2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

That’s the carfax, is it worth 10k? I’m trying to find a 1st or 2nd gen CRV low mileage or atleast 90-150k miles, clean title priced reasonably and when I find one it’s so far away I live in Ohio and I can’t find shit

like who wanted this lmaoo? who thought this was the direction to take the CR-V in?? 😭 maybe that was just the thing to do at the time, but compared to the previous 2 generations it's giving those images comparing healthy pugs to inbred ones

Issue ⚠️ Park, Reverse, and Neutral don't 'stick'. D3, 2, and 1 nearly impossible to shift into. (Reposted for video of problem)

This is 1997 automatic Honda CRV.

A bit ago, I ran into a series of troubles. Went to replace my CV axle, accidentally strip the ball joint, etc.

But during the replacement, my car stopped working. My friend who was helping me, though it might be the neutral switch and *vigorously shifted gears up and down, from P though all of to D1 and back repeatedly.* I'm pretty sure that whatever loosened or broke, did so then.

But I haven't been able to find it. I replaced the shift gear selector in it's entirety, and nothing. It wouldn't be the cable would it? I took a video of what it's doing. But this thing sadly doesn't have a shift linkage bushing. So many things said that's what I need to fix, and it doesn't have one.

Question ❔ 2027 CRV Sport L AWD for target $36,500 (before Tax & fee) in Dec26 or early 2027

Is it realistic to ask around in Los Angeles county area? I’m flexible on the timing and willing to go 100-150 miles out to get the deal (Ventura/oxnard to Temecula area). Value your advice on pricing if I call and ask the dealers since the online MSRP post I am seeing are 42,500.

Question ❔ Seeking advice - 2016 CR-V for $8k USD/$11k CAD for 152k mi / 245k km

Hi all! I am thinking of test-driving/purchasing a 2016 Honda CR-V with 152,235 miles for $7,700 USD / 245,000 km for $10,900 CAD. I would appreciate any thoughts on whether this is a good condition or price to reconcile the higher mileage! (Pics enclosed)

Usually I'd ask my dad, but he's not here anymore so I figured I might turn to the good people of the internet. I would really appreciate any help from people who know cars, since I don't know much other than what I've been googling. I did read on other threads/blogs about how I should steer clear of 150,000+ miles / 200,000+ km cars, but this price looks good and the condition seems well-kept! So I'm curious if this is a good buy (or if maybe I'm just exhausted from car-searching and getting worn down, lol).

Just looking for a car for the next few years, so don't expect it to last forever (ideally as long as possible though, of course - I'm a fresh graduate so just starting my career!)

I will say that I'm Atlantic Canadian (hence the double units in this post haha), so I live in a coastal place with snow in the winter. But I'm mainly a city driver, where there isn't a lot of snow on the roads themselves but there is a lot of salt, thanks to the city's plows. Not sure if that matters but figured I'd share for context re potential maintenance.

The listing's description is below for context:

  • "2016 Honda CR-V Touring AWD – Fully Loaded – Fresh Inspection – $10,900 CAD
  • Selling our 2016 Honda CR-V Touring AWD, the top trim. We're moving to a minivan for our growing family, and this SUV has been reliable for us.
  • Details:
  • About 245,000 km
  • 2.4L 4-cylinder, automatic (CVT), all-wheel drive 2 owners, no accidents
  • Fresh motor vehicle inspection, just completed and valid for 2 years
  • Brand new rear brakes
  • Regular oil changes and maintenance
  • Features Leather seats, heated front seats
  • Navigation, backup camera, Honda LaneWatch camera
  • Power sunroof
  • Power tailgate
  • Adaptive cruise control, forward collision and lane departure warnings
  • Push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Bluetooth
  • 2 Keys
  • Good overall condition inside and out. There's a minor scrape on the plastic front bumper cover, shown in the photos."

I am worried because of any transmission issues, but not sure if that's a true concern or if I'm just coincidentally coming across a smaller group of unfortunate commenters in other posts...

Thank you so much in advance! Appreciate any advice!

Question ❔ Hub-centric rings for OZ Racing wheels on a Honda CRV in Australia

Thumbnail

I recently purchased a set of OZ Racing wheels (the ones found on a Mitsubishi Evolution VI and manufactured by Enkei) from a seller who had them on his Honda Prelude track car. He also supplied me with 4 hubcentric rings (these from Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08MDGZR7V?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title) that I installed on my Honda CRV 2016 today, along with new tyres, however, the hubcentric rings from Amazon aren't wide enough to actually fill the gap.

While they do fit the hub of 64.1mm of my Honda CRV and inside the 67.1 diameter of the wheels, I’ve been told that they’re not wide enough and I may require tapered or beveled hub-centric rings.

I've attached photos of the current hub centric rings, the CRVs hub and how they fit inside the wheels for your reference.

I've checked with the tyre shop where I bought the tyres from, a custom wheels workshop who didn't have ANY Hubcentric rings except 73mm and suggested boring out my current wheels to 73mm and selling me a set of those rings instead and another tyre place who suggested I contact a proper wheel shop that does custom jobs, but they quoted me AUD 160 for a set of 4 rings, which seemed steep to me.

I've now swapped them back with the factory/original stock rims again as it's not safe to drive on these new rims until I get hubcentric rings that actually fit properly since my lug nuts are mag seat lugs since that's what these wheels accommodate.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can buy these locally within Australia?

Just got this crv from my grandmother who drove it maybe three times a month over the last 20 years. Definitely hasn’t touched 70 miles per hour since she bought it in 2006 the day before my baptism. Was told some of you guys would be interested in seeing it!!! This is my first car at 20 and would love to know anything important about older Hondas. Would also love to get a worth estimate! Hit me up!!!

Issue ⚠️ Cr-V 2008 Windshield Wiper

Post image

Can anyone help me with this problem i’m having. I don’t know why these windshield wipers won’t fit my 08 honda cr-v? I looked for the right size (26”) for my car’s model and year but I don’t know if it’s the wrong size for my model or the wiper is faulty. What size does everyone get for their car for the driver side wiper?

Edit: It was indeed the wrong wiper. I didn’t know there were different types 😭 I did end up buying the beam type and it was perfect! Thanks everyone (•:

Question ❔ My sub is to big and thinking about get an all in one

Hi! I currently own a 2000 Honda CR-V. When I was in high school, I installed a massive subwoofer setup for the car: two 10-inch subs. Now, I’m looking to replace the setup because it takes up too much space. My question is, what all-in-one system would you guys recommend, or is there a cheaper option I might not have considered?

Issue ⚠️ Problems With my CR-V

Hello

I have a 2026 Honda CR-V SPORT HYBRID, and the thing is, this car has given me nothing but trips to the dealership.

I have put about 12,500 miles on it, and for some reason, its ruise control just slams on the brakes for no reason.

My first time this happened was at 2980 miles, can dealership just checked it, this is the tire was low.

Then again at 5500ish miles, it returns, but this time I took it again to the dealership. And he kept it for 2 days, and replaced the wheel speed sensor because that was malfunctioning for some reason. Alongside, they replaced the tire just in case.

Now at exactly 12,480 miles, the same thing is happening and i've scheduled again with the dealership to get it checked out. Another problem has now arisen, where the steering wheel just locks up. While i'm driving and it makes like a creaking sound, and gets really heavy at randomly.

My appointment for tomorrow to dealership. Wants to keep it for at least 3-4 days. Which i'm okay with, but my brand new car for just to stay at the dealership is just stressful.

Otherwise that I love this car, but the technical problems i've had with this are just mind blowing For me specifically as i got it brand new.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

Edit: I changed 42 to 2 as its 2 days, not 42, sorry.

Question ❔ 2026 CR-V owners, how is the second row holding up?

We’re considering a Honda CRV 2026 as the family car, and I’m trying to think through the boring stuff before it gets annoying. The second row is going to get everything: kid shoes, snacks, wet umbrellas, and probably one mystery spill nobody owns up to. For current CR-V owners, is the rear floor coverage fairly easy to manage, or are there gaps around the seat rails and center area that collect everything? I’m mainly trying to figure out whether fit around the second row matters more than the material, because that seems like the first spot families destroy when the floor mats don’t cover the right areas.

Question ❔ Check Keyless Access System

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! English is not my first language, so I hope you can understand me. I hope you’re all doing well.

I recently bought a 2018 Honda CR-V Touring. The vehicle had been involved in an accident on the right-hand side, damaging both doors and the right fender. All of these parts have been replaced, and honestly, the vehicle runs amazingly well.

The only issue that remains is this error code, which is shown in the attached picture.

The car was scanned, and the scanner suggested a possible problem with the passenger-side door antenna. They cleared the error code, but it keeps coming back.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, or has anyone experienced something similar?

The car runs and starts without any problems, but the rear tailgate won’t open using the button on the remote key fob. I’ve already replaced the key fob batteries, but the problem persists.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Question ❔ Anyone got a video of these old head units working?

I rarely see any with a screen from standard, of course it's far different from the modern fancy head units that come with more than you'll ever need, and no doubt the satnav is long outdated - but I'd love to actually see one working and how the interface is but I can't find any videos online at all.

Anyone know a video?

After 246,566 miles, I decided to let my 09 CRV go. I wish I could say it was bittersweet, but honestly I just the dealership with nothing but gratitude for all the great memories it gave me along with all of the safe travels-never being stranded.

Towards the end, the problems we beginning to stack up and it was becoming more of an inconvenience for the repairs and the money that was coming out daily to maintain it.

I picked up a ‘16 VW Jetta with 56,000 miles. I loved my CRV so much, I wouldn’t be surprised if I find myself in another CRV once we have children… but for now, CRV fam it was real!!! ✌🏾

Question ❔ New owners of a Certified preowned CRV!

We are new (to us) owners to a 2025 cr-v touring hybrid. We loooove our new crv! We had great service at the dealership...until about 2 weeks after...we LOST the key fob!! It detached from the metal key, and fell off the face of the earth. We live in a town house with underground parking. I parked it downstairs, walked up to my town house, then the next morning, my partner was to use the CRV only to find we had JUST the metal key on the key ring! How bizzare! Why is the key fob designed this way?? We had to tow the car to the dealership (thankfully roadside assistance covered this) and i spent $480 for an additional key.

Should I further complain??? We were only given 1 key at time of sale. Im assuming the previous owner lost the 2nd key. And basically the dealership was like 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wwyd???

Issue ⚠️ KEY FOB JUNK??

so i changed out the battery in my 2023 crv key fob. The key fob goes back together fine. However when i pet the key in the slot and push down it doesnt lock in. You can hear it click but the slightest pull on it wothout hitting the release button it comes right out

When i take the key fob apart again. Put the key in and than put the 2 sided together the key is completely locked in. However when i hit the button to unlock the key. The key comes out. When i put the key back it wont lock in like before

This is the most frustrating thing ever. Anyone ever fun into this issue ???
