2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

Mods/Addons 🔦 Trying to give my 2026 CR-V some old school Honda character

Just picked up my 2026 Honda CR-V Sport Touring, my first real adult car purchase! I'm looking to give it a retro Honda adventure look.

1st photo is how it looks now, 2nd is an AI generated concept of what I'm going for, and 3rd is just one of the many inspirations I've come across online.

I wasn't originally planning on doing the graphics first, but I'm seriously considering it. Would love some honest feedback. Too much, or does it work?

Review 📝 Worried about havinh purchased a 2025 Honda CRV sport L.

Hey! I recently purchased a 2025 Honda Cr-v sport L. I traded in a 2024 honda civic sport with 19000 miles but a stolen report. I paid $34,500 for the 2025. Essentially im financing $19,100 after taxes and fees with a wheel protection ($1000) thats optional. The 2025 came with a minor cosmetic accident that shows up on the carfax that I was not entirely made aware of. How did I do? Will the accident hurt the trade in down the road?

Question ❔ Hello! I have a 2019 Honda CRV EX AWD with 74k miles on it. I refilled my windshield washer fluid when I noticed this sound. Don't know much about car engines so I'm not sure if this is normal for an engine that is 7 years old. I performed an oil change and replaced the transmission fluid about 2 we

Question ❔ Is it normal for horn to need a firm press compared to other cars?

I recently got a 2026 Honda CR-V and the horn seems to require a more firm press than other cars I have owned. Coming from a Rav-4 where I could just honk it with a light tap of my thumb or palm, this seems way different. Even if I use the hand/palm it requires little extra pressure than what I would have required in my previous car. Is that normal?

Question ❔ Buying a 1999 CRV with a broken timing belt for 900.

Hello! I recently saw a 1999 CRV in my area that’s AWD and it’s pretty good condition but the timing belt went out. Has anyone had any experience with repairing this year and how much potential damage could there be to the engine because of this?

Thanks!

Question ❔ 17.4mpg city?!

Post image
14 Upvotes

My poor 2005 CR-V LX died so I bought a used 2010 CR-V EX in August and it has been getting....17.2-17.6 mpg.

The tires are old and at least one has a slow leak that I have to refill weekly. I only use it 3x a week to commute 5 miles down city streets with a 25/30mph limit, which includes a whopping 25 stops (mostly signs, not lights).

Does this sound like a problem, maybe tire related? Or just bc of my shitty commute route? Front suspension was completely redone by dealership before purchase so it shouldn't be that at least. 😞

Ty!

Question ❔ My 1997 CR-V needs a purge valve..

So far as I can tell no one makes a purge valve for my 97, ChatGPT seems convinced I can just use another purge valve from a different Honda and splice another connector end on it. Is there any truth to that? Or am I just better off finding a used OEM part. If anyone has retrofitted a part can you point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Question ❔ 2009 Oil leaks

At 145K it is dripping about 1-4 drops of oil on the floor per day. I replaced the main seal and it did not help much. Is it normal and should I just ignore it until it gets worse? Dealer and my local indy shop wants several thousand to do all seals. 🫪

Question ❔ Need Help Changing Window Trim on a 2018 CR-V

I’m trying to replace the bottom exterior window trim on my 2018 CR-V, but I’m unsure if the videos I’m looking up are reliable or not. I’m not mechanically inclined at all, and need the assistance. I asked the dealership about it, and they wanted around $800 for it, and I’m not doing that so I’m going DIY on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question ❔ Drivers floor mat keeps bunching up near the gas pedal in my 2013 crv

My drivers side factory carpet mat is driving me crazy. The little plastic floor clips broke a while ago and now the mat slides forward every time i get in. It bunches up under the gas pedal which feels sketchy when im trying to accelerate on the highway.

I pull it back whenever i park but it slides forward again within a few minutes. I want to replace the mats before winter but i dont know what will keep a new one anchored if the floor clips are completely gone. Do the heavy rubber mats with pointy nibs underneath stay put on carpet ?? I just want it to stay where it belongs so im atleat not kicking it back while driving haha.

Question ❔ 2027 Sport-L Pricing (Mid-Atlantic)

Hi all!

Has anybody purchased a 27 Sport-L (or other hybrid trim) in the Mid-Atlantic region recently? So far my best number is:

$42,175 MSRP (Silver, AWD)

-$2,000 dealer discount

+$490 doc fee

+$2,410 tax (PA)

-$500 returning customer incentive

otd: $42,575

Anybody in the area (PA, NY, NJ, MD, DE) seeing numbers for more like 10% off? I've seen a few posts here relatively recently at 10% off, and Tomi from Delivrd says that's a reasonable number. I'm just having my doubts.

Thanks!

Question ❔ Honda Dealership offered to add Anti-Theft Locate Tracking for free on my 26 CRV. Any concerns?

I already have the TAG anti theft security installed but I received a call today from my dealership offering to add the Honda Locate Anti Theft free of charge. Any concerns if I take them up on the offer? They’ve confirmed that there will be no additional cost to me

Question ❔ Clunking noise?

Hi! My car is currently at Honda (2026 Hybrid CRV) but they can’t seem to find anything wrong with it. For the last few days I have had this “knock” or “clunk” when I put push my foot on the brake petal. It doesn’t make the noise all the time and only does it at low speeds, mostly stop and go traffic. I’m attaching a video. I just want opinions, I’m not worried for my safety, I trust they went over it correctly but its more of an annoyance.

Question ❔ 2016 Touring Sound System

Hi! I have a 2016 CRV Touring that I got in March with 135k miles for $12,500 with the navigation system and everything. I'd like to add subs and maybe upgrade the front speakers and tweeters. Just curious whether anyone else has done this and to anyone with sound system experience, will my upgrades be enough to satisfy me as a good quality daily sound system?

Issue ⚠️ PGM-FI

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. The PGM-FI light has come on on my 2009 CRV after it was at the workshop for troubleshooting of an issue with the AC compressor. Could it just be unlucky timing and unrelated? They had the motor cover and serpentine belt off. Is it possible it's simple like something needs to be plugged in again or should I return to the workshop?

I've read the owners manual and it recommends careful driving til it can be checked.

Issue ⚠️ Noises after timing service

Hey guys, first of all appreciate you for taking a look at my post. I’m a young tech who’s been running a mobile mechanic business for the past year, year and a half and I am looking for insight on a situation I’m in.

I got a inquiry about a 2011 Honda CRV with a typical rattle from the CVT actuator, I did not diagnose the car. The customer had it at a dealer for a oil change, and that was their diagnosis and then she called me about getting the timing chain, guides, cvt acuator, and tensioner replaced, along with spark plugs and a rear differential drain and fill. I’ve done these Honda timing jobs in the past so was reluctant on accepting the job Honda I found out. The components I went with was a meling timing kit that included both guides and the upper guide, the tensioner and the chain itself, as far as the CVT acuator, I went with a Dorman unit, everything went well torque everything to spec with my snap on tech angle torque wrench verified timing started the car up ran great. Took it on a 30 minute test drive including highway miles no DTC’s and everything went well. I woke up this morning with a text saying there’s a slight click noise when she steps on the gas. I would like to note that I did not change the oil during the service which I regret in the reason behind that was she said she just had it changed. I found out after the job just changed Was back in May car still driving fine, I offered to change the oil free of charge, and look into the noise I’m fairly confident I didn’t do anything incorrectly, but if it came down to it, I would redo the service if there was evidence that part was faulty, has anyone else experienced a similar noise? It’s very quiet could it be motor mounts, etc. low-key stressing me out as a business owner. I would hate to replace the motor if per se a month from now something with the chain went wrong again thanks for reading. Any insight is helpful. As of now my plan of action is to hope. The oil was really dirty and change it and go on a test drive with a customer. I also will get her to accelerate while the car was in park to try and nail down if it is timing related

Review 📝 CRV is basically done 😩

I have a 2017 CR-V. Bought it brand new and have about 140,000 miles on it. I have done all the maintenance regularly, changed tires once and have replaced the battery a couple of times.
It started making rattle sounds recently so took it to Honda. They found internal metal debris and recommended engine replacement. I’m just so disappointed because I wanted to drive this car for another 150,000 miles. But I guess we are done already! I’ll probably look to sell and see what I can get.
I’m open to any suggestions or even condolences!

I asked AI to take a photo of my new car and off road it a little and I’m honestly loving it. Some Falken tires a roof rock some decals, why do I like this?

Have you guys added any of the all terrain or slightly off road tires? Care to share any pics?

I see the old models on the crv sub being decked out with new life and new looks I wonder what this could look like! I love long roadtrips and camping so this is definitely an idea!
