I am sure this will be downvoted, but I did not enjoy Control Resonant anywhere near as much as the original.
First and biggest issue with the game is combat. The combat in the game feels like someone designed all the tools for a great system and gave it to someone else who had no idea what to do with them. All these different primary and secondary weapons and finishers and all you are going to do in combat is press 1 button. It's not until half way through the game that your secondary weapon gets upgrades to become somewhat useful. Where are the action combat staples? Where are combos or weapon swaps? Wouldn't it be cool if I could use different combination of primary and secondary attacks to trigger different finishers on demand? So much potential completely wasted.
Your abilities are much more interesting, but even at the end of the game, with a build focused on maximizing the use of abilities, they still pale in comparison to Launch from Control. And worst of all, unless you are setting mold on fire, simply continuing your 1 button attack will result in more damage. There is a reason the game gives you so many pet options. You can spawn an army and let them create opportunities for you while you do your 1 thing.
The enemies aren't better. In Control staying still meant death. In Resonant, you are free to pummel heavies one at a time and you don't even need to dodge much to just keep going. If you decide to use the "I win" button that is one of the ways to knock an enemy airborne, you don't need to dodge either. The game gets a bit more challenging toward the end, but at no point did I feel like the enemies were even trying to kill me.
The bizarre skill tree not only leaks all of the abilities that you will get from the word go, but also dedicates a full 1/3 towards an ability you get literally right before the final boss. Heck, you could finish the game without unlocking it at all. And it's not like Command is all the powerful. Your enemies as allies aren't any more dangerous than as enemies, but hey more members to my army I guess?
And than there is Dylan that I know a lot of people like, but I just don't get it. He was kidnapped as a child, basically tortured for years and now his outlook on life is to apologies to everyone and everything for existing. He actually wants to help FBC to prove his worth rather than setting them on fire and laughing. I get needing to set aside your differences in the face of Hiss, Mold and Resonance, but why would he care what FBC thinks of him, why would he keep apologizing? It is the FBC that should be apologizing to him.
And why does the FBC hate him so much. They kidnapped and tortured him and now they are upset that he killed 536 of them while being controlled by Hiss. Incidentally, Dylan isn't responsible for the Hiss, he was just as much a victim. But regardless, now Dylan must apologize for the harm FBC inflicted on itself. WTF?
The level design isn't bad, but just like combat there is a lot of room for improvement. Where are the crazy looping Escheresque constructs? They keep saying how crazy and unpredictable things are but in reality the world is fairly simple to navigate. The Underpass is the only really interesting zone, and sadly it is the smallest of all.
Finally, Remedy, please finish the story. I don't want to wait 7 years for the next installment and hope that finally, the world will be fixed.
