I’ve been experimenting recently with using cyanotype on my medical images. This piece is an MRI of my brain digitally superimposed on a flower, with free motion machine embroidery and trapunto quilting to create depth.

I’ve just been trying things for a week, so very new. I’ve used fresh flora and negatives printed on transparencies so far. I’m using hot press watercolor paper.

The second print also has some red wine I added to the paper after the chemicals dried, before I exposed it. (I dried the paper again post-red wine.)

A quite difficult photograph for this process, as the dark areas appear somehow brighter than blues. I'm working on the black layer currently, so I'm going to present it a bit later. Anyway, I like the print even now, so I'm glad to share it with you, guys!

UV light recommendations

Howdy folks,

I just recently got into cyanotypes last month in September and have been loving it! I’m currently based in TX 🤠 and next month in November we will be going back an hour. I keep telling everyone this is the perfect time to start getting into cyanotypes 🤣!! With this being said i’m looking into purchasing a UV light for these next few winter months so I can continue doing them. After reading recommendations in this subreddit i’ve come to learn that:
100w = less exposure time while 50w = longer exposure time & that 365nm is better for cyanotypes compared to 395nm.

I’ve been searched up UV light recommendations in this subreddit and the “Everbeam 365nm 50W UV LED Black Light” keeps popping up. While the overall feedback is that this light is good & does its job some say it starts lacking some months after purchasing.

i wanted to ask recommendations about these other two lights. Has anyone purchased them and have any insight?
Ekuivel 50W UV Black Light, 365nm Ultraviolet LED
Nunulumho 365nm 50W True UV LED Black Lights

Like i mentioned ive only been doing this for about a month so everything is still new to me! Any recommendations/feedback is greatly appreciated. whether it’s for UV light recommended or cyanotypes tips, thanks y’all!!

Cyanotype solargraphs help

I teach an honors astronomy class for high schoolers and want to make solargraphs using cyanotype paper and a pinhole camera made out of two 12oz soda cans. It seems like a fun 1-day build that they just leave out and come back to in 3 months when we start the units on stars.

The thing I'm worried about is humidity. I teach in Florida and while it is starting to cool down I want to know if there's anything extra I need to do to the paper to protect the image from ambient moisture. I only care about seeing the sun's paths throughout each day in the final image; tracking its height over the course of winter is the point of the project. Seeing the variations in each line would be a bonus, opening discussions about the causes of dark spots in the lines or why some lines are missing entirely.

Cyanotype Animation on Waste Denim

1.6k Upvotes

Sharing a recent animation I did on waste denim for the musician Girl in Red's recent track Blue. I basically got loads of cut offs of denim and used trousers from thrift stores, then had to cut them into pieces large and flat enough for the contact sheets.

Because of the stitching, I'd often have to trim it down so the contact sheet would lay flat on the negative, which even after doing still resulted in some loss of detail. In addition, the denim took up so much emulsion, even using a spray coating method. Roughly 10-20ml of denim per a4 print (12 frames = 1 second of animation). And then drying the pieces took forever before printing and hoping for the best! But still glad the way it turned out.

My insta is @_eddcarr_ if you are interested in seeing some BTS!
