I do enjoy liver in things like braunschweiger so I think I'd like the taste. Long story short I'd like to try it made by someone that does it well so I can at least have an idea of what it should taste like so I can keep trying at home.

Meeting People

More of a vent than anything. I moved to Des Moines a few months ago and am just completely struggling to find community here. I’ve tried events advertised or discussed here, and either it’s a ghost-town or millennials/older folks (for context I’m in my 20s). I’ve gone to events advertised as “meet new people” and have found that most people are already in their pre-defined bubbles and are not interested in talking to strangers. I’ve tried dating apps, and have had poor experiences. I’m just at a loss. I big problem is that I’m young and I really do not like the bar scene, so shooting myself in the foot there, but it’s been months now, and I’m just super lonely and feel so out of place here.

Open to suggestions of course. Just wanted to vent.

Book sale at the fairgrounds

• Upvotes

I unfortunately could not go to the book sale this past weekend. The one in spring had bookmarks that had the date for this last one. Like save the date kind of bookmark.

Did they give those out last weekend? Can anybody tell me when the next sale will be? I'm super bummed I couldn't make it a single day. I just want to make sure I can go to the next one.

Does anyone play Heroclix and/or Marvel RPG (and allow new/novice players)?

I’m looking to break into either of these as a new hobby. If you know of any spaces or people that play and are willing adopt me as a new player, please promote or suggest them below. Thanks!

Ever had an encounter with coyotes in the city?

I live in Ankeny, and while out walking in my neighborhood saw what appeared to be a coyote dart out in front of me? It was very quiet and moved quickly, it also didn’t pay me much notice. For what it’s worth, it could have also been a very lean unleashed husky, but I had a gut feeling.

I know you can hear and see them in Des Moines and are not dangerous unless you have small pets or they are sick, but it was cool to see (while also slowly backing away lol). Has anyone else ever ran into them in the city?

Why are there so many sirens lately?

Title says it all. I'm down near the Highland Park area (won't say specifically where for safety) and in the past few days the presence of sirens (both police and EMT) are going absolutely bonkers. Can barely sleep for it triggers a fear response.

Any reason why they've been more active lately?

Beef Hot Dog

This is a bit of an odd request. I normally don’t enjoy hot dogs, but I had a beef hot dog at Val Air Ballroom a couple weeks ago and I’m wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of anywhere in the area that sells similarly tasting hot dogs! Gas stations, fast food, etc.

I am a pregnant lady with cravings, so this is an important request for me (and yes, my OB said it was fine to have an occasional hot dog). TIA!!

Mpls to Des Moines - Family of 3

We are a family of 3 with an almost 5-year-old daughter contemplating a move from Minneapolis to Des Moines. We have been to Des Moines several times and love the vibe & environment. Main reason we are considering the move is pretty simple: housing is significantly less and inner-city schools are rated higher. We are progressive, politically liberal and would love diversity. Big Timberwolves fans and are pumped about the Iowa Wolves. :) Also big fans of Exile and breweries in general. We are still considering an apartment versus a house rental. Would love realistic opinions from those who actually live/work/school their kids in Des Moines. A-holes will be ignored. Thx!

Russian construction crew radio chatter near downtown

I thought it entertaining listening to a Russian construction crew's FRS walky-talkies in the downtown area. I had to ask Genesis wtf they were saying. Last week they were giving a crane operator directions in English.

Tennis/Pickleball Clubs DSM

I (28m) just moved to Des Moines and I’m wondering if there are any casual or organized clubs for tennis/pickleball or rock climbing clubs in the area. I fully know winter is around the corner but looking toward next year, or indoors over the winter (if that exists?)

I’ve done a little research on the topic online but it keeps just showing me options to join health/country clubs and not what I’m after.

I’m not super skilled but I really like playing and looking to meet others with the same interest - a casual and social hangout would be intriguing on a weekly or some other basis.

Honestly also open to any other social recommendations anyone might have outside of sports too, feel free to drop them below!

Urbandale Auto body is Closed

I need a dent repaired. One body shop recommendation was Urbandale Auto Body on 70th St.

I went there today. They're closed. For Good. Sign on the door says that after 70 years and three generations, they have closed for good.

I went to Graham for an estimate. Had to make an appointment for next week to get an estimate.

Did anyone else get extremely sick while living at the Parker @ 7th DSM, IA

I’m making this post because I’ve recently heard something that honestly has me questioning what was going on in my old apartment at The Parker @ 7th in Des Moines.
While my boyfriend and I lived there, we both started experiencing some really severe symptoms. We would wake up in the mornings feeling incredibly nauseous, daily vomiting (always in the morning/ before work), and experiencing intense panic attacks that genuinely made us feel like we were dying. It wasn’t just normal stress or feeling a little sick. It got to the point where my anxiety and depression became so severe that I had to take a MONTH off work and seek help at a behavioral health center.
At the time, I had no idea what was happening to us or why we were feeling this way.
Now, we’ve heard that a coworker of my boyfriend’s who currently lives in the same complex has been experiencing very similar symptoms. Apparently, a huge roof leak was also discovered, with reports of water damage that had been going on for years.
I’m not saying I can prove these things are connected, but hearing about the leak and someone else experiencing similar symptoms has genuinely alarmed me. I can’t help but wonder whether there could have been an environmental issue in the building that we didn’t know about while we were living there.
Has anyone else who lives or has lived at The Parker @ 7th experienced unexplained nausea, vomiting, waking up feeling extremely sick, severe anxiety, or other unusual symptoms? Have you heard anything about the roof leak, long-term water damage, or possible mold issues?
I would really appreciate hearing from current or former residents. I’m sharing this because I want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar and whether there is more information about what was happening in that building.

Waukee driver’s license updates

Has anybody done a walk in to renew their driver’s license here? I have an appointment in November, but I’d rather do it sooner if possible so was thinking about trying to do a walk in, maybe right when they open.

Does anyone have any experience with this at the Waukee dmv location?

Need a Serious Gym Recommendation

I have been a member of AnyTime Fitness for a couple years. It’s been great for losing weight and getting in shape. Now I want to get shredded and want to join a gym where that is the main focus. I’ve been reading about Krave Gym but don’t know anyone who is a member there. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Huge crowd on University Ave?

I guess East University. Like 100+ people are outside the broadlawns clinic with debris and police, anyone know what’s going on?
