Story Told my kid the moon is a potato while out for a walk. I got a laugh but my assertion was rejected, so I asked a random bloke on the street. He understood the assignment immediately and backed me up. It was very funny.

He said, Oh yeah, everyone knows the moon is a potato! Kiddo kept laughing, it was good fun. Thank you random stranger, you legend.

Story My son has gotten into paw patrol and it's so bad

We started him on Bluey, Thomas, Seseme Street and Ms Rachel. He's 3. But I can't with paw patrol. It's so baaaaad. Bluey tells stories, has an actual art style and has soul. Paw patrol is so generic.

Advice Request How do I encourage my daughter in soccer without making her think it isn’t tied to her success?

• Upvotes

This weekend, it finally became clear that my 9 year old is exceptional in soccer, and is getting better every year. She scored her second hat trick of the season. She’s on a team she grew up with and they’re all friends. They’re undefeated this season through the power of friendship. And my daughter is the MVP.

I’m a huge fan of soccer and played up until undergrad. After the game, I excitedly went up to her and said she gets to pick where we go to dinner because she scored a hat trick.

On the way to MCD’s (of course,) I realized I don’t want her to associate me giving her these rewards solely attached to her success on the pitch. Even though I always tell her that the game is supposed to be fun, and that’s why we play, I’m still a bit worried of accidentally having her associate winning with my support.

I don’t foresee a scenario where she doesn’t continue to improve every year, which she has for the last 4 seasons.

I’m sure other Dads have dealt with this before. So, how have you encouraged and supported your kids in sports without accidentally becoming the Dad in Varsity Blues?

Traditional pancake birthday breakfast tomorrow morning, but it's going to be a hurried morning so I made them tonight.

He is the best kid. I can't believe I only have 3 or so more years left with him under my roof. He just became an Eagle Scout last week too, and so many things about him make me so proud to be his dad.

It is true what they say, the days are long but the years are short. Enjoy the time you have with them, fellow dads.

Advice Request What are your thoughts on Roblox?

• Upvotes

I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember (mostly Call of Duty) but I have no experience with this.

My 3rd grade son has a switch 2 and mostly plays sports games, Pokémon and some Smash Bros. He’s been asking for this but I’m honestly not sure what the game is about and I don’t want him having voice or text chats with strangers.

What’s the dad consensus on this game?

UPDATE - Thanks to all the dads for their responses- it won’t be allowed in our house

The hospital gave my wife a giant water bottle after my son was born. Now it has a new purpose. I’ve already made my way through one full 32 Oz bottle of hell lemonade, and I still have 32 oz to go.

Discussion What is the sassiest thing your daughter has said to you?

I was in the kitchen when my 9 year old daughter once came through the front door looking upset. She burst through the door, glowered at me, and then stomped off to her room crying.

I called out to her: "Honey are you OK? What's up?"

She yelled back: "YOU CAN'T HELP, YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF STYLE!" and then slammed her bedroom door.

Decided it might be good to let things calm down before I addressed that one.

What bold and impudent responses have you got from your daughter(s)?

Kid Picture/Video Speech delayed son just showed me what he thinks of “Dada”

Post image

So just over a month ago after noticing that my baby boy hasn’t started speaking at all by 14 months old, we got in touch with the early intervention just to have a little look at him. There were (and still are) a bunch of delays between us and the three therapists who were supposed to come visit, but the people who have been so far have told us that they can confirm he has a speech delay.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks, lots of stressing about his future, what this means or could mean, waiting for the speech language therapist to visit etc. One thing that has ramped up is our call and (maybe one day) response training. We’re doing signs, going hand over hand, singing, watching Miss Rachel, reading. And I’ve been saying “Dada” to him whenever we’re hanging out, in transit, playing. Any chance I get.

No dice. But here’s a picture from five minutes ago of him having successfully torn the cover off of his “Dada” board book so, you know, maybe he needs me to dial it back.

Achievements I just beat a pokemon game playing as my daughter

Hey fellow dads and lurking mums. I have been gaming all my life, but I recently got tired of it. Trying to balance a fun and entertaining life with a 2.5 years old beautiful girl, my wife, house renovation, etc... I just find myself staring at my Xbox game library and can't find anything to play. So I decided to try some rom hack on my phone and what a nice surprise. I have been playing Pokémon Unbound and I'm hooked. It please my gaming craving and hit the memory button.

I have been playing as my daughter and picked up a team of pokemon that suits her and her little world.

I have recently finished the Elite 4 and wanted to share my team with yoh

Dragonite - this is my favorite pokemon so I had to add it to the list.

Tyrantrum - she is really into her Dizors at the moment

Rapidash - she loves horses

Butterfree - spring is here and she loves spotting the butterflies on our walks

Sharpedo - thanks grandad for introducing baby shark. She demands it on every.car.rides !!

Mareep - her little sleep companion Sleepy Sheepy has been with her for a long time so i picked mareep as a nice homage.

Are there any other dad gamer that has done similar things?

Thank you Daddit, I have been lurking for a long time and you guys have been a good entertainment and help on my Papa's journey

Kiddo is just about 5 months old. Teething. He has never slept through the night. I work and she's a SAHM. When he was a little potato we could hang out all the time because he'd be sleeping but now he's just so wild, and loud, and needs constant full attention. We do our best, she does nights because I work but man it's just brutal and it gets me sad.

We get maybe an hour of us time a night without having to give our energy to him. I feel like we're losing our connection because of it. How can we have a connection if we get an hour - 1.5 hours a night together and we're already both exhausted from the day before we have to go to bed.

The weekends are okay, but it's the same deal really. I just am happy because I get to hang out with my son as much as possible. I'm not saying any of the above because I'm regretting it, or I dislike him or anything like that. I just miss having time together. We don't have family so there's no real break, and we can't get a babysitter yet for date nights.

I hope it gets better soon. We're both just so tired from the night wake ups and have to go to bed so early to compensate, then we're up super early either for work or for him. Anyone else go through this? I'm certain it's a common thing. Would love your tips or support.

Support Incapable of fatherhood joy

I’m a bipolar father of 4yo boy and 3yo girl. My mom just took the kids out of town for a few nights, I had a great long weekend with the wife, the kids have been home for about 13 hours, mostly sleeping, and I already hate my life again.

My mom took the kids to give us a few days of rest after I experienced a night of strong manic feelings again. It was great, I got full nights rest, spent time with my wife and I’s mutual friends, got to spend a long morning fishing with one of my day one’s, and had excellent quality time with my wonderful wife, we even had sex like 5 times.

This is probably one of those “my life is too great woe is me type posts” trust me fellas I know most of y’all got it harder out there. I am grateful for my life but I just feel like a shell of myself as a father to these wonderful children.

I think it’s got a lot to do with my own mental health which maybe I could do better with but I feel like I already am maxed out on prioritizing myself. Sleep is a big factor, I don’t do well if I don’t get 8 hours of sleep a night. Lately my daughter has been relentlessly coming to sleep with my wife and I in our queen bed which throws me off big time. Other than that my life is perfect other than my own demons.

I thought a few nights of good rest and the break from the kids would help me out, but today I just hate my life again like I didn’t get a break at all. I’m on medication, I see my psychiatrist a few times a year and I just recently stopped therapy after making massive improvements. (I’m sure I’ll be calling my therapist back right after this post.)

Anyways, my kids are great, fucking brilliant, but they’re just at that age where I can’t blink without them needing something or just being annoying generally. I hate it. I preferred the baby stages to this toddler bs. I think I’m just incapable of appreciating the small moments. People say you get what you put in and I feel like I’m putting in 10000% just to get like 2% joy back from them. I think I’m just hard wired for short term gains or something like I hate fatherhood. I just want them to grow up and move out already most of the time.

Not to mention they’re wasteful little shits who eat up 90% of my paycheck after the bills are paid just to not give a fuck about they’re playdoh, or the 2 bites out of the mac and cheese box I made for them that took 20 minutes while my youngest shits on the floor. It’s like, what should be a simple task ends up into an hour and a half of cleaning, because I had my back turned to make the food.

I’m looking for support, advice, reality check, whatever you got. I know the finest things in life take time and patience, I guess I’ve just always struggled with that. Maybe I should start aging whiskey, at least that would take less constant attention.

Achievements Start vs finish of my 8yo and me crossing Newcastle without walking along a single road (17.5 miles)

Post image
476 Upvotes

Rules were simple. You can cross roads, you just can't walk along them. In a city that mostly means riverside paths, back lanes, parks and a worrying amount of brambles.

Took nearly 10 hours. Along the way we got locked inside a university and had to squeeze out under the gate, hid in some allotments, and I went face first into a bramble patch. She talked me through it like a hostage negotiator. "Just do it, and then you won't be in any pain."

Right hand photo is her at the finish, lying in the grass, done. Fair enough tbh.

My wife's review of the day: "I don't understand how you're enjoying it."

We also filmed a Youtube video, which I was pretty skeptical about, but it just made the mission feel more real and special. Also a great way to make sure we keep the memories.

I’ll go first. Cleaning my glasses. I have never cleaned my glasses so many times in my life as I have in the past 7 months. I have flexible frames specifically so my son can’t break them but may god strike me down if I haven’t cleaned them more times in the past 7 months than I have in the past couple years.

Advice Request How to talk about grandpa's alzheimer's diagnosis with the kids

Hey dads - got some unfortunate news last week that my FIL has atypical Alzheimer's. It's very mild at the moment but the MRI and PET scans show us what's to come. He's a great FIL and granddad to his 7 grandkids (two are mine) and is very close with all of them. We grown-up kids and spouses are all doing our best to manage but I'm wondering how to approach this with my 5th and 7th graders. We feel like they're old enough to understand the facts of the disease, but what that turns into in real life - memory issues, mood swings, inability to do all the things he used to do with them - I'm not sure how to prepare and support my kids. He's in tremendous physical shape otherwise and has been highly independent in his senior years, which in a weird way makes it worse because "all of a sudden" one day he won't be the guy taking them on hikes and getting ice cream afterwards, helping them tweak their baseball swing, etc. Advice, recommendations, experiences welcome.

Advice Request Dads of young kids: how do you actually keep exercise going?

Dad of two (2 and 7), late 30s. I got in decent shape a few years ago, then lost it all after our second was born. Broken sleep, no spare energy, and any free time is already spoken for.

For those of you who've made it stick, even imperfectly:

  • How do you carve out the time without it costing your partner?
  • What do you do after a week where everything falls apart (sick kid, travel, work)?
  • Was there a point where you stopped relying on motivation, and what replaced it?

Curious what's really worked, not the ideal version.

Support Division of Labor

Hey dads,

My wife and I both have full-time jobs but she goes to the office. And because of this, I always do the morning routine. Every single day. So she can sleep as long as she possibly can during the week, and get some rest of the weekend.

But that often means I end up having to do literally everything in the morning, which led to a big argument this morning because she asked me to put his shoes on so she could finish getting ready, but I was packing his lunch so I asked her to put his shoes on. This led to a bigger argument about how she forgot her wallet and was all frazzled and how I’m oblivious and how she needs my help when she’s trying to get ready for work, etc.

I guess my question is, does that sound reasonable? If one partner has to go to work should the other one be expected to do literally every thing to get the kid ready for daycare while the other one collects their things for work? My wife seems to think so, and this has just led to many little arguments and I’m getting really frustrated, especially when I’m told that I’m not helping her - because I feel like that’s all I’m doing.

Advice Request Feeling pretty low

Dad to a wonderful 7 month old, but recently been feeling really down. We moved shortly before he was born to be nearer to my wife’s family, but I don’t know anyone bar them. I work remotely so don’t really see anyone, and frankly don’t have the time or opportunity to get out and do the things I enjoy.

I’ve tried early morning lifting but I can’t sustain it and tbh I’m smoked by lunchtime if I do. I get morning sun, eat well, get 7 hours sleep a night. But despite all that I feel spaced out most of the time. No amount of caffeine can wake me up. I’ve also tried meditation previously but it’s not for me.

Anyone else feel similar and what helped you turn a corner?

Support Possibly having to walk away from my daughter

So basically as the title explains I’m possibly going to have to walk away from my daughter.
I’m a first time dad and she is currently 2 weeks old, the last 9 months have been nothing but a hell scape throughout the pregnancy.
And even continuing into the birth which is absolutely destroying me.
So for the facts of this me and my now ex partner are long distance and there was plans to move me to her country throughout the year which was continually put off and avoided. So I am stuck watching my daughter grow through a phone.
To add her she refused to add me to the birth certificate and ultimately ended up putting her ex husbands surname which she shares 2 kids with already hyphenated with my surname which I’ve already tried discussing but she won’t talk to me about it.
Last night I found out in the hospital she had bought a name tag to put in the bassinet to say hi my name is….
I found out she never put my surname on this what so ever it was her ex’s surname and then when I’ve asked for the photos there has always been an excuse as to why they can’t be sent. I honestly am at a complete loss right now i don’t know what to do and i feel she is going to come back and walk away I’m genuinely devastated right now

Story Dads encouraging dads is the best.

Earlier this evening I was out running an errand with my 10 month old son. I had parked in the parking lot, and I was in the middle of getting him strapped into his carrier on my chest to head into the store. The area wasn't busy, and I noticed a big dude with a big beard come out of the store and get into his car.

I was just minding my business and this guy rolls his window down and says "Hey! You're doing great!" and give me a thumbs up before driving away.

Y'all, I had a smile on my face for my whole shop.

This is was in SE PA. My man, if you're here reading this, you made my night.

Discussion What's the Deal with Religion in Your Home?

I am an millennial dad. Growing up nearly everyone in my northeast town went to church but I don't remember anyone being actually religious and by high school I think a lot of families and kids had fallen off going to church at all. I grew up in a house where we only did like 3 big holidays a year and never went to church and my parents didn't seem to believe and I never believed in anything myself. My wife is agnostic and doesn't care outside of decorating and the other non religious aspects.

My core friend group and even extended I can't think of a person who is religious in their heart and I'm struggling to even think if I know anyone who regularly attends church. Are you religious? Do you know religious people and do you plan to raise your kid with religion?

I don't want to make my kid a target or ostracize them but I'm not going to teach them anything I don't believe and wouldn't be opposed to showing them how maybe religions are ridiculous and make no sense but again at school and other places that kind of thing might not go over so well. I'm also not really open to them being taught what all the religious stuff is by other people. Its a weird spot.
